This week on Flightless Bird, David Farrier dives headfirst into one of America's favorite foods, the humble hot dog. He learns that Americans eat around 20 billion hot dogs a year, which means the average American eats about 70 hot dogs per year. Why? How did this simple food get so popular here? To understand, Farrier decides to talk to the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council. Eric Mittenthal picks up and answers some of Farrier's burning questions. David then takes foodie and Flightless Bird producer Rob Holysz out to eat some hot dogs - first at the iconic LA joint Pinks, and then to the very niche Wurstküche in the Arts District. There David and Rob dine on rabbit, buffalo, and rattlesnake. They also set out to answer the burning question: “Is a hotdog a sandwich?” Learn more about your ad choices. OF COURSE, the hot dog!Sam tells a story that links him & the council from when he taught in a school years ago. SMALL WORLD!Does ketchup belong on a hot dog? Is a hot dog a sandwich? What about BBQ sauce? Is shredded cheese better than liquid cheese? Is it ever OK to eat a chili dog with a fork? There are TONS of questions, and Eric talks about all of the crazy ones that have been posed to him in his years as the Top Dog. Sam actually gets one in that Eric says has never been asked of him! We THINK it's a "good question," since that was Eric's response! Eric talks about the work the council does to promote awareness of certain things in the hot dog and sausage world, and Barry brings up a common myth about hot dogs. The conversation was great, and we feel we now have a Lounge Hot Dog Expert, in Eric!To find out what the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council is up to go to www.hot-dog.org!We are proud members of OddPods MediaPromos: Infectious Groove Podcast & Beer'd Al PodcastFind us on Twitter (@500_section), Facebook (500 Section Lounge), and www.oddpodsmedia.com along with all of the other #OddPodsMedia #Family of shows!

There's been plenty of fake outrage and whining from leftists in sports media concerning the Royals ten players that haven't taken a jab and now the Star wants the Royals to trade Whit Merrifield.  But they won't critically attack him and call him stupid, uninformed, dangerous and awful.  No, the latest piece on him is the writer likes him, always has and believes everything he says.  Hammer him or shut up.  You've lost the argument.    Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh is pretty much nobody's favorite but it's largely because he always says and does what he wants.  Now his speaking to pro life groups and getting hammered for it.  At the same time, AOC is doing Instagram publicity stunts faking like she's wearing handcuffs and being praised.  Wow, are we lost.    32 year old Daniel Vasquez was killed on the job in NKC Tuesday after he stopped a car over an expired tags issue.  This story is just tragic and a reminder why we should never tolerate or promote anti police uprisings around the country.    And it's National Hot Dog day and I like mine with chili and cheese.  We ask you where the best dogs are in KC.

Good Morning Everyone and welcome to another episode of All Things Writing. Labor Day 2021 was amazing fun for me. I am the father of an autistic adult child. He is currently down in Fishersville, Virginia attending a special tech school just for people with his kinds of needs.I love Labor day for a couple of reasons. The first is that I really feel that at the end of summer we need a day to just sort of celebrate all things summer and enjoy hanging out with our family and friends. It is a time to unwind. However, that is not what the day started out to be.You see, Labor Day got its start in September of 1882. The unions in New York City decided to have a parade to celebrate their members being in unions and to show support for all unions. According to some sources, at least 20,000 people showed up at the event.Other areas of the country followed in the footsteps of New York and soon gatherings sprung up and in in 1887 Oregon, Massachusetts, Colorado, New York, and New Jersey all made Labor day a state holiday. Grover Cleveland, in 1894, signed a law making Labor Day a national holiday. This was only after most states had already passed their own laws establishing a Labor Day holiday.Labor Day is the unofficial end of hot dog season. Although I argue hot dogs are pretty much an all year thing. I am apparently not in the minority on this one as according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Americans eat around 20 billion hot dogs annually. Why do I tell you any of this? This labor day my wife and I stopped in a wonderful little bed and breakfast called The Buckhorn Inn and Tavern. It is located in Churchville, Va. It is an amazing place. First off you should know it was built in 1811. While it was destroyed in a fire, but was rebuilt exactly as it was. The first floor houses this amazing little dining area, a check in area, and a few rooms. The Innkeeper is named Rob. Super amazing host. He ran his hind end off to make sure our stay was as amazing as possible. The room we stayed in was in the second floor. Super comfy beds and really just a nice layout. The Buckhorn was once host to Confederate Army Commander Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson. As I stood on the balcony overlooking the street, I considered what it might have felt like in those times to look down at the carriage receiving area in front of the building. The Buckhorn was a carriage stop along the road and likely played host to any number of famers persons throughout history who thought it only a minor occurrence to stop at a house along the route of a carriage.I tried to put myself in the shoes of those people exiting their carriage ride, dusty and maybe a little sore from the trip, and being welcomed to the home. What was it like to see a home like that for the first time as a child of these families who looked upon the place with wonder? What does this have to do with Writing?  Passion! Restoring a home takes passion, getting a new holiday on the books requires passion. So does writing.Want to know more about the Buckhorn Inn? July, the month that features National Hot Dog Month and Day, is the perfect time to catch up with some familiar voices in the beef and frank industry. This week's MEAT+POULTRYPodcast hosted Eric Mittenthal, president of the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council and the vice president of sustainability at the North American Meat Institute (NAMI). The conversation starts with Mittenthal discussing how the organization plans to celebrate hot dog season at the time when it usually hosts the Annual Hot Dog Lunch in Washington, DC. Mittenthal also shares stories from NAMI's hot dog ambassadorship program and how the organization is promoting meat throughout the summer, including utilizing more social media posts, including on Tik Tok, to share their messages with a younger audience. Later, he discusses how hot dogs and other meats have retained their spots as comfort foods over the last year. Finally, Mittenthal mentions NAMI's new sustainability framework for continuous improvement in the industry. I could be dreaming, this could be a simulation, or perhaps I'm the only person not in on the joke. Whatever the case may be, I'm going to describe what I perceived to happen on the show this afternoon. The country seems to be going through different seasons with their "billionaires are evil" phase. We're now on to the "these are the things he could do with his money instead of flying rockets" season. It's hard to comprehend some of the stuff they claim Bezos could pay for. I want to know how much it would cost to buy a country. I'm not talking about corrupting a president or prime minister with cash. I'm talking about buying the country, changing the flag, writing my own constitution, and calling it Bezosland. It sounds like he has the money to make that happen so why hasn't he? BTW, buying a little island doesn't count. *It's National Hot Dog day. If you're like me, it's been a long time since you've gone 24 hours without eating at least one gas-station hot dog and an even longer since you can remember enjoying one. So let's try to remember that we don't have to feel sad for ourselves when we stop by the gas station tonight for dinner. I'm thinking about driving a couple minutes out of my way and going to a different gas station where they don't recognize me. *Doomscrolling! People are getting way too used to these  apocalyptic headlines. People getting swept away by floods in China, mosquito tornadoes in Russia, fire tornadoes in the ocean, Portland hitting 112 degrees, and armadillos suddenly living in my neighborhood but most people seem unphased. Perhaps this Taco Bell food shortage will get a few people's attention. *Women get turned on by some really random stuff. Wish I'd known about these things sooner. *Women have questions for men and Lazlo is here to answer them all. (I promise it floats) *The dictionary just added a bunch of new words and Lazlo's favorite made the list. *The pettiest reasons people have ended a relationship. I thought this discussion was funny. One guy said he went to her house and she had a Live Laugh Love sign on the wall.  *You are my favorite person and I want nothing but good things for you. Have a great day and we'll touch base tomorrow!  -Everybody Wang Chung!! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Does your cat bring you dead mice it kills or various rodent body parts? I’ll explain the current theory for why cats do this and the best way to react. It’s probably not what you think. Then, if you are like many other dog owners, you don’t like to think that your dog could ever bite someone. The reality is that any dog – no matter the breed, can bite and injure someone. My guest, Melissa Berryman, is a dog bite prevention expert, creator of the People Training for Good Dogs dog handling program, and author of the book by the same title. In today’s episode, she talks about how we can take more responsibility for preventing dog bite injuries by better understanding our dog’s point of view and needs and expectations of us, and shares some of the innocent human actions that cause some of the most common bites. Plus, in the special feature, “Where Did That Expression Come From?” we’ll take on the phrase, “barking up the wrong tree” and then how one of America’s most popular foods, a sandwich eaten by the billions each year, got its name. Congratulations to Ann from Woodburn, Oregon for winning a free large bag of NutriSource dog food. She did so, by being randomly selected from those that sent in a question about their pets that they wanted covered in the podcast. Her question, that we answered, was about why cats leave “gifts” of dead mice for her family.  You can be selected as well and receive a free bag of pet food. Write me at susan@raisingyourpaws.com. On this special 4th of July No BS Marketing podcast, let's talk ketchup, mustard, and marketing.Americans will eat more than 7 billion hot dogs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, 150 million on the 4th of July holiday alone. We average about 70 hot dogs per person eaten each year. If you have one, do you top it with ketchup or mustard?According to a YouGov survey, the most popular condiment for hot dogs is mustard (72%) followed by ketchup (59%), onions (51%) and relish (47%).Age has a big impact on our choice. 73% of 16-34-year-olds ate their hot dogs with ketchup while only 41% of those 35 and older did.Makes sense. Kids love ketchup. Children have different taste buds than adults and notice bitter tasting foods more. Plus creative commercials help create long-lasting habits like adding ketchup to a hot dog. Remember the Anticipation theme from these two classics? But sometimes one organization's message hurts a complimentary product. The National Hot Dog & Sausage Council's Do's and Don'ts of Hot Dog Etiquette surely caught the attention of ketchup companies with this one: Heinz Anticipation Commercial 1979.Don't…Use ketchup on your hot dog after the age of 18.Mustard, relish, onions, cheese, and chili are acceptable.Whether you like your hot dog with ketchup, mustard or some other way, you can benefit from these Messaging Do's and Don'ts:Do…Focus on creative promotions to tell your story. Just like the hot dog industry promotes National Hot Dog Month, you can promote your anniversary, new equipment, locations and hires in a creative way.Do…Make it about your target audiences. Why does it matter to them?Don't…Miss opportunities to promote your uniqueness. Develop a content calendar to tell your story throughout the year.Don't…Make messaging, branding and PR decisions by committee. You'll end up with a little bit of what each person wanted and a lot of wasted advertising dollars.Don't…think your instincts are better than a combination of listening to customers through Marketing Intel, brainstorming with your leadership team AND your instincts. So many times I see companies suffer because decisions made about marketing or messaging are made based on instincts…thinking “I know my market, I know my customers, I've done this for X number of years.”If you're still not sure about ketchup on your hot dog, in honor of my Dad on this 4th of July podcast, I'm going to quote one of his favorite movie characters. Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry makes it clear in the film Sudden Impact when he finished a rant about society's ills by telling a hot dog eating detective at the scene that "Nah, this stuff isn't getting to me, the shootings, the knifings, the beatings, old ladies being bashed in the head for their social security checks... Nah, that doesn't bother me. But you know what does bother me? You know what makes me really sick to my stomach? It's watching you stuff your face with those hotdogs. Nobody, I mean nobody puts ketchup on a hot dog.Hey Dirty Harry, I do from time to time…guess I'm a BS'er when it comes to eating hot dogs.Hope you enjoy your 4th of July Holiday week.

The Pet Doctor - Keeping your pets healthy & pet wellness - Pets & Animals on Pet Life Radio (PetLifeRadio.com)

It is estimated that Americans bite dogs at the rate of over 7 billion times between Memorial day and Labor Day with the highest concentration being in the month of July. Those statistics may seem alarming and have been compiled by a very reputable organization, the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council. Every year, Americans eat an average of 60 hot dogs each and not all of those are eaten at your local Costco. Though dogs have been deemed to be one of our dearest companions, it has been estimated that dogs will bite man, and woman and too often children 4.5 million times a year. Are they all bad dogs? Were they are mistreated as pup? What do we do to aggravate the situation? My guest is Dr. Jose Arce. He is a delegate to the American Veterinary Medical Association's House of Delegates representing Puerto Rico where he co-owns Miramar Animal Hospital. Questions or comments?
