What drives someone to consume 76 hot dogs in 10 minutes or choke down eight pounds of pure mayonnaise? The fascinating and sometimes disturbing world of competitive eating exists at the intersection of sport, spectacle, and sheer human determination. We dive deep into this peculiar subculture that's evolved dramatically over the years. From the famous Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest to obscure challenges involving beef tongue and jalapeno peppers, these competitions push human bodies to their absolute limits. Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi emerge as the titans of the industry, with Chestnut holding an astonishing number of world records across various food categories. The science behind competitive eating proves surprisingly complex. We explore how these gastronomic athletes train their bodies through stomach stretching techniques, drinking gallons of water before events, and even learning to partially dislocate their jaws. These aren't just people with big appetites—they're dedicated competitors who approach eating with strategic precision. What began as casual county fair entertainment has transformed into a global phenomenon with significant cash prizes. The Wing Bowl offers $50,000 to its champion, while most competitions range between $2,500 and $10,000 for first place. For those at the top of the field, competitive eating can become a legitimate career path, though one that raises serious questions about long-term health consequences. As we debate which food challenges we might personally attempt—from White Castle sliders to deviled eggs—we're left wondering: is competitive eating an impressive display of human potential, or simply a grotesque spectacle? Whatever your take, one thing's certain—it's impossible to look away.Join us for this eye-opening exploration of what happens when eating becomes sport, and discover why these food warriors continue to push the boundaries of what we thought humanly possible.Thank you for giving us a go, and hope you stick with us as we have some really amazing guest on and hole you have a laugh or two but no more than three. It's just Gemini and Rich this week, as Al got sick, got better, then lost his voice just in time for the show. But he did have a nice conversation with Sylvia Welsh of The Composer's Room on E. Sahara. That includes a detailed explantion of just what The Composer's room is. Also: the man synonamous with competitive eating, Joey Chestnut, came to Las Vegas and won another crown: his second victory in the Bagelmania bagel eating competition. Gemini got a few comments from him, and runner-up Paterick Bertoletti. There are also lots of dining out downloads, including a dinner that Rich and Gem had together. And we light a very small candle to mark the Las Vegas demise of TGI Fridays.

Competitive eating, or speed eating, is a sport in which participants compete against each other to eat large quantities of food, usually in a short time period. Contests are typically eight to ten minutes long, although some competitions can last up to thirty minutes, with the person consuming the most food being declared the winner. Competitive eating is most popular in the United States, Canada, and Japan, where organized professional eating contests often offer prizes, including cash.

Click here to get a 25% discount on the Dwell Bible App. During today's conversation on Back Porch Theology we're having the biblical equivalent of Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest that takes place on Coney Island every July Fourth. Because while we won't be trying to gobble 62 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes like world champion Joey Chestnut did last summer, we are going to attempt to digest some of the major doctrinal themes found in the book of Romans in one single podcast! Speaking of Christian doctrine, Martin Luther - widely known as one of the key leaders of the Protestant Reformation in the 1500s – was a dutiful priest who almost drove himself crazy trying to live a life holy enough to please God. He spent hours in prayer every day, he fasted for so long and so often that it caused severe intestinal problems, and he even practiced self-harm, thinking that the discomfort and pain that resulted from intentionally wounding himself was a necessary penance for his sin. It wasn't until he taught on the book of Romans that the Holy Spirit opened his eyes to divine grace – to the unmerited favor of Jesus Christ – and that's what dramatically changed his personal life and gave rise to the Protestant church. Luther described Romans as, “The gate to paradise” because it's what led him from practicing rote religion to experiencing a real relationship with our Creator Redeemer. We hope today's conversation opens the gate for some of you to walk into a much closer relationship with Jesus, too. So please grab your favorite beverage a snack and a Bible – if you have one – and come prop your feet up on the porch with us.

Summer vacation might officially be over for Nikki & Brie. After a wild summer in the mountains, Brie's ready for the routine of the school year. Nikki has something to say about an Instagram comment that was critical of her openness about going to therapy and the effort she's making to make all of her relationships better and evaluate communication in her marriage. Both Nikki & Brie have noticed some significant changes in how they eat and drink lately. Nikki has come to the realization that three drinks is too many and two is the magic number. Brie's noticed that she's not able to handle certain foods the same way. One thing that Nikki and Brie both have no problems with is black licorice. It could be a problem. Brie's in full Halloween mode, but Nikki thinks she could be getting ahead of herself. It's not even Labor Day and Pumpkin Spice Latte's on the menu. All of this Halloween talk reminds Nikki about something that Brie did to her house that left a lasting mark and a tiny bit of pumpkin rage. While it could be too early for PSL's, Brie already has her family Halloween costume set, while Nikki is weighing her options, but there's a clear front runner. Then, to get ready for the new school year, Nikki & Brie have to get on the same page with Editor in Beef. The Garcia Twins are editors of the school yearbook, and they have to assign superlatives to Artem, Matteo Bryan, Birdie, Buddy, and themselves. Nikki also gives some background on what she's doing in Las Vegas on Labor Day. Nikki will be hosting the Netflix special. Joey Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef will stream on Netflix on September 2! Competitive eating is a sport. That's the belief of Joey Chestnut, the greatest eater of all time — and man, do we agree with the 16-time Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest champion now. Ahead of his Labor Day duel against rival Takeru Kobayashi, Joey reveals everything we ever wanted to know about jaw exercises, coffee enemas, and what he refuses to eat.
