The Pirates' 2025 season officially closed with a 4–1 loss to the Atlanta Braves, finishing the year at 71–91. In this final NS9 Postgame Show powered by Primanti Bros, Anthony DiNardo and Jim Rosati break down the game and reflect on a long, frustrating season. They highlight Johan Oviedo's outing—five innings, three hits, three walks, three strikeouts, and two earned runs, including a first-inning homer to Ronald Acuña Jr. Despite early command issues, Oviedo settled in and capped a solid late-season stretch with a 3.57 ERA over nine starts. The guys discuss his improved fastball metrics, steady arsenal, and why he's earned a rotation spot heading into 2026. Offensively, the Pirates again struggled. Even with early chances against retiring Braves starter Charlie Morton and a lone run from back-to-back doubles by Bryan Reynolds and Joey Bart, the bats couldn't deliver. Anthony and Jim also reminisce about Morton's career, his impact on Pittsburgh's playoff teams, and his memorable final matchup with Andrew McCutchen. It's a fitting microcosm of the year: solid starting pitching, quiet offense. Watch as the crew recaps the finale and shares hopes for needed offseason changes and a brighter 2026.
Off The Bench is back weekdays from 10a to 11a followed by The Stone Shields Show from 11a to noon! Under the glaring lights of Great American Ball Park, the Cincinnati Reds' playoff dreams flickered and faded in the cruel twilight of extra innings. On September 24, 2025, a fired-up crowd of 30,725 watched in stunned silence as the Pittsburgh Pirates snatched a 4-3 victory in the 11th, delivering a dagger to Cincinnati's NL wild-card hopes. Tied with Arizona and just one game behind the Mets entering the night, the Reds now stare at a precarious half-game deficit with only five contests left—a loss that feels like the backbreaker in a season of tantalizing what-ifs. The evening began as a pitcher's duel for the ages, pitting Reds ace Hunter Greene against Pirates phenom Paul Skenes, the NL Cy Young frontrunner. Greene, battling for his 8th win, scattered five hits over six innings, allowing two earned runs while fanning seven. But Skenes was untouchable, surrendering just four hits in six scoreless frames, whiffing seven and etching his name in franchise lore with his 211th strikeout—a Pirates record for a righty. Pittsburgh scratched out a 2-0 lead in the second on Bryan Reynolds' RBI single and Oneil Cruz's sacrifice fly, quieting the home faithful. Hope ignited in the eighth. Down 2-0, Noelvi Marte unleashed chaos with his first career inside-the-park homer, a liner off the wall that caromed wildly into left-center, allowing him to circle the bases untouched. The GABP erupted. Then, in the ninth, Tyler Stephenson crushed a solo shot off closer Dennis Santana, knotting it at 2-2 and forcing extras. "Stephenson's blast was pure adrenaline," Reds manager Terry Francona said postgame. "We had momentum." But baseball's heartless script twisted in the 10th. Jack Suwinski's RBI double plated the go-ahead run for a 3-2 Pirates edge. The Reds clawed back on Gavin Lux's sacrifice fly, tying it once more at 3-3. Agony peaked in the 11th: Spencer Horwitz's leadoff double scored Reynolds—his third run of the night—for a 4-3 lead. Cincinnati loaded the bases with two outs, hearts pounding, only for Marte to ground into a momentum-crushing force out against Yohan Ramirez. Final out. Ballgame over. Ryan and DiNardo talk about their performances while also the lack of offense, even though the two solo shots by Nick Yorke and Bryan Reynolds were enough to get the victory tonight. In his weekly Pirates mailbag podcast, Post-Gazette insider Noah Hiles answers reader questions. Among them: Should they commence a search for a new hitting coach this offseason after a lackluster first year from Matt Hague? What are the chances either Mitch Keller or Bryan Reynolds — or both — is traded this offseason? Now that top prospect Bubba Chandler is in the major league rotation, will he be there out of next season's spring training, too? Which player should fans be most excited for in 2026? And what current minor leaguers could actually help Don Kelly's club win next season? Noah answers those questions and more. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The NS9 Postgame Show Powered by Primanti Bros breaks down the Pirates' 4–3 loss to the Nationals—a game that started with a three-run first and then a long, quiet stretch from the offense. We dig into Oneil Cruz's focus and base running lapse (despite some good swings), Bryan Reynolds' effort on a key ball in play, and why accountability and fundamentals remain glaring issues under Don Kelly vs. the Derek Shelton era. On the bright side, Mike Burrows' changeup and early dominance were encouraging, Justin Lawrence looked solid in his first action since an early-season injury, and the bullpen/rotation picture shows signs of promise—even as the Pirates drop the series and fall 20 games under .500. Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey joins host Adam Bittner to react to the hot topics in Pittsburgh sports this week. Should Steelers GM Omar Khan and coach Mike Tomlin make an exception to their rule of not negotiating contracts with players during training camp and into the season when it comes to T.J. Watt? Or should they stick to their guns as he reportedly seeks a contract that would take him to his age 36 season? Is there still time to trade him? And would that defeat the purpose of signing veterans like Aaron Rodgers and trading for names like DK Metcalf, Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith? And are there any lessons we can learn from the Le'Veon Bell contract holdout close to a decade ago? Our duo tackles those questions, then talks some hockey. What should we make of Penguins GM Kyle Dubas' moves so far this NHL offseason? Does the deal for goalie Arturs Silovs signal big moves coming with Tristan Jarry and/or Erik Karlsson? Should the team tank for a chance to draft Gavin McKenna? Or give Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang a chance for one more Stanley Cup run together? And what should we make of reports that Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle are looking to re-assume ownership of the club? Our duo tackles those questions and more. Then in the third segment, airing on the PG's Pirates YouTube channel, the guys tackle the hot topics surrounding the club this week. Should GM Ben Cherington be allowed to trade big names like Mitch Keller, Bryan Reynolds and Ke'Bryan Hayes while his future is in question? Or should Bob Nutting limit his options for deals to players on expiring contracts like Tommy Pham, Andrew Heaney and Isiah Kiner-Falefa? What should we make of Reynolds' continued struggles? Was Seth Hernandez a good top pick in the MLB draft? Where does Oneil Cruz go from here after his MLB Home Run Derby performance? And how seriously should we take Konnor Griffin as a prospect?

Pirates broadcaster Greg Brown joined the show. The guys talked about a Pirates win in Milwaukee, which was helped by a 5-for-5 night from Nick Gonzales. Greg said teams like the Pirates can't afford to lose players like Gonzales because they don't have the luxury some others have. Greg thinks Spencer Horwitz is another guy that ‘can just plain hit' in this lineup. Brownie said Oneil Cruz and Bryan Reynolds are the guys that need to carry this team in home runs. The guys talked about Cruz's outfield work and a few of the mishaps we've seen recently. Cruz has also gone into a terrible slump at the plate – why? Isaac Mattson has become one of the Pirates best stories, showcasing another local product. Greg credited Don Kelly for how some of the players have responded. Greg said it's hard not to root for the players. Greg hinted that Ben Cherington has something brewing about a month out of the trade deadline. Post-Gazette Pirates insider Colin Beazley discusses Pirates outfielder Tommy Pham, who went 3 for 3 with two doubles on Sunday and spoke postgame about visual issues he's been experiencing this year. Beazley describes what Pham is experiencing it, how he has managed it throughout his 10 year major league career, and what changed this year. Beazley also discusses what it means for Pham and the Pirates moving forward throughout the 2025 season as GM Ben Cherington and manager Don Kelly look to get more out of the lineup generally, with names like Oneil Cruz, Bryan Reynolds, Ke'Bryan Hayes and others looking to get on a roll in support of stellar pitching from starters including Paul Skenes and Mitch Keller.

Pirates broadcaster Greg Brown joined the show. Greg thinks Don Kelly is in this for the long-haul and is not the interim manager of the Pirates. We are starting to see Bryan Reynolds heat up a bit, and he's not the only hitter you can say that about. Kelly is actually 15-11 in complete games managed this season, an even better mark than his 15-14 overall record. Can Paul Skenes win the Cy Young with a losing record or are voters still do dead-set on wins and losses? Brownie said Kelly is not afraid as Pirates manager to take chances and risks during games, unlike what we saw from Derek Shelton most of his tenure. Greg was surprised we didn't see Bubba Chandler during this homestand and isn't sure when he arrives. Brownie questioned how good Chandler will be when he's here.
