It’s not a great marketing slogan for Wrigley Field, but Cubs manager Craig Counsell perfectly summed up the experience of watching this offense fail to deliver in clutch situations: “It makes you sit in discomfort.” With Cubs fans getting restless, The Athletic’s Sahadev Sharma and Patrick Mooney open their notebooks to share information on why Counsell is mostly sticking with his guys, when the rotation should get some reinforcements and how this prolonged slump could impact the front office’s approach to the trade deadline.

TMU Psychology Professor Dr. Alyssa Counsell joins us to unpack what statistics literacy truly involves. She shares research that complicates common assumptions about “stats anxiety,” revealing that students' attitudes are more nuanced than the usual narrative, and strongly shaped by instructor rapport. Alyssa also discusses her work experimenting with interpretation-focused assessments and why managing expectations is essential when trying something new. A practical, timely conversation for anyone teaching with data, or simply trying to make sense of it. Dr. Alyssa Counsell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Toronto Metropolitan University, a Teaching Fellow with TMU's Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, and the Director of the Psychology and Statistics Education Research (PASER) lab. She seeks to bridge the gap between methodological innovation and applied statistical practice. Her research explores the applications of advanced statistical models for complex psychological data, as well as statistics literacy, pedagogy, and education in the social sciences. Dr. Counsell currently holds a SSHRC Insight Grant for her research program, Improving statistics education and statistical literacy in the social sciences. In this special episode, SimpliFlying's CEO Shashank Nigam and Head of Sustainability Dirk Singer sit down with senior leaders from three companies featured in their upcoming book, Sustainability in the Air, Vol. II. Joining the conversation are Jonathon Counsell (Group Head of Sustainability, IAG), Diana Birkett Rakow (SVP of Public Affairs and Sustainability, Alaska Airlines), and Ashwin Jadhav (VP of Business Development, Twelve). Together, they explore how their organisations are addressing aviation's toughest sustainability challenges — and where the industry is headed next. Here are some key highlights from the episode:Why Volume II? Singer explains why the time was right for a second volume of Sustainability in the Air: the landscape has shifted dramatically in just 18 months, with a sharper focus on commercial viability and real-world implementation.Industry maturation: The sustainable aviation sector has evolved to focus on business benefits beyond environmental credentials — being green alone is no longer enough.IAG's SAF usage: Counsell shares how IAG has become an industry frontrunner in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), using 162,000 tons last year — about 1.9% of its total fuel consumption.Long-term partnerships:Jadhav discusses Twelve's landmark 14-year SAF offtake agreement with IAG – an extraordinary commitment in an industry where one-year contracts are the norm.Investing in innovation: Birkett Rakow highlights Alaska Airlines' approach to sustainability through strategic investments in climate tech companies like Twelve, ZeroAvia, and JetZero via Alaska Star Ventures.Corporate partnerships: The discussion explores how Microsoft's partnership with Alaska Airlines and Twelve is helping absorb the green premium — demonstrating the role non-aviation players can play in accelerating industry transformation. The role of policy: All three guests weigh in on the urgent need for government support to help scale sustainable aviation solutions.Sustainability in the Air Vol. II will be available soon, and you can preorder your copy now on Amazon. From Baseball Isn't Boring (subscribe here), many thought that Cubs manager Craig Counsell's $8 million-a-year deal with Chicago was going to make managers' salaries skyrocket. Since then, however, the closest anyone has come is Red Sox manager Alex Cora's deal, which pays him just more than $7 million per season. Other than that, there isn't a manager who makes as much as $5 million annually. With the likes of the Dodgers' Dave Roberts and the Yankees' Aaron Boone heading into the final years of their deals, will there be someone who eclipses Counsell's salary soon or will that agreement remain an outlier? Rob Bradford catches up with longtime baseball writer and author Scott Miller to tackle the topic.
