In this episode, REB editor Liam Garman is joined by Tim McKibbin, CEO of the Real Estate Institute of NSW (REINSW), to explore one of the most pressing issues in the industry – the exceptionally high churn rate among new agents – and the steps needed to create a more sustainable, educated workforce. The conversation kicks off with a sobering statistic: nearly 80 per cent of new real estate professionals exit the industry within their first year. McKibbin unpacks why better foundational training in areas like contract law, property fundamentals, and client advocacy is critical to reversing this trend. They then delve into the soft skills that underpin success in real estate – from building trust to mastering interpersonal communication. The episode concludes with a look at the evolving role of technology and AI. McKibbin shares how REINSW is harnessing AI for data analysis and interpreting legislation and how agents can leverage these tools to work smarter and strengthen client relationships. Maryann is currently Managing Director at Strategic Philanthropy Ltd. and has worked in wealth management and philanthropy for over 25 years, including at the UN World Food Program's Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific and Harris Private Bank. Paul is a Managing Director in Ernst & Young's Americas Family Office Advisory practice, and prior to that was a Managing Partner at Family Office Metrics and the Founder and President of Private Family Networks. Maryann and Paul reflect on the challenge they perceived back in 2000, when they founded Shaking the Tree, with how families and their advisors were approaching and addressing family dynamics issues. They describe how and why they reached the conclusion to apply theater and dramatized productions to family dynamics and share the reasons why this creative approach is often more effective than more traditional ways of engaging family members during difficult or transitional times. Over the years, Shaking the Tree has amassed an impressive online library of videos illustrating different situations and case studies. Maryann and Paul talk about how families and advisors can make use of this resource and apply these case studies in the work they do with their family members. Beyond simply using the existing inventory of online videos, Maryann and Paul also shed light on the other theatrical and creative tools and methods that families and their advisors can deploy to engage and educate family members more effectively, including creating their own original video content to utilize within their family structure and broader family enterprise. Please enjoy this illuminating conversation with two of the most experienced and creative veterans in the space of engaging and educating multigenerational family members.

Sir Charles Lilley (1827–97) was a towering figure in politics and law in colonial Queensland, but his final years were dogged by controversy.  In October 1892, Sir Charles announced his intention to resign as second Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Queensland (1879–93). The catalyst was his behaviour throughout the 57-day civil trial of Queensland Investment and Land Mortgage Co Ltd v Grimley. Leading up to his resignation, Sir Charles increasingly eschewed norms of judicial detachment. Grimley was the final straw.  This lecture examines the Grimley affair and considers the extent to which, along with his behaviour in other proceedings of the time, it brought into question Sir Charles' ethics as a judge. About the speakerDr Sarah McKibbin is a Lecturer in Law at the University of Southern Queensland in Toowoomba, where she teaches, researches and publishes in legal history and private international law. She resided for three decades in the San Francisco Bay Area, balancing a fulfilling career and a fascinating spiritual quest. She consulted with businesses on strategic and organizational renewal, and pursued her own dynamic – and sometimes surprising – inner journey. There is no greater story than that of true love, especially in a time where it feels all but lost. Two decades ago Gates McKibbin was serving as a scribe to her guiding forces when they asked her to pick up a pen and pad of paper and begin writing what she was told. The result is 4 books that share a beautiful story of twin flames from their inception. As they traverse time, they come together now and again with a sense of instant recognition and a love that does not waiver no matter the circumstances. As you journey through this series, you share in this visceral and steadfast love connection that virtually every human is seeking. It reads as a cross between Joan Grant and Anastasia, though Gates knew nothing of these authors, nor the history she reveals - all of which was validated years later. Enjoy and Share as a holiday gift to your friends!

In the days just prior to 9-11, Gates McKibbin was meditating in communion with her deceased father when, suddenly, an entity began urgently seeking her attention. They identified themselves as Thomas Jefferson, third president of the United States. She assumed the role of scribe and simply wrote down what she was told. This was soon followed by a distinctly different personality who identified himself as Abraham Lincoln, followed by Dwight Eisenhower. Why just before 9-11? The world was about to change and Democracy itself would become imperilled, which we have seen so starkly in recent times.   Gates' book, ‘Epic Steps: Rekindling Democracy, Unity and Peace', sat in an archived file in her computer for 18 years, until a year ago, when she felt the urge to assemble and publish this collection of automatic writing from the former presidents. And the timing could not have been more divine! The purity, beauty and stark truth of these words will inspire you to invest yourself in the dream of Democracy from the level of spirit through to state and federal governance.
