The Pirates have scored four or fewer runs 20 games in a row. They're reaching lows dating back to 1908! The Pirates averaged 4.1 runs per game last year, this year they're averaging 3.1. Injuries have hurt the Pirates with Nick Gonzales and Spencer Horwitz missing the early part of the year.
Spencer Horwitz and Nick Gonzales are coming back soon, but can they make a huge difference? A change could happen before the All-Star Break if things continue in this direction. Austin thinks this could derail Bubba Chandler's debut time and push him back later in the year if the team continues losing.
In his weekly Pirates mailbag, insider Noah Hiles answers readers questions while the team plays on the West Coast. Will hot-hitting Enmanuel Valdez have a spot when Spencer Horwitz and Nick Gonzales return from injuries? Will Henry Davis go back to Triple-A when Endy Rodriguez comes back? And was Andrew McCutchen forced on Ben Cherington and Derek Shelton?
The Pirates are 2-5, in last place, and already making moves. On this episode of NS9LIVE, DiNardo, Jim, and Tyler are joined by MLB.com Pirates beat writer Alex Stumpf to talk through David Bednar's demotion, the Alexander Canario trade, and what to expect for the 2025 home opener. They break down Oneil Cruz's ridiculous start, torpedo bats, and another shaky showing from the bullpen. The crew also hits on Thomas Harrington's debut, injury updates for Bryan Reynolds, Jared Jones, and Nick Gonzales, and whether the stolen base issue is real. It's early, but the panic meter is definitely rising in Pittsburgh. Pirates 1B Darick Hall joined the show. Darick is a new Bucco this year, recently with the Phillies, a team that was on the doorstep of a championship the last few seasons. Darick said his junior year of college is when he really started to find his power and get the grip of reality that he could get drafted. Darick talked about the guys he watched growing up and who he tries to model his game after – some big-time boppers of the late 90's and 2000's. Darick said one of those guys was Barry Bonds and he broke down what he loved about his game. Darick talked about the changes in the game and how hitters approach at-bats differently than years ago. He said Juan Soto was deserving of his money and noted how great of a swing he has. The guys asked Darick about how he has changed his strategy at the plate after a down year in 2024. Darick described his favorite moment in the big leagues so far. Darick chatted about watching baseball growing up and his love for the 2004 Red Sox. Darick gave a shout out to MVP Baseball 2005 – the single greatest baseball video game ever made. The guys asked Darick about his offseason and/or relaxation plan. Pirates OF/1B Billy Cook joined the show. Billy said he missed out on the air bnb he had last year in spring training with the Orioles. Billy is living with Nick Yorke during the spring, another young guy that came over at the deadline last year. Billy said he isn't much of a cook and told the story about making chicken pot pie. The guys asked Billy about playing with Paul Skenes and the approach against him in the batter's box. Billy told the guys about a few ‘holy crap' moments he's had in his professional life, but he doesn't have any starstruck moments yet. Who does Billy model his game after? Billy said his favorite player growing up was Dustin Pedroia because he thought he would be shorter due to both of his parents being 5'7. Billy talked about the challenge of breaking through with the Orioles due to their abundance of good, young players in the system. He gave his kneejerk reaction to being traded to the Pirates. Billy feels most comfortable in CF and talked about seeing Oneil Cruz in action. He thinks Cruz could be a great athlete in multiple sports. Pirates 2B Nick Gonzales joined the show. Nick joined during our Mock of the Day segment and reacted to his Cowboys taking Ashton Jeanty in the 1st round. Nick said he went to all but one Cowboys game 2 years ago. Nick said his favorite Cowboy player of all-time is Tony Romo. Nick talked about his high school days and playing multiple sports. Nick said Alex Rodriguez was his favorite baseball player growing up, but also loved Andrew McCutchen when he started to play outfield. Nick talked about his love for cars and his grandpa being a racecar driver back in the day.

North Shore Nine (Pittsburgh Pirates Podcast) #pittsburghpirates #oneilcruz #mlb Today during his pregame presser, Pittsburgh Pirates manager Derek Shelton said they are officially moving Oneil Cruz to centerfield and playing Isiah Kiner-Falefa at short for the remainder of the season. Shelton mentioned Bryan Reynolds and Nick Gonzales as clutch players. Shelton thinks Joey Bart could be here for a while and is earning it, but believes Henry Davis and Endy Rodriguez are big parts of the future and it takes more time for some players to figure it out.

The Pirates score the last four runs to beat the Phillies. Correspondent Josh Rowntree reports.
Nick Gonzales has been what the Pirates hoped he would be when they drafted him 7th overall. Rowdy Tellez always thought there was something he could do or get back to in order to finally get right, but it doesn't seem promising for Ke'Bryan Hayes.

Rowdy Tellez always thought there was something he could do or get back to in order to finally get right, but it doesn't seem promising for Ke'Bryan Hayes. The Pirates lineup is out. What do they realistically need to do in the final four games before the All-Star Break? If they take today's game and sweep the White Sox, they're back at .500. Texts in the city.
Derek Shelton said that Ben Cherington has the freedom to make moves to help the club, even though John Perrotto's article said his hands are tied. More thoughts on Mitch Keller and Nick Gonzales.

Zeise joins host Adam Bittner to ponder pressure facing the Steelers in 2024. Is Arthur Smith's new-look defense the unit under the most? Or will the star-laden defense with T.J. Watt, Patrick Queen, Minkah Fitzpatrick and Cam Heyward face the most scrutiny? Why are names like Russell Wilson, Joey Porter Jr. and Broderick Jones under the most individual pressure? And who needs to perform best if this team is going to take down the big names on its tough schedule, including the Kansas City Chiefs, Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles? Our duo tackles those questions, then gets into the Pirates. Can they contend for the playoffs with their potent rotation of Mitch Keller, Paul Skenes and Jared Jones, especially considering the San Diego Padres currently hold the final berth with a sub-.500 record? Is it time to believe in Nick Gonzales yet? And will Jack Suwinski and Henry Davis really be better after short stints in the minors? The finally, Paul gives his picks for the NBA Finals between the Dallas Mavericks and Boston Celtics, plus the Stanley Cup final between the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers.
On his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey reacts to the Pirates' latest win against the Los Angeles Dodgers, led by a strong start from Paul Skenes. Are he and fellow rookie pitcher Jared Jones bringing a new winning swagger to this team? How legit is the recent tear by Nick Gonzales that has given the offense a boost? And should Edward Olivares see more playing time as he's continued to produce? Jason tackles those topics, then reacts to the Steelers' signing of Cam Sutton and recaps his feature on the Perfect Pitch camp.

His season looks a lot like his breakout season in 2022. He's posting a 3.59 ERA, but not striking out a ton (about seven per nine) with three wins. He's even pitching a sub 4.00 ERA in four starts at home. a.Should I be excited about this or is this a mirage?b.He should get traded at the deadline, but with the Rockies do it?3.Josh Hader has settled down and has pitched much better of late. Should we look at him as a Top 3 closer again?4.I actually liked Nick Gonzales entering this season and he made my target list for Draft and Hold Leagues. I'm sure people thought I was crazy, but he's been ok. He looks like he's turning back into the player that he was in his first two years of college – a contact hitter with doubles power and 10 to 12 home run pop. Your thoughts?5.Is there any reason to expect Eloy Jimenez to play more than 100 games a year? He's done 120 for two seasons, 55 and 84, and is hurt again. Do you just avoid rostering these injured-riddled players?6.Xander Boegarts fractured his shoulder and hits the IL for a while. I'm assuming Arraez moves to second. Who gets his playing time?7.Julio Rodriguez still hits the ball hard (92.6 MPH exit velo) and is still in the 98th percentile in speed, but he's striking out 28% of the time and walking less than 6% of the time – both career worst. His quality of contact (squared-up balls) is in the bottom 20% of the league. How concerned should fantasy managers be?8.One question after today's games…9.What hitter are you targeting this weekend?10.What pitcher are you targeting this weekend?

Jason answers those questions, then talks a little Steelers OTAs. How is George Pickens showing signs of maturity already? On his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey reacts to the Pirates' 5-4 win against the Cubs on Thursday night in Chicago. Was the aggression we saw at the plate from players including Nick Gonzales and Edward Olivares a reflection of a changing approach to hitting amid a team-wide slump? Or just a coincidence? How did Jared Jones pitch a solid game despite not having his best stuff? And looking ahead to Friday, what will Paul Skenes do in his second MLB start? Jason tackles those questions, gives his thoughts on the Steelers' Najee Harris coming to offseason workouts motivated and encourages the Penguins not to trade defenseman Marcus Pettersson this offseason.
