The Cardinals' offense was led by Masyn Winn and Lars Nootbaar, who were key contributors at the plate. Brady Singer took the loss for the Reds. Cincinnati managed only one run, with their offense unable to capitalize against Pallante and the Cardinals' bullpen. This win marked the Cardinals' fourth straight victory, improving their record to 41-35, while the Reds fell to 39-36.

Brenden Schaeffer breaks down the latest loss for the St. Louis Cardinals, their sixth in a row as the lineup has fallen to a wimper on a nightly basis lately.Lars Nootbaar is 0-for-23 with 13 strikeouts in his last five games. There's no chance he can remain the Cards' leadoff hitter. But let's recognize that the Cardinals have bigger issues than that -- this is not a slump that rests on one man's shoulders. The problem is, everything that is going wrong is happening at the same time.Plus, it's not a year where the front office is expected to have urgency in fixing any of it.We break all of that down and more on this latest episode.Follow this podcast feed for daily Cardinals content all year!

Post-Dispatch podcasts page: https://go.stltoday.com/0hfn43 Please consider subscribing: https://go.stltoday.com/9aigz5 A big, defining topic for the Cardinals' future and their development of a big, defining hitter needs a jumbo-sized Best Podcast in Baseball. For more than a decade, the Cardinals have had to go shopping for their middle-order hitters -- either by trade (Paul Goldcshmidt, Nolan Arenado, Marcell Ozuna) or, rarely, by free agency (Carlos Beltran, Willson Contreras) -- but during this "reset" year where offense has been a major part of their success, the Cardinals seem closer to having homegrown hitters in the middle of the order to build around. Brendan Donovan, currently hitting No. 3, leads the league in doubles and hits. Candidates to climb up to cleanup include Ivan Herrera. There is the catch. Herrera's bright future as a hitter seems clear. Less so, is where he fits at catcher. Kevin Wheeler, host at KMOX/104.1 FM, joins the Best Podcast in Baseball to discuss all of the ramifications of this question: Can the Cardinals develop the middle of the order for a contending team? It's a question thick with implications. With St. Louis Post-Dispatch baseball writer Derrick Goold, Wheeler discusses Herrera's fit as a potential cleanup hitter, what it means that the Cardinals have an advancing group of catching talents in the minors, and whether Herrera needs to be flanked by a fellow prospect for the Cardinals to have a strong lineup. The cost of surefire middle-order hitters is only going up, and increasingly all teams need both lightning and thunder to come from within the house. This BPIB discusses whether the Cardinals need to have Jordan Walker and/or Nolan Gorman join the middle of the order for their development summer to be a success, and where Alec Buleson, JJ Wetherholt, Lars Nootbaar, and Masyn Winn best fit into the lineup of the future. The Cardinals, with 10 different players who have at least 15 RBIs, are cranking out the hits this season and they've won 18 of their past 23 because of the depth of their lineup. Is that what the future holds as well -- not one or two hitters that are the fulcrum of the lineup but a depth that goes all the way to the speed at the bottom? The answer could be the key whether the Cardinals contend in the years they're looking toward as well. The Best Podcast in Baseball, sponsored by Closets by Design of St. Louis, is a weekly production of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, StlToday.com, and Derrick Goold.
Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals coming from behind to win over the Orioles on Tuesday night in Baltimore.Lars Nootbaar put together a big day including a home run to help push the Cards out to a lead, and Andre Pallante was rolling along to maintain it -- until he wasn't.A 3-run homer for Baltimore meant the Cardinals had to find a way to come from behind. Nolan Gorman was tasked with a key spot against a lefty in the sixth inning, but was unable to tie the game, somewhat predictably. Brenden explains why Oli Marmol was anything but blind to that moment -- we have to see the bigger picture in 2025.Rest assured, later swings by Masyn Winn and Nolan Arenado put the Cardinals back ahead. And then lo and behold, we saw the 'runway' crew Gorman and Jordan Walker go back-to-back triples to help pad the newly-found lead.A lot to like about this one from the Cardinals perspective.Follow this podcast feed for daily Cardinals coverage all year!

What if they aren't? What if they're in the middle? And how much influence would Chaim Bloom have over that deadline, or is it all John Mozeliak?Would Nolan Arenado still want out at the deadline? The Cardinals wouldn't trade guys like Brendan Donovan and Lars Nootbaar, right? On April 30, 2025, the Cincinnati Reds faced the St. Louis Cardinals in a split doubleheader at Great American Ball Park, prompted by the postponement of the previous night's game due to heavy rain and severe weather threats. The Reds, riding a five-game winning streak and holding a 16-13 record, aimed to maintain their momentum in the National League Central. However, the doubleheader proved challenging, resulting in a sweep by the Cardinals and exposing areas of concern for Cincinnati. In Game 1, starting at 12:40 p.m. ET, the Reds fell 6-0. Brady Singer, Cincinnati's starter, pitched six scoreless innings, allowing five hits and striking out eight without a walk. Despite his effort, the Reds' offense was stifled by Cardinals' pitcher Miles Mikolas, managing only five hits and no runs. The game remained scoreless until the ninth, when Reds reliever Alexis Díaz struggled, surrendering three consecutive home runs to Victor Scott II, Lars Nootbaar, and Masyn Winn, who hit his second of the game. Díaz allowed five runs, ballooning his ERA and drawing criticism from fans on X for his lack of command, with some calling his pitches “batting practice.” Game 2, starting at 6:40 p.m. ET, saw the Reds lose 9-1. Chase Petty, a 22-year-old top pitching prospect, made his MLB debut as the 27th man for the doubleheader. Petty, called up from Triple-A Louisville, struggled, giving up five runs over four innings. The Cardinals capitalized early, and the Reds' offense again faltered against Steven Matz, scoring just one run. Posts on X highlighted fan disappointment, noting the Reds' combined one run across both games and Petty's rough debut, though some remained hopeful for his future. The doubleheader exposed offensive inconsistencies and bullpen weaknesses, particularly Díaz's meltdown. Injuries also loomed large: outfielder Austin Hays was sidelined with a hamstring issue, and infielder Jeimer Candelario was placed on the 10-day IL with a back injury, retroactive to April 28. Tyler Callihan was called up to fill the gap. Despite the losses, the Reds (16-15) had a chance to split the four-game series in the finale. Under new manager Terry Francona, the team's young core, including Elly De La Cruz and Matt McLain, remains a focal point for optimism as they navigate a grueling 17-game stretch without an off day until May 12.

Coming off a massive sweep of the Twins, the St. Louis Cardinals have lost some of their momentum against the Angels dropping 2 games of a 3 game series. However, there's some massive bright spots in the lineup including Ivan Herrera, who had a 3-homer day, Jordan Walker, Victor Scott II and Lars Nootbaar. Are we concerned about the Cardinals dropping a series to a bad team when everything else is looking so good?
Post-Dispatch podcasts page: https://go.stltoday.com/0hfn43 Please consider subscribing: https://go.stltoday.com/9aigz5 It would be difficult for the Cardinals to script a better opening weekend for their "transition" year that an emphatic sweep of the visiting Minnesota Twins. The Cardinals got sturdy performances from the starters, stellar play from the defense, and 19 runs in three days from the offsenese. Lars Nootbaar ignited the weekend with a run scored in three of the Cardinals' first four games, and Victor Scott personified the three-game series sweep of the Twins with a dynamic catch in the opener, two stolen bases in the middle game, and the decisive three-run homer in the series finale. The Cardinals put on a show. And some of the smallest crowds in Busch Stadium history were there to see it. How can the Cardinals grow a team and regrow the crowds? Will one assure the other, or are the Cardinals entering more than a "transition" year in the front office and actually embarking on a whole new product to sell fans? Maybe reset wasn't the word after all. This is a rebranding. Post-Dispatch sports columnist Jeff Gordon joins Best Podcast in Baseball host Derrick Goold to discuss the first four games of the Cardinals season and how they came a late-game bullpen leak away from starting 4-0. The Cardinals established their identity early, and the question becomes whether they can maintain it to be competitive in the National League Central. But that isn't the only question. Competitive is quaint. Competitive is the expectation. Moving merch is essential. Will a style of play be enough? Will winning be enough? After several years of selling nostalgia to fans, the Cardinals need more than a clear message about the future. They need a brand new way to market the team. The Best Podcast in Baseball, sponsored by Closets by Design of St. Louis, is a production of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, StlToday.com, and Derrick Goold. It's hard to believe that Cardinals pitchers and catchers will report to Spring Training in just 2 days for the 2025 season. Which position battles and storylines are we watching as camp begins? Will the young arms get the chances they need for a youth movement? FanGraphs has released their ZiPS projections for the Cardinals in 2025. What stood out to us about these numbers? Which players do we think were underrated by the system? Any pleasant surprises? Can the young bats Jordan Walker, Nolan Gorman, Lars Nootbaar, and Brendan Donovan perform well enough to get the Cardinals back to the Postseason and outperform their expectations this year? "Empty seats are empty seats; no-shows are no-shows," says St. Louis Post-Dispatch sports columnist Jeff Gordon. "When you’re just accepting reduced attendance and you’re pointing to that for reduced payroll, now you’re setting yourself up for a spiral." Yet to spend a cent this offseason on a major-league free agent, the Cardinals are banking big on breakthrough seasons from their young players and betting there will be buy-in -- literally -- from fans. The payoff could be sparking interest and ticket sales from fans interested in a new direction, but the risk is significant as the Cardinals could spin into a financial whirlpool that leads to more severe cuts or a complete overhaul once new leadership is in place. In a brand new Best Podcast in Baseball, host Derrick Goold is joined by Gordon to discuss what the Cardinals' actions tell us about their situation and their motives. The Cardinals went 3-for-6 on finalizing deals with arbitration-eligible players, leaving salaries for Lars Nootbaar, Brendan Donovan, and Andre Pallante undetermined for the coming season. They could go to hearings unless there is traction for a multi-year extension. But what does it say if the Cardinals don't pursue any of those? What if this spring is the first spring in awhile without an extension? Could that all be a setup to give Chaim Bloom maximum payroll flexibility when he takes over as president of baseball operations and move on from this roster and even its "next core" players to a deeper rebuild? The Best Podcast in Baseball, sponsored by Closets by Design of St. Louis, is a production of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, StlToday.com, and Derrick Goold. Now entering its 13th year, find BPIB weekly throughout the 2025 season wherever you get your podcasts.
The Cardinals failed to reach agreements on contracts for 2025 with three arb-eligible players before Thursday's deadline. Are Brendan Donovan, Lars Nootbaar and Andre Pallante heading to a hearing against the Cardinals? We'll break down the ins and outs of the respective situations and why it has come to this for these players.
