What is the concept of a “beloved community”? What does a nonviolent approach to communication look like when bridging differences in opinions? In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts and gives her own insights into multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill interviews Dr. Roxy Manning, a Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist, certified Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC) trainer and author of her new book ‘How to Have AntiRacist Conversations'. They discuss Dr. Manning's experiences of occupying different marginalized identities and her realization that she was keeping others “comfortable” at her own expense. She details the importance of people having a chance to tell their stories and understand that their needs matter. Dr. Roxy Manning brings decades of service experience to her work interrupting explicitly and implicitly oppressive attitudes and cultural norms. Have you ever wanted to champion your deeply held values but found yourself hesitating? Do you yearn for a way to hold people accountable without perpetuating division? Dr. Roxy Manning, a clinical psychologist and certified trainer at for the Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC) offers her expertise on these questions in her new book, "The Antiracist Heart: A Self-Compassion and Activism Handbook." (August 29, 2023.) In this thought-provoking work, she invites readers to embark on a transformative journey, combining neuroscience exercises, insightful questionnaires, and introspective journaling prompts. The book not only empowers individuals to stand firmly against racism but also helps foster Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision of Beloved Community. She joins Tavis to discuss how we can address bias and trauma through science and dialogue, to promote understanding in our divided world.
Can one person leverage the power of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) and the power of authentic dialogue to create a more just, equitable world? A world in which a person can be both fierce and compassionate while directly challenging racist speech or actions without shaming the other person? In this podcast, Dr. Roxy Manning, a clinical psychologist, and certified Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC) trainer, shares her journey and passion for nonviolent social justice. She also discusses her two new books that help people learn about their own implicit biases, how to engage in antiracist conversations, and the power of authentic dialogue. Dr. Roxy Manning originally thought that she was going to be a medical doctor. Then, when attending Howard University, an historically black college in Washington, DC, she realized that she disliked chemistry, so she eventually transferred to the City College of New York where she had five different majors before realizing that psychology was something that she found “really intriguing and interesting.” After receiving her bachelor's in psychology, Dr. Manning attended Binghamton University in NY where she earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology. She had her first child while in graduate school and shares a brief story about that experience. She states, “my dissertation adviser, who really was quite amazing, gave me this little, tiny room in the lab where I could put a little play pen and he came with me to campus like almost every day.” After having her third child, Dr. Manning took a break and stayed home and that is when she started a very small private practice where she could see a few clients. During this time, she also learned about Nonviolent Communication, “So, I started doing a lot of training and education in that and started merging those two fields, king of bringing all the things I knew from psychology with working with people individually with nonviolent communication, and then working with organizations.” Dr. Manning is a certified Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC) trainer and integrated NVC into her psychotherapy practice since 2003 and has been offering classes and workshops in NVC since 2005. Throughout our discussion, Dr. Manning openly shares her journey, experiences, and advice not only to those interested in the field of psychology but also to those who want to learn more about their own biases and how to engage in antiracist conversations. Dr. Manning discusses her two forthcoming books. In the first book, How to Have Antiracist Conversations, Dr. Manning provides a new way to conceive of antiracist conversations, along with practical tools and frameworks that make them possible. Her work is grounded in the idea of Beloved Community, as articulated by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as a goal to aspire to and even experience now, in the present, when we give up on the transformative power of human connection within ourselves, with potential allies, and with those who words and actions create harm. In the second book, The Antiracist Heart, Dr. Roxy Manning and Sarah Peyton explain the neuroscience behind concepts such as privilege and its impact on the brain, disgust and coded language, and microaggressions and provide specific exercises and skill sets designed to rewire the brain, in order to unravel implicit bias. Implicit biases begin forming before we have language and are deeply rooted in the subconscious. By combining neuroscience, introspection, and self-compassion, one can disrupt unconscious patterns. During our discussion, Dr. Manning delineates between a “conversation” and “authentic dialogue.” She states, “I think of conversations as we're kind of sharing information, I might be wanting to let you know about my point of view, but that's it. When I think about dialogue, I'm thinking about I'm actually sharing honestly and vulnerably my experience inviting you to share yours with the idea that we can be moved,

"You can learn communication skills, but if you don't know how to pause and slow down, the skills won't matter." Eddie Zacapa Communication is at the centre of all functional relationships. How people communicate can bring a significant difference in the quality of their lives individually and within communities. Our guest today, Eddie Zacapa, has years of experience training people on how to communicate differently and says that it's all about the lens with which people view issues. Eddie Zacapa is the co-founder of Life Enriching Communication and a certified trainer with the Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC). He has facilitated nonviolent communication workshops, trainings and programs with individuals, families, parents, schools, and organizations and worked in the domestic violence field for over 19 years. Eddie also offers coaching to executives and managers and helps volunteers and employees discover their full potential on the job. He has worked with volunteers for over 20 years with various non-profit organizations providing volunteer management. He lives in Sacramento, CA, with his family. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism from San Jose State University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Bible and Theology from William Jessup University. Eddie is the author of two books: Principles and Practices of Nonviolence: 30 Meditations for Practicing Compassion; https://amzn.to/3kjKboo and Essentials for Cultivating Passionate Volunteers and Leaders: Guidelines for Organizations that Value Connection-https://amzn.to/3zjLHLo. In today's episode, Eddie talks about nonviolent and effective communication. He will also present the steps to communicating and making meaningful connections in any given situation. Listen in! Contacts: Website: www.lecworks.org I'm the founder of Life Enriching Communication, an organization dedicated to ending domestic violence and the cycle of violence. [2:40] We work with individuals who come to us voluntarily or sometimes through the court, and we help them discover their power over tendencies and how they can change that. [2:50] I also teach nonviolent communication, which is rooted in nonviolence to organizations, couples and families. [3:20] Sometimes we use the power that we have to get what we want without thinking about the other person necessarily and what their needs are at that moment. [4:50] Everybody has power, and it is not a bad thing since it allows you to do something. However, collaboration happens when you use that power with the resources others have. [5:29] I was working in ministry, but then I decided to change my career, and my mom introduced me to someone at her church who did this work with. [6:07] The first time I got there, I connected with the individuals who were there and I got hired there, so that started my journey. [6:35] I was also drawn to it just because I could relate to it in some ways from my experience growing up. [6:47] Along the way, I got introduced to nonviolent communication by a certified trainer, and that process just blew my world, and I started living it out and teaching it. [7:11] One of the things I try to get across early is, if you do anything because you have to, you will pay for it. [7:48] I tell the people I teach that being there was an opportunity for them to learn and grow regardless of whether they deserved to be there or not. [8:16] It is really important to continue doing this because it makes a difference by bringing awareness to what abuse is and making people feel comfortable and safe reaching out for help. [10:05] We need to work together and have the police department and fire department to be able to be in touch with the needs of each community and to just feel comfortable with each other. [11:53] Commercial Break. [12:18] One of the first components of nonviolent communication focuses on differentiating between what's happening and the story we tell ourselves in our heads. [14:31] Being able to differentiate and get down to what happened can be helpful. [15:22] The next step is connecting with what happened and assessing your feelings about the truth, and then finding out what you value in the situation. [15:30] The last part is just making a request that is very specific and doable. [16:15] Another valuable piece is if you're struggling to connect with someone else, you can close your eyes and just imagine what they might be feeling and their needs. [16:32] By doing that, you're able to see that person's humanity, and you're not creating an enemy image with that story and that a lot of times helps you find a solution as well. [16:48] You can learn communication skills, but if you don't know how to pause and slow down, the skills won't matter. [17:58] We're trying to see what people wish for and what their value is in a particular situation. [19:39] When we make a request, remember that when we hear a 'NO', it is a gift because it tells us that there's something really important to somebody else. [22:10] There's a need behind that NO, and if we can discover what it is, we can find a solution that works for everybody. [22:40] …………………..….. Nonviolent Communication: communicating with clarity and empathy.Dr. Marshall Rosenberg developed the concept of Nonviolent Communication – or NVC – and founded the Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC). Very generally, the NVC approach can be broken down into four parts: observing a situation -- without evaluation or judgment; noticing the feelings the situation brings to the surface; understanding what need or value is causing those feelings; and requesting concrete actions that you would like taken that would better meet your needs.
Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is based on the principles of nonviolence-- the natural state of compassion when no violence is present in the heart. NVC begins by assuming that we are all compassionate by nature and that violent strategies—whether verbal or physical—are learned behaviors taught and supported by the prevailing culture. NVC also assumes that we all share the same, basic human needs, and that each of our actions are a strategy to meet one or more of these needs. People who practice NVC have found greater authenticity in their communication, increased understanding, deepening connection and conflict resolution. Sura Hart is an internationally recognized trainer with the Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC) and is the contact person for CNVC’s efforts to integrate NVC into U.S. schools. She designs and facilitates trainings and curricula for students, parents, teachers and school administrators around the globe. Sura has been a classroom teacher in public and private schools and has created after-school programs on leadership, effective communication, healthy sexuality and conflict resolution for at-risk youth.
