A lot of adults have no clue about their role within the order of the arrow. It's important to remember that they are no longer running things or actively engaged in running the lodge or chapter. Adult Scouters should look to becoming more of a mentor and advise youth leadership. Being an active role model for the youth is important to inspire tomorrow's leaders. Working as an advisor for any aspect of your chapter or lodge is a worthwhile endeavor.

A very popular answer to this question is YES! Many new adult leaders were once involved in the Order of the Arrow. Now that they are back in scouting they are wondering how to reestablish their membership. Hopefully, this video helps Scouters get back involved with their lodge. Membership in the order of the arrow is permanent regardless of where or when you did ordeal or brotherhood. It's just a matter of re-establishing the connection. All adult leaders that have been in the Order of the Arrow can reestablish membership. This includes Cubmasters, Den Leaders, Committee Chair, Charter Organization Representative, etc. It's recommended that you commit to getting involved in your lodge and chapter as much as you possibly can.

By far the most important Arrowmen in your chapter. They bring new growth and new ideas with solutions that you have never thought of. One of the mysterious positions is that of the Elangomat. This is a youth or adult OA member who has undergone training to lead a clan (a group of 5-8 Scouts) through the ordeal process. The Elangomat performs their duties silently as an example of brotherhood, cheerfulness, and service. After the Ordeal, the Elangomat may be in contact with the new Ordeal members to encourage them to complete their membership process by going through Brotherhood. Many members of the OA brotherhood have taken on the responsibilities of Elangomat and have been recognized by their Chapter and Lodge.

Order of the Arrow cataloging going back 50 years is the topic of this month’s Scouting Hot Finds Insiders Round Table. Bill Mulrenin served as the New York State Editor on the Blue Book project for the last 3 editions. So in the discussion we take it all the way back to Bill Price books of the 1970s to describe how far this has come. The next big leap forward that we cover is the 1979 publication of the Arapaho book which really helped the hobby. The key feature here was adding high quality images to help with the identification. We didn’t mention it (sounds like a topic for another Round Table) but there is also tons of great historical data in the Arapaho uncovered from National BSA records. Finally we single out multiple ways that the Blue Book published in 1996 really improved OA cataloging. Over the six editions of the Blue Book things such as chronological listing, decimal numbering, as well as including neckerchiefs, chapter issues and event issues were big improvements. If you are a Boy Scout patch collector I think you will find this video to be very educational as Bill has a wealth of history in the hobby to share.

There are adult leader positions within the Troop or Crew where they can serve as an advisor. Keeping a good eye on the OA and unit schedule is important. It is important that we observe and preserve the traditions of the Order of the Arrow. Many of the mysterious questions are answered in this video without revealing its method. It would be natural to think of the Vigil Honor as the third and final step of membership, but this is often perceived incorrectly. The Order of the Arrows Brotherhood has a long membership process. Otherwise, you should make plans to attend your Ordeal. This is only the beginning of your membership process in the OA. Many brothers take the ordeal and never return to any OA events. The Order of the Arrow (OA) is Scouts BSA National Honor Society. The OA was founded by Urner Goodman and Carroll Edson in 1915. Founded on the principles of Brotherhood, Cheerfulness, and Service. The OA is NOT a secret society. “Discreetness helps enhance the experience.” Youth Protection is always in effect. Everyone in the OA is referred to as “brothers” regardless of gender. The order is a Brotherhood of all honored scouts. The Order of the Arrow is youth lead. Adults fulfill an advisory, mentoring, and non-voting role. Depending on your location, elections are held with all scout troops and venture crews once a year. The adult leadership of each unit is contacted by the OA lodge or chapter youth to make election arrangements. Elected candidates go threw a voluntary “ordeal” to start the membership prosses. Later ordeal members can complete their membership by going threw brotherhood. Many unit leaders are concerned that the OA will distract the older scouts away from their unit. OA membership helps retain the interest of older scouts and keeps them involved in the unit leadership.

I'm relatively new to trading and I'm going to NOAC this year." I started to fire off a message back when I realized that this was probably a topic that a lot of Arrowmen were curious about.  I'm estimating that only 1/5 youth at the 2015 NOAC will be veterans of the last conference in 2012.  So very few of them have had any experience going to a NOAC and might be curious for some tips just like Krishna.I spent some time writing an outline and just hit record.  I talked for almost 45 minutes straight through without taking a break or hitting the edit button.  This might be the first time in years that I've just recorded my stream of thought and never edited a single word in post-production.  However, I'm extremely happy with the result.  I think the content in this show will be very valuable for any Arrowmen (youth or adult) that has never attended a National OA Conference.  What you get here is my unfiltered opinion and I'm sure I'm going to make a few people mad with me for that reason.Find more Scouting memorabilia content and all of my podcasts at http://www.scoutpatchcollectors.com.

Today's episode of the podcast takes the question to one of the young guns in the hobby Nick Wolf of the Connecticut Yankee Council and Owaneco Lodge 313. Nicknamed the "Patch King" by his own lodge brothers because at such a young age he seemed to be loaded with tons of cloth, Nick has developed a unique social media strategy to turnover his inventory.I have been buying/selling for a long time and I got lots of great ideas from listening to Nick share his strategy. In many ways it runs counter to what the typical trader in this hobby would think. Nick would rather sell 100 $1 patches than 1 $100 patch. Many people on Facebook and especially in the Scout Patch Collectors Facebook Group will know Nick from his Cyber Monday Deal sheet. He just wrapped up his 3rd annual sale and was able to surpass what he sold from the first and second combined. However, his strategy doesn't center around a 1/year offer. When Boyd Williams attended the 1981 National Boy Scout Jamboree and traded a few patches he probably never thought he'd eventually become one of the well-known collectors in Tennessee.  However, after moving back home to Franklin, Tennessee in 1994 and getting back active in Scouting he soon caught the patch collecting bug.  As an active Scouter in the Middle Tennessee Council and Wa-Hi-Nasa Lodge 111 he started collecting everything local.  Along the way his passion for that local stuff led him to dig deep for council and district activity patches - something that many collectors ignore.  In fact one of the reasons he states for getting into that niche is that others were'nt interested in it.  So back around 2005 even though he admits to not being a computer genius he started building a website to document his collection and preserve the history of the activity patches from his council.  http://www.mtcpatches.com was built using a now defunct software program so when it crashed in 2013 he got help from a local Scouter and set about building it back from scratch.  Today, the website has neat district maps and every council and district patch that he knows of.  Boyd has even expanded to add a category for the Grimes Canoe Base and the shoulder insignia of the MTC.  In our interview Boyd and I talk about all this and I share how his site is an inspiration for me and should be to others. The effort to catalog and describe all known Order of the Arrow issues has been ongoing since the 1950s.  Many old collectors will remember the Bill Price books that had a picture of each flap and attempted to describe the restrictions.  David Leubitz had a book – the original Blue Book that tried to catalog the issues and introduced the vocabulary that many collectors are familiar with today such as “S” for solid embroidered flap and “F” for not fully embroidered flap.  Later Albertus Hoogeveen and Richard Breithaupt revolutionized this effort with Arapahoe that was published in 1976 with pictures.  The Arapahoe II Supplement was published in 1988 and reorganized the original catalog based on new information.  Perhaps it was this renumbering of issues that led some collectors to begin work on a new Blue Book effort that would have a structure of national (4), regional (18) and lodge (100+) editors to make the final determinations on cataloging Order of the Arrow memorabilia. In this session that was recorded at the Dallas TOR in 2013 there is a discussion led by Roy More of TSPA that catches up on that history and explains what is going on with Blue Book 2.0. The Blue Book was published in 1996 and eventually the printed book included 5 editions that came in two year intervals.  The final version was released almost completely as a digital product in 2006. Johnny Sneed of Louisiana is also  in on the session and he served as one of the original regional editors and volunteered his time and talents to lay out the massive book.  You can also hear the voice of Todd Rogers who chimes in with some good points. Much of the second half of the session is a brainstorming chat about how to redo the numbering and classification system of OA patches. Way back before there was the Scout Patch Collectors Facebook Group there was a time Yahoo was doing some really cool things with groups.  From 1999 - 2006 the largest place for Scouters to meet up online and swap stories and patches was the Scouting Collectors Society.  With a brilliant strategy to use club patches as incentives Deryl Radder grew his Yahoo group into a prolific trade-o-ree on the net.  Just when everyone was worried that the lights were going to go out on Dec. 31, 1999 he hosted an incredible Y2K TOR that went on for a couple of days straight.  The SCS also spun off the Lodge Members Society for OA collectors and included state rooms and groups for other topical trading and collecting areas.  As Deryl has noted online it took just about a year for the new Facebook group to eclipse his peak numbers and he sees the potential for a 10,000+ member Scout Patch Collectors Facebook Group.  Listen in to hear Deryl share the story of the Scouting Collectors Society including the details of his incentive plan that involved producing perhaps 100+ unique club patches.  When he suddenly pulled the plug on the Yahoo Groups in 2006 not everyone was happy but he will share his reasons in this interview. In this episode of Scouting Hot Finds I'm going to tackle two big questions that a lot of people have when dealing with Boy Scout memorabilia.  The first is how to get started whether through an estate sale, craigs list, or finding a trading assistant willing to help you.  The second part of the show is a little bit more sophisticated and discusses the various online alternatives you have.  We will discuss eBay of course but also what are the alternatvies to this monolithic auction site with increasingly stinging fees and policies. I'm goign to REALLY crunch the numbers on this show and tell you what the fees translate out to.  You can hear just what a profit margin you can look to make on eBay. I've had my own off-eBay site for more than five years and I'll share my experiences and ideas.  I will take live phone calls so get your questions ready and let's talk shop! If you have been collecting Boy Scout memorabilia for some time then the names Arapahoe and its principal author Albertus Hoogeveen will be familiar names.  Today in collecting circles we talk about the Blue Book as the primary reference guide for Order of the Arrow (OA) collectors.  However before that it was Araphoe II - A History of the Order of the Arrow Through Insignia published in 1979, that die-hard OA collectors cataloged their collection by.  The book was the result of the collaborative efforts of the authors of Arapaho II: Albertus Hoogeveen, Richard H. Breithaupt, Jr. and David C. Leubitz. It was subsequently updated by printed supplements published in 1984 and 1989. By the early 1990’s, Arapaho Software, a partnership between Richard H. Breithaupt, Jr., Albertus Hoogeveen and Douglas E. Beaudoin, moved the hobby into the computer age with Arapaho II On Disk.  My guest tonight on Scouting Hot Finds Radio is none other than Albertus Hoogeveen.  We will hear the first person story of how the Arapaho series got started and how it changed the hobby of collecting Boy Scout memorabilia.
