From the youth uprising of Bangladesh in summer of 2024 which overthrew the Awami-led government, a new nation is beginning to sprout. Watch and listen to the interview on RTL Today. Bangladesh doesn't hit international headlines so often unless it's for cyclone reasons. It's been quiet and slightly hidden from global news discussion. Why was that? Well last summer, the youth of Bangladesh ensured their desires for their country was heard. During July and August 2024, the youth of Bangladesh rose up against the Awami League-led government of Bangladesh, with nearly a thousand young people killed. Sheikh Hasina was the longest serving Prime minister, and is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the first president of Bangladesh. Her regime was known to be authoritarian and she's now in self-imposed exile since the uprising.  In October 2024, a team of ten students and three teachers from various Luxembourg high schools, who had been corresponding with Friendship secondary schools in Bangladesh for over a year, went to meet the young people and learn about some of the challenges of Bangladesh.  On my show this week, Aysha Siddiqua Tithi and Mir Mahbubur Rahman (Snigdho) talk about their experience, losses and the future they hope for.  Mir Snigdho, 25, is the twin brother of Mir Mugdho, who was shot dea by police whilst trying to supply water to demonstrators. His twin brother Snigdho now heads up the July Shaheed Smrity Foundation, to help the victims of the violence of July-August 2024. Mir Mahbubur Rahman (Snigdho), has a background in law and a passion for social impact and the “transformative power of collective action”. Aysha Siddiqua Tithi, 22, is a 3rd year university student who was at the forefront of the July protests and accompanied Professor Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate (2006) and current Chief Advisor of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, to the United Nations General Assembly last September.  Tithi is Project Director at WOOW (Work for Orientation and Organizing the World), and currently a third-year Computer Science student at BRAC University.  Snigdho encompasses the passion these young people have in turning the weight of history into something positive for Bangladesh: “The Quota Movement of 2024 was a moment of sacrifice and resilience. The Movement is deeply personal to me because I lost my own (identical twin) brother during this struggle. His sacrifice has been a profound source of inspiration, driving me to work tirelessly toward building a better future for those who have faced similar losses. This tragedy has given me a strong sense of purpose, motivating me to ensure that every sacrifice is honoured and that no one is left behind in our collective fight for justice and equality. “Witnessing the struggles of my family and  of those who fought for equality and justice has inspired me to dedicate myself to ensuring their voices are not forgotten. Through the foundation, I work to provide financial assistance, healthcare, and emotional support to the martyrs and injured, keeping alive the spirit of hope and solidarity that emerged from the movement. This experiences has profoundly shaped my vision for a stronger Bangladesh. I won't let my brother's death be in vain. “I see Bangladesh 2.0 as a land of opportunity, innovation, and inclusion—a nation where the dreams of all citizens are supported and valued. With the right blend of education, leadership, and global collaboration, I believe we can overcome systemic challenges and create a brighter future. My goal is to be part of this transformation, using the skills and knowledge I acquire to contribute meaningfully to the country's development”

Depending on who you ask, it was either extensive or just dipping our toes into the topic. In the end, we received over 1,000 complete responses from a wide range of couples, some for whom BDSM is part of their daily life, others who were engaging in BDSM activities didn't think what they were doing qualified, others who wished they were doing such things but didn't know how to start, and those who thought it was disgusting that I even considered asking questions about such a topic.or the last three weeks, I've spent evenings and weekends digging through the data, coding it, doing pivot tables, building charts, running correlation formulas, and more, trying to get what I can out of it. Episode 232: What Would It Say?

Warm Thoughts

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 30, 2024 2:58

During July, in the month when we celebrate independence day, many patriotic thoughts come to mind as I see "Old Glory" wave high in the skies. If that flag could speak, what would it say? In my thought file, I have the following thoughts about our flag. "I am your flag. I was born on June 14th, 1777. I am more than just a cloth shaped into design. I am the refuge of the world's oppressed people. I am the silent sentinel of freedom. I am the inspiration for which American patriots gave their lives and fortunes. I have led your sons into battle from Valley Forge to the bloody ridges of Korea. I walk in silence with each of your honored dead to their final resting place beneath the silent white crosses, row upon row. I have flown through peace and war, strife and prosperity, and amidst it all I have been respected. My stripes symbolized the blood filled in defense of this glorious nation. My white stripes signify the burning tears shed by Americans who lost their sons. My blue field is indicative of God's heaven under which I fly. My stars, clustered together, unify 50 states as one - for God and country. "Old Glory" is my nickname and proudly I wave on high. Honor me, respect me, defend me with your lives and your fortunes. Never let my enemies tear me down from my lofty position, lest I never return. Keep alight the fires of patriotism, strive earnestly for the spirit of democracy, worship eternal God and keep His commandments and I shall remain the bulwark of peace and freedom for all mankind." Patriotic Thoughts: Patriotism is the sum of the three virtues - faith, hope and charity. Faith in the principles of our government, hope in the future of our country, charity toward all and malice toward none. Patriotism is that spirit that makes us help our neighbors when they are in distress, and extend sympathy when they are stricken. Patriotism is a tugging at our heartstrings in a sincere kinship with those who toil in the field, shop, or marketplace. Patriotism is loving one's country, respecting its traditions, and honoring its people - high or low, rich or poor. God bless America! BMR is 1,542 (based on a calculator I found using the google machine). 199 pounds. On September 1, I started the 30 Day Reset. During July and August, I was more conscious about what I was eating and lost 18 pounds. While doing that, I read Wired to Eat and decided to use September for the 30 Day Reset. Today is September 4, so this is just my 4th day on the reset. Yesterday morning I woke up hungry (which is abnormal for me), but I waited about two hours before I ate breakfast because that's what I'm used to. After getting my day started, I wasn't feeling hungry anymore so it wasn't a big deal to wait to eat breakfast. I typically wake up, I lift for about 30 minutes, some days I take a walk for 1-2 miles, then shower and eat breakfast. I don't normally feel hungry until a couple hours after waking up. Aside from waking up hungry, yesterday and today I have had almost no appetite. Because I lift, I feel like I should be getting a good amount of protein in my diet. Typically I would be eating 25-35g of protein per meal. I had a packet of salmon and some green beans for lunch today, and I basically forced myself to finish so I could get the protein I feel like my body needs. While I'm not trying to make any hardcore gains during the 30 Day Reset, I don't want to lose any muscle mass while I go through this. It just seems like yesterday and today, after I take a few bites of my meal, I'm no longer hungry. So, my questions: Is this loss of appetite normal or should I be concerned that I'm not eating enough? For the past three days, I've been eating 850 - 1,100 calories. Should I eat more even if I have to force myself because I'm not hungry? Thank you!   DIM Supplement Causing Sudden Decrease in HDL Susan writes:  Hi Robb and Nicki, Longtime listener... maybe since 2009 ~~ Paleo Solution w' Robb and Greg. Good stuff. As a spry 20 year old in about 2000, I started the Atkin's diet and transitioned to clean eating around 2008. My total cholesterol has always been ~200 and split 50/50 - HDL/ LDL. I've had it tested dozens of times over the years. I've been the same weight since my teen years immediately went back to that weight post pregnancy. My body fat by hydrostatic testing has ranged from 17% - 21% throughout my adult life, with it being more near 17% in my later adult life (more self control about calories I think). I lift weights with intensity 6-7 days per week and keep my calories between 1600-1900 per day. Daily Supplements: Magnesium Vitamin D Cheap little multi Fish Oil DIM I am now 44. I just got my fasting bloodwork done, and my HDL has dropped from 100-110 to 77. My LDL has gone from 100 to 149. Two things have changed in my lifestyle: The addition of the DIM supplement last summer. Before taking DIM, I had horrible perimenopause symptoms. I was waking up in the middle of the night so drenched in sweat that I would need to take a shower. If I wasn't drenched, I was nervous, stressing, mind-spinning and not sleeping. 100% of my symptoms are gone since starting 300mg of DIM before bed.   Simply in an effort to keep calories under control, I've entirely cut nuts out of my diet (I used to eat tons), and I eat a lot less red meat than I used to. I also have started to sometimes eat fake foods, like protein bars, which I never would have previously touched. I've been feeling pretty good, crushing it at the gym, staying lean and mentally pretty clear. So, I was excited to get my bloodwork back. Low-and-behold my LDL is up and HDL is way down. It hasn't been below 100 in the last 20 years. So, I consider this a sudden drop. Also, my kidney function is looking pretty mediocre. eGFR = 81 (sodium and potassium are off too) In any case, my family tends to drop dead like flies at a pretty early age due to cardiovascular disease (skinny little Irish smokers). So, this sudden fluctuation in cholesterol is pretty scary to me. Dr. Google says that taking progestins may cause HDL to drop. Dr. Google also says that DIM causes an increase in progesterone. My question is.... Do you theorize a tie between the DIM supplement and my sudden drop in precious HDL? As a very active person with a 90% clean diet, should I care? The other 10% is protein bars and Chardonnay. There is very little to be said about the long term affects of DIM out there on the interwebs. So, I'm interested to hear your thoughts on it. Thanks! Susan   Vasectomy Research Trevor writes:  Hello, my question harkens back to THRR episode 063. A question was asked about getting a vasectomy. Robb, you referenced someone you know who found research that indicated negative hormonal consequences (less testosterone) following vasectomy. I find myself in the same situation now as a 44 year old over-fat dude considering vasectomy for birth control. My wife has used hormonal birth control methods during our marriage. Now her functional medicine Doctor is encouraging her to cease her hormonal intervention to work on some health concerns. Before I run my business into a scalpel, I'd like to know the potential hormonal risks I'm facing. I've done my amateur keyword searches on jama.org and pubmed, but I can't seem to find the research you mentioned in that episode. The conventional health articles say lower testosterone is not a risk. Can you help me find the research you mentioned? Or some tips on “how to fish” and do better research on my own? Lets take a look at how The numbers of sales and listings for houses and condos on August 1st, stack up against the previous month, and also against the previous year.  For sales figures, we look at the sales that occurred during the month of July, but this year, and 2022. Currently in Winnipeg, we have 1282 houses listed and available on the MLS,  That's up from the 1196 on July 1st, and its actually VERY similar to the number of houses available on Aug 1st LAST YEAR, which was 1263. During the month of July, we sold 693 houses in Winnipeg, with an additional 17 still showing as ‘Pending' so a potential total sales of 710. Compare that to the 843 sold in June, and you can see we're down  around 15% over the previous month. Even more important however, is comparing the stats year over year.  So the number this year was 710, in in July '22 that number was 789,  so we are down 10% over last year as well. In addition, Winnipeg REALTORS reports that the average detached home price is up 2% from same period last year. During July we sold 8 homes at 1 million and more.  The most expensive home sold was in Tuxedo at 4.7 million, and it only took 14 days on the market. To summarize the housing market, let me say this:  The numbers of available listings are at a normal level, while sales are down 10 to 15%.  Winnipeg is currently a much more buyer-friendly market, especially in the 250K to 500K range.  Sales in THIS range are actually down 20%, which makes it a little easier for buyers to find and get a home.   So now lets turn our attention to the condo market in Winnipeg. On august 1st,  we have 369 Condos available for sale, which is up from the 349 on July 1st.  This year's 369 is very comparable to last years 365, so the amount of available inventory is pretty stable, year over year During July we sold 171 condos with another 13 showing as pending, so a potential total sale of 184 units.  While that's down 10% from the 206 we sold in June this year, its actually UP 10% from the 160 units we sold in July of LAST YEAR. This year, condos have been bucking the prevailing trend, and have outperformed houses in Winnipeg.  I maintain that a 300K condo will be a nicer place than a similarly priced house. And with interest rates a little higher than we've been used to, condos offer a reasonably priced alternative to houses in Winnipeg.

In short, it's critical to your productivity to have regular breaks from work. Here's how you can create a recurring Oasis pattern in your schedule. 1.     Start small. Try creating a finish line in your day and commit to stop working after that time.2.     Extend the length of your break. Schedule just one day to do nothing but rest and relax.3.     Plan ahead of time. Schedule a longer vacation, perhaps a week, months in advance so you can prepare and be ready to enjoy it. If you have comments about the show, or suggestions for an excellent future guest, please drop us an email at listen@successproject.show. I would love to hear from you! I look forward to sharing more successful journeys and actionable tips with you next season.Dave Crenshaw develops productive leaders in Fortune 500 companies, universities, and organizations of every size. Warren Wellness MD, is owned by a doctor and physician assistant, targets the burnout, secondary trauma, and mental wellness components of health care professionals through credentialed continuing education in the format of intimate retreats, corporate wellness initiatives, and telehealth counseling services.  We acknowledge the barriers of stigma, culture of perfection, time constraints and lack of resources and provide a “how to” action plan to execute these skills with the goal of saving the lives of those saving the lives of others. Our podcast begins with this powerful personal story… “During July 2020, I stood in a dark room, full of dinging alarms, machines, tubes, and monitors, positioned between a married couple, each in their own bed on either side of me, each attached to their own high-level oxygen, with me covered head to toe in plastic, leaving only a form of my humanistic side to the imagination. I looked into the fearful eyes of a woman on the other side of my Facetime screen explaining to her that both of her parents' health from COVID-19 had declined rapidly and if she did not decide immediately, she would likely lose both parents within the hour.  This couple was my first introduction to the consequences of the pandemic on families and the severity of secondary trauma on health care professionals.” While the past few years have taken a toll on us all in different ways, we're honored to have had this discussion to find ways we can support each other in coming out the other side – perhaps even better than we were before, living more balanced and meaningful lives. In this special episode of the Wellness Warriors Radio podcast, we discuss: A behind-the-scenes story of what it was like working in a hospital COVID unit at the height of the global pandemic Challenges we all face getting what we need for our own personal care and how we can find ways to overcome them The professional stigma healthcare professionals face in taking care of their own health The impact of compassion fatigue and boundaries we need to set when it comes to empathy  Strategies to deal with stress in the moment – even in high-stress jobs  The impact of isolation on our mental, emotional, and physical health Alternative and complementary options to pharmacological psychiatry  Multiple ways to engage in activities prevent burnout The importance of group support to cultivate collective wellbeing And much more… Now more than ever, we want to foster a sense of support and community amongst our tribe of Wellness Warriors. Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents -Cortes Island Air was based in Gorge Harbour in the 1990s. That was before Richard Godfrey sold the company to Mike Farrel in 2000. Farrel relocated to Campbell River, but preserved the company's origins in its new name. CorilAIr is short for Cortes Island Airlines. While the airline now flys out of Campbell River, it still serves Cortes. Operations Manager Shannon Quinn explained, “Cortes Bay is our primary location for pickup and drop offs, maybe three times in one day. Gorge Harbour would be the second, we do a little bit with Mansons Landing, but not as much with Squirrel Cove as we have in the past.” Later that morning, Farrel confirmed that the two or three flights coming into Squirrel Cove every year are probably CorilAir. He added that most of the planes seen flying around Cortes are probably theirs. “There's a lot of different companies in the summer months that come and go. In the winter time, it's probably us. Of course, if they're doing something you don't like, or making a lot of noise, it's not us,” he quipped. The Klahoose Wilderness Resort was added to the list of destinations last summer, with customers flying in from Campbell River, Vancouver and Cortes Island. CorilAIr is now based on the Spit in Campbell River. They have four airplanes: two cessnas that carry up to three passengers and two Beavers that can carry six. CorilAir carries the mail to Refuge Cove on West Redonda Island, Surge Narrows on Read Island and Big Bay on Stuart Island on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Those last two days they also service Blind Channel on West Thurlow Island. From mid May until late September or early October, they have scheduled local flights out of Campbell River. (9:30 AM, 12:30 PM and 5:00 PM). “We drop people off on the Discovery Islands, Desolation Sound and pick up anybody that needs to be picked up and return back to Campbell River,” said Quinn. “During July and August, we offer a Vancouver scheduled service out of Campbell River, which services the Islands and Desolation Sound, to take people back and forth to Vancouver.” They set out from Campbell River at noon, pick up any passengers in the Discovery Islands and then proceed south to Vancouver airport in Richmond. The return flight leaves Vancouver at 4:00 PM and, after dropping off any island passengers, ends up at Campbell River. Though CorilAir services most of the Discovery Islands, fights to Quadra are less frequent. Most of the traffic uses the ferry. However they do pick up and drop people off on the Vancouver run, often at April Point, and they sometimes do boat to plane transfers at Heriot Bay. In addition to scheduled flights, people sometimes charter out an aircraft. This can be more economically viable for groups. In the podcast, Quinn mentions of Cortes family of four who saved a couple of hundred dollars by chartering an aircraft on the return trip from the Sonora Resort. (There is a lot more detail about pricing and destinations in the podcast.)

In August, I start planning and thinking about the next mini new year - the school year. During July, I like to reflect and review the past year and begin to dream and plan for the future. No matter the season, I spent a lot of time thinking about and pondering how I invest the minutes of my life. I have always valued every minute and think through how to optimize, prioritize, and maximize each one.  Time management is the process of evaluating where you are in all the areas of your life, determining your priorities, allocating the resources available to you, and making a plan to achieve your goals.  In this podcast, I recap some podcasts on time management. In episode 134, I share how I plan my life in mini years (trimesters). In episode 426, I share how organizing is an optional investment of time today for a potential increase in your time in the future. The Sunday Basket® is an organizational system that will take 60-90 minutes of planning time to free up an extra 5 hours of time each week. More importantly, when you are organized, your brain is free to think and dream, instead of just trying to keep track of to-dos.  Episode 366 is about organizational math. I share how I apply the same benefits of basic math skills to your transformational journey into organization. For any of you who are math phobic, I promise we only talk about addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. In episode 269 I discuss how we make decisions to prioritize either time, money, or motivation. Understanding what is most important in our current situation helps us to decide what approach will result in the most effective outcomes.  I no longer measure value strictly in terms of time or money. Instead, I look for the tangible outcomes of my daily actions. The 100 Day Home Organization Program is priced at 10% of the cost of in-home professional organizers helping to declutter and organize an entire home. However, most of us do not value our time as much as we do our money. Committing financial resources to getting organized helps to motivate people to engage in the 15 minute a day tasks of the 100 Day Program, and actually achieve a transformation of their homes and lives.  Which of your goals are worth an investment of your time, money, and motivation in the next four months?

By Andy Milroy You can read, listen, or watch The forgotten man of Ultrarunning is arguably Hardy Ballington (1912-1974), lauded in 1939 in Natal, South Africa, as “the second Newton” and a “human machine”. Dominant immediately before and after the Second World War, he was awarded the prestigious Helms Trophy for his remarkable performances In England in 1937. The authoritative Lore of Running, (2003) written by Professor Tim Noakes, advocated a training programme drawn up by Hardy Ballington and his archrival and friend Bill Cochrane. The program provided daily, weekly, and monthly training goals in terms of total distance covered; it was focused on gradual progression in training but did not specify the intensity of that training. The goal was to condition the body to run the long distances required for an ultramarathon. Ballington's training strategy was still seen as relevant 70 years later! The Ultrarunning Podcast is included in the People Choice podcast awards in the history category. Please help me by voting for the Ultrarunning History Podcast. During July 2021, go to https://podcastawards.com to register and nominate “Ultrarunning History” in the “History” category. Thanks! Early Family Life Hardy Robert Ballington was born on the 14 July 1912, in Durban, one of the major ports in South Africa. His father was Edward William Ballington and his mother Kate Elizabeth Sims, both born in England. He was one of five brothers and two sisters, the third eldest child, one of twins. 1881 Census record from Staffordshire showing Hardy's father, Edward Ballington as a child in his family. His mother was a sergeant's wife. His father, Edward, came from a peripatetic military family, which was not uncommon during the height of the British Empire. Born in Tynemouth in the north of England in 1870, he enlisted in the North Staffordshire regiment of the army at age fourteen but must have been discharged for some reason. By 1892, at the age of 21, he was working for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway as a shunter/switcher. Life was rough. That year he was convicted for stealing twelve table knives and two pair of carver's knives and sentenced to one month at a prison in Wakefield. A number of years later, Edward likely re-enlisted in the Army at the outbreak of the Boer War. In 1905 he was awarded the South African medal and clasp. David Ballington's birth record In South Africa he met and married an English immigrant, Kate Elizabeth Sims and in 1910 they had their first son Edward William, named after his father. Another son Basil followed in 1911, twins Hardy and Ernest Stanley followed in 1912, Jean in 1914, Doris in 1916, David in 1918 followed by John in 1920. In 1915 the whole family to that date, all four boys, travelled by ship to England, presumably to see grandparents and other relations. This was the first of Hardy's trips to England. Edward's Death Certificate Tragedy struck the young family. In 1921 his father died prematurely in his early fifties, leaving his wife to take care of six children alone. But worse was to follow. In 1924, the 40-year-old Kate Elizabeth gave birth to her eleventh child, but complications and a heart attack caused her death. The baby died.  The six living Ballington children were orphaned. The eldest, Edward, was fourteen years old. Hardy was only eleven. Six minor children initial put in the care of the Society for Protection of Child Life in Cape Town With seemingly no relatives in South Africa, caring for eight orphaned children, with the youngest only four years old, was problematic. The six minor children were initially put in the care of the Society for Protection of Child Life in Cape Town. There was a Children's Aid Society in Durban which could provide some financial and emotional institutional support. In 1923 an Adoption Act had been passed and the Greyville Crèche was a primary school for the care of white children in Durba...

By Davy Crockett Professional ultrarunners/pedestrians of the late 1800s and early 1900s were constantly looking for endurance races or head-to-head matches to prove their abilities and make significant amounts of money. During the mid 1880s, some of them, including popular black ultrarunner Frank Hart, changed out their leather running shoes for roller skates during periods of endurance rolling skate fads. Six-day foot race in Madison Square Garden While not technically ultrarunning, the emerging six-day roller skate races mirrored significantly the six-day foot races that had become the most popular spectator sport for several years in the United States. Why not put wheels on those ultrarunning feet and see what could be done?  The results were fascinating, and in 1885 the Boston Globe left behind very detailed play-by-play results that revealed what these unique races were like. How many miles could an extreme endurance athlete skate in six days on primitive rolling skates? The Ultrarunning Podcast is included in the People Choice podcast awards in the history category. Early Roller Skating Roller skating was thought to be invented as early as 1735 by John Joseph Merlin of Belgium. It was said that while showing off his new wheeled shoes at a party in London, that he crashed into a mirror.  In the early 1800s roller skates were introduced in isolated cases into the theater as an alternative to ice skating performances. In 1854 a French company performed “La Prophet” in New Orleans, Louisiana, and the entire ballet of one hundred performers appeared on roller skates. 1866 advertisement In 1863, the four-wheeled roller skate, or quad skate, was invented by James Leonard Plimpton making it possible for amateurs to participate. The first public roller rink was opened in 1866 by Plimpton in New York City, who also introduced a roller skating academy. At first, he did not mass-market his patented skate and would only let them be used in rinks with maple floors. Cities including Cincinnati, Ohio and St. Louis, Missouri, opened roller rinks. The main worries were that participants would be careless about their attire and would over-exert themselves. “It is true that roller skating is an exercise which soon throws practitioners into a furious perspiration, but it is an established fact that after a person has become even moderately skilled, and does not get excited and confused, there are hardly more perspiration and fatigue induced than are found in a gentle ramble in the shade.” There was also concern that participants would “find their feet have gone off in an unexpected radiation from a common centre.” Many thought the practice was immoral. “Does it improve a young girl's modesty or morals to fall in a heap on a skating rink floor, in the gaze of hundreds, with perhaps her feet in the air and her clothes tossed over her head?  Is it good for her proper training to see other females in such plight?” The Six-Day Race On March 1, 1875, P. T. Barnum, of circus fame, put on the first formal six-day foot race in America, held at his Hippodrome in New York City. It was a $5,000 match race between Edward Payson Weston and Professor Judd. Weston reached 431 miles during that first American six-day race. Six-day cycling started three years later in 1878, in England, with a race between seven competitors held in the Agricultural Hall in London. It was won by W. Cann of Sheffield who reached 1,060 miles. Riders were only allowed to ride 18 hours each day. Into the 1880s, the roller rinks became very successful. In Buffalo, New York, there were at least ten major roller rinks. It was said “If you see a man on the street with a green bag under his arm, no longer set him down as a lawyer.

In today's episode, we're going to talk about perfection. This past week, I've been driving from Florida to Oregon. As I was driving through New Mexico, the car just blows. It stops. There's nothing I can do. I got it towed and now I'm here doing this podcast in a very small town. I'm going to use this story to help explain the concept of perfection because often when humans have a plan to do something, and we try to set it in motion, if it doesn't come out the way we expect it to, we think something's gone wrong. That, brothers, is the biggest misconception of the human experience!  During July in the Academy, we focus on the past. We focus on how the past may appear to be affecting you today even though it's not. The past is never affecting you today, only your thoughts about the past are affecting you today. Last week we spoke about how everything is a story. We live in a story of our world as we experience it, it is a story we tell ourselves.  Continuing from that, what I'm going to introduce to you today in this podcast episode, is that everything is perfect.  You may ask, “How can things be perfect when so much badness, so much wrongness, so much negativity is happening in the world?” The first thing I'm going to do is to define perfection. I'm going to define perfect for you because that's where the big misunderstanding comes from. I'm offering you what the definition of perfection is: that every moment, every moment of our life, every moment of time as it's experienced through the now, is excellent or complete beyond practical or theoretical improvement. Now, just because everything is perfect, and nothing is going wrong, it doesn't mean that you don't want the experience to be something different.  Today we are going to talk about how you don't need to agree with what is happening, it's about accepting what is happening as what is happening. Tune in to discover the power of working with what is happening as it's being offered to you in perfection, rather than pushing against it through resistance.   Want to know more about what I do and how I can help you? Flexible & Adaptive Summer Dance Training Online and In-Person Summer can be a fruitful time to advance our craft, with warm weather and time off from school or (sometimes) work to focus on developing dancing strength, flexibility, balance, endurance, skills, & repertory. Even famous ballet pedagogue Agrippina Vaganova remarked on the particular value of working on your ballet technique in the summer months. Back in the day, I enjoyed summer ballet “intensives” with the Nashville Ballet and my home studio, the West Hawaii Dance Academy. Until I departed for ballet conservatory study at North Carolina School of the Arts, these were unique opportunities to dive deeper and gain exposure in the profession. Later I would teach dance camps and accelerated summer university courses, and I'm always blown away by how much growth and improvement can occur in a short, concentrated timespan! But not everyone has the time or money to invest in extensive training... I'd like to offer an at-home online option that can flexibly meet your needs. Because of its virtual nature, you don't have to participate synchronously in real-time, so you can also start the program anytime! During July, I will present weekly suggested programs to develop body and mind, providing a complement or bridge to online or in-studio practice. You can tailor the program to your needs, with anywhere from 5 minutes to 5 hours per day! 5-15 Minutes per day follow the video plan (full Week 1 details will be on the blog and social media) for dance conditioning to keep you in shape as a complement to light training in other areas, good for those who are strapped for time, but want to return to dance classes in the Fall or at some later time. 1.5+ Hours per day: follow the videos daily and also take a yoga or dance class 2-6 times a week. 3+ Hours per day: One dance and/or yoga class and the training videos daily, also watching recommended performance repertory, opportunity to learn to perform ballet variations, create choreography, and write dance criticism. Have fun customizing your program for your experience, skills, and lifestyle, and please let me know what questions you have and how I can best serve you via email or book a consultation HERE! In order to start strong, establish your goals and find the right program for you, I recommend that you start by completing the Client/Student Profile & Intended Results Google Form. This can be a reflective tool for you, as well as help me tailor content to fit your needs. For more information on Goal Setting for Dancers, you may also consult my blog by that name. July 1, 2021: Saturn and Mars are in opposite directions in the sky. Mars sets as Saturn rises. In about a week, the two planets are visible in the sky at the same time. This event signals that the planet parade is starting to reorganize. During July, three other planet – planet oppositions occur, leading up to a challenging view of the five bright planets during mid-August. Your Daily Astrology and Horoscope Forecast with Kelli Fox

OVERVIEW   Your challenge this year, Capricorn, is to work out what you truly value. Financial constraints may prevent you from doing some of the things you’d love to do, but events will show you how happiness doesn’t depend on material things. A Mars- Uranus conjunction on January 20 th  in your pleasure zone may be a catalyst for some of this frustration, as something you want remains financially just out of reach.   This build-up heads straight into the first, in mid-February, of three transformational Saturn-Uranus squares due this year. Not getting what you want, whether it’s a vacation, hobby materials you can’t afford, or someone’s attention, ruffles you deeply and you may become unusually agitated, especially when Mars trines Pluto on February 25 th .   You may find some answers when you manage to increase your income, Capricorn: late March and late April both show promise here, with Mars in trine aspect first to Saturn and then to Jupiter, hinting at new income streams or a profitable side hustle. Creatively, you’re on fire too, especially in late April when the Sun and Venus both conjunct innovative Uranus in your creativity zone. However, the Lunar Eclipse in your spiritual zone in late May highlights a gap in your life that can’t be filled by buying expensive pleasures. The following Solar Eclipse on June 10 th  occurs in your work routines zone, asking you to make space in your life for the more intangible, less material issues. And yet just a few days later, the second of the Saturn-Uranus squares again suggests frustration over your financial limits. The message doesn’t seem to be getting through at this point.   During July and August, however, you’ll enjoy some profound experiences which will shift your thinking away from materialism. When Mars in your growth zone opposes Saturn in your money zone on July 1 st , you’ll start to understand what money cannot buy; this may be reinforced, especially in terms of your love life, during the passionate Venus-Mars conjunction in your growth zone in mid-July. Early August sees Venus in trine aspect to both Uranus and then Pluto, showing you how learning, travel, creativity, love and joy are all things which bring you exceptional happiness and which, largely, do not depend on money.   Your career continues to be important to you, of course, notably in October when Mars trines Jupiter from your career zone. However, Jupiter turning direct in your values zone on October 18 th  underlines your new-found commitment to greater things than materialism. The Lunar Eclipse on November 19 th  occurs in your joy zone and could indeed bring great joy – while the Solar Eclipse on December 4 th  is in your spiritual zone, marking an exceptionally poignant moment for you.   During the holiday period, the final Saturn-Uranus square takes effect and you may feel under the same kind of financial pressure as is normal for this time of year – but Venus’ short retrograde period, in your own zodiac sign, Capricorn, reminds you to reflect on the importance of love and happiness away from the consumerism of the season. LOVE AND RELATIONSHIPS The ‘what you want’ zone of your chart, activated by this year’s three Saturn- Uranus squares, typically reflects issues around hobbies or creative projects, but it also has a key role to play in love, speaking to the flirtatious, magical, intoxicating stages of a relationship – or to illicit love, or love which involves risk. Because this zone is so triggered by this year’s cosmic events, your love life could be tumultuous, depending on how settled and established your relationship already is.   In late January, Venus conjuncts Pluto in your own zodiac sign, which could suggest something dramatic around an intense relationship. Or, if you’re single, Capricorn, a meeting which seems somehow ‘fated’ or ‘meant to be’. However, this leads into the first of the Saturn-Uranus squares in mid-February, which pit the value of the status quo against the value of something new and different. In love, it’s easy to see how this may relate to an intense, new attraction versus an existing, stable relationship. In late February, you’ll feel significantly less risk- averse than normal, particularly when Mars trines Pluto, so this could be a factor.   April 23 rd  may also be an important date in your love calendar. On this date, passionate – but volatile – Mars shifts into your love zone. On the same date, Venus conjuncts rebel Uranus in your love affair and risk zone; one week later, the Sun repeats the conjunction. In an existing relationship, you may feel bored or frustrated. In a new relationship, the intensity may seem all-consuming.   May’s Lunar Eclipse is in the most private and secretive zone of your chart, Capricorn, suggesting that anything hidden may not stay that way for long: this is not a good time to be lying in love. Indeed, the Mars-Pluto opposition on June 5 th  highlights a power struggle or control issue in an existing relationship, just days before the Solar Eclipse wreaks unwanted changes on your daily routines. This in itself comes just days before the second of the Saturn-Uranus squares pitting your values against your desires.   During July and August, you will have plenty of opportunities to decide what you want in your yearly love. Travel is suggested, especially in early August when Venus trines Uranus and Pluto, and travel or educational opportunities link to love, learning and your own identity. However, it may not really be until Jupiter turns direct in your values zone on October 18 th  that the fog finally clears in your love life. A month later, on November 19 th , the Lunar Eclipse in your risk and love affairs zone should signal a turning point in matters of the heart. Use the energy of the Solar Eclipse on December 4 th  to retreat and consider your position in love.   In December, Venus in your own zodiac sign forms two intense conjunctions with Pluto – one on the 11 th  and the second on the 25 th , after having turned retrograde on the 19 th . Expect to re-visit the decision you made around the time of the Lunar Eclipse; this is your second chance to get things right. The third and final Saturn- Uranus square in late December will create tension once again, but with Venus due to turn direct on New Year’s Day, 2022, you will know where your heart wants to go, Capricorn. MONEY AND CAREER   Your income seems to be a key concern of yours during 2021 – no matter how financially secure you may be, you’ll sense a need or a desire to earn more, which will conflict with changes in your values and your slow transition to a less materialistic style of life. The first hints of this come in mid-January, when Mars squares up to Saturn and Jupiter squares up to Uranus, but the first real hit will come in mid-February when the first Saturn-Uranus square becomes exact.   If you work in the creative industries, Capricorn, February does have some good news, notably the Mars-Pluto trine on February 25 th . In any other industry, March looks like a promising month. Mars moves into your everyday work zone, driving you forwards and streamlining your schedules, making you more productive ahead of a stabilizing Mars-Saturn trine on March 22 nd .  April 17 th  also brings promise, with an inspirational Mars-Jupiter trine, which is especially helpful for those working in the media, IT, tech or science fields.   May’s Lunar Eclipse is likely to give you pause for thought regarding your current career path, and whether it truly aligns with your values or not. When Mercury turns retrograde in your working zone on May 29 th , you’ll have a few days to consider your options ahead of a dramatic Solar Eclipse in your working zone on June 10 th . Be aware that doing nothing is a decision in itself in the eyes of the universe, Capricorn, and that eclipses tend to force our hand when we’re reluctant to otherwise act. Just a few days later, the second of the Uranus-Saturn squares highlights money, or the lack of it, and the freedom it may or may not buy you.   There are warnings in July and August not to borrow too much, Capricorn, or to be careful around matters of investment and debt. Be sure to take expert advice, especially around July 1 st , when Mars opposes Saturn from your debt zone, and on August 20 th , when the Sun opposes over-enthusiastic Jupiter from the same place.   If you are looking to shore up your career position, however, September should be a positive month. Mars arrives in your career zone early on, and both Mars and the Sun form supportive trines to Saturn late in the month. This may see you involved in a promotion of some kind, as may the Sun-Mars conjunction in your career zone on October 8 th .   In mid-October, generous Jupiter turns direct in your money zone, which is typically a good sign for your income. Over the next few days, Mars trines Jupiter and squares Pluto, providing a further boost to your income, although potentially at a cost to your deeper values. The Lunar Eclipse on November 19 th  occurs in your creativity zone and may fill you with inspiration for the future.   During December, however, the early Solar Eclipse in your privacy zone may give you pause for thought again about your future career direction. Use the energies of the third and final Saturn-Uranus square, over the holiday period, to force yourself to a conclusive view, one way or the other, so that you can face 2022 with confidence.

Your Daily Astrology and Horoscope Forecast with Kelli Fox

OVERVIEW   During 2021, a major focus will be on your self-expression, Libra, which you may embody through your hobbies, your pastimes or even your wishes for your children. However, with three powerful, rare Saturn-Uranus squares set to come into force, you will need to battle some negativity or self-doubt; you may become particularly risk-averse this year. In Astrology, these squares also activate important love-related areas of your chart, which we’ll look at separately.   In January, squares between Mars and Saturn, and between Jupiter and Uranus, are laying the groundwork for conflict between how you want to express yourself and how circumstances confine you. Don’t be surprised if you feel anxious about family events or your future plans being beyond your total control. Once the first Saturn-Uranus square becomes exact on February 17 th , you may feel trapped by circumstances, or overwhelmingly frustrated.   March brings a confidence boost, however, as Mars shifts into Gemini in your adventure zone, from where it trines stabilizing Saturn, helping to calm some anxieties. Mid-April may well bring creative good news too, as Mars trines Jupiter and expands your horizons. With both Venus and the Sun about to conjunct with unpredictable Uranus in your self-control zone, however, you may be your own worst enemy at times.   In mid-May, Jupiter moves into Pisces, your health zone, boosting your overall wellbeing as well as your self-esteem and your mental health. However, the Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius in late May is in your communication zone, so watch out for your words being dramatically misinterpreted. This is quickly followed by a Solar Eclipse in Gemini, in your learning zone, and the second of the Saturn- Uranus squares: attempts to stretch your creative wings in June may be blocked or poorly received, but don’t lose heart, Libra.   During July and August, look for a good combination of healthy friendships and plenty of rest and alone time, both of which are likely to soothe and calm you. Friends may also be encouraging you to take a leap of faith, but something is still holding you back, as reflected in oppositions between Mars and Saturn in early July and the Sun and Jupiter in late August. Lots of self-reflection and meditation may help, with a Mars-Pluto trine in early September being particularly promising for accessing assistance from your own higher consciousness.   It’s in October that you can expect to make real progress with creativity and freedom. Jupiter turns direct in Aquarius, your creative and risk zone, on October 18 th , followed by a lovely trine from Mars in your own sign, Libra, to Jupiter. The Lunar Eclipse in mid-November falls in your self-control zone and may mark a breakthrough in your approach to freedom; the following Solar Eclipse in your communication zone will help you get your point across.   The final Saturn-Uranus square occurs in the middle of the holiday period, when tensions may briefly resurface. However, once Jupiter enters Pisces and settles back into your health and everyday zone in the last days of 2021, you can expect an easier time ahead.  LOVE AND RELATIONSHIPS In addition to their influence on your self-expression and willingness to take risks, Libra, the chart zones impacted by the three Saturn-Uranus squares of 2021 also relate to intimacy and passion, and to the flirtatious area of love such as dating or non-serious love affairs. Throughout 2021, you may struggle with issues of control and power in a relationship, or a new and intoxicating relationship may become a focal point in your life despite your better judgment. In an existing, settled relationship, these issues are likely to play out as a struggle between boredom versus a step too far.   These tensions first become evident in January, particularly around January 20 th  when impulsive Mars conjuncts shock planet Uranus in your intimacy zone. One week later, Venus conjuncts compulsive Pluto  Capricorn, in your family zone – a reminder that your wider family life will be impacted throughout the year by the choices you make in love.   Just ahead of the first Saturn-Uranus square in February, Venus and Mercury both conjunct joyful Jupiter in your dating zone, in Aquarius, so this would be a prime time to meet someone new. However, an impetuous Mars-Pluto trine from your intimacy zone to your family zone warns of the dangers of moving too far, too fast. In mid-April, the Sun in your love zone, Aries, squares Pluto in your family zone, Capricorn, with another such warning – but with Venus in your passion zone at this point, you may be too involved to step back.   Fast forward into June and the second of the Saturn-Uranus square, and not much has changed. With Venus and Mars both moving into the friendship zone of your zodiac sign during June, however, it’s possible that friends may be a source of support in your love life – or that a friend may become something much more. Towards the end of July, when both Venus and Mars arrive in Virgo, your secrets zone, look out for anything illicit becoming more public, whether that suits you or not.   Venus is your ruling planet in astrology, so its arrival in your own zodiac sign, Libra, in mid-August is a stabilizing influence. The Mars-Pluto trine in early September is helpful for the impact your love life may be having on your family, and when Mars and the Sun in turn trine stabilizing Saturn from your own sign in late September, it might be possible for a love issue which has caused tumult to become more widely accepted. Watch out for saying more than you should once Mercury turns retrograde in your own sign, however, at the end of September.   Venus moves into Capricorn, your family zone, in early November, restoring peace and harmony – however, Venus turns retrograde here on December 19 th . With the final Saturn-Uranus square occurring just days later, the drama of your love life may have one final twist over the holiday period. Stay calm: Venus is set to turn direct once more on January 1 st , 2022, when you can look forward to a more settled period in love.     MONEY AND CAREER   Much of your year is likely to be focused on love, the home, your children and family and on gaining confidence in your self-expression, Libra. However, it’s important to bear in mind that the major astrological events of the year – the three Saturn-Uranus trines – occur in areas of your chart which can also relate to risk- taking (including with money) and to investment, debt and similar money matters, so you could see some shakeups and surprises in how much money you owe, to whom, and how you can obtain more or pay back what you owe.   The first yearly Saturn-Uranus trine occurs in mid-February when both Venus and Mars are in your risk zone. Try to avoid gambling at this time and seek expert financial advice before making major decisions in business or otherwise. The Sun and spend-happy Venus both conjunct Neptune in your work zone in early March, so this is not a good time to take risks either – however, the Mars-Saturn trine on March 22 nd  could suggest progress or good ideas in a business or career connected to education or travel.   It’s not until late April, when Mars arrives in your career zone, that your attention will really be turned to your career. Imagination and soft skills can be put to excellent use on May 31 st , when Mars trines Neptune – perhaps correcting or adjusting for potential communication mistakes made around the Lunar Eclipse on May 26 th . May looks promising workwise for another reason too, with Jupiter arriving in your work zone on May 13 th  – between then and June 20 th , when Jupiter turns retrograde, you should be able to make a lot of progress. The second Saturn-Uranus square occurs on June 14 th  but does not look like it impacts you a great deal workwise. With Venus in your career zone at that point, you may in any case be able to charm yourself out of any difficulties.   If you work with the public or are professionally involved in social or community issues, July and August could bring points of career tension. The Sun-Jupiter opposition on August 19 th  may feel particularly relevant if you are blocked from moving ahead with a creative idea in this regard. In late September, Mercury turns retrograde in your own sign, Libra, which traditionally suggests some communication issues in business.   Once Jupiter turns direct in your risk zone in mid-October, however, you may be well placed to push ahead with new business ideas, particularly in the creative industries. Look to the Lunar Eclipse in late November for issues with an investment; again, always seek expert advice. During the holiday period, the third and final Saturn-Uranus square may hint at reckless spending – however, in the last days of 2021, Jupiter is set to settle into your everyday work zone for an extended period, which is promising.

“The Doors” by The Doors With their self-titled debut, The Doors burst onto the late 1960's scene on the strength of Jim Morrison's poetry and psychedelic style. There's a dark element to the group. The band takes its name from a book by Aldous Huxley called "The Doors of Perception," and took inspiration from concepts of altered perception. Jim Morrison could not read music or play an instrument but was a poet as well as a singer. His poetry infiltrates all of The Doors music. We hope you enjoy this radical album from a radical age. “Soul Kitchen” This song was a tribute to a restaurant where Jim Morrison spent a lot of time while in film school. “Crystal Ship” This song is the B-side from the single "Light My Fire." B-sides of popular singles often got greater air play during this time. “20th Century Fox” An ode to girls who've "got it" and know they've got it! You may have heard a version of this by 38th Special. “Backdoor Man ” This is a cover song written by Willie Dixon. The Doors change this to make it their own, using a heavy organ element. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: Theme to “The Monkees” Did you know this???? During July 1967, Jimi Hendrix left his role as opening act for The Monkees. WOW! STAFF PICKS: “San Francisco” by Scott McKenzie Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair! This song was written by John Phillips of The Mamas and The Papas, and was used to promote the Monterrey Music Festival. “White Rabbit” by Jefferson Airplane Part Alice in Wonderland, part drug reference, part Bolero, the song “White Rabbit” is one long crescendo from beginning to end. One pill makes you larger, and one pill makes you small. “Whiter Shade of Pale” by Procol Harum It was all just a misunderstanding....listen to learn about the name! This tune reached number 5 on the charts in this month. The writer was inspired by Bach. We skipped the light fandango. “Come on Down to My Boat” by Every Mother's Son Finishing out the organ-heavy podcast, Wayne's pick became Every Mother's Son's only top 40 hit.. The Later Childhood of Jesus (1366.1) 124:0.1 ALTHOUGH Jesus might have enjoyed a better opportunity for schooling at Alexandria than in Galilee, he could not have had such a splendid environment for working out his own life problems with a minimum of educational guidance, at the same time enjoying the great advantage of constantly contacting with such a large number of all classes of men and women hailing from every part of the civilized world. Had he remained at Alexandria, his education would have been directed by Jews and along exclusively Jewish lines. At Nazareth he secured an education and received a training which more acceptably prepared him to understand the gentiles, and which gave him a better and more balanced idea of the relative merits of the Eastern, or Babylonian, and the Western, or Hellenic, views of Hebrew theology. 1. Jesus’ Ninth Year (A.D. 3) (1366.2) 124:1.1 Though it could hardly be said that Jesus was ever seriously ill, he did have some of the minor ailments of childhood this year, along with his brothers and baby sister. (1366.3) 124:1.2 School went on and he was still a favored pupil, having one week each month at liberty, and he continued to divide his time about equally between trips to neighboring cities with his father, sojourns on his uncle’s farm south of Nazareth, and fishing excursions out from Magdala. (1366.4) 124:1.3 The most serious trouble as yet to come up at school occurred in late winter when Jesus dared to challenge the chazan regarding the teaching that all images, pictures, and drawings were idolatrous in nature. Jesus delighted in drawing landscapes as well as in modeling a great variety of objects in potter’s clay. Everything of that sort was strictly forbidden by Jewish law, but up to this time he had managed to disarm his parents’ objection to such an extent that they had permitted him to continue in these activities. (1366.5) 124:1.4 But trouble was again stirred up at school when one of the more backward pupils discovered Jesus drawing a charcoal picture of the teacher on the floor of the schoolroom. There it was, plain as day, and many of the elders had viewed it before the committee went to call on Joseph to demand that something be done to suppress the lawlessness of his eldest son. And though this was not the first time complaints had come to Joseph and Mary about the doings of their versatile and aggressive child, this was the most serious of all the accusations which had thus far been lodged against him. Jesus listened to the indictment of his artistic efforts for some time, being seated on a large stone just outside the back door. He resented their blaming his father for his alleged misdeeds; so in he marched, fearlessly confronting his accusers. The elders were thrown into confusion. Some were inclined to view the episode humorously, while one or two seemed to think the boy was sacrilegious if not blasphemous. Joseph was nonplused, Mary indignant, but Jesus insisted on being heard. He had his say, courageously defended his viewpoint, and with consummate self-control announced that he would abide by the decision of his father in this as in all other matters controversial. And the committee of elders departed in silence. (1367.1) 124:1.5 Mary endeavored to influence Joseph to permit Jesus to model in clay at home, provided he promised not to carry on any of these questionable activities at school, but Joseph felt impelled to rule that the rabbinical interpretation of the second commandment should prevail. And so Jesus no more drew or modeled the likeness of anything from that day as long as he lived in his father’s house. But he was unconvinced of the wrong of what he had done, and to give up such a favorite pastime constituted one of the great trials of his young life. (1367.2) 124:1.6 In the latter part of June, Jesus, in company with his father, first climbed to the summit of Mount Tabor. It was a clear day and the view was superb. It seemed to this nine-year-old lad that he had really gazed upon the entire world excepting India, Africa, and Rome. (1367.3) 124:1.7 Jesus’ second sister, Martha, was born Thursday night, September 13. Three weeks after the coming of Martha, Joseph, who was home for awhile, started the building of an addition to their house, a combined workshop and bedroom. A small workbench was built for Jesus, and for the first time he possessed tools of his own. At odd times for many years he worked at this bench and became highly expert in the making of yokes. (1367.4) 124:1.8 This winter and the next were the coldest in Nazareth for many decades. Jesus had seen snow on the mountains, and several times it had fallen in Nazareth, remaining on the ground only a short time; but not until this winter had he seen ice. The fact that water could be had as a solid, a liquid, and a vapor — he had long pondered over the escaping steam from the boiling pots — caused the lad to think a great deal about the physical world and its constitution; and yet the personality embodied in this growing youth was all this while the actual creator and organizer of all these things throughout a far-flung universe. (1367.5) 124:1.9 The climate of Nazareth was not severe. January was the coldest month, the temperature averaging around 50° F. During July and August, the hottest months, the temperature would vary from 75° to 90° F. From the mountains to the Jordan and the Dead Sea valley the climate of Palestine ranged from the frigid to the torrid. And so, in a way, the Jews were prepared to live in about any and all of the world’s varying climates. (1367.6) 124:1.10 Even during the warmest summer months a cool sea breeze usually blew from the west from 10:00 A.M. until about 10:00 P.M. But every now and then terrific hot winds from the eastern desert would blow across all Palestine. These hot blasts usually came in February and March, near the end of the rainy season. In those days the rain fell in refreshing showers from November to April, but it did not rain steadily. There were only two seasons in Palestine, summer and winter, the dry and rainy seasons. In January the flowers began to bloom, and by the end of April the whole land was one vast flower garden. (1367.7) 124:1.11 In May of this year, on his uncle’s farm, Jesus for the first time helped with the harvest of the grain. Before he was thirteen, he had managed to find out something about practically everything that men and women worked at around Nazareth except metal working, and he spent several months in a smith’s shop when older, after the death of his father. (1368.1) 124:1.12 When work and caravan travel were slack, Jesus made many trips with his father on pleasure or business to near-by Cana, Endor, and Nain. Even as a lad he frequently visited Sepphoris, only a little over three miles from Nazareth to the northwest, and from 4 B.C. to about A.D. 25 the capital of Galilee and one of the residences of Herod Antipas.* (1368.2) 124:1.13 Jesus continued to grow physically, intellectually, socially, and spiritually. His trips away from home did much to give him a better and more generous understanding of his own family, and by this time even his parents were beginning to learn from him as well as to teach him. Jesus was an original thinker and a skillful teacher, even in his youth. He was in constant collision with the so-called “oral law,” but he always sought to adapt himself to the practices of his family. He got along fairly well with the children of his age, but he often grew discouraged with their slow-acting minds. Before he was ten years old, he had become the leader of a group of seven lads who formed themselves into a society for promoting the acquirements of manhood — physical, intellectual, and religious. Among these boys Jesus succeeded in introducing many new games and various improved methods of physical recreation. 2. The Tenth Year (A.D. 4) (1368.3) 124:2.1 It was the fifth of July, the first Sabbath of the month, when Jesus, while strolling through the countryside with his father, first gave expression to feelings and ideas which indicated that he was becoming self-conscious of the unusual nature of his life mission. Joseph listened attentively to the momentous words of his son but made few comments; he volunteered no information. The next day Jesus had a similar but longer talk with his mother. Mary likewise listened to the pronouncements of the lad, but neither did she volunteer any information. It was almost two years before Jesus again spoke to his parents concerning this increasing revelation within his own consciousness regarding the nature of his personality and the character of his mission on earth. (1368.4) 124:2.2 He entered the advanced school of the synagogue in August. At school he was constantly creating trouble by the questions he persisted in asking. Increasingly he kept all Nazareth in more or less of a hubbub. His parents were loath to forbid his asking these disquieting questions, and his chief teacher was greatly intrigued by the lad’s curiosity, insight, and hunger for knowledge. (1368.5) 124:2.3 Jesus’ playmates saw nothing supernatural in his conduct; in most ways he was altogether like themselves. His interest in study was somewhat above the average but not wholly unusual. He did ask more questions at school than others in his class. (1368.6) 124:2.4 Perhaps his most unusual and outstanding trait was his unwillingness to fight for his rights. Since he was such a well-developed lad for his age, it seemed strange to his playfellows that he was disinclined to defend himself even from injustice or when subjected to personal abuse. As it happened, he did not suffer much on account of this trait because of the friendship of Jacob, a neighbor boy, who was one year older. He was the son of the stone mason, a business associate of Joseph. Jacob was a great admirer of Jesus and made it his business to see that no one was permitted to impose upon Jesus because of his aversion to physical combat. Several times older and uncouth youths attacked Jesus, relying upon his reputed docility, but they always suffered swift and certain retribution at the hands of his self-appointed champion and ever-ready defender, Jacob the stone mason’s son. (1369.1) 124:2.5 Jesus was the generally accepted leader of the Nazareth lads who stood for the higher ideals of their day and generation. He was really loved by his youthful associates, not only because he was fair, but also because he possessed a rare and understanding sympathy that betokened love and bordered on discreet compassion. (1369.2) 124:2.6 This year he began to show a marked preference for the company of older persons. He delighted in talking over things cultural, educational, social, economic, political, and religious with older minds, and his depth of reasoning and keenness of observation so charmed his adult associates that they were always more than willing to visit with him. Until he became responsible for the support of the home, his parents were constantly seeking to influence him to associate with those of his own age, or more nearly his age, rather than with older and better-informed individuals for whom he evinced such a preference. (1369.3) 124:2.7 Late this year he had a fishing experience of two months with his uncle on the Sea of Galilee, and he was very successful. Before attaining manhood, he had become an expert fisherman. (1369.4) 124:2.8 His physical development continued; he was an advanced and privileged pupil at school; he got along fairly well at home with his younger brothers and sisters, having the advantage of being three and one-half years older than the oldest of the other children. He was well thought of in Nazareth except by the parents of some of the duller children, who often spoke of Jesus as being too pert, as lacking in proper humility and youthful reserve. He manifested a growing tendency to direct the play activities of his youthful associates into more serious and thoughtful channels. He was a born teacher and simply could not refrain from so functioning, even when supposedly engaged in play. (1369.5) 124:2.9 Joseph early began to instruct Jesus in the diverse means of gaining a livelihood, explaining the advantages of agriculture over industry and trade. Galilee was a more beautiful and prosperous district than Judea, and it cost only about one fourth as much to live there as in Jerusalem and Judea. It was a province of agricultural villages and thriving industrial cities, containing more than two hundred towns of over five thousand population and thirty of over fifteen thousand. (1369.6) 124:2.10 When on his first trip with his father to observe the fishing industry on the lake of Galilee, Jesus had just about made up his mind to become a fisherman; but close association with his father’s vocation later on influenced him to become a carpenter, while still later a combination of influences led him to the final choice of becoming a religious teacher of a new order. 3. The Eleventh Year (A.D. 5) (1369.7) 124:3.1 Throughout this year the lad continued to make trips away from home with his father, but he also frequently visited his uncle’s farm and occasionally went over to Magdala to engage in fishing with the uncle who made his headquarters near that city. (1369.8) 124:3.2 Joseph and Mary were often tempted to show some special favoritism for Jesus or otherwise to betray their knowledge that he was a child of promise, a son of destiny. But both of his parents were extraordinarily wise and sagacious in all these matters. The few times they did in any manner exhibit any preference for him, even in the slightest degree, the lad was quick to refuse all such special consideration. (1370.1) 124:3.3 Jesus spent considerable time at the caravan supply shop, and by conversing with the travelers from all parts of the world, he acquired a store of information about international affairs that was amazing, considering his age. This was the last year in which he enjoyed much free play and youthful joyousness. From this time on difficulties and responsibilities rapidly multiplied in the life of this youth. (1370.2) 124:3.4 On Wednesday evening, June 24, A.D. 5, Jude was born. Complications attended the birth of this, the seventh child. Mary was so very ill for several weeks that Joseph remained at home. Jesus was very much occupied with errands for his father and with many duties occasioned by his mother’s serious illness. Never again did this youth find it possible to return to the childlike attitude of his earlier years. From the time of his mother’s illness — just before he was eleven years old — he was compelled to assume the responsibilities of the first-born son and to do all this one or two full years before these burdens should normally have fallen on his shoulders. (1370.3) 124:3.5 The chazan spent one evening each week with Jesus, helping him to master the Hebrew scriptures. He was greatly interested in the progress of his promising pupil; therefore was he willing to assist him in many ways. This Jewish pedagogue exerted a great influence upon this growing mind, but he was never able to comprehend why Jesus was so indifferent to all his suggestions regarding the prospects of going to Jerusalem to continue his education under the learned rabbis. (1370.4) 124:3.6 About the middle of May the lad accompanied his father on a business trip to Scythopolis, the chief Greek city of the Decapolis, the ancient Hebrew city of Beth-shean. On the way Joseph recounted much of the olden history of King Saul, the Philistines, and the subsequent events of Israel’s turbulent history. Jesus was tremendously impressed with the clean appearance and well-ordered arrangement of this so-called heathen city. He marveled at the open-air theater and admired the beautiful marble temple dedicated to the worship of the “heathen” gods. Joseph was much perturbed by the lad’s enthusiasm and sought to counteract these favorable impressions by extolling the beauty and grandeur of the Jewish temple at Jerusalem. Jesus had often gazed curiously upon this magnificent Greek city from the hill of Nazareth and had many times inquired about its extensive public works and ornate buildings, but his father had always sought to avoid answering these questions. Now they were face to face with the beauties of this gentile city, and Joseph could not gracefully ignore Jesus’ inquiries. (1370.5) 124:3.7 It so happened that just at this time the annual competitive games and public demonstrations of physical prowess between the Greek cities of the Decapolis were in progress at the Scythopolis amphitheater, and Jesus was insistent that his father take him to see the games, and he was so insistent that Joseph hesitated to deny him. The boy was thrilled with the games and entered most heartily into the spirit of the demonstrations of physical development and athletic skill. Joseph was inexpressibly shocked to observe his son’s enthusiasm as he beheld these exhibitions of “heathen” vaingloriousness. After the games were finished, Joseph received the surprise of his life when he heard Jesus express his approval of them and suggest that it would be good for the young men of Nazareth if they could be thus benefited by wholesome outdoor physical activities. Joseph talked earnestly and long with Jesus concerning the evil nature of such practices, but he well knew that the lad was unconvinced. (1371.1) 124:3.8 The only time Jesus ever saw his father angry with him was that night in their room at the inn when, in the course of their discussions, the boy so far forgot the trends of Jewish thought as to suggest that they go back home and work for the building of an amphitheater at Nazareth. When Joseph heard his first-born son express such un-Jewish sentiments, he forgot his usual calm demeanor and, seizing Jesus by the shoulder, angrily exclaimed, “My son, never again let me hear you give utterance to such an evil thought as long as you live.” Jesus was startled by his father’s display of emotion; he had never before been made to feel the personal sting of his father’s indignation and was astonished and shocked beyond expression. He only replied, “Very well, my father, it shall be so.” And never again did the boy even in the slightest manner allude to the games and other athletic activities of the Greeks as long as his father lived. (1371.2) 124:3.9 Later on, Jesus saw the Greek amphitheater at Jerusalem and learned how hateful such things were from the Jewish point of view. Nevertheless, throughout his life he endeavored to introduce the idea of wholesome recreation into his personal plans and, as far as Jewish practice would permit, into the later program of regular activities for his twelve apostles. (1371.3) 124:3.10 At the end of this eleventh year Jesus was a vigorous, well-developed, moderately humorous, and fairly lighthearted youth, but from this year on he was more and more given to peculiar seasons of profound meditation and serious contemplation. He was much given to thinking about how he was to carry out his obligations to his family and at the same time be obedient to the call of his mission to the world; already he had conceived that his ministry was not to be limited to the betterment of the Jewish people. 4. The Twelfth Year (A.D. 6) (1371.4) 124:4.1 This was an eventful year in Jesus’ life. He continued to make progress at school and was indefatigable in his study of nature, while increasingly he prosecuted his study of the methods whereby men make a living. He began doing regular work in the home carpenter shop and was permitted to manage his own earnings, a very unusual arrangement to obtain in a Jewish family. This year he also learned the wisdom of keeping such matters a secret in the family. He was becoming conscious of the way in which he had caused trouble in the village, and henceforth he became increasingly discreet in concealing everything which might cause him to be regarded as different from his fellows. (1371.5) 124:4.2 Throughout this year he experienced many seasons of uncertainty, if not actual doubt, regarding the nature of his mission. His naturally developing human mind did not yet fully grasp the reality of his dual nature. The fact that he had a single personality rendered it difficult for his consciousness to recognize the double origin of those factors which composed the nature associated with that selfsame personality. (1371.6) 124:4.3 From this time on he became more successful in getting along with his brothers and sisters. He was increasingly tactful, always compassionate and considerate of their welfare and happiness, and enjoyed good relations with them up to the beginning of his public ministry. To be more explicit: He got along with James, Miriam, and the two younger (as yet unborn) children, Amos and Ruth, most excellently. He always got along with Martha fairly well. What trouble he had at home largely arose out of friction with Joseph and Jude, particularly the latter. (1372.1) 124:4.4 It was a trying experience for Joseph and Mary to undertake the rearing of this unprecedented combination of divinity and humanity, and they deserve great credit for so faithfully and successfully discharging their parental responsibilities. Increasingly Jesus’ parents realized that there was something superhuman resident within this eldest son, but they never even faintly dreamed that this son of promise was indeed and in truth the actual creator of this local universe of things and beings. Joseph and Mary lived and died without ever learning that their son Jesus really was the Universe Creator incarnate in mortal flesh. (1372.2) 124:4.5 This year Jesus paid more attention than ever to music, and he continued to teach the home school for his brothers and sisters. It was at about this time that the lad became keenly conscious of the difference between the viewpoints of Joseph and Mary regarding the nature of his mission. He pondered much over his parents’ differing opinions, often hearing their discussions when they thought he was sound asleep. More and more he inclined to the view of his father, so that his mother was destined to be hurt by the realization that her son was gradually rejecting her guidance in matters having to do with his life career. And, as the years passed, this breach of understanding widened. Less and less did Mary comprehend the significance of Jesus’ mission, and increasingly was this good mother hurt by the failure of her favorite son to fulfill her fond expectations. (1372.3) 124:4.6 Joseph entertained a growing belief in the spiritual nature of Jesus’ mission. And but for other and more important reasons it does seem unfortunate that he could not have lived to see the fulfillment of his concept of Jesus’ bestowal on earth. (1372.4) 124:4.7 During his last year at school, when he was twelve years old, Jesus remonstrated with his father about the Jewish custom of touching the bit of parchment nailed upon the doorpost each time on going into, or coming out of, the house and then kissing the finger that touched the parchment. As a part of this ritual it was customary to say, “The Lord shall preserve our going out and our coming in, from this time forth and even forevermore.” Joseph and Mary had repeatedly instructed Jesus as to the reasons for not making images or drawing pictures, explaining that such creations might be used for idolatrous purposes. Though Jesus failed fully to grasp their proscriptions against images and pictures, he possessed a high concept of consistency and therefore pointed out to his father the essentially idolatrous nature of this habitual obeisance to the doorpost parchment. And Joseph removed the parchment after Jesus had thus remonstrated with him. (1372.5) 124:4.8 As time passed, Jesus did much to modify their practice of religious forms, such as the family prayers and other customs. And it was possible to do many such things at Nazareth, for its synagogue was under the influence of a liberal school of rabbis, exemplified by the renowned Nazareth teacher, Jose. (1372.6) 124:4.9 Throughout this and the two following years Jesus suffered great mental distress as the result of his constant effort to adjust his personal views of religious practices and social amenities to the established beliefs of his parents. He was distraught by the conflict between the urge to be loyal to his own convictions and the conscientious admonition of dutiful submission to his parents; his supreme conflict was between two great commands which were uppermost in his youthful mind. The one was: “Be loyal to the dictates of your highest convictions of truth and righteousness.” The other was: “Honor your father and mother, for they have given you life and the nurture thereof.” However, he never shirked the responsibility of making the necessary daily adjustments between these realms of loyalty to one’s personal convictions and duty toward one’s family, and he achieved the satisfaction of effecting an increasingly harmonious blending of personal convictions and family obligations into a masterful concept of group solidarity based upon loyalty, fairness, tolerance, and love. 5. His Thirteenth Year (A.D. 7) (1373.1) 124:5.1 In this year the lad of Nazareth passed from boyhood to the beginning of young manhood; his voice began to change, and other features of mind and body gave evidence of the oncoming status of manhood. (1373.2) 124:5.2 On Sunday night, January 9, A.D. 7, his baby brother, Amos, was born. Jude was not yet two years of age, and the baby sister, Ruth, was yet to come; so it may be seen that Jesus had a sizable family of small children left to his watchcare when his father met his accidental death the following year. (1373.3) 124:5.3 It was about the middle of February that Jesus became humanly assured that he was destined to perform a mission on earth for the enlightenment of man and the revelation of God. Momentous decisions, coupled with far-reaching plans, were formulating in the mind of this youth, who was, to outward appearances, an average Jewish lad of Nazareth. The intelligent life of all Nebadon looked on with fascination and amazement as all this began to unfold in the thinking and acting of the now adolescent carpenter’s son. (1373.4) 124:5.4 On the first day of the week, March 20, A.D. 7, Jesus graduated from the course of training in the local school connected with the Nazareth synagogue. This was a great day in the life of any ambitious Jewish family, the day when the first-born son was pronounced a “son of the commandment” and the ransomed first-born of the Lord God of Israel, a “child of the Most High” and servant of the Lord of all the earth. (1373.5) 124:5.5 Friday of the week before, Joseph had come over from Sepphoris, where he was in charge of the work on a new public building, to be present on this glad occasion. Jesus’ teacher confidently believed that his alert and diligent pupil was destined to some outstanding career, some distinguished mission. The elders, notwithstanding all their trouble with Jesus’ nonconformist tendencies, were very proud of the lad and had already begun laying plans which would enable him to go to Jerusalem to continue his education in the renowned Hebrew academies. (1373.6) 124:5.6 As Jesus heard these plans discussed from time to time, he became increasingly sure that he would never go to Jerusalem to study with the rabbis. But he little dreamed of the tragedy, so soon to occur, which would insure the abandonment of all such plans by causing him to assume the responsibility for the support and direction of a large family, presently to consist of five brothers and three sisters as well as his mother and himself. Jesus had a larger and longer experience rearing this family than was accorded to Joseph, his father; and he did measure up to the standard which he subsequently set for himself: to become a wise, patient, understanding, and effective teacher and eldest brother to this family — his family — so suddenly sorrow-stricken and so unexpectedly bereaved. 6. The Journey to Jerusalem (1374.1) 124:6.1 Jesus, having now reached the threshold of young manhood and having been formally graduated from the synagogue schools, was qualified to proceed to Jerusalem with his parents to participate with them in the celebration of his first Passover. The Passover feast of this year fell on Saturday, April 9, A.D. 7. A considerable company (103) made ready to depart from Nazareth early Monday morning, April 4, for Jerusalem. They journeyed south toward Samaria, but on reaching Jezreel, they turned east, going around Mount Gilboa into the Jordan valley in order to avoid passing through Samaria. Joseph and his family would have enjoyed going down through Samaria by way of Jacob’s well and Bethel, but since the Jews disliked to deal with the Samaritans, they decided to go with their neighbors by way of the Jordan valley. (1374.2) 124:6.2 The much-dreaded Archelaus had been deposed, and they had little to fear in taking Jesus to Jerusalem. Twelve years had passed since the first Herod had sought to destroy the babe of Bethlehem, and no one would now think of associating that affair with this obscure lad of Nazareth. (1374.3) 124:6.3 Before reaching the Jezreel junction, and as they journeyed on, very soon, on the left, they passed the ancient village of Shunem, and Jesus heard again about the most beautiful maiden of all Israel who once lived there and also about the wonderful works Elisha performed there. In passing by Jezreel, Jesus’ parents recounted the doings of Ahab and Jezebel and the exploits of Jehu. In passing around Mount Gilboa, they talked much about Saul, who took his life on the slopes of this mountain, King David, and the associations of this historic spot. (1374.4) 124:6.4 As they rounded the base of Gilboa, the pilgrims could see the Greek city of Scythopolis on the right. They gazed upon the marble structures from a distance but went not near the gentile city lest they so defile themselves that they could not participate in the forthcoming solemn and sacred ceremonies of the Passover at Jerusalem. Mary could not understand why neither Joseph nor Jesus would speak of Scythopolis. She did not know about their controversy of the previous year as they had never revealed this episode to her. (1374.5) 124:6.5 The road now led immediately down into the tropical Jordan valley, and soon Jesus was to have exposed to his wondering gaze the crooked and ever-winding Jordan with its glistening and rippling waters as it flowed down toward the Dead Sea. They laid aside their outer garments as they journeyed south in this tropical valley, enjoying the luxurious fields of grain and the beautiful oleanders laden with their pink blossoms, while massive snow-capped Mount Hermon stood far to the north, in majesty looking down on the historic valley. A little over three hours’ travel from opposite Scythopolis they came upon a bubbling spring, and here they camped for the night, out under the starlit heavens. (1374.6) 124:6.6 On their second day’s journey they passed by where the Jabbok, from the east, flows into the Jordan, and looking east up this river valley, they recounted the days of Gideon, when the Midianites poured into this region to overrun the land. Toward the end of the second day’s journey they camped near the base of the highest mountain overlooking the Jordan valley, Mount Sartaba, whose summit was occupied by the Alexandrian fortress where Herod had imprisoned one of his wives and buried his two strangled sons. (1375.1) 124:6.7 The third day they passed by two villages which had been recently built by Herod and noted their superior architecture and their beautiful palm gardens. By nightfall they reached Jericho, where they remained until the morrow. That evening Joseph, Mary, and Jesus walked a mile and a half to the site of the ancient Jericho, where Joshua, for whom Jesus was named, had performed his renowned exploits, according to Jewish tradition.
