"...When we have decided to accept, let us accept with cheerfulness, showing pleasure, and letting the giver see it, so that he or she may at once receive some return for their goodness..."This week, I am reading a quote from On Benefits by Seneca the Younger, published in 59 AD.Reflection Question:No matter the donor or the donor's motivation, how are you and I receiving gifts? What is the attitude of our hearts?Reflection on Quote:When we look back over the last few months, what has been our attitude in accepting gifts? Seneca describes a number of attitudes that can accompany the receiving of a gift from cheerfulness to offense to slavish humility. Beyond the attitudes he describes, I would add one more. Busyness.  When we do not add enough margin to our days, especially during busy fundraising seasons, we can neglect saying thank you and thus give the appearance that the donations are not needed.  Or, we can instead take the time and aim to accept gifts with cheerfulness. This work has entered the public domain. What do you think? To explore fundraising coaching deeper and to schedule an exploratory session, visit ServingNonprofits.com.Music credit: Woeisuhmebop

Renewing Your Joy in Generosity

Giving is supposed to be a source of great joy for God's people. But sometimes, we act like it's just another pain in our wallet.Christians are supposed to be generous, but maybe you're having trouble getting excited about the idea. Today, we'll point you back to the radical joy of godly generosity.Has Your Giving Become Automatic?Let's start with an honest confession—has your Sunday donation become a routine, more about the habit than the heart? Or maybe you've been cutting back on giving due to financial challenges, and guilt is starting to creep in. Perhaps you and your spouse are facing tension over financial decisions, making discussions about giving stressful and uncomfortable. If your generosity feels stale or joyless, it's time to hit reset. A renewed perspective on giving can not only restore your joy but also realign your heart with God's purposes.Christian Generosity Is DifferentUnlike the world's view of generosity, where recognition, self-esteem, or even a building with our name on it might be the end goal, Christian generosity is rooted in serving a different Master. It's not about impressing others; it's about imitating Christ.Ephesians 5:1 reminds us: “…be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”Jesus' love for us led him to give everything on the cross, and we follow his example when we give radically, sacrificially, and joyfully.Sometimes, the action of giving must come before the feeling. Even when joy is absent, continue to give in faith. The joy will come because generosity pleases God, and He is faithful to guide your heart as you seek Him in this area.Cultivating a Biblical Attitude About GivingWhat does biblical giving look like? It's more than just putting money in the offering plate. Scripture teaches that our giving should be secret, open-handed, cheerful, loving, and sacrificial.1. Secret, Not ShowyJesus calls us to give in secret so that the glory goes to God, not ourselves. In Matthew 6, He warns us to “Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them…But when you give to the needy, do not let your right hand know what your left is doing.”2. Open-Handed, Not Stingy2 Corinthians 9:6-7 encourages us:“Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.”What we have isn't ours—it's God's. Knowing that He is our provider allows us to give freely, whether it's our time, talents, or treasure.3. Cheerful, Not ReluctantGod loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7). Cheerfulness in giving may not come naturally, but God can transform your heart. Pray for Him to help you find joy in generosity because this is His desire for you.4. From Love, Not ObligationGiving that pleases God flows from love—love for Him and love for others. It's not something we manufacture; it's the Holy Spirit working in us, cultivating a heart of love and compassion.5. Sacrificial, Not ConvenientSacrificial giving stretches us to become more like Christ. 2 Corinthians 8:9 reminds us: “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.”Giving sacrificially is an act of trust, believing that God will meet our needs while we meet the needs of others.Giving That Glorifies GodTo sum up, giving that honors God will be secret, open-handed, cheerful, loving, and sacrificial. As you embrace these attitudes, you'll find spiritual growth and joy because ultimately, it's all about God receiving the glory. John 3:21 says:“Whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.”As followers of Christ, we desire to be more like Him in every way, including how we give. But sometimes, we might find ourselves giving out of guilt, reluctance, or a desire to impress others. If that's where you are today, ask Jesus to transform your heart. Pray for the Holy Spirit's guidance as you practice Christian generosity, knowing that God will not only provide for your needs but also bless others through you.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I have $30,000 I'd like to invest, but I need to figure out where to put it. Where should I invest the money? My brother and sister have a trust with three houses in it. My sister has since died, but my brother is still alive, and the trust has money in it already. He is thinking about selling one of the houses. Does the money have to go to the trust, or can he keep it?I'm a retired widow, and when my husband was living, we had just gotten another car. Now that I don't have his income, I am drawing some widow benefits from him. I keep getting mail to refinance at a cheaper rate because I'm trying to build my credit. In this teaching, we're reminded of the profound connection between generosity and spiritual growth. Drawing from 2 Corinthians 9:6-11, we explore the concept of 'sowing and reaping' in our spiritual lives. Just as a farmer's harvest depends on how generously they sow, our spiritual abundance is tied to how freely we give. The speaker challenges us to view our resources - time, talents, and finances - as seeds to be planted, not possessions to be hoarded. We're encouraged to give cheerfully, not out of obligation, but from a heart transformed by God's love. This generosity isn't about the size of the gift, but the attitude behind it. As we align our hearts with God's generous nature, we experience joy and spiritual growth, creating ripples of impact that extend into eternity. Week #30- Philippians 4:4 - Ep. 146 “Rejoice in the Lord always, Again I will say, Rejoice!” Summary In this conversation, John Grdina and Daniel Galasso discuss the importance of joy and celebration in the Christian life. They emphasize the need to be joyful and to rejoice in the Lord always. They highlight that joy is a key theme throughout the Bible and that it is the serious business of heaven. They also discuss the connection between joy, hope, and worship, and encourage listeners to focus on the promises of God and surround themselves with joyful people. They address the issue of bitterness and the importance of celebrating the joy and success of others. They conclude by emphasizing the contagious nature of cheerfulness and the importance of demonstrating joy in the family. Takeaways Joy is a central theme in the Bible and is the serious business of heaven. To experience joy, it is important to focus on the promises of God, surround yourself with joyful people, and worship God. Bitterness can hinder joy, so it is important to celebrate the joy and success of others. Cheerfulness is contagious, and it is important to demonstrate joy in the family. Chapters 00:00 Introduction and Importance of Joy 02:38 The Connection Between Joy, Hope, and Worship 05:35 Finding Hope and Cultivating Joy 07:31 The Contagious Nature of Cheerfulness 10:42 The Transformation Process and Authentic Celebration 13:36 Being Authentic in Our Praise and Celebration 15:42 The Impact of Joyful Living on Families and Communities 18:27 Prayer for Joy and Authenticity in Parenting 19:03 Thanks for watching  Why are we discussing this book? I'm blessed and honored to have you with us on this journey, and I know it will impact people. So this book, you'll see I'll have it on the cover of each episode, was found at my grandparents' house after my grandmother died, and my grandfather, it was his, passed away almost five years ago. And the reason why it was on my heart to do this was instead of going by myself, it would be the best How is the best way for fathers or grandfathers to read through Scripture, 52 specific verses, and then how it can be used in their life? So what Daniel and I are going to do is we're going to use the SOAP method: The term "SOAP method" is often associated with a structured approach to studying and reflecting on scripture. The SOAP method is an acronym that stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. It provides a systematic way to engage with and apply the teachings found in the Bible. Here's a brief overview of each step: 1. **Scripture:**    - Choose a passage or verse from the Bible to focus on. Read and meditate on the selected scripture. 2. **Observation:**    - Reflect on the passage and observe details such as keywords, themes, and any significant context. Consider the historical and cultural context of the passage. 3. **Application:**    - Apply the teachings of the scripture to your own life. Consider how the passage can impact your beliefs, attitudes, and actions. Think about practical steps you can take based on the insights gained from the scripture. 4. **Prayer:**    - Conclude your reflection with a prayer. Communicate with God about what you've learned, express gratitude, seek guidance, or ask for strength to apply the lessons from the scripture. Lent is a 40 day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday. It's a period of preparation to celebrate the Lord's Resurrection at Easter. The Easter Vigil is the "Mother of All Vigils" and Easter Sunday is the greatest of all Sundays. The season of Easter is the most important of all liturgical times, which Catholics celebrate as the Lord's resurrection from the dead, culminating in his Ascension to the Father and sending of the Holy Spirit upon the Church. The octave of Easter comprises the eight days which stretch from the first to the second Sunday. It is a way of prolonging the joy of the initial day. There are 50 days of Easter from the first Sunday to Pentecost. It is characterized, above all, by the joy of glorified life and the victory over death expressed most fully in the great resounding cry of the Christian:  Alleluia! All faith flows from faith in the resurrection: "If Christ has not been raised, then empty is our preaching; empty, too, is your faith." So, in face, in looks, in reciprocal remarks and in a special way towards strangers, all must radiate holy cheerfulness and joy. It must be remembered that, if this characteristic is lacking, they will lead few people to God because they will not encourage many to feel enthusiastic about following Our Lord Jesus Christ. On the other hand, their example of cheerfulness and joy will help people to understand that the following of Our Lord Jesus Christ is the basis of a life of true happiness." ~ St. Vincent PallottiView Advent resources provided by the Catholic Apostolate Center. The season of Advent is the Church's liturgical season of preparation for Christmas. It is often referred to as “the Little Lent”. Advent begins on the Sunday closest to the feast of St. Andrew, November 30th, and continues for four weeks and concludes with midnight Mass on Christmas. Families prepare for Christmas in advent in a variety of ways, such as setting up and Advent wreath on the dining room table or using a Jesse tree. Have you ever asked someone how they were doing and had them hinge their response on how the day goes? On the other hand, have you ever noticed how contagious someone's cheerfulness can be? When you're around someone who is genuinely happy and upbeat, it's hard not to feel the same way. But the opposite is also true - negativity and grumpiness can bring down the mood of those around us.Studies have shown that cheerfulness has numerous scientific benefits for employees in the workplace. Research suggests that a positive and cheerful outlook can lead to higher levels of job satisfaction, increased productivity, and better overall health. When employees are happy and cheerful, they tend to have higher levels of engagement, creativity, and problem-solving abilities. Cheerful employees are also more likely to have positive relationships with their colleagues, which can improve team dynamics and collaboration. Additionally, cheerful employees tend to have better physical health, including reduced risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, and better sleep quality. All of these benefits can contribute to a more positive and productive workplace culture.Cheerfulness is not an innate and unattainable characteristic. It is a skill you can choose to cultivate. Start by focusing on the good things in your life, no matter how small. Take time to appreciate the beauty around you, whether it's a sunny day or a blooming flower. Practice gratitude by keeping a daily journal or taking a moment each day to reflect on what you're thankful for.Cultivate a positive mindset. Instead of dwelling on problems or negative experiences, focus on finding solutions and learning from challenges. Practice positive self-talk by reminding yourself of your strengths and accomplishments.Make an effort to spread cheer to others. Smile and make eye contact with people you encounter throughout your day. Offer compliments and words of encouragement. And remember, even small acts of kindness can have a big impact, whether at home or at work.So choose to be cheerful today and see how it can transform your mood and the mood of those around you.More Links and Resources Pick up your Mindful in 5 Book and Journal from Amazon Join the Discussion on LinkedIn Join the Mindful Ninjas: Subscribe to the newsletter Website: https://www.spiwejefferson.com/ Get a Custom Signed Book and Journal Facebook Instagram YouTube Contact Us: info@spiwejefferson.com Rate Us: Goodreads and Amazon...

The Ladder of Divine Ascent - Chapter XII: On Lying

Tonight we read Step number 12 on Lying. Surprisingly this has always been a challenging step to read and to read as a group. Immediately our minds begin to swirl with the costs of loving the Truth and understanding that Truth is a person. Our starting point in such discussions is often examples that are extreme; things or circumstances that people might face within this life where lying might be justified. St. John addresses this and much more within the step. However, one has to be willing to suspend judgment and allow St. John to guide us along a path that deepens our sensitivity in regards to the Truth as a whole. Our starting point must be Christ. We must begin to understand that lying is a sin against charity, and to lie when making a vow or an oath is a denial of God himself. St. John understands very well that the Evil One can use something as innocent and enjoyable as humor to justify and to legitimize lying.  Yet, John tells us that there are no small lies and once spoken they have an effect upon ourselves and others. They diminish the spirit of mourning; that is, compunction within the human heart. In doing so they distract us from the remembrance of God and the things of God. We must remember that God has given us a conscience, a means of knowing the truth with Him. This is what we must form through the gospel and through our participation in the life of Christ. We must also remember that the Evil One is the Father of Lies and will use a lie under the pretext of protecting others. In the face of this, St. John tells us, “when we are completely cleansed of lying, then we can resort to it, but only with fear and as occasion demands.” Only when the heart has been completely purified, where there is no love of falsehood and where there is the presence of great discernment, can such a decision be made. To love truth, St. John tells us, is the root of every good because it is to love Christ. --- Text of chat during the group: 00:25:04 Anthony Rago: I've also been thinking that our bodies and societies are parables of truth; and we can be lying by engaging in bad lifestyles.   00:37:35 Anthony Rago: I can imagine a confessor becoming very exasperated if we treat all this as confessable sins; and it would be very wearing on all of us.   00:39:28 David Swiderski: Like many other things isn't discernment take a place here. Is this so people will think I am funny (pride), will this hurt someone, will it erode trust (the cost of lies) or lead to a habit?   00:39:39 Anthony Rago: That makes sense, thanks   00:40:57 Cindy Moran: Corrie ten Boom  lied to the Nazis when they asked if jews were in the house. This is ok?   00:44:09 Ren Witter: I feel like this is a really hard one. Intellectually, I actually feel like it is easy to understand. Emotionally, it kind of feels like one of those instances where being Christian can feel like a “kill-joy” to put it in a light way. Maybe the immense anxiety I feel in response to this is coming from the fear that being a Christian means no joy or every-day happiness. Its weird because I know that that isn't true, but sometimes it can be hard to reconcile the lived experience of Christianity with the things the Fathers write.   00:46:34 Debra: Replying to "Corrie ten Boom  lie..."   I've read a priest's response to this, is Yes, it's ok; because the Nazis didn't have a right to what's going on in their home That we have dignity, and a right to privacy   I'm interested to hear what Fr Abernethy says
