From its earliest recorded history, India was a place of remarkable and varied religious activity, ranging from elaborate sacrificial rituals and rigorous regimes of personal austerity to psycho-spiritual experimentation and utopian visions. In Religions of Early India: A Cultural History (Princeton UP, 2024), Richard Davis offers a history of India's myriad religious cultures that spans two thousand years, from 1300 BCE to 700 CE. Throughout, he emphasizes encounter, interaction, debate, critique, and borrowing among religious communities within a shared, changing social and political reality. The voices and visions of early India's religions, Davis shows us, are fascinating in their multiplicity. Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode, I explore how architectural thinking enhances strategic decision-making with Adam Griff. Our conversation reveals how his architectural background shapes his approach to helping higher education institutions navigate complex decisions and create flexible space solutions. We dig into the challenges of designing spaces that can adapt to unknown futures and discuss how universities can better integrate with their communities. I particularly love how Adam frames flexibility in building design as creating platforms for future adaptations rather than just multi-purpose spaces. We also explore the tension between academic and organizational decision-making and how to create and decide while delivering innovation in higher education. Questions This Episode Helps You Answer How does thinking like an architect help organizations make better strategic decisions? What makes flexibility essential in both physical spaces and organizational processes, and how can we intentionally design for it from the beginning? What elements create environments where good decisions emerge, and how can we support better decision-making outcomes? How do we determine whether physical space is the best solution for achieving our organizational goals, and what questions should we ask before investing in space? How can we think about buildings as adaptable platforms that support evolving human needs rather than fixed structures with predetermined uses? How might universities and colleges create meaningful connections between campus development and community growth that benefit both? What strategies help organizations balance the need for scholarly rigor with efficient administrative decision-making, and how can these different approaches work together effectively? Episode Highlights [00:00] Introduction and background on Adam Griff [01:38] How architectural thinking shapes strategic problem-solving [04:17] Managing diverse stakeholders in higher education contexts [05:35] Understanding people's needs versus asking for solutions [07:31] Orchestrating organizational decision-making [09:13] The importance of decision-making culture in institutions [11:20] Building trust and managing participation in decisions [14:15] Creating shared understanding of evidence and good decisions [17:04] Balancing organizational conditions with decision quality [19:38] Making decisions with incomplete information [21:36] Academic versus administrative approaches to decisions [24:40] Rethinking flexibility in organizational strategy [25:25] Space as a medium for service delivery [26:51] Designing buildings as platforms for adaptation [29:14] Lifecycle costs and sustainable building design [30:48] Integration of campus and community development [33:31] Responding to demographic changes in higher education [35:33] Finding what is "uniquely possible" for institutions [39:12] Moving from master planning to scenario-based "playbooks" [41:09] Closing thoughts and connecting with Adam Questions to Help You Go Deeper Learning How does architectural thinking about constraints and systems change your approach to organizational challenges?
Vance. This episode explores Atom Egoyan's 1997 film, The Sweet Hereafter, which describes the impact of a tragic school bus accident that caused the death of 14 children on a small Canadian town. The film is based on Russell Banks' 1991 novel of the same name (which in turn was based on a real-life bus crash in Texas). The film centers on personal injury lawyer Mitchell Stephens (Ian Holm), who travels to the town after the accident in an attempt to persuade the parents of the children to bring a negligence lawsuit. The controversy generated by the lawsuit ripples through the community and is explored through several characters in the town, including Nicole (Sarah Polley), a teenage girl who is left paralyzed from the waist down by the accident; Dolores Driscoll (Gabrielle Rose), the bus driver on the fateful, day; and various parents who have sharply conflicting views on the lawsuit. The Sweet Hereafter, however, is much more than a story about tort litigation; it explores larger philosophical questions around justice, community norms, and the role of law in addressing life's most painful tragedies. I am joined by Seán Patrick Donlan, a Professor of Law at Thompson Rivers University in British Columbia, Canada.Timestamps:0:00 Introduction3:18 Recruiting plaintiffs for a class action lawsuit9:58 Judith Shklar's distinction between misfortune and injustice14:20 Law and defense of community21:45 The loss of children28:52 The deposition that unravels the case39:13 Assigning blame and scapegoating47:02 More on Atom Egoyan 49:13 The role of the Pied PiperFurther reading:Banks, Russell, The Sweet Hereafter (1991)Fried, Margaret J. & Frolik, Lawrence A. “The Limits of Law: Litigation, Lawyers, and the Search for Justice in Russell Banks' ‘The Sweet Hereafter,'” 7 Cardozo Stud. Pourquoi ? I recently had the chance to sit down with Roger Miller, one of the co-owners of Revolution Games, to discuss the world of wargame publishing and game design. Our conversation took us through his journey from playing his first wargame in 1975 to becoming a publisher, as well as the development of the innovative Blind Swords series and the upcoming game, Shiloh. We also touched on the challenges of producing and marketing games in today's market, and the importance of being kind when responding to game submissions. Finally, we delve into Revolution Games' upcoming World War I game and the unique features that set it apart from past dogfight games. With its beautiful counters and two-leveled display, this game promises to be an immersive and exciting experience for players. So join us for this episode as we explore the captivating world of wargaming with Roger Miller and discuss the future of this engaging hobby. In addition to my chat with Roger, hear the latest news from publishers, and then I unpack the origin of Storm Over Arnhem, the original area impulse game.Plus random news and chatter as usual.***Apparently I had the detail of the pay-for-review scandal wrong. It wasn't a video game, but a boardgame kickstarter. Mea Culpa.********And Roger's partner in Revolution Games is Richard Handewith. I mixed him up with another Richard H and I'm very embarrassed as I've met Richard a few times and he's a great guy. Mea maximum culpa.*****Boardgame Dojo link:https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamepodcastepisode/485142/psychology-sponsored-content
Fuentes: Libros y artículos Coronel (R) Robert C. Carroll (2009). Prior to the interview, Mark reminds listeners about sending THEIR reflections for forthcoming Episode 300, provides a personal update and shares a word about this episode's sponsor. You can learn more about how you can get your audiobooks distributed to retailers and library systems around the world at starkreflections.ca/Findaway. In their conversation, Mark and Richard talk about: Richard's epic fantasy writing, which is told in trilogy batches, all within the same universe How the song "Run to the Hills" from Iron Maiden in the early 1980s put the story that became his first trilogy into his head, but also how Richard's serious start in writing didn't start until 2017 How his first novel was called "The River Styx" for the first 33 years that he kept it kicking around in his head Pitching his first novel to an agent, and then realizing this was something he could do for himself Publishing 14 books in the "Soul Forge" universe since 2018 A bit of a background on the reasoning behind retiring from Waterloo Police Service, and how that allowed him to be able to write Richard's analogy of being the race car driver with a fantastic pit crew (his wife, family, and the professionals he works with) that helps him look good Why Richard invests so much into in person and print selling Meeting David M. Kelly at GraphicCon in Sudbury, ON and how Richard learned a lot from David in that type of environment How 2020 was supposed to be their "breakthrough" year The value of what happens when a person browsing at Richard's table realizing they're actually talking to an author The epic-fantasy themed costumes that Richard will sometimes wear when doing an event in person The trilogy discount promotional pricing that Richard can offer Ordering print copies from a local printer (in Toronto) rather than having them shipped from Amazon The trailer Richard has for doing in person events with the book covers on it Richard's advice on not being afraid to engage with people, and don't be shy about sharing the fact that you are the author How, even with a sign that has your photo on them and a "meet the author today" people still don't "get it" that the author is right there The importance of trying different ways and approaches to see what works best for you Making someone's day by offering a woman who was having a bad day the opportunity to name a dragon in one of his books How Richard decides which in person book events are worth it and which ones aren't Advice Richard would give to his younger 1982 self And more... After the interview, Mark reflects on the importance of making it clear, despite when things seem like they're already overtly obvious, as well as how we all tend to focus on our "one star" elements rather than our "five star" ones. This week's guest is Richard H Stephens, author of several fantasy novels! Thanks for listening!
In today's episode, we welcome Professor Steve Maddern, Director of Public Health, Swindon Borough Council. The idea for this episode was for Steve to share how he rose to be Director of Public Health to inspire communications and marketing professionals to believe no senior management level is too high. Our main question was “Imagine you are doing your TED Talk on Leadership – what one message would you share with someone who is a couple of steps behind you.”His advice is well worth a listen and includes: saying yes to opportunitiesinformal and formal learning considering the impact of work decisions on your whole life not just your work life. But ultimately whatever your dream turning up as your best self and keeping abreast of the knowledge you need to do to be the best at your job.But our conversations gave us so much more; as Steve discusses how public health and marketing and comms have become much closer bedfellows.Public Health, like marketing, is often referred to as an art and a science. We discuss how there is so much growing synergy between the disciplines and that ultimately they need to work in sync to make a difference and be effective. Steve talks about his experience delivering a community-based activity campaign called the Big Pledge across Wiltshire. A legacy of the Olympics it used micro commitment to reset social norms. Steve highlights that the first year wasn't very successful but use of data and perseverance resulted in it running for many years to become a phenomenal campaign that created community spirit whilst helping people to begin and keep activeSteve highlights the importance of attitudes when delivering communications and marketing – the willingness to test, review, refresh and adapt where needed. The safe space to explore what is working and what isn't. The confidence and leadership to have honest conversations around measuring and evaluation. After all how realistic is it to think you can get it perfect every time? (Editor's note: Expectations run perfect campaigns can cause real stress for colleagues!)Steve's current COVID campaign is called It's Up to all of Us. It is a community-based campaign - a call to action to protect each other and consider the impact of their actions directly or indirectly. This work highlighted the importance of the application of insight and a deep understanding the audience. Swindon has 40 different languages, reaching everyone to help keep them safe was fundamental. Steve says“Behavioural science is more important than ever and I think this has shown the evolving and advancement of public health, it isn't just a leaflet or a poster telling you what to do it's about actually taking the insights from the communities and the people you want to influence and using that along with the data and the science to develop the campaign. Q: What makes you – your best self?“Knowing I can make a difference.” "I am in awe of the team I have around me” Q: What book would you recommendNudge. The goal is to make better lifestyle choices the easy choice. It highlights the role of policy but also translates how behavioural science can be used as a local level. Why are we so vulnerable to misinformation? How do we make better choices?Do we react to the immediacy of information or the quality of that information?Turns out, immediacy carries the day. Worse yet, if that misinformation confirms our previously held biases or beliefs, we are even more susceptible to its influence. It all has to do with Nudge Theory; a breakthrough in Behavioral Economics that was based on the pioneering research of two Israeli psychologists: Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky in the 1970's that examined why people make the choices that they do.Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein developed the human bahevior patterns discovered by Kahneman and Tversky and formed them into a cohesive theory that attempts to explain human decision making in a more complete way than other theories of choice-making.In 2017, Richard Thaler won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for Nudge Theory.Let's look at how we can use the best of what Nudge Theory has to offer to make sure we protect ourselves from misinformation and make the decisions that enhance the quality of our lives.Where to learn more:Thaler, Richard H. 2018.
