In the realm of youth development, few names have resonated as strongly as the Boy Scouts of America. However, a significant transformation has seen the emergence of Scouting America, a rebrand designed to embody inclusivity. At the heart of this evolution is Jon Elliott, the District Executive for the Shenandoah Area Council, whose insights provide a profound understanding of the shift and its impact on communities. This rebrand, as Jon explains, officially adopted in May 2024, endeavors to shed the gender-specific connotations of its former title. The term ‘Boy Scouts' is now history, paving the way for an inclusive future that welcomes all—boys, girls, and families alike. 'It's trying to be a little more inclusive and let everybody know that we're not just for boys anymore,' says Jon. Jon highlights that girls have been part of certain programs since the 1960s, but now the Cub Scouts and traditional scout troops openly welcome them. Scouting America is more than just a name change; it's a commitment to fostering an environment where both boys and girls can thrive. 'Both have good programs... we just do things a little differently,' he notes. Scouting America's structure offers age-appropriate activities aimed at holistic development. The Cub Scout program targets children from kindergarten through fifth grade, emphasizing family-oriented activities. As children grow older, they transition into Scouts BSA for those from the sixth grade until their 18th birthday, with separate troops for boys and girls or even co-ed troops in some pilots. For the more adventurous, Venturing Crews have been co-ed since the 1970s, catering to 14 to 21-year-olds with high-adventure programs. There are also Explorer Posts that focus on specific career fields, partnering with local emergency services to provide hands-on experience in professions like firefighting and law enforcement. Becoming an Eagle Scout is a journey of dedication and leadership. Jon emphasizes the rigorous process, which includes earning 21 merit badges—11 of which are mandatory—and completing a community service project that highlights leadership skills. 'Eagle Scouts are the top of the top,' Jon asserts, noting the lifetime recognition the rank confers. The Shenandoah Area Council, split into districts such as Shawnee and Shenrapawa, covers a vast region. Jon's role encompasses six counties and the city of Winchester, with growing participation reflected in the establishment of new units across Virginia. 'Scouting is coming back to communities,' he celebrates, reflecting on the reestablishment of programs post-COVID-19. Camp Rock Enon in Gore serves as a hub for many scouting activities, from summer camps to high adventure programs. Jon fondly reminisces about personal milestones at the camp and highlights its value in providing a structured environment for scout activities. With options sprawling into Pennsylvania, scouting experiences are diverse and rich with opportunity. Jon invites families to find their fit within the scouting community, emphasizing flexibility in joining times and locations. Whether through the national website BeAScout.org or local meetings, the path to becoming a scout is accessible year-round. The essence of scouting thrives on volunteer support. From store assistance to troop leadership, community members are encouraged to contribute their skills and time. 'We always can use a volunteer for things,' Jon affirms, extending an open invitation to those looking to foster the next generation of leaders. Scouting America stands as a testament to the evolving landscape of youth development, where inclusivity and practical skills converge to build better citizens. As Jon and his team navigate this transformative journey, they remain committed to equipping young people with the tools to make ethical and moral choices. It's more than a rebrand; it's a renewed commitment to community and character. Just over the words, Boy Scouts of America or Scouts BSA on the right pocket is a space reserved for the interpreter strip. All too often we forget that the Scouting movement is international. It's important that scouts and scouters who are bilingual display what language they are proficient in. This is a way of living up to being courteous and friendly. It also helps keep with the scout oath to help others at all times by being that interpreter that helps them understand what is going on in scouting. Today's technology can subtitle using closed captions on almost any video in any language. Almost every smartphone has an interpreter feature. Google can translate entire websites into a language that the user may be more comfortable reading. The interpreter strip is often forgotten as a good turn in scouting to help others. https://youtu.be/Jdww0lymCq0
September 2nd, 2023, Segment 3 Over 115 years ago an organization began in the UK. Twenty boys between the ages of 11 to 18 participated in this experimental camp. Organizer Robert Baden-Powell then published “Scouting for Boys” which has since sold over 100 million copies. Then in 1910, the organization Boy Scouts of America was formed. Fast forward to 2023 and Scouting now has programs for young people aged 6 to 20 & continues to educate & build adventurers, skilled outdoorspeople, & most importantly citizens & leaders into our future. Mark Turner, CEO of the Mecklenburg County Council, has been a professional part of the Boy Scouts of America for over thirty years & was the recipient of NC's highest award, Long Leaf Pine in 2018. He joins the program & shares the benefits of Scouting. Turner mentions that what Scouting does for our community & families. Character, value, morals, leadership training and friendships that last a lifetime built through an outdoor program are part of what propels the Scouting organization. "Families are hungry for these things, right now", Turner tells Carolina Outdoor host, Bill Bartee. When asked about the recent affects on organizations like church's, fraternal & civic organizations, & others due to the Pandemic & shifting interests of people, Turner says the popularity of being outside tends to benefit BSA. It also celebrates families spending time with youth & being mentors while building a community. Although Scouting has grown, it & other organizations have taken hits- many aren't joining groups as much these days—churches, civic organizations, fraternal organizations are all trying to maintain membership. One of the ways BSA added to membership was expanding females into dens, packs, & troops. Reportedly this has been met with wild success locally with many successfully obtaining the prestigious Eagle Scout award. The longtime CEO of the Mecklenburg County Council speaks on the celebration & success of females in Scouting. He mentions the girl dens within Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA female troops, & the new female Eagle Scouts, that are representing Scouting so well. Turner speaks about one of the most special aspects of the Mecklenburg Scouting programs which is the Belk Scout Camp & the ever popular Camp Grimes. These places are close to Charlotte & enables young people to have a place to pursue badges, activities, & build upon the successes that are offered within Scouts. Listen to his take on technology, teaching how to be a positive influence & citizenship during a time of civil discourse. For more information on local Scouting options and programs head over to the website. This Segment was Sponsored by Mountain Khakis in Charlotte & Charlotte's Fly Shop, Jesse Brown's.

Scouting is deeply tied to STEM while working with America's youth. We need to recognize youth that chooses to fulfill the requirements of STEM within Scouting. The Nova award and the Supernova are based on excellence within a STEM discipline. Scouts that achieve this high award should be recognized and celebrated. This is not new it's just that we now recognize that everything we do in Scouting has a STEM component. Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venture, and Sea Scouts have their own STEM requirements. Scout leaders can easily incorporate the program into existing plans. This video we'll help you understand some of the basics.
There is a debate about who is 3rd in command in youth leadership. Many maintain it's the Troop Scribe while others put forth a good case for other positions. The Troop Scribe is part of the Patrol Leaders Council (PLC) but has no vote in decisions. The Troop Scribe also reports and works with the Advancement Team and the Troop Finance Subcommittee. If both the Senior Patrol Leader (SPL), and the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader (ASPL) are out or unavailable the Troop Scribe is the only youth that is aware of needed information.

Hey, We are tackling the kitchen today! It's one of the most used rooms in the house and it needs some help. It's so easy to just operate in a space out of habit and not realize how inefficient it is because of the mess and disorganization. So let's spend some time in the kitchen figuring out how we need the space to work for us. Then decluttering as we rearrange things to fit our lifestyle. Start opening cabinets and getting rid of the excess stuff. Before you know it, you'll have a kitchen where you can actually find everything you need and easily cook in. We have a fantastic guest today to help us navigate our messy kitchens. In March of 2022 she launched a podcast, Pruning To Prosper, to bring God into the center of her work as a declutter coach. Gina uses the same principles of decluttering, money and meals along with the mindset coaching to help women prune away the practical stuff standing between them and the woman God has called them to be. According to Scouts BSA, the rank of Eagle Scout requires a Scout to earn minimum of 21 merit badges, show leadership skills, and plan an Eagle Project. This needs to be done before the Scout turns 18. For Angelo, the Eagle Project was giving back to a park that had given a lot to him growing up. Angelo cleaned up and stained the pavilion, added a bench, and replaced the teeter-totter boards. Angelo is starting his senior year at DuBois Central Catholic. Angelo and his brother, JD, did this project together.

A discussion of packing lists: what to include on them, and why they're important. Podcast Topics Parker rejoins the podcast and chats with Ken about packing lists. Because while it's nice to think that Scouts might be mature enough to know what to bring along on a trip, and while it might be tempting to test one's Scouts by making them suffer through the consequences of forgetting some key piece of gear, the truth of the matter is that just about everyone — even adults! — can and will benefit from having a list to refer to when the time comes to put together all the gear one will need for an adventure. Scouts BSA has published some excellent, if generalized, warm weather and cool weather packing lists; Ken's own Group has also developed a list that it maintains internally and periodically updates. Important Note: By all means, make use of the above-linked documents...but only use them as templates. Always pack according to your troop's needs, and your individual needs as well. Gary consciously aims to leave whatever he is involved with better, setting a positive example. That invigorates him. His core values are integrity and principled leadership. At times you may be devoted to something that disappoints you. Gary found that in recent years with the Boy Scouts, who he no longer felt were living up to their principles, and he decided to act to make change together with his daughter. Listen to the inspiring achievement on this podcast episode. His pivotal moments in his career and life came from activities beyond his legal work. He didn't start out to be a civil rights activist, but the passion evolved starting in the early 1990s on the Columbia University campus when he saw there was more to life than what his early legal assignments were directed to. He found he was good at building teams to solve problems, and he has built a strong community of activists to call on.For many years, Gary has been active in carrying out projects in the non-profit world as he recognized needs and sees ways to make a meaningful contribution. That juices him. Hear what he's planning next.Gary's takeaway advice is not to be concerned with other's expectations of what you should be doing but rather to run with your passion and bring others to share it. That's his idea of a life worth living.Bio Gary Ireland: Employment Attorney, civil rights activist and so much more!Gary is a relentless advocate for inclusion and non-discrimination. An exciting example: He participated in a multi-year advocacy and media campaign working with his family, the National Organization for Women, and local elected officials resulting in young women successfully becoming full members in the previously all-male Boy Scouts of America. The initiative resulted in over 200,000 new female Scouts and a new name for the premier program: Scouts BSA. Gary helps executives maximize income and benefits when joining or leaving a company, enhancing severance, and, if necessary, asserting legal rights in court. Gary seeks to bring out the best in everyone, whether working with executives, employees, or start-ups and small businesses as outside General Counsel. His litigation experience spans high profile matters to lesser-known matters where Gary works behind the scenes to help executives maximize their outcome. Gary received the NAACP legal prize, “Footprints in the Sands Award”, also the legal award from the Bella Abzug Leadership Institute, and the “Champion for Progress” recognition from the National Organization for Women. We think he sets an excellent example for Legacy-Makers@Work's audience for his intentional pursuit of a purposeful legacy.
