Scouting Stuff You Should Know

How Venturer Scouts from the 23rd Nepean Scout Group kept their heads during the Jasper wildfire evacuation. Podcast Topics Scouter Ken is joined by Cadence James (National Youth Commissioner for Scouts Canada, and a Rover Scout with the 23rd Nepean Scout Group), Molly Prevost (another Rover Scout with the 23rd), and Foster Millett (a Venturer Scout with the 23rd) to discuss their trip to Jasper National Park...which saw them arrive just prior to the massive wildfire that devastated much of the area. It's a story that Scouts Canada has retold in a few places already, highlighting the resilience of the youth and the attitude of preparedness that Scouting equipped them with. All of that comes out in the conversation, as does the value of being able to find the good in a crisis situation. Programming Note: The podcast is going to shift its production schedule a bit for 2025. There will probably be just one full-length episode per month, with shorter news & PSA episodes filling in the other weeks. Shout-Outs Cadence's shout-outs include Lucas Normandeau and Krystal Reid (both with Cascadia Council), Willa Holmes (from Northern Lights Council), and all the Venturers and Scouters who came on the trip. Molly and Foster's shout-outs include all the Scouters who came on the trip: Mike Hubbard, Brian Bezaire, John James, and Devin Morrison. Hi, I'm John VK4JPM, Secretary of the Darling Downs Radio Club. It's Sunday 19th of January and it's already only 22 sleeps away from our meeting on the second Monday of February. Bruce VK4MQ has a passion for Fox Hunting, and he's champing at the bit to show you why and how that happened. Not only is Bruce bringing along some of his home-brew foxes so that you can see what one looks like up close and personal, but he's a big fan of the cheap DIY directional antenna. There's lots more to fox hunting than just a transmitter and a receiver - although those are a big help. It's also helpful to have a bit of technique, both as a hunter or as the fox, and Bruce will let you in on hints, tips, and winning strategies that you can use in either role. This is how Bruce gets to talk about the nuns and the beat-up sedan. Bruce has promised to bring along some raw materials and will build a directional antenna on the spot. Robert Thomson VK4TFN here. REDFEST 2025 will be held on the 12th April 2025 The Theme will be "Fun on HF" We have a new venue. REDFEST 2025 will be held at the Deception Bay North State School in Old Bay Road Deception Bay. We will Raffle a very nice ICOM radio TxRx. Go to redclifferadioclub.org.au for more information. 73's and bye for now from the Redcliffe & Districts Radio Club VK4RC. Hello, I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I've been thinking. In the past week, my part of the world has seen the conclusion of one of the biggest gatherings on the Fraser Coast. Maryborough was the host town for the Scouting Jamboree displayed as AJ25 on the patches and advertising. The last time this event was held in Maryborough, I was lucky enough to be able to participate in the amateur radio station that was on site. Sadly band conditions during the day were not the best and very few scouts were lucky enough to experience ham radio as they circulated around the activities. At night, the Scouters who were amateurs were much more successful and we would catch up with their successes when we returned the following day. I have not heard how the activities went this year but hopefully with band conditions more favourable there was plenty of action to spur enthusiasm in the hearts of the scouts who ventured into the amateur radio station. My participation has been limited to driving past the venue and following items presented in the media except for one activity. I do a weekly shop for the household and in that first week the streets and shops of Maryborough were illuminated by the bright Jamboree shirts of people attending to purchases in town and sight-seeing the historical town. What really came across to me was the courtesy and general good behaviour of the scouts. We are all used to the slightly frenetic pace at which people of this age like to live life and the fact that chasing the moment can overtake consideration for people around them. With these young people there was a unity and alertness which we would associate with people involved in the scouting movement. I have never had so many bodies defer to my travel along supermarket aisles and even apologise if they thought I had been hindered. I am left with the feeling that we amateurs are lucky to have an association with the Scouting movement and where we can we should offer assistance to our local groups. There is the hope that some of those people working to get their badges in various skills which align with amateur radio can take the further step of joining the radio fraternity as a complementary activity. Later this year, there will be the opportunity to participate in the JOTA/JOTI activities but in the meantime the opportunities remain for closer liaison with Scouts, Guides and Joeys at local levels. Like all voluntary bodies, scouting depends on the support of people like you and me. If there is an opportunity take it and if not try and make it. I'm Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that's what I think….how about you?

Youth between the ages of 14 and 17 can also volunteer as Scouters, at least in Scouts Canada. Podcast Topics In their first in-person sit-down session of the year, Scouter Ken and Scouter Colin discuss Youth Scouters. This is an extension of the volunteer apparatus within Scouts Canada that allows minors (between the ages of 14 and 17) to go through the training and interview process that adult volunteers must complete to become Scouters. Youth Scouters count toward ratio requirements as long as at least two adult Scouters are also registered with the section (apologies: Ken said one Scouter in the episode; it should be two). Importantly, however, Youth Scouters do not count on the “youth” side of a section's ratio; they count as Scouters, and so do not have to be interacted with according to the Two-Scouter Rule. Youth Scouters can be a great way for Venturers to give back to their groups, accruing volunteer hours as they do. And for groups who are strapped for volunteers, Youth Scouters might just be what's needed to allow a section to run its program for the year. Shout-Outs A shout-out to Emily who wrote in regarding Episode 88, which concerned orienteering: "Just listened to Episode 88, Orienteering (2019). You mentioned don't get your compass near a big, powerful magnet — guess what? I absent-mindedly put my compass into a zipped breast pocket during a break at land navigation training, RIGHT ON TOP OF MY SMARTPHONE. When I went back out on the course, I was totally baffled: suddenly, I couldn't orient myself. I'd been doing so well!!! I couldn't find the objectives or identify drainages, and I couldn't pass the field exam. Embarrassing! I was mystified. It took a couple of days for it to dawn on me that I had demagnetized my compass by putting it in my pocket lying atop my smartphone. It was completely useless, and pointed in random directions!! Live and learn." The Scout Oath and Law are so important to the Scouting movement that young people should take it seriously. In the American Scout Law, the first two keywords are Trustworthy and Loyal. The first two points of the Scout Law build upon an individual's honor which is part of the Scout Oath. It is impossible to be loyal to someone who is not trustworthy. Scouts and Scouters do what they have committed to. A scout tells the truth, and they are honest. Scouts keep their promises and you can depend on them. The best example of this is being on time. Scouts and Scouters keep their commitments and work hard towards helping others. https://youtu.be/kApnL85XnsE

The trials and pitfalls of being a Jamboree Contingent Lead. Podcast Topics Ken and Colin discuss the upcoming Kander100 Jamboree, taking place at the Kandersteg International Scout Centre in (where else?) Kandersteg, Switzerland, this summer. Actually, this episode is mostly a banter/catch-up session, but there is a fun and (potentially) challenging meeting idea for Scouts to be found near the end. Shout-Outs First, Scouter George from the 1st Cobble Hill Scout Group wrote in with some follow-up on a podcast review that was discussed previously: "Thank you for your support of Scouts and Scouters across Canada with your podcast. I hope you get a chance to have Liam join, maybe after his cross-country listening tour?" If Liam is interested in coming on an episode of the podcast, we'd be happy to have him! It's always nice to add guest voices. Additionally, speaking of reviews, Scouter Chris from the UK left us one a while ago: "Recently discovered your podcast. Finding and keeping volunteers: the ever-present challenge every Scout Group faces. Podcast Topics Ken is joined by Scouter Jonathan for this episode, to revisit a topic that was discussed as recently as Episode 121: how do you find volunteers for your Scout Group? And once you've done so...how do you retain them? As you might well imagine, there's no one-size-fits-all, cut-and-dried solution. It's generally not a winning strategy to try and force the issue by way of ultimatums, though at times it may be necessary to trade someone's commitment to train up as a Scouter for a “reserved” spot in the program for their child. But once you've got those volunteers, how do you retain them? How do you keep them coming back? In part, this will depend on running a great program; parental engagement will follow youth engagement, in most cases. And in part, this will also depend on giving each Scouter the chance to shine in the role, to bring their knowledge and talents into the program for the benefit of the youth. But perhaps the most important thing is to foster a sense of community and friendship between Scouters. It's one thing to show up every week for meetings; it's quite another to be able to meet up, have fun, and support each other outside of meetings too. Revisiting the how-tos of a parent meeting. Podcast Topics Ken and Colin revisit a topic from almost half the podcast ago — Episode 67, published in September of 2018, specifically — and offer some thoughts on how to hold a successful parent meeting. You can find some interesting blog articles about what needs to be communicated to parents, and how, and exactly how you go about it with the parents of youth in your Group will depend on all sorts of factors. But in summary, here's the gist of what a successful parent meeting should include: Meetings, rather than one meeting. The 59th, at least, has had better success by ditching the “one big meeting” in favour of having the Group Commissioner come out to the first or second meetings for each Section. Set fundraising expectations early. Make the pitch for volunteers, both parent helpers and Scouters. Explain the badge program. Explain the uniform. Explain the Code of Conduct and set expectations for youth behaviour. Food isn't necessary, but it isn't unwelcome. Shout-Outs Scouter Eric from the Northern Lights Medical Venturers reached out to us to let us know that the MedVents are once again accepting membership applications. A lot of adults have no clue about their role within the order of the arrow. It's important to remember that they are no longer running things or actively engaged in running the lodge or chapter. Adult Scouters should look to becoming more of a mentor and advise youth leadership. Being an active role model for the youth is important to inspire tomorrow's leaders. Working as an advisor for any aspect of your chapter or lodge is a worthwhile endeavor.

A very popular answer to this question is YES! Many new adult leaders were once involved in the Order of the Arrow. Now that they are back in scouting they are wondering how to reestablish their membership. Hopefully, this video helps Scouters get back involved with their lodge. Membership in the order of the arrow is permanent regardless of where or when you did ordeal or brotherhood. It's just a matter of re-establishing the connection. All adult leaders that have been in the Order of the Arrow can reestablish membership. This includes Cubmasters, Den Leaders, Committee Chair, Charter Organization Representative, etc. It's recommended that you commit to getting involved in your lodge and chapter as much as you possibly can.

How do you attract volunteers to Scouting? Podcast Topics Ken and Colin attempt to tackle a question that almost every section of every Scout Group has to deal with at some point: how to handle a shortage of qualified volunteers — whether you call them Scouters, Leaders, or Cub/Scoutmasters — and how to go about attracting new volunteers to the program. It's going to be hard to start; that's pretty much a given. Running program when you're short on people is difficult, and you'll likely have to get a bit creative; maybe you'll need to borrow Scouters from another section within your Group, or maybe you'll need to borrow Scouters from another Group entirely. Maybe you'll need to schedule activities that see two sections come together in one space, so that Scouters can be shared between sections. But the important thing is to find ways to keep running a program for the youth...and then go all-in on that program. Do whatever fun and crazy things cross your mind, or the youths' minds. Because effective recruitment probably starts not with begging or cajoling parents into signing up, but in making sure that the youth are engaged and having fun, week after week. And once you've got that happening, the next steps in the recruitment process become easier. Shout-Outs Firstly, we have a shout-out to Scouter Charles, who sent us a link to ScoutmasterCG's chart of different types of camp fuels, which discusses the ethics of each: https://scoutmastercg.com/disposable-propane-cylinders-2/ Secondly, Scouter Carl from the 6th Stockport Scouts sent us an update on how things are going for his group. He's been navigating the challenges of a career change as well, but it sounds like Scouting in Stockport is alive and well...and even going on camps! Thirdly, Scouter Shane from Cub Pack 290 in New Hampshire reached out to see about arranging a chat between a couple of Arrow of Light Scouts from his pack, and any interested Cubs and Scouts from the 59th Edmonton. Happily, that discussion — a requirement for Arrow of Light — was able to happen recently. Each unit should have a recruitment team of Scouters that are ready to promote their unit at any event. They should also be equipped with applications and new parent guides. The team should be very familiar with the process and know what kind of training would be needed. They would also help recruit leaders for the committee and scout-facing leadership.

You have attended Wood Badge and worked your ticket and now you got your beads. Now the Wood Badge course director has asked you to help by joining the staff. You say YES, and they hand you a bunch of recruiting material? Now you need to go get Scouters signed up. Some courses are full and no recruiting is needed, but some need help getting Scouters to signup. Be Prepared for this challenge by knowing the program and being able to answer questions. You know that Wood Badge is the highest level of training in Scouting. You also know Scouters who are waiting for some reason to take the course. Always remember that Wood Badge is serious training and not a used car. Don't go “high-pressure salesmen” on a scout leader who is not ready. Like we keep saying here, most have never been asked. Just give them the opportunity and they will jump on board.

The Order of the Arrow… OA for short is shrouded in mystery only because it's an honored society that most non-Scouters don't know anything about. One of the mysterious positions is that of the Elangomat. This is a youth or adult OA member who has undergone training to lead a clan (a group of 5-8 Scouts) through the ordeal process. The Elangomat performs their duties silently as an example of brotherhood, cheerfulness, and service. After the Ordeal, the Elangomat may be in contact with the new Ordeal members to encourage them to complete their membership process by going through Brotherhood. Many members of the OA brotherhood have taken on the responsibilities of Elangomat and have been recognized by their Chapter and Lodge.

Every American, young and old, should read or listen to the Declaration of Independence at least once a year. The Declaration of Independence sets forth the rationale for the decision by the original thirteen colonies to leave British rule and declare independence. Thus, in July 1776, the United States of America was born as an independent nation where individuals could prosper amid the unalienable rights of "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness" granted by the Creator. A reading of the Declaration of Independence is a great first episode because it is important for every scout and scouter to know the reasons for America's origin. The Citizenship in the Nation merit badge, and several other citizenship requirements for advancement throughout the scouting program require a keen sense of awareness of what makes for good citizens. Understanding this key document of American history is a perfect way for scouts to begin to understand what makes America so special. Scouters may use the material to aid in the Citizenship in the Nation merit badge, or may otherwise use it to have a discussion with scouts on America's Declaration of Independence and why it is still important to this day. I read the document on July 5, the day after the 245th anniversary of our great nation's decision to leave British rule. I hope you enjoy! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wood-badger/message

The Order of the Arrow (OA) is Scouts BSA National Honor Society. Scout leaders need not think of it as competition and need to promote the OA within the unit. There are many reasons for supporting the OA. It helps retain older Scout, teaches good leadership skills and it’s fun. ScouterStan goes over how you can promote the OA inside the unit. There are adult leader positions within the Troop or Crew where they can serve as an advisor. Keeping a good eye on the OA and unit schedule is important. Scouters should never think that the OA is a distraction on older Scouts from unit leadership. All OA members know that the priorities are with their unit.

Do you remember “The Sweet Sixteen’s” of Scout Safety? Here is a quick reminder of safety concerns. Qualified Supervision – Proper amount of trained leaders. Physical Fitness – Aproperet Safe activities. Buddy System – Time tested. Safe Area Or Course – Have a backup plane. Scouts Canada have published guidelines for how, and when, in-person Scouting in Canada can resume. Podcast Topics Can you believe this is our 100th full-length episode?Ken and Colin follow up on the previous episode, in light of Scouts Canada’s recently-published framework for how in-person Scouting events (in Canada, at least) are to be carried out once they resume. Scouts Canada has decreed that no in-person programming shall take place over the summer; groups can hopefully expect to return to in-person activities in the fall. However, at least until the end of the year, no indoor activities will be allowed. Also discussed are these research findings, which Scouts Canada recently published after conducting surveys of parents and Scouters. And hey...we have a YouTube channel now! At present, you can expect to find full-length videos of each episode (starting with this one) there, and at some point there may be other videos posted there as well (e.g. when Scouter Ken gets around to carving staves with his daughters later this summer). Consider subscribing; the more subscribers we have, the sooner we can give ourselves a meaningful, custom YouTube URL, instead of youtube.com/channel/UCAsgJsCD1c_nIWmNEH-3DSg. Shout-Outs Firstly, an apology and overdue shout-out goes out to Scouter Carl, who wrote in to the podcast’s Facebook page a few weeks ago: Hi there, I'm a scout leader (and Group Scout leader) with a group in Stockport, England.Been listening to your podcast for a couple of months now (probably since the lockdown began I think, when I did a search for as many different podcasts as I could find about Scouting). We've been running weekly meetings using Zoom as well as making use of microsoft Teams and Sharepoint. Putting on virtual camps, making at home programmes and challenges for our members to use.I'm trying to come up with meeting ideas that we wouldn't normally be able to do in a face to face setting and so far I have planned to take the Scouts to Brazil and do a virtual tour of the Museu de Arte de Sao Paulo to earn our artist activity badge. We're going to have a competition to see who can dock the Crew Dragon capsule to the ISS in the shortest time without crashing. We're also trying to do some community outreach without going out.As part of our World challenge badge we need to try to make contact with Scouts from another country. Is there any way we could link up for what would be our evening (7:30pm) in England and I think about lunch (12:30 mountain daylight time) in Canada with Some leaders (and Scouts if possible) to talk about and look at uniforms, promise and law similarities and differences. Talk about some of the activities we do. That sort of thing.I'm wondering if you could help me out or pass the message on to anyone who could help with this. It would be brilliant to be able to communicate with Scouts from another part of the world and I think my Scouts would really get a lot out of it! If anyone would like to get in touch with Carl’s group, let us know via any form of contact listed below. As well, a shout-out is due for Scouter Gord, who wrote in about the soon-to-be-demolished Scout Hall in Airdrie, Alberta: Hey there love the program. I thought this would be some interesting scouting news for you. After almost 35 years the city of Airdrie is tearing down the Scout Hall. It is a sad time for us for sure but we are looking forward to a new future. We covered this story in a Scouting Five episode a couple weeks back. Social distancing and self-isolation are, for now, the new normal. How can we keep Scouts engaged with their troops at a time like this? Podcast Topics Ken and Colin practice a little social distancing this week, and make use of the podcast’s Discord server (which you are encouraged to join; it’s likely we will be using it to record episodes for the next few months, and we’d love to have new voices join in) for recording purposes. The topic this week is, as noted in the episode summary, how to enable the youth of your Scout group to continue their Scouting adventure whilst also engaging in the social distancing and/or self-isolation that has become so critically important in recent weeks. One way Scouters can foster this — and, no doubt, provide parents with some go-to activities to hand to their children while they themselves adjust to e.g. working from home for the first time — is through sending out periodic (daily, weekly, other) challenges. You can grab the Scout from Home challenge that Ken issued to his Cub Scouts and Scouts, for example...or, if your group has a social media presence, you could issue daily challenges via posts thereto. It’s also worth mentioning that ScoutLink will be hosting a special edition of Jamboree on the Internet (JOTI). This will take place from April 3rd until April 5th; you can find out more at the ScoutLink website, or at the JOTA-JOTI website. And on the subject of enabling youth to connect electronically, several Scout groups have been enjoying some success using Zoom (a free videoconferencing solution) to host periodic video “check ins” with their youth. Another option for enabling this sort of connection, using a technology that many Scouts probably already make use of daily, if not weekly, is Discord; setting up a Discord server is free, and servers there allow for text, audio, and video chats. There’s even a semi-official Scouting-focused Discord server, run by a New Zealand organization called ScoutWired. Shout-Outs As always, a big thank you to the folks at Scouting Radio for rebroadcasting Scouting Stuff episodes to their worldwide Scouting audience.
