Former U.S. Ambassador to Israel Ed Djerejian says Israeli Prime Minister Yitzak Rabin once told him “There is no military solution to this conflict, only a political one.” Rabin was assassinated a few years later and today bullets are flying, bombs are falling, and 1,200 Israelis are dead after the Hamas terrorist attacks of October 7 and nearly 30,000 Gazans have been killed in the Israeli response. Yet Djerejain still believes that a breakthrough is possible even in the current moment, as horrible as it is. Djerejian, a senior fellow at Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center for Science and International Relations, says the crisis has shaken the regional status quo to the point where—if the United States pursues diplomacy that includes principled pragmatism, coalition-building, and good old- fashioned backbone—a breakthrough may finally be possible. But in a recent paper he argues that any breakthrough will have to be built around a two-state solution, which he says is the only path to peace and stability not only in Israel and Palestine, but the wider Middle East. Djerejian's career as a diplomat spanned eight U.S. presidential administrations beginning with John F. Kennedy's, and he also served as U.S. Ambassador to Syria and Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs. Ed Djerejian's Policy Recommendations:The U.S. should stake out a strong, principled position on a two-state solution based on land for peace. The U.S. should build a broad multinational coalition around its diplomacy in the region.U.S. leaders and diplomats should make American national security interests clear, both globally and in the region.Ambassador (Ret.) Edward P. Djerejian is a residential Senior Fellow at the Middle East Initiative in Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center for Science and International Relations. Djerejian joined the U.S. Foreign Service in 1962 and his 32-year diplomatic career spanned eight presidential administrations from John F. Kennedy to William J. Clinton. Djerejian is a leading expert on national security, foreign policy, public diplomacy, and the complex political, security, economic, religious, and ethnic issues of the broader Middle East. He is the author of “Danger and Opportunity: An American Ambassador's Journey Through the Middle East.” He recently completed a nearly 30-year tenure as founding director of Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy. Ambassador Djerejian graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in 1960. He received an Honorary Doctorate in the Humanities from his alma mater in 1992 and a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, from Middlebury College. He speaks Arabic, Russian, French, and Armenian. His many awards and honors include the Presidential Distinguished Service Award, the Department of State's Distinguished Honor Award, the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, the Anti-Defamation League's Moral Statesman Award, the Award for Humanitarian Diplomacy from Netanya Academic College in Israel, the National Order of the Cedar. In this episode of Let Go & Lead, accomplished change leader and founder and CEO of We Need Social Celine Schillinger talks with Maril about the relational leadership skills required in today's business world — and how much those differ from what we've been taught to value in leaders. Schillinger, the author of Dare to Un-lead, sees eye-to-eye with Maril's people-first lens on change leadership. The two discuss the vulnerability and self-effacement required to create movements inside companies, the immense power of co-creating solutions with employees and how often, the best way to improve business outcomes is simply to prioritize building a community of people who care for each other. Learn about: 10:54 Why the typical change approach has no heart 14:18 How companies can co-create change 18:47 How “Un-leading” differs from traditional leadership 25:25 Why leaders need to evolve to “Un-lead” 36:28 Creating movements in a hybrid world 55:55 Takeaways from the episode — A pioneering voice in Engagement Leadership, Celine has been recognized multiple times for her large-scale innovative engagement initiatives in the corporate world. More About Professor Goldberg: Bob Goldberg is a plant molecular biologist who specializes in the area of plant genomics. The goal of his research has been to understand how plant cells differentiate and how genes are activated selectively in specialized cell types during plant development. Professor Goldberg's research has provided a conceptual foundation for the processes that regulate gene expression in higher plants. In collaboration with others, he utilized genes identified in his laboratory to develop a novel system to genetically engineer for male fertility control in crop plants. This system was used to develop new hybrid varieties of canola plants that have significantly increased yields of oil. His current research is using state-of-the-art genomics technologies to identify all of the genes required to make a seed. Professor Goldberg received a B.S. in Botany at Ohio University, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Plant Genetics from The University of Arizona. Professor Goldberg was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the California Institute of Technology and joined the UCLA faculty in 1976. Professor Goldberg served twice as Director of the Plant Genetics Program at the USDA, has been on the Editorial Boards of many internationally recognized journals such as Science, and was the Founding Editor and Editor-In-Chief of The Plant Cell, the leading journal in the area of plant molecular biology. He has been the organizer of many major international plant molecular biology meetings, is the Director of The Seed Institute - an intercampus institute without walls within the University of California dedicated to unraveling the processes that control seed development. Professor Goldberg has given hundreds of lectures on his research world-wide, and has received several awards recognizing his contributions to the field of plant molecular biology. These include election to the National Academy of Sciences, the National Order for Scientific Merit from the President of Brazil, being named as a UCLA Faculty Research Lecturer, and being listed as making one of the "top 15" Discoveries in UCLA's 75-year history. Two former attorneys turned filmmakers. Meet Erin Kenway, Producer / Executive Producer and Katherin Hervey, Director / Producer of the multiple award winning hit documentary film "The Prison Within." The documentary is nominated by Film Threat Award This! Katherin was the Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Shades of Contradiction, a nationally distributed arts and culture magazine dedicated to critical thinking and creative action. Katherin . She has produced, directed and art-directed short documentary and narrative films, including "The Cocktail Waitress" for KCTS/PBS broadcast. THE PRISON WITHIN, her first feature film, sprung from her work as a Los Angeles Public Defender and volunteer prison college instructor, where she worked weekly with prisoners who had committed serious acts of violence and had been sentenced to die in prison. Unredeemable in the eyes of the law, she saw the exact opposite and sought to create a film that captured the complexity of the people locked behind bars, in stark contrast to the dominant black and white depiction of victims, prisoners, and those we label as "criminals". Katherin is currently at work on a new film. Alanis Obomsawin and Face2Face host David Peck talk about reconciliation, leaving a legacy, Jordan’s Principles, passion, commitment, advocacy, fighting back and why every child matters.TrailerMore Info HereSynopsis:It took one little boy, Jordan River Anderson, to ensure that thousands of First Nations and Inuit children can today receive the same standard of social, health and education services as the rest of the Canadian population. In Jordan River Anderson, The Messenger, Alanis Obomsawin’s latest film (her 52nd), the renowned documentary filmmaker chronicles the long legal fight against a health care system that operated on two disconnected levels, causing injustices and suffering—a situation that has since been significantly improved. The Abenaki filmmaker traces the parallels between the lives of two First Nations children, Jordan River Anderson and Noah Buffalo-Jackson.A member of the Norway House Cree Nation of Manitoba, Jordan River Anderson had very serious health problems, for which he was being treated at a Winnipeg hospital. He could have ended his life in adapted housing close to his family, but because of his Indian status a dispute arose between the governments of Canada and Manitoba over who should pay the costs of his relocation to home-based care. Jordan died in hospital in 2005. Jordan’s Principle, which states that the first government agency to be contacted is the one responsible for this phase of a child’s care, was unanimously adopted by the House of Commons in 2007, and a ruling by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal resolved the issue of jurisdiction. Many people and organizations worked hard for this outcome, but despite the judgment and the funding that was allocated for Jordan’s Principle, many First Nations and Inuit parents are still faced with a refusal of social, health and educational services. For example, when Carolyn Buffalo and Richard Jackson needed specialized transportation for their teenage son, Noah Buffalo-Jackson, who suffers from cerebral palsy, they had to pay for it themselves. Similarly, the First Nation of Wapakeka in Ontario appealed for assistance in combating a wave of suicides in their community, but received no help. “We hear a lot about universal health care in Canada,” says Aimée Craft, a law professor at the University of Ottawa who is interviewed in the film, “but why is it universal for everyone except First Nations children?”Numerous binding government orders and the goodwill of several Canadian government officials, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, were required before First Nations and Inuit parents and children were finally able to enjoy appropriate support. “The law is a shield that protects this generation of children,” observes Cindy Blackstock, director general of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society, and one of the protagonists of the documentary. “It restores their dignity, and allows them to grow up within their own families. Justice is possible.”Filmed in centres of political power, in First Nations communities, and at public demonstrations, Jordan River Anderson, The Messenger provides a forum in which the voices of parents, caregivers, and their legal representatives can all be heard. Alanis Obomsawin’s latest documentary completes, on a note of optimism, the cycle of films devoted to the rights of children and Indigenous peoples that she began with The People of the Kattawapiskak River.About the Director:Alanis Obomsawin, a member of the Abenaki Nation, is one of Canada’s most distinguished documentary filmmakers. As a prolific director with the National Film Board, she has created an extensive body or work focusing on the lives and concerns of Canada’s First Nations. She began her professional career in 1960 as a singer in New York City. In 1967, producers Joe Koenig and Bob Verrall invited her to join the NFB as an adviser on a film about Indigenous peoples. She has not put down her camera since. An activist as well as a filmmaker, Obomsawin is driven to provide a forum for the country’s First Peoples. Her entire filmography is a testament to that desire. Her documentaries have always sought to show the importance of roots and strong intergenerational bonds for the preservation of Indigenous cultures—from Christmas at Moose Factory (1971), in which she used children’s drawings to tell the story of a Cree village on the shore of James Bay, Ontario, to Jordan River Anderson, The Messenger (2019), her most recent film (her 52nd), which documents the long struggle to establish the right of Indigenous children to receive, in their own communities, the same high standard of health care as the rest of the Canadian population.Obomsawin is a director who knows how to film conflict, as demonstrated by her four films about the Oka Crisis of 1990: Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance (1993), winner of 18 international awards; My Name Is Kahentiiosta (1995); Spudwrench: Kahnawake Man (1997); and Rocks at Whiskey Trench (2000).Alanis Obomsawin has received numerous awards and honours throughout her career. She was inducted into the Canadian Film and Television Hall of Fame in 2010, and in 2014 she received the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television Humanitarian Award, an honour given in recognition of exceptional contributions to the community and the public sector. In 2015, the Valdivia International Film Festival (Chile) recognized her body of work with its Lifetime Achievement Award, and she received an Honorary Life Member Award from the Directors’ Guild of Canada in 2018.Obomsawin has received honorary doctorates from many universities, including Dalhousie University in 2016 and McGill University in 2017. In 2016, she also received two of the highest civilian honours conferred by the Province of Quebec when she was named a Grand Officer of the National Order of Quebec and awarded the Prix Albert-Tessier. In 2019, she became a Companion of the Order of Canada.Image Copyright: Alanis Obomsawin and NFB. Used with permission.F2F Music and Image Copyright: David Peck and Face2Face. Gad Elmaleh has been voted the Funniest Man in France, named Night of the Order of Arts and Letters by France's Minister of Culture and named Night of the National Order of Quebec. He's also worked with such giants as Steven Spielberg, Woody Allen and Al Pacino... but you may know him from his hugely popular Netflix comedy specials, Gad Gone Wild, or American Dream, if you don't know him as "the Seinfeld of France". Tonight, April 12, 2019, he adds Huge in France, the scripted Netflix Comedy Series very loosely based on his life and comedy, to his repertoire. Luckily for me, I had the great fortune of acting opposite Gad on Huge in France, where I learned that his attention to the craft of comedy and his philosophy on taking risks are two of the biggest keys to his immense success. We talk about comedy, acting, hard work, risk, bombing on stage, starting over from scratch and much, much more. We may or may not have a few laughs at ourselves for the ridiculousness of two guys sitting in a hotel room talking about themselves and their work. SHOWNOTES: “For me I want to ‘be in a box’ as a writer, a comedian, joke-teller, storyteller, (6:20). “Comic’s sometimes say ‘I’m a comic and I want to be taken seriously and want people to see that I can be moving”, but you don’t need that, you don’t need to be serious, just be funny,” (7:39). “The comedy I like are the real life comedies that is sincere, sad, real or accident, but I don’t like gags. I like to be touched by it because there is always a problem that is being solved”, (9:15). My dad was a mime and I was inspired by him, I used his influence even in my acting, (11:56). Sebastian Maniscalco is one of my favorite comics in America, his body language is almost a mime sometimes and you see everything that he describes, (14:06). I need to do new material, for the audience but obviously for myself too, I want to have fun. (15:24). "Maybe the thing I fear the most is to get bored", (15:44). Some people will say it’s being a workaholic but I'm just passionate about it, (17:01). “If you don't have the language, it's hard to be yourself.", (17:59). When I met you Matt, you were talking about “feeling saucy” what does that mean?, (22:05). It’s hard to do your job but not as completely as you want, I getting there little by little but it’s a process, (27:50). The great feeling is every time that I get a laugh, I would feel like I earned it, (28:30). “I wanted to go to law school but I failed the exam”, (31:40). “I was more interested in people, humans, history than pure political science,” (32:25). "I'm obsessed with obsession... I'm obsessed with observation. Sometimes when I do a movie and I get bored, I get more excited about observing the crew and speaking to them,” (33:50). Rock bands could relate to this, one day I woke up and had no idea where I was. Then I was wondering why I do what I do?, (40:35). I learned something about stand up comedy, do what’s the most organic, make it natural and go with the flow, (52:13). The word “NO” is the beginning of a very long process that I am not going to give up, (56:50). "You have to see yourself as the starting line, but never as the goal.", (57:50). "The only things we regret in life are those that we didn't do.", (59:13). Women’s rights advocate AlAnoud AlSharekh is a leader in the fight to end violence against women and promote women’s political participation in the Middle East. She has worked in Kuwait and throughout the region to promote women’s rights. In this podcast, AlSharekh talks with Hindy about the challenges and opportunities for those pushing for legal reform in the the region. AlSharekh is the founding director of the Abolish 153 campaign to end legislation that effectively gives men regulatory, judicial, and executive power over their female kin—including minimal repercussions for honor killings—in Kuwait and the Arabian Gulf region. She is an outspoken advocate for women’s rights in a region where so-called “disciplinary violence” by men against their female kin remains permissible by law and by social practice. Article 153 of Kuwait’s penal code treats “honor killing”—when a man murders his sister, wife, daughter, or mother after becoming enraged by her adulterous or sexual transgression—as a misdemeanor, punishable with a maximum three-year prison sentence or a $50 fine. Last summer, three Arab countries passed legislation on violence against women following years of advocacy by local and international campaigns. AlSharekh is also a consulting partner at Ibtkar Strategic Consultancy, where she is training a group of Kuwaiti women political leaders to run for office. In 2016 AlSharekh was awarded a knighthood (National Order of Merit) by the French government for her work promoting women’s rights in the region. She holds a PhD from SOAS London in Comparative Literature and Feminism. Participants include: AlAnoud AlSharekh, founding director of the Abolish 153 campaign Lily Hindy, senior associate, The Century Foundation Editor's Note: This podcast was updated as of April 3, 2018.

Today on the podcast I welcome Nick Wolf who many of you know as the "Patch King". After using some customized patch trading blankets at the 2015 National Order of the Arrow Conference Nick set about seeing if he could design and produce a patch trading blanket for the hobby. After six months of developement he released his blanket which features room for up to 30 different flap/CSP shaped patches along with a zipper system to keep them in place. Since then Nick has also released a matching blanket that is the perfect size for OA two-piece sets and is about to come out with one madef or neckerchiefs and jacket patches. In this interview Nick shares the story of how he got inspired to make the patch blanket and we talk about the process of getting it to production. The hope is that many Scouts and Scouters attending the 2017 National Scout Jamboree will put these to good use. I met Mary Lou Schwarzer at the recent Easley, South Carolina Trade-O-Ree sponsored by Chris Jensen. What makes his encounter interesting is that she drove down from the Blue Ridge Mountains Council in Virginia (http://www.bsa-brmc.org) to unload a lot of her council's old inventory including camp patches, OA and special issue CSPs. In talking with here I also learned that she has an official BSA council account on eBay and regularly sells items on that marketplace as well. Mary Lou graciously agreed to let me interview her to find out her impressions of the TOR and tips on how it works for a non-profit to sell on eBay. The interview runs about fifteen minutes and I think it really should give Boy Scout councils and other non-profits some ideas for how to leverage the millions of potential customers on eBay. What if you could sell on eBay with no listing or final value fees and get reduced shipping costs? Listen in while she also explains how sellers can use the service to donate money directly from their auction sales to the non-profit of their choice. What if councils could reach out to local sellers and have them 10% of their gross eBay sales as a contribution? This is episode #72 of the podcast built for the Scouting memorabilia collecting community and I have big plans to keep going in 2015. I hope to have more guests, more topics and with the largest National Order of the Arrow Conference ever taking place at Michigan State you can believe this is going to be a good year for the hobby. I decided to record this episode of the podcast when I got a message from a Facebook friend. Krishna Palani asked, "Can you please offer me some resources and tips for trading patches at NOAC? I'm relatively new to trading and I'm going to NOAC this year." I started to fire off a message back when I realized that this was probably a topic that a lot of Arrowmen were curious about. I'm estimating that only 1/5 youth at the 2015 NOAC will be veterans of the last conference in 2012. So very few of them have had any experience going to a NOAC and might be curious for some tips just like Krishna.I spent some time writing an outline and just hit record. I talked for almost 45 minutes straight through without taking a break or hitting the edit button. This might be the first time in years that I've just recorded my stream of thought and never edited a single word in post-production. However, I'm extremely happy with the result. I think the content in this show will be very valuable for any Arrowmen (youth or adult) that has never attended a National OA Conference. What you get here is my unfiltered opinion and I'm sure I'm going to make a few people mad with me for that reason.Find more Scouting memorabilia content and all of my podcasts at http://www.scoutpatchcollectors.com.
Chris Jensen of Streamwood Inc. has been in the Boy Scout memorabilia hobby since the 1960s and as a full-time memorabilia dealer he has hosted more than forty trade-o-rees including ones for the National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC). Streamwood will be running a NOAC trade-o-ree for the three days leading up to the event on August 1-3. In this interview Chris Jensen goes over all the details for the Big Monster NOAC TOR. Our FBA Dharmabyte, and#8220;Ritual, Metaphor and Poetryand#8221; is a beautiful excerpt on communication as exchange of energy and experience. Happy is the mind that is steeped in totality, Dhammadassin reveals the ritual in the world through poetry and metaphor. Back in the 1990s I was a college student who looked forward to the quarterly newspaper catalog of Boy Scout memorabilia that would show up in my university P.O. Box. My guest tonight on Scouting Hot Finds Radio has been a full time Scout memorabilia dealer for going on three decades. Chris Jensen, the owner of Streamwood.net is one of the most well known figures in the hobby. He has organized dozens of trade-o-rees including ones at the National Scout Jamboree and the National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC). He has published reference books on collecting merit badges and Order of the Arrow conclaves to name a few. But perhaps he is most famous for the ubiquitous Boxware frames that sit on just about every TOR table around the country. I've been waiting several months to tie him down for an interview and tonight you can hear part 1 where he opens up about his story and the hobby of Boy Scout patch collecting.
