Each week we'll share “road markers”, values that clarify the narrow way and serve as guide rails through the turns. Though we may have lost the certainty of a clearly mapped plan because of disruption and changing times, we are not lost. There is a way marked out for us. There is a promise here to compel us further and deeper in, to strengthen our shaky knees and weak hearts for the journey.

With Tomás Nido no longer in Flushing, the player on the Mets with the most plate appearances this season and no home runs is the player who has essentially replaced him, Omar Narváez, currently 6-for-31 with his new club.Narváez has 51 home runs in his career: 12 with the White Sox, 22 in his one year with the Mariners, and 17 with the Brewers. Let's track it back to his first, and go from there for the Omar Narváez home run chane.* Omar Narváez hit his first home run off Pat Dean, 9/30/16* Pat Dean gave up his first home run to Nick Castellanos, 5/16/16* Nick Castellanos hit his first home run off Josh Beckett, 4/9/14* Josh Beckett gave up his first home run to Vladimir Guerrero Sr., 9/19/01* Vladimir Guerrero Sr. hit his first home run off Mark Wohlers, 9/21/96* Mark Wohlers gave up his first home run to John Morris, 9/1/91* John Morris hit his first home run off Kevin Gross, 9/24/86* Kevin Gross gave up his first home run to Keith Hernandez, 6/25/83* Keith Hernandez hit his first home run off Doug Rau, 5/24/75* Doug Rau gave up his first home run to Earl Williams, 9/7/72* Earl Williams hit his first home run off Barry Lersch, 4/17/71* Barry Lersch gave up his first home run to Willie Smith, 4/8/69* Willie Smith hit his first home run off Denny McLain, 6/14/64* Denny McLain gave up his first home run to Ken Retzer, 9/25/63* Ken Retzer hit his first home run off Jerry Walker, 9/16/61* Jerry Walker gave up his first home run to Rocky Colavito, 8/28/57* Rocky Colavito hit his first home run off Bobby Shantz, 4/25/56* Bobby Shantz gave up his first home run to Stan Spence, 5/18/49* Stan Spence hit his first home run off Johnny Allen, 8/20/40* Johnny Allen gave up his first home run to Earl Averill, 5/17/32* Earl Averill hit his first home run off Earl Whitehill, 4/16/29* Earl Whitehill gave up his first home run to Bob Meusel, 9/25/23* Bob Meusel hit his first home run off Jim Shaw, 6/2/20* Jim Shaw gave up his first home run to Eddie Murphy, 5/9/14* Eddie Murphy hit his first home run off Ray Caldwell, 10/3/13* Ray Caldwell gave up his first home run to Harry Hooper, 10/8/10* Harry Hooper hit his first home run off Joe Lake, 8/22/10* Joe Lake gave up his first home run to Harry Howell, 6/18/08* Harry Howell gave up his first home run to Dan McGann, 4/28/99* Dan McGann hit his first home run off George Cuppy, 9/5/96* George Cuppy gave up his first home run to Jocko Halligan, 5/1/92* Jock Halligan hit his first home run off Hank O'Day, 5/19/90* Hank O'Day gave up his first home run to George Strief, 5/6/84* George Strief hit his first home run off Will White, 5/3/82* Will White gave up his first home run to Joe Start, 5/7/78* Joe Start hit his first home run off Al Spalding, 10/4/71* Al Spalding gave up his first home run to Fred Treacey, 7/7/71That was the first home run of Fred Treacy's career, for the Chicago White Stockings against the Boston Red Stockings, a 7-1 win for the home team in the Windy City. It was, as you might guess, an inside-the-park homer according to SABR's home run database.Spalding only gave up 15 homers in 2886.1 innings as he completed 279 of his 325 career starts. A four-time 40-game winner, Spalding is indeed that Spalding, the one from the ball. Not a bad legacy for Treacey to have been the first to circle the bases against him. This is a public episode. Two very different stories in this week's Get To Know 'Em podcast. Pat Dean is a 29-year-old pitcher. He was the Twins 3rd round draft pick in 2010 out of Boston College. He pitched for the Twins during the 2016 season, even beating Felix Hernandez for his first big league win. After the season, he went to Korea where he has pitched the past two seasons. Just last month it was announced that he was returning to the Twins on a minor league contract. We ask him about a variety of topics including his big league call up, the decision to play in Korea and the differences in cultures and on the baseball field there. And we also talked about his decision to return to the Twins. Brent Rooker hit 32 doubles and 22 homers in Double-A Chattanooga in his first full season of professional baseball in 2018. He earned a big league spring training invitation. We talked to him about what Twins spring training has been like for him and what he has learned already. We talked about his 2018 season of ups and downs and what he wanted to work on going into the offseason. He was married in November as well.

A movie that most people know only as a line -- "I coulda been a contender" -- has surprising twists and wrinkles that make it an unusual watch 50+ years later. Fortunately, I have Pat Dean as a co-pilot, and we dig deep into the subtext and meaning of this labor drama while also taking detours to make sure we're okay, we're doing fine, we're not too lonely. It's a surprisingly revealing and tender episode surrounding an even more surprisingly brutal and bleak film. Check it out, and also check out Pat on his daily podcast the Lanalax Corporation (https://thelanalaxcorporation.podbean.com/) or his make-me-sound-dumb podcast I Learned Nothing (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/i-learned-nothing/id1263958157?mt=2). Joe and Laura are on the scene with Austin comedian, Pat Dean. Pat talks about working with friends on creative projects, including his podcasts, "I Learned Nothing" and "The Lanalax Corporation." While Laura tries to coerce Pat into eating a tunafish sandwich from 7/11, Joe works on "Barbra Walters-ing" him with hard-hitting questions. Pat refuses to eat a tunafish sandwich from 7/11, but he, instead, offers a clumsy metaphor for the meaning of friendship and a 6-pack of Lone Star.
