In this episode of the Erik Sherman Show, recorded remotely from Cooperstown, New York, Erik sits down with baseball legend Denny McLain. McLain, the last pitcher to win 30 games in a season, reflects on his incredible 1968 season where he won both the Cy Young Award and MVP. He also discusses the challenges of achieving such a feat in today's game, shares his thoughts on recent rule changes in baseball, and recounts how the 1968 Detroit Tigers helped unite a city torn by riots. The conversation offers fascinating insights into baseball history and the perspective of one of the game's great pitchers.
Yesterday's Sports is part of the Sports History Network - The Headquarters For Sports Yesteryear.EPISODE SUMMARYThe 1968 Detroit Tigers don't seem to get talked about as often as some other great teams in MLB history. Perhaps it's because they didn't win two or three World Series in a row like many other teams have. It could also be because the team's success was somewhat overshadowed by the attention directed at their pitcher, Denny McLain, who became the first MLB pitcher to win 30 games in a season since 1934. McLain also had a 1.96 ERA......You can read the full blog post here.YESTERDAY'S SPORTS BACKGROUNDHost Mark Morthier grew up in New Jersey just across the river from New York City during the 1970s, a great time for sports in the area. On January 26, 1963, Alarmed by such increased home run numbers across the Majors, Ford Frick convinced the owners to agree to having the strike zone widened before the 1963 season. The zone will stretch from the top of the batter's shoulders to the bottom of the knees. The committee hopes the return to the 1950s strike zone will result in a decrease in runs scored. The results will exceed the committee's expectations, in 1962 teams average 4.46 runs per game, in 1963 that number dropped to 3.95 and will hover around 4, until 67 when it drops to 3.77 and then in 1968 it was deadball like 3.42 runs per game. The Indians ‘63 staff would set a new AL record while being the first staff to K over 1000 in a season. Led by Sam McDowell and rookies Sonny Siebert and Luis Tiant, they would go on to set a new record in ‘64, with over 1100 Ks. They would set record numbers and lead the AL in Ks from ‘64-68, a feat still not matched! In 1968 we all know Bob Gibson had a record 1.12 ERA, but 6 other starters had ERAs under 2. 9-19-2023 Passed Ball Show. John spends this program making a case of why it would have been beneficial for the New York Mets to get All Star relief pitcher Edwin Diaz into a game or two THIS season as long as he is fully recovered from his injury, Among reasons outside the fact that he is being paid to pitch, John also analyzes why it makes more sense for the 2024 Mets to get him into a game or two this season. John spends a little bit of time talking about the decision made by Michigan State to fire Head Coach Mel Tucker and the fact that the school cares a lot more about not having to pay the $70 million owed to him than the victim and the reason they have "cause" to let him go. On today's #SavingSportsHIstory segment, John talks about Lefty Grove, Jackie Robinson winning the "Jackie Robinson Award," Denny McLain, Mickey Mantle, Jerry Rice, Roger Angell, Duke Snider, Joe Morgan, Hugo Bedzek, and makes a Baseball Hall of Fame case for the late Maury Wills.

The Mets traded Eduardo Escobar over the weekend, and he'll surely be missed — a great vibes guy who lost his job to Brett Baty and just didn't have a place on a team that needs a shakeup. FOGO MODE forever, and let's bid Escobar farewell with his home run chain.* Eduardo Escobar hit his first home run off Jeremy Guthrie, 4/9/13* Jeremy Guthrie gave up his first home run to Omar Infante, 9/14/04* Omar Infante hit his first home run off Kyle Lohse, 9/10/02* Kyle Lohse gave up his first home run to Dean Palmer, 6/22/01* Dean Palmer hit his first home run off Rick Honeycutt, 6/27/91* Rick Honeycutt gave up his first home run to Graig Nettles, 8/31/77* Graig Nettles hit his first home run off Denny McLain, 9/6/68Denny McLain connects us to the Omar Narváez home run chain… which was the last We Can Pod It Out post. But… what an achievement for Nettles, hitting the first home run of his career against the major leagues' last 30-game winner. Thing is, McLain not only won 31 games in 1968, he gave up a major league-leading 31 homers, too. In 41 starts, McLain allowed 86 runs, of which 48 came on dingers. That means an average of less than a run per game against him on non-homers… and 10 of those 38 runs were unearned.McLain gave up three homers to Reggie Jackson in 1968, and two apiece to Frank Howard, Tony Horton, Rich Reese, and Pete Ward — the last of whom hit the only grand slam against McLain that year.In addition to Nettles, players who took McLain deep in ‘68 included Boog Powell, Sal Bando, Bobby Cox, Harmon Killebrew, Rico Petrocelli, Joe Pepitone, and Orioles pitcher Dave McNally. Plus, near the end of the season, McLain gave up Mickey Mantle's 535th career home run — the last of Mantle's 42 at Tiger Stadium, his most at any visiting park. The following day, September 20, Mantle hit his last dinger, No. 536, back at Yankee Stadium (where he hit 266 homers), off Boston's Jim Lonborg. This is a public episode. It was, as you might guess, an inside-the-park homer according to SABR's home run database.Spalding only gave up 15 homers in 2886.1 innings as he completed 279 of his 325 career starts. A four-time 40-game winner, Spalding is indeed that Spalding, the one from the ball. Not a bad legacy for Treacey to have been the first to circle the bases against him. This is a public episode. Few players have burned so bright and fallen so far as Detroit Tigers Denny McLain. In 1968, 'The Year of the Pitcher', Denny would win 30 games, a World Series, release a record through Capitol Records, Denny McLain at the Organ and drink 24 bottles of Pepsi daily. The fall was fast; it involved fraud, the mafia, his house burning down, and jail time. Titus O'Reily and Mick Molloy looked at an athlete as brilliant as he was dodgy. The '60s were such a great time for the counterculture. For people rebelling against injustice, prejudice, and war. But Denny McLain didn't care about any of that. He was just kind of a jerk. And 53 years ago this week, he was suspended by Bowie Kuhn for helping fund an illegal sports book operation. How did he get involved in such a shady operation, how did that lead to the downfall of baseball's last 30 game winner, and what exactly was his problem anyway? Mike and Bill look back on a life and talent that seems largely wasted. Plus, happy birthday to far more productive members of society Dick Siebert and Tommy Henrich!
1968 is known as 'The Year Of The Pitcher', and no other pitcher stood out more than the Detroit Tigers' Denny McLain. With a winning record for the last three years, his achievement in the '68 season would become one of the greatest pitching performances in history. Because the wins just kept coming. It's September 14th, and the Tigers welcome the Oakland Athletic to Detroit. McLain is first up at the mound, sitting on a 29-5 record. The last pitcher to hit 30 wins was Dizzy Dean of the 1934 St Louis Cardinal. We join Ernie Harwell and Detroit Tigers Baseball Radio as McLain chases one more win to reach the historic high-water mark. You can find the boxscore here. This game was played on September 14th 1968. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/classicbaseballradio/message
EPISODE 78: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: 12 Republicans join the Democrats to give the codification of Marriage Equality a filibuster-proof majority. The Respect for Marriage Act will be law by Christmas (2:37) It seems so obvious; it is in fact breathtaking. 14 years ago a Democratic candidate could be elected POTUS without endorsing same-sex marriage. 26 years ago a Democratic president could sign legislation defining marriage as only between a man and a woman (4:02) And 14 years and exactly one week ago, I could startle viewers, my bosses, and some liberals by decrying the passage of Prop 8 in California - which TOOK AWAY Marriage Equality awarded by the courts - in a Special Comment called "A Question of Love" (12:15) This is how far we have come: Two months later I was approached by Sir Ian McKellan who said that the fact that I was able to incorporate those opinions into an American cable newscast meant "some of my hope for the future is restored." Today, with the path to codified Marriage Equality assured, some of MY hope for the future is restored. B-Block (17:48) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Penny, in Missouri (18:50) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Mike Pence defies Congress (and logic), now it's Stu Varney trashing Trump (to Trump's daughter-in-law), and a Democrat beats a Faux Democrat in LA (20:22) IN SPORTS: Two unanimous Cy Young Winners for the first time since Bob Gibson's 1.12 ERA and Denny McLain's 31 wins, Virginia cancels its football game, Kyrie coming back - but why? (23:11) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Laura Ingraham continuing to try to make the fabricated Pelosi Conspiracy Theory happen and Chris Licht drowning at CNN, compete with the executives of MSNBC, NBC News, and NBC. After getting fricasseed for firing Tiffany Cross to appease fascists like Tucker Carlson, they knew what to do: Trash her anonymously in The New York Post. C-Block (32:21) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: 30 years ago today, the Colorado Rockies and then-Florida Marlins were born in the baseball expansion draft which I anchored on ESPN. The draft followed one of the weirdest you're-gonna-die-on-THAT-hill things I ever witnessed in sports broadcasting. But most importantly: I can now confess that to get the scoop as to who would be the first pick, I did a terrible, terrible thing ;-)See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

TRUMP BACKING AWAY FROM "Q" OVER ROYALTIES? A-Block (1:47) SPECIAL COMMENT: At his latest rally Trump had security stop his cultists from doing the Q-Anon Sieg Heil and seemed to be backing away from the conspiracy theory. Or is it just that he found out he'll have to pay money for the damned "Q Song"? (5:15) Shocking developments as two excerpts from Maggie Haberman's book are actually relevant and revelatory as Trump confesses his true motivation for everything: the fear that people won't know who he is (9:07) And the Italian elections may seem remote and irrelevant, except that the apparent winner, the anti-LGBTQ anti-migrant fascist, is another Steve Bannon protege. B-Block (14:25) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Jelly Belly and Cooper in California (15:56) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Kevin McCarthy thinks he's quoting Lincoln when he's actually quoting a bank ad; JR Majewski says it's classified; Everybody hates Kyrsten, and NASA says 'Kiss your asteroid goodbye." (20:26) IN SPORTS: NFLPA has a headache over Too, and Judge stuck on 60. Plus the argument that the most homers is automatically the RECORD for homers is nonsense. The most strikeouts in a season isn't the RECORD for strikeouts, nor is the most steals. (27:52) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Somebody doesn't like my criticisms of CNN henchman Chris Licht, the Congressman who says women shouldn't vote, and what do you mean 'The Soviets irradiated Richard Nixon?' C-Block (33:13) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: For 46 years, I have told the saga of my ill-fated hero Fred Merkle and how they changed the rules on him in the middle of the game in September, 1908. But this'll be the first time I've told the extraordinary story of what his great-grandson did as a toddler, as his parents and I watched in astonishment, that left us wondering about reincarnation!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Take a spin around the Cleveland sports scene with Bud Shaw, who spent nearly 27 years there as a columnist with a keen and irreverent eye. Bud puts us with the 1997 Indians when they had World Series champagne on ice. Oops. He recounts a confrontation with glowering Albert Belle, which prompted sage advice from ready-for-battle baseball scribe Paul Hoynes. And Bud recalls covering the tragic boating accident that killed pitchers Tim Crews and Steve Olin. We also hear about a young LeBron James, the same old, same old Browns, and tales from Bud's media years before arriving in northeast Ohio. Those days include a prison visit with Denny McLain and Motoball in Moscow. Yes, Motoball. What? Shaw was a sports columnist for The Plain Dealer, and later Cleveland.com, from 1991 until he accepted a voluntary buyout in 2018. He then worked for WKYC.com in Cleveland that year before retiring. He won numerous Associated Press Sports Editor awards, including a top 10 in column writing, during his career. His story about the 1993 deaths of Crews and Olin received an honorable mention selection in the “Best American Sportswriting” series. Bud covered more than a dozen Super Bowls and World Series, six Olympic Games, eight Masters, the PGA and U.S. Open golf championships, the Ryder Cup, five Indianapolis 500s, the NBA Finals, the Stanley Cup Finals, the Daytona 500, the Final Four, and the U.S. Open tennis tournament. Before coming to Cleveland, Bud worked as bureau chief and columnist in Chicago and Detroit for The National Sports Daily from 1989-91. His career also included reporting stints at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (1984-89), the San Diego Union-Tribune (1982-84), the Philadelphia Daily News (1980-82), the Trenton (N.J.) Times (1978-80), the Johnstown (Pa.) Tribune Democrat (1977-78), and the Kittanning (Pa.) Leader Times (1976-77). The native of Philadelphia graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a journalism degree in 1976. Follow Bud on Twitter: @budshaw Learn more about your ad choices.
