We had the opportunity to record this episode in person at Citizens Bank Park on Lou Gehrig Day. Thank you to the Phillies for being so hospitable! We go through the takeaways from the week in Major League Baseball plus our Quirkjians seemed extra quirky this week. Submit yours at GreatGameOrWhat.com.Tim came up with his top team using only players who wore number four, there might be some disagreement in the infield on those. We hear about the New York Mets and even talk about both Tim and Jeff's mascoting experience (kind of).During our live streamed Lou Gehrig Day episode on Sunday, June 2nd, we spoke with two current players; Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola, whose uncle passed away from ALS, Brandon Crawford, who is deeply connected to the cause. We also hear live from Mike Piscotty, who's wife, Gretchen, passed away from the disease. Their son is pro ballplayer Stephen Piscotty. And also, Sam Hilliard, in the Colorado Rockies system, joined the show to talk about his father's battle with the disease. This is our chance to wrap up our weekend dedicated to ALS, if you missed Sarah Langs and Boog Sciambi, they were featured in their own episode released back on Friday, so scroll back to hear that. Thank you for supporting this cause and helping us raise awareness. Visit GreatGameOrWhat.com to contact the show with your questions, quips and insights. Joy Pop Productions LLC
"See a Different Game" was the motto of The Sporting News for a long time, and for a long time The Sporting News was known as the Bible of Baseball. Like everything, The Sporting News has changed, baseball coverage has changed, but more and more the best coverage remains true to that directive, "See a Different Game." And the best season for telling those kind of stories? Well, it just might be spring training. Stan McNeal, veteran baseball writer and editor and a senior staff writer at Cardinals Magazine, joins St. Louis Post-Dispatch baseball writer Derrick Goold to talk storytelling in a brand new BPIB. McNeal details the process of seeking stories for the club's official publication. He discusses going to Stephen Piscotty's hometown to see another side of the former Cardinals outfielder, about getting Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt in a room and see how it goes if the interviewer just listens to two infielders, and, for this year, what it was like tracking down the legend of Sonny Gray, the Cardinals' new leader of the rotation. McNeal spent nearly a decade covering baseball at The Sporting News and years in San Diego as an editor and sportswriter. He has seen the industry shift, baseball writing change -- but for the better? The Best Podcast in Baseball, sponsored by Closets by Design of St. Louis, is a production of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, StlToday.com, and Derrick Goold.
Friend of the show & relief pitcher, John Brebbia, returned to reflect back on the 2023 MLB season. Brebbia was one of the main San Francisco Giants key relievers & excelled as a ‘bull-pen' starter from time to time when the Giants needed someone to start the first few innings of a game.John also had fun discussing his beard that he grows out at the start of every season. John shared his plans on when he plans to shave it off! Also included in this episode is an interview I was able to do with Stephen Piscotty during spring training from inside the Giants spring training clubhouse. Piscotty has played for the Oakland Athletics & St. Louis Cardinals. Unfortunately, Piscotty did not make the team but grew up in the Bay Area & spoke on his career playing for the hometown teams as well as being a new father. For video footage of these interviews:John Brebbia - https://youtu.be/LgYf8aJImz4?si=YPhX64mwcVi-AzaZStephen Piscotty - https://youtu.be/Vc_ew-alpIY?si=P3QFmrHdlbXservLFor more exclusive content, follow the Jim on Base Show on social media (Twitter/Instagram/TikToK): @JimonBaseShow
Somewhere along the way in our trade deadline conversation, we stumble across old trades made in the Mozeliak era. More specifically, we rehash the Stephen Piscotty trade to Oakland.
Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Depth has been a focus for the San Francisco Giants since Farhan Zaidi took over, but they're looking a little thin in the outfield as the season approaches. Mitch Haniger (oblique) and Austin Slater (hamstring) are questionable for Opening Day, which is just over a week away in New York. What are the Giants' plans in the event that either or both has to miss time? Some fallback options would've included the likes of Luis González and Stephen Piscotty, but both are banged up as well. González recently had back surgery, and Piscotty has an oblique issue of his own. The SF Giants could put Joc Pederson or LaMonte Wade Jr. in the outfield, but that would create its own problems because they'd need to be platooned and there aren't any right-handed hitters to put in the outfield if Haniger and Slater are out.Ultimately, someone like Bryce Johnson may end up making the Giants' roster if there are injuries in the outfield. Johnson is the type of guy the Giants could simply stick in center field, appreciate his defense and baserunning, and take what they can get out of the No. 9 spot in the lineup. With the 2023 season not even here yet, we're already seeing the Giants' depth tested and it's not entirely clear where they'll turn.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Carlos Rodón was the latest example. The San Francisco Giants signed the high-octane lefty to a two-year deal with an out-out, and it seemingly went exactly as planned. The SF Giants got a year of an ace, and then they moved on without having to make a long-term commitment. We saw the same thing with Kevin Gausman, who played for the Giants on two straight one-year deals. Michael Conforto could be next, and Ross Stripling and Sean Manaea also have opt-outs after 2023.For the Giants, this is an effective strategy, but it's not what fans should expect in all cases. Fans want players to stick around for a while, and there are two ways that happens: homegrown talent, and superstars. The San Francsico Giants offered nine years, $360 million to Aaron Judge. They agreed to a 13-year deal with Carlos Correa. They offered 13 years to Bryce Harper. They're willing to go long-term for the best of the best, but not really for anyone else. And homegrown players come with six-plus seasons of team control.Switching gears, is there any chance Casey Schmitt takes over third base with a good spring and a poor one from David Villar? Is this a make or break season for Farhan Zaidi? Is Marco Luciano really someone who deserves to be on the back end of top 100 lists as opposed to the front? Will MLB's new rules make holding runners more or less important? Who has a longer leash: J.D. Davis or LaMonte Wade Jr.? And is there any chance Stephen Piscotty makes the team?Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

On Friday, the Giants took a 7-2 lead into the 9th inning. Trevor Gott, who has become the team's closer over the season's first month, starting the inning. He got an out against the first batter he faced, Matt Chapman, but things quickly went down hill from there. After allowing a home run and a walk, Robbie Grossman hit a ground ball to first baseman Wilmer Flores. The ground ball took Flores' momentum towards the first base bag. He fielded it cleanly and took a step or two towards first base, where he could have easily recorded the second out of the inning. Instead, he inexplicably decided to throw towards second base, where Brandon Crawford caught the ball but took his foot off the base and tried to tag the runner. No out was recorded on the play. Instead of two outs and a runner on second with a 7-3 lead, it was two on, one out, and a 7-3 lead. Gott then hit Khris Davis, which brought up Stephen Piscotty representing the tying run with just one out. Piscotty then proceeded to hit a game-tying grand slam on a hanging curveball. Gott got into more trouble, but Tyler Rogers got out of it. The Giants then proceeded to lose by a run in the 10th inning. It was the first time since the 1920s that the Giants blew a five-plus run 9th-inning lead. The next day, the Giants took a 6-3 lead into the 9th and Trevor Gott was summoned once again. Gott allowed a home run to the first batter he faced, but then settled down and recorded the first out. The next batter, Tony Kemp, hit a soft line drive out to right field, and Hunter Pence completely misjudged it. He ran in a couple steps, then veered back and to his right before the ball landed safely over his head. It was a ball that should have been caught. Gott then got the next batter on a line out. Matt Olson then came up representing the tying run. Left-handed pitcher Sam Selman, who has been very good this year, was loose in the 'pen and seemed like a solid option to replace Gott against the lefty Olson. But manager Gabe Kapler elected to leave Gott in the game, and he walked Olson to bring up the go-ahead run in Mark Canha. In a full count, Canha hit a go-ahead three-run homer. The Giants did not score in the bottom of the 9th and lost the game, 7-6. It was the first time in franchise history that the Giants lost back-to-back games in which they had three-plus run 9th-inning leads.Rock AutoAmazing selection. Reliably low prices. Locked On Blue Jays - Daily Podcast On The Toronto Blue Jays
Call her Trader A.J.The virtual Blue Jays have made a trade, but does that mean it doesn't teach us somethings about the real-life team? A.J. Andrews discusses how the move to acquire Stephen Piscotty and Matthew Koehler from the Athletics for Derek Fisher, Brandon Drury and Juan Martinez came about. She also talks about what she learned from the trade, particularly about Toronto's need for a bat that can actually hit lefties as part of the RF platoon. Also, she uses a conversation with @ThaGreatOne99 to frame why, among the many reasons, this trade would not happen in real life.Follow the podcast on Twitter @LockedOnJays and follow the host @A_J_Andrews!Subscribe on Himalaya, Google Play, Spotify, and iTunes! This episode is sponsored by Jays From the Couch, Built Bar, Postmates, and the Locked On Podcast Network.
