Episode 983-Jason Interviews James Aquilone - Darkest Depths - Monstrous Books - James Aquilone is the owner of Monstrous Books, writer of the Dead Jack Zombie Detective series, and editor of the anthologies Classic Monsters Unleashed, Shakespeare Unleashed, and the 50th anniversary Kolchak: The Night Stalker graphic novel. He has won the Bram Stoker Award for Best Graphic Novel and two Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards. The launch of DARKEST DEPTHS had been planned for 2023 as a joint project among Crystal Lake Publishing, Bram Stoker award winner James Aquilone, and acclaimed horror author and producer Taylor Grant. Sadly, after Taylor fell ill, the campaign was put on hold. Taylor, who was a development executive at Stan Lee Media and Head of Global Animation at Wattpad WEBTOON Studios, ultimately passed away from cancer in September 2024. Now DARKEST DEPTHS will serve as a tribute to Taylor and feature the last comic story he wrote, “It Lives in Darkness.” Additionally, profits from this crowdfunding campaign will be donated to his son Zane.Taylor believed in helping others and DARKEST DEPTHS will continue his legacy of mentorship by giving writers the opportunity to break into the comic book industry. Following the campaign, submissions will open for additional stories, the number depending on the campaign's final funding level. It is our hope that the DARKEST DEPTHS series will be the launching pad for many aspiring comic book writers.Back It: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/manbomb/darkest-depthsTheme Songs by Drew: Darkest Depths & LegacyLike & Subscribe on Youtube www.youtube.com/@comicsforfunandprofit5331Patreon https://www.patreon.com/comicsfunprofit Merch https://comicsfunprofit.threadless.comYour Support Keeps Our Show Going On Our Way to a Thousand EpisodesDonate Here https://bit.ly/36s7YeLAll the C4FaP links you could ever need https://beacons.ai/comicsfunprofit Listen To the Episode Here: https://comcsforfunandprofit.podomatic.com/

This week, we delve into classic small-screen macabre with a review of the highly-rated 1972 TV movie, "Kolchak: The Night Stalker." This is the first of two TV movies which led to the single season of a Kolchak TV show, which in turn inspired "The X-Files." - Preston is the big Kolchak fan in the group. How much, if any, were the other Geeks impressed by it? - Which odd comparison did one Geek make between Kolchak and a certain lawyer show character from the '80s & '90s. - Gayle Foster was an intriguing support character with an unclear profession and a surprising relationship with Kolchak. Which Geek(s) liked the mystery around Gayle, and which Geek(s) would have preferred more clarity around who & what she was? - Did we see enough of the vampire in the movie? Did the Geeks agree on this, or were there differing opinions? - Which Geek had a bit of a problem with Kolchak's publisher being so hesitant...to publish a story. - Which Geek(s) appreciated the time period in which this TV movie was made and adjusted their expectations accordingly? - What was the score of this movie's biggest fan? - What unofficial connections does Kolchak have to "The X-Files"? - What excuse did Todd find to mention "Babylon 5" this week? - Which Geek at one time wanted to be a reporter in the field? - And, did the Geeks forget to roll for a future topic in this episode? Listen now for the answers to these and other journalistic questions as we report on "Kolchak: The Night Stalker." So far, in season 4, we've had the 3rd & 4th of our four Christmas movie reviews, a review of a modern western, a 2023 year-in-review special, and now our first review of a TV movie. Coming...sometimes in 2024, we have the reviews of a video game "movie," a mainstream semi-modern fantasy, a sexy heist movie, and streaming channel horror movie trilgoy; plus a ranking of the MCU Phase 2, and much more. Yes, the Halloween tradition continues as Robert and Joe dive into the rich history of TV horror and sci-fi anthology shows to focus on STBYM topics that might not otherwise make the show. In this installment, they spin some science and contemplation out of the 2001 episode of “The Outer Limits” titled “Think Like a Dinosaur” and the 1974 episode of “Kolchak: The Night Stalker” titled “The Spanish Moss Murders.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tread Perilously's 2023 horror month focuses on werewolves, starting with an episode of Kolchak: The Night Stalker called, appropriately enough, "The Werewolf." When his editor's plan to cover a singles' cruise gets interrupted by a surprise audit, Kolchak ends up going in his place and meeting some groovy cats looking to party. But the ship has one decidedly un-groovy person aboard: a werewolf. Will the captain keep the unruly guest away from all the swingers or will the werewolf yeet most of the crew and passengers off the lido deck? Also, will Kolchak get definitive proof of the incident? Erik and Justin finally watch an episode of Kolchak. Star Darren McGavin instantly becomes an MVP. Guest star Nita Talbot also proves indispensable and the lived-in faces of the cast are instantly appealing. Erik double-checks to make sure David Chase co-wrote the episode. The X-Files gets gently roasted. Kolchak's roommate for the cruise proves to be an interesting character. Justin's belief that The Ice Storm was a documentary gets more validation. Various Supertain crossover occur. Erik determines what movie Justin will recognize character actor Henry Jones from. The pair envision a 'Dracula and Wolfman on a cruise' film. A wild Eric Braeden appears and the contours of maritime law are explored.

Guest host Richard Syrett and author Kendall Phillips explore the legacy of the 1970s horror television series Kolchak: The Night Stalker, how the story of a newspaper reporter investigating monsters was created, and why the series remains so influential fifty years later.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
EPISODE #773 KOLCHAK AND THE NIGHT STALKER Richard welcomes a communications professor and author to discuss the television series Kolchak: The Night Stalker, which aired on ABC for 20 episodes, beginning in the fall of 1974. He offers insights into how the series reflected contemporary horror narratives and changed them. Ultimately, the series proved influential for later television horror shows based on what it did right and on the mistakes future creators would learn to avoid. The enduring impact of the series on current television horror continues to draw more and more individuals into its robust fanbase, and these fans continue to consume and create new narratives of their favourite monster-hunting reporter even fifty years after he first appeared. Guest: Kendall Phillips teaches communications and rhetorical studies at Syracuse University.
