Polis was at the scene for Paul Caligiuri's shot heard round the world, he was also (for Umbro) the English language press liaison for the Brazilian national team (Romario, Bebeto, Dunga) in 1994. Polis joined Belz for a 75 minute conversation. He was prepared and he has a good memory and he brings a lot to the table, including a more relaxed perspective about the USMNT heading toward next summer than Belz has. Good medicine. Jason Longshore caught up with USMNT legend Paul Calgiuri to talk about the growth of the UPSL and his involvement in the league.
In this episode of Sportly, host Kavitha Davidson breaks down the moment that changed American soccer forever: Paul Caligiuri's "Shot Heard' Round the World." This iconic goal, which ended the U.S. men's soccer team's forty-year World Cup drought, highlights a much larger story—the powerful influence of immigrant players and their families on American soccer. From their unique skills and global experience to their resilience and passion, foreign-born players have been the backbone of the sport's rise in the U.S. Kavitha explores what makes America's soccer scene so appealing to immigrant athletes, the cultural impact they bring, and how they've shaped the game we know today. John Harkes played a critical role in the evolution of the US Men's National Team in the late 80s and early 90s. A product of Kearny, New Jersey, Harkes had an outstanding college career at the University of Virginia, then broke into the USMNT scene. At the same time, he became the first American to truly emerge as an outstanding contributor in England, where he played for Sheffield Wednesday. Harkes was on the field for Paul Caligiuri's "Shot Heard 'Round the World" and then played in both the 1990 and 1994 World Cups. He went on to coach and is currently Technical Director at McLearn Youth Soccer in Virginia. The USMNT legend joined us to talk about growing up in Kearny, playing in England when no one could really track his exploits, and so much more. Founding Futbol is a year-long exploration of the critical moments that have led to soccer's emerging popularity in America. Subscribe to the Founding Football Feed to get episodes twice weekly! Paul Caligiuri's iconic 1989 goal that sent the USMNT back to its first World Cup since 1950 is one of the most celebrated moments in the history of American soccer. It's been dubbed the "Shot Heard 'Round the World" and became the central plot point of the CBS sports / Paramount + documentary, "The Billion Dollar Goal." It's impossible to tell the story of soccer's rise in this country without exploring that storied event. As part of our study of the Caligiuri goal, we explore the context of the USMNT leading up to the World Cup qualifiers, and the team's subsequent performance in the 1990 World Cup in Italy. Brian Bliss joins us to talk about his involvement in the goal -- it began on his throw-in -- and his journey as part of the program. In 1988, FIFA awarded the United States hosting rights for the 1994 World Cup. The US Men's National Team appearance in the 1990 World Cup in Italy, thanks to Paul Caligiuri's famous goal in the qualifiers, legitimized America's presence in the tournament. And, when 1994 came along, an emerging community of soccer fans was ready to capitalize on the unique opportunity to see the world's best players compete on domestic soil. The result was the most successful World Cup in the tournament's history, both in terms of fan attendance and revenue generation. It was so successful, in fact, that the 94 World Cup attendance records still stand. Combined with a strong showing from the USMNT, the marketing and promotion around the event launched soccer to new heights in the United States. Sports historian and author Andrei Markovits was there. He joined Founding Futbol to talk about his memories of the World Cup, its impact on the sport in America and the lasting legacy it left on the growth of soccer. On November 19, 1989 the US Men's National Team travel to Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago with a chance to qualify for its first World Cup since 1950. In the 32nd minute, Paul Caligiuri scored the game's first goal on a long, dipping, left-footed strike from distance that ultimately became the game winner. With a one-goal lead, the team needed to remain defensively stout. Paul Krumpe was one of the team's starting defenders, then in the 61st minute John Stollmeyer replaced him to help see out the win. Both joined us for a double episode of Extra Time. Just like that game, Kurmpe starts the episode and Stolly closes it out. They bring amazing and different perspectives on what it was like to participate in that historic game, and even provide insight on that time in US Soccer. Founding Futbol is a year-long exploration of the critical moments that have led to soccer's emerging popularity in America. Extra Time is an additional weekly episode that shares reactions and reflections from the chapters, and brings additional guests into the fold. Founding Futbol is a year-long exploration of the critical moments that have led to football's emerging popularity in America. When ESPN began broadcasting in 1979, no one knew if a 24-hour sports cable station would work. The concept was new. The format was new. And there was no data to suggest the American public would watch. But ESPN not only worked, it changed the sports culture globally by giving airtime to sports that previously went unbroadcast and by creating a highlight culture. Soccer benefited from these factors – as ESPN broadcast the Major Indoor Soccer League, bringing fans to the game in new and interesting ways. It also gave sports fans distilled key moments from various soccer matches exposing more people to the beautiful game. JP Dellacamera has broadcast 17 World Cups, making him the voice of soccer for many Americans. He joined the show to discuss the start of his career at ESPN and how the game has evolved with the cable sports networks over the decades. Leading up to the summer Olympics in Paris, Founding Futbol is a great place to learn the history of both the men's and women's US national teams competing in the tournament. We've already brought you several episodes on our feed that delve into the emergence of the programs -- like the 1989 US Men's National Team that qualified for its first World Cup in 40 years on the back of Paul Caligiuri's famous goal. And the 1991 US Women's National Team that won the first Women's World Cup. There are four specific episodes that Founding Futbol will release in the build up to the summer games, starting at the end of July, that advance that story even further, with interviews from US Soccer legends. On June 17, Chapter 15 on the 1994 World Cup will be released. On June 24, Chapter 16 on Alexi Lalas will be released. That episode features an interview with Alexi. We will have a snippet of that show on the Arsenal Vision Pod before releasing it on our main feed as well. On July 8, Chapter 18 on the beginning MLS will be released. That episode features an interview with MLS legend Jeff Agoos. We will have a snippet of that show on the Arsenal Vision Pod before the episode comes out. On July 15, Chapter 19 on the 1996 Olympics will be released. That episodes features an interview with the USWNT all-time caps leader, Kristine Lilly. We will have a snippet of that show on the Arsenal Vision Pod before releasing it on our main feed as well. For those of you that haven't jumped into Founding Futbol yet, there's also a second episode every week called Extra Time. It features an interview with someone connected to the core topic of the week. On July 18, Shannon Mac Millian, who scored one of the most famous goals in US Soccer history at the 96 Olympics, joins Extra Time. And host Kent Malmros is working on bringing additional Extra Time guests. Founding Futbol is a great place to find content that will get you connected to and excited for the US soccer team's journey in the olympics. [We near the end of our Thanksgiving leftovers this week with a June 2018 archive re-release favorite featuring US Soccer Hall of Fame broadcaster JP Dellacamera - currently in Qatar covering this year's FIFA World Cup for Fox Sports!] Fox Sports soccer play-by-play broadcaster extraordinaire JP Dellacamera joins the podcast this week to discuss a pioneering career in sports announcing spanning over 30 years – including calling this year's 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia – his ninth consecutive men's quadrennial assignment since Mexico '86. Widely acknowledged as the original voice of US Soccer, Dellacamera's calls have become synonymous with some of modern-day American soccer's most indelible moments – including his accounts of the US Women's National Team's dramatic penalty kick shootout victory over China in the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup, and Paul Caligiuri's historic “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” against Trinidad & Tobago in the final game of 1989 CONCACAF qualifying that punched the US Men's National Team's ticket for Italy '90 – ending a 40-year World Cup finals drought, and reorienting the sport's trajectory in the ‘States for decades to come. The road to broadcasting global soccer's marquee events has by no means been a straight and narrow one, however, and we (of course) chat with Dellacamera about some of the more memorable “forgotten” stops made along the way, including: Talking his way into his professional debut calling local TV games for the 1978 NASL expansion Detroit Express; Handling radio play-by-play for the American Soccer League's ALPO dog food-sponsored Pennsylvania Stoners; Parlaying years of minor league hockey broadcast experience into lead announcing duties for indoor soccer's Pittsburgh Spirit of the fledgling MISL; Cementing his stature as the voice of US women's soccer as the play-by-play lead for the 2001 launch of the WUSA; and Returning to his first love of pro hockey – finally at the NHL level – with the short-lived Atlanta Thrashers.
