On his weekly Saturday Conversations podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey welcomes for Penguins forward and current broadcaster Colby Armstrong to talk NHL trade deadlines past and present. What does Colby remember from being traded to the Atlanta Thrashers in a 2008 blockbuster that brought Marian Hossa and Pascal Dupuis back to Pittsburgh? What were Sidney Crosby's feelings about the deal, given his close relationship with Colby? What are some funny stories he has from that period in Penguins history, when Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and Marc-Andre Fleury were leading a resurgence? And what makes a trade so awkward for a player? Our duo tackles those questions as well as the path that led Colby into broadcasting; his relationship with Crosby as a source; the wild trade rumors swirling around Crosby and the Colorado Avalanche; and an array of current Penguins topics. What does GM Kyle Dubas need to do to get the franchise back on track? And how much can a slew of upcoming NHL draft picks help the franchise?

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 12, 2024 41:55

The Electric Light Orchestra, also known as E.L.O., was formed in Birmingham in 1970 by multi-instrumentalists Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood, and by percussionist Bev Bevan.  Wood was in a band called the Move in 1968 and had the idea of a new band which would feature classical instruments more prominently than the guitars, hoping to "pick up where the Beatles left off."  He recruited Lynne to the cause in 1970.  Wood would leave the band in 1972 at which point Lynne would be the leader of the band, producing and arranging all the albums and writing most of the songs.Face the Music was ELO's fifth studio album, and the one which would be their real worldwide breakthrough.  The album moved away from the large-scale orchestral pieces and contained more single-friendly material.  It would be the first ELO album to go Platinum.   The band at the time consisted of multi-instrumentalist and creative heart Jeff Lynne, Bev Bevan on percussion, Richard Tandy on keyboard, Kelly Groucutt on bass and vocals, Mik Kaminski on violin, Hugh McDowell on cello, and Melvyn Gale on cello.  Louis Clark was the conductor of the orchestra and did some of the orchestral and choral arrangements along with Lynne and Tandy. We're catching ELO on their way up with this album.  The band would hit the pinnacle of their success with 1977's double album "Out of the Blue."  In 1986 Lynne would leave the group to pursue other projects, while Bevan would form the group "ELO, part II," eventually renamed "The Orchestra."  Lynne would reform the group as Jeff Lynne's ELO  along with Richard Tandy in 2014.Bruce presents this symphonic rock album in this week's podcast. Fire On HighThe opening track is a largely instrumental piece.  Drummer Bev Bevan is vocalizing the backward lyrics, "The music is reversible but time is not.  Turn back, turn back, turn back, turn back!"  Lynne had received criticism from some fundamentalist groups about backward masking on the El Dorado album, and this is his joking response.  The song's mix of symphony with rock and roll was played at home games for the Atlanta Thrashers hockey team.Strange MagicThis was the second single from the album and features keyboardist Richard Tandy playing the guitar part while Lynne plays a 12-string acoustic fed through a phase shifter.  It went to number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100.NightriderWhile this is a deeper cut, it actually was released as a single and just didn't chart.  Bassist Kelly Groucutt takes turns with Jeff Lynne to provide lead vocals on this song.  The title was also the title of Lynne's first major band prior to forming ELO. Evil WomanThis song about a bad woman is the first single and the big hit off the album.  As seems common with many hit singles, it was originally written as a filler track to give the album a longer runtime with no thought to its being a hit.  Lynne wrote it in about 30 minutes.  It went to number 10 on both the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK singles charts. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To) (from the motion picture "Mahogany")Diana Ross stars in this film about a woman torn between a life in Rome as a fashion designer and life in Chicago with the man she loves.  Ross sane the theme as well. STAFF PICKS:Fool for the City by FoghatWayne launches the staff picks with this rocking tribute to the city from the Platinum-selling album of the same name.  "I'm ready for the city, air pollution, here I come."  The album cover features the drummer fishing in a manhole in New York City.  New York City policemen on patrol stopped at the scene and jokingly asked if they had a fishing license.  Foghat came out of the remnants of a group called Savoy Brown. They Just Can't Stop It (Games People Play)  by The SpinnersRob features a crossover success that hit the number 1 spot on the US Hot Soul Singles chart and number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The song was recorded at Philadelphia's Signa Sound Studios, and the female vocals are provided by the studio backing vocal group called Sweethearts of Sigma - Carla Benson, Evette Benton, and Barbara Ingram.  Evette Benton is the lead female voice on the song.Lyin' Eyes by the EaglesCalifornia country is the focus of Lynch's staff pick.  Lyin' Eyes appeared on the Eagles' 1975 album "One of These Nights," and was written by Henley and Frey.  Don Henley took lead vocal duties on this one.  It went to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won a Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.  The origin of the song was observing young attractive women in Hollywood dating older rich guys.Bad Blood by Neil SedakaBruce brings us a lost number 1 hit.  Sedaka was better known for his work in the 1950's and early 60's, but had a revival during the mid-70's.  This song about a woman who is trouble also features an uncredited vocal by Elton John.  Sedaka sings and plays piano on this song, while David Foster provides the keyboard work. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Will o' the Wisp by Leon RussellWe finish off with a brief piano instrumental from singer-songwriter Leon Russell's album of the same name. Valdosta State University history professor (and Episode 244 guest) Tom Aiello ("Dixieball: Race and Professional Basketball in the Deep South") returns after a two-year absence - for an enlightening look at the curious cultural history of the city of Atlanta's awkward relationship with professional hockey. In his new book "White Ice: Race and the Making of Atlanta Hockey," Aiello interestingly juxtaposes the National Hockey League's aggressive expansion in the late 1960s/early 1970s (including a new WHA-hastened Flames franchise in 1972), against the city's de facto status as the "capital of the Deep South" - and its population's rapidly changing racial and socio-economic contours. To wit: For its own part, Atlanta had been watching as White residents left the city for the suburbs over the course of the 1960s. As the turn of the decade approached, city leadership was searching for ways to mitigate white flight and bring residents of the surrounding suburbs back to the city center. So when a stereotypically White sport came to the Deep South in 1971 in the form of the Flames, ownership saw a new opportunity to appeal to White audiences.  But the challenge would be selling a game that was foreign to most of Atlanta's longtime sports fans.   Against that backdrop, of course, the Flames (1972-80) lasted but only eight seasons - and its NHL successor Atlanta Thrashers (1999-2011) did not fare much better in the face of similar and arguably even more pronounced circumstances.   And yet, the "dream" of another franchise lives on. Might Atlanta get a third chance to finally make pro hockey stick?  What's changed (and hasn't) in the region's demographic landscape and economic calculus?     Listen in and find out!   + + +   SPONSOR THANKS: Royal Retros (promo code: SEATS):  https://www.royalretros.com/?aff=2   BUY/READ EARLY & OFTEN: White Ice: Race and the Making of Atlanta Hockey (2024): https://amzn.to/3vFQw5z   FIND & FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram (+ Threads): https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable

Kirbyson's accounts of the Jets' early years in the revolutionary World Hockey Association from 1972-79 ("The Hot Line: How the Legendary Trio of Hull, Hedberg and Nilsson Transformed Hockey and Led the Winnipeg Jets to Greatness"), and the club's original 17 seasons in the National Hockey League from 1979-96 ("Broken Ribs and Popcorn: How the Winnipeg Jets became the best team in the NHL's most offensive era to not win the Stanley Cup"), are must-reads for fans of either incarnation of the original team - and even for curious Arizona Coyotes or current-generation Jets (née Atlanta Thrashers) followers befuddled by the NHL's "official" history.    + + +   SPONSOR THANKS: DraftKings Sportsbook (promo code: GOODSEATS): https://myaccount.draftkings.com/login      BUY/READ EARLY & OFTEN: The Hot Line: How the Legendary Trio of Hul, Hedberg and Nilsson Transformed Hockey and Led the Winnipeg Jets to Greatness (2016): https://amzn.to/3tbR5me Broken Ribs and Popcorn: How the Winnipeg Jets became the best team in the NHL's most offensive era to not win the Stanley Cup (2021): https://www.amazon.ca/Broken-Ribs-Popcorn-Winnipeg-offensive/dp/1772803219/   FIND & FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram (+ Threads): https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable

Brandon was a town he never heard of.  The WHL was a league he knew nothing about. And he never spoke a word of english. But he was told he might be able to get drafted if he went.So he did.And the Calgary Flames selected him in the 7th Round of the 1994 Entry draft.Ladislav went on to play over 180 games in the NHL with the Calgary Flames, Toronto Maple Leafs, Anahiem Ducks, Atlanta Thrashers and the Detroit Red Wings. Kohn had an impressive 18 year professional career.Enjoy my conversation with Ladislav Kohn.

Episode 25 kicks off with the very gentlemanly Cale Maker and his decision to… decline a penalty!? You don't see that everyday!  Headlines features a discussion on the NHL potentially following the NBA's lead and updating trophy names with more modern examples of excellence in each category. Dregs says it's a matter of time before they do, and there is plenty to debate on which legends of the game would have to honour of having a trophy named after them. Would it be too soon to name the Selke after Patrice Bergeron? Is there one trophy that should remain untouchable for now? Plus, Patrick Roy and Dominik Hasek are compared as Ray names his Vezina successor. Kris Abbott stops by to recap a wild World Cup Final, and the ‘immaculate deuce' that changed everything for his betting fortunes. Ironically, the snow kept Ray from gloating about his victory in the NFL's snow game this weekend.  Every week, your questions are answered on Ask Ray & Dregs, and now merch prizes are up for grabs! [We near the end of our Thanksgiving leftovers this week with a June 2018 archive re-release favorite featuring US Soccer Hall of Fame broadcaster JP Dellacamera - currently in Qatar covering this year's FIFA World Cup for Fox Sports!] Fox Sports soccer play-by-play broadcaster extraordinaire JP Dellacamera joins the podcast this week to discuss a pioneering career in sports announcing spanning over 30 years – including calling this year's 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia – his ninth consecutive men's quadrennial assignment since Mexico '86. Widely acknowledged as the original voice of US Soccer, Dellacamera's calls have become synonymous with some of modern-day American soccer's most indelible moments – including his accounts of the US Women's National Team's dramatic penalty kick shootout victory over China in the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup, and Paul Caligiuri's historic “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” against Trinidad & Tobago in the final game of 1989 CONCACAF qualifying that punched the US Men's National Team's ticket for Italy '90 – ending a 40-year World Cup finals drought, and reorienting the sport's trajectory in the ‘States for decades to come. The road to broadcasting global soccer's marquee events has by no means been a straight and narrow one, however, and we (of course) chat with Dellacamera about some of the more memorable “forgotten” stops made along the way, including: Talking his way into his professional debut calling local TV games for the 1978 NASL expansion Detroit Express; Handling radio play-by-play for the American Soccer League's ALPO dog food-sponsored Pennsylvania Stoners; Parlaying years of minor league hockey broadcast experience into lead announcing duties for indoor soccer's Pittsburgh Spirit of the fledgling MISL; Cementing his stature as the voice of US women's soccer as the play-by-play lead for the 2001 launch of the WUSA; and  Returning to his first love of pro hockey – finally at the NHL level – with the short-lived Atlanta Thrashers.

Today's episode, episode #277, is a little bit different. I have interviewed 276 different people, and over that span I've often contemplated and though, “You know who I would love to have on here? My dad.” He's one of the most interesting people I've ever been around, and I've had a front row seat to witness, to him questions, to observe, to notice. I was hesitant to have my dad on as a guest because I like to ask questions that other people don't necessarily ask. And certainly, I've had friends on the podcast, people I care deeply about, but I knew with my dad it would be extremely personal. I wanted to ask him questions that I don't always get to ask him. Even though there's space for us in our relationship to ask questions, we don't always sit for an hour and a half and learn with each other. We don't always sit and ask what's really on our mind and share in a vulnerable way, and we have a very healthy relationship. There was some fear for me in bringing my dad into this community, bringing my dad into my world, even though I've always been part of his. I've referenced my dad a ton in conversations with others. My dad is now 72 years old. I didn't want to wait any longer to ask him some questions I was really curious about and to share him. He's one of the most wonderful people I've ever been around. He's one of the most intentional performers I've ever been around. And so, I felt inspired, obligated, and excited to go deeper with him and to be willing to share a side to him that others don't know. We uncovered and talked about some things that we hadn't ever talked about. Most of us don't ask the questions that we want to ask to the people that are closest to us. For me, that was pretty jaw-dropping that there were parts of this conversation that we hadn't discussed in detail previously. For you, as you're listening to this conversation, I hope you take that away more than anything else. I hope this conversation inspires you. I hope it challenges you to sit down with the people that you love and just be really curious and listen without judgment. My dad, Bruce Levenson, became more well-known when he bought into the Atlanta Hawks and the Atlanta Thrashers. Before that, he was extremely successful in the business world. He co-founded a company called United Communications Group. They acquired a lot of companies along the way, including a company called Tech Target which ended up going public and is still a publicly traded company. There was a company called Gas Buddy they acquired at one point as well. My dad and his co-founder Ed are journalists. That's their trade, that's what they came into the business world doing. So, they really believed in creating exceptional content. They were a business-too-business newsletter, and they would sell their content to other companies. My dad also went to law school at night as he was working extremely hard. My dad does not mind working hard, he actually enjoys it. Philanthropically, he has been extremely active for as long as I can remember. He and my mom formed the Do Good Institute at the University of Maryland, which aims to educate and train the next generation of non-profit leaders and people in the social sector who are changing our world in really amazing ways. Hope you enjoy this unique episode. Here are some impactful quotes from my dad from the episode: “When you stop growing, you start dying. I have no interest in dying” (16:15). “I'd rather bet for myself than against myself” (16:45).“I'll keep walking fast for as long as I can” (16:50). “Always finding time for family, time to do things other than working, was always a priority” (18:10). “I don't ever remember coming home tired from work. I loved work” (22:15). “I love to build in so many different ways… and part of the love of that is being part of a team” (23:15). “I still take on too much” (25:15). “I added an element of intelligent impatience” (31:50). “I would hope they would describe me as someone who is stimulating to be at the table with” (33:30). “The partnerships that did work all had one thing in common: there was this courtship where mutual respect and trust was built, we didn't jump into it” (36:00). “When you're walking fast, sometimes you walk right past that communication” (38:50). “For me, it was always about being my own boss” (44:00). “Anybody who says money doesn't buy you happiness isn't spending their money wisely” (44:30). “Don't do it alone. I really believe in the power of partnerships” (45:15). “I want to set an example for my community” (46:05). “There's room for error if you're overcommunicating and being overly assertive” (50:00). “I care that if someone meets me in passing and googles me, they may read something about me that makes them think less of me” (55:00). “There were a lot of similarities between the sports business and my business” (1:06:30). “The glass is always 80% full for me” (1:11:45). “I'm not superman. I don't have answers for everything. Depression is something very real and very debilitating, you have to work really hard to work your way out of it” (1:15:55). “It's hard for me to call it a failure because I tried my hardest and controlled what I could control” (1:24:05). “I'm the luckiest guy in the world” (1:28:10).   Thank you so much to my dad for coming on the podcast! I wrote a book called “Shift Your Mind” that was released in October of 2020, and you can order it on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. The Capitals who struggled with depth scoring earlier in the season got plenty of depth scoring tonight. The Capitals have also seen more consistent netminding as well. Ilya Samsonov has been playing great as of late. Could he be emerging as the number one goalie for the Capitals? Sixteen of Washington's 18 forwards recorded a point against Philadelphia. It marks the fifth instance in franchise history the Capitals have had 16 players record a point in the same game (most recently: Jan. 9, 2010 vs. the Atlanta Thrashers). The Capitals extend their win streak to four games. During the streak, which began on April 6 against Tampa Bay, Washington has outscored its opponents 23-10. With three assists in the third period, Schultz tied Nick Jensen (3a on March 8 against the Calgary Flames) and John Carlson (1g, 2a on March 6 against the Tampa Bay Lightning) for the most points in a period this season by a Capital. @dancaps218 @lockedonecaps Listen on all platforms: https://linktr.ee/locapitals?utm_source=linktree_profile_share<sid=24ee2d3d-2711-4999-a39a-bbd030115292 Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Letterkenny Live at the Fox Theatre, Atlanta Welcome to The Guys Review, where we review media, products and experiences.   **READ APPLE REVIEWS/Fan Mail**Mention Twitter DM group - like pinned tweet @The_GuysReviewRead emails theguysreviewpod@gmail.comTwitter Poll Fox Theatre The 4,665 seat theatre was built in 1929 as part of a as part of a large Shrine Temple, but was ultimately developed into a lavish movie theatre. The principal architect of the project was Olivier Vinour of the firm Marye, Alger and Vinour. The design is supposed to replicate an Arabian courtyard, complete with 96 flickering lights and clouds that move across the ceiling. There is an Egyptian Ballroom that is designed after a temple for Ramses II at Karnak while the mezzanine Ladies Lounge features a replica of the throne chair of King Tut and makeup tables that feature tiny Sphinxes. The theater opened on December 25, 1929, just two months after the stock market crash. Originally build for the shriners, when the project went over budget, they leased the building to William Fox, a movie mogul who was building theaters around the country at the time. The theatre closed December, 1932, 125 weeks after it opened due to the Shriners defaulting on the mortgage and Fox going bankrupt. It was purchased by Paramount Pictures and Lucas & Jenkins, a Georgia company that owned a hundred theatres. In the 1940's the Fox because one of the most popular locations, with the Egyptian room drawing big bands and country and western swing bands of the era. It was notable for being the only club in Atlanta at the time that would allow both black and white patrons. Though still segregated, with a seperate entrance that still remains today at the back of the theatre for historical purposes. The Fox would fully integrate in 1962 In the 70's there was a decline in the theatre attendance, and was almost sold to AT&T with plans to tear it down and put a parking deck in its place, but was ultimately subverted by a group and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in May 1974. Celebrities that assisted saving the Fox include Liberace and Lynyrd Skynyrd (recording their first live album there and debuting guitarist Ed King's replacement, Steve Gaines, to the world). The U.S. Department of the Interior subsequently named the Fox a National Historic Landmark on May 26, 1976, citing its architectural uniqueness. Currently, the Fox is the only remaining movie palace in Atlanta, being run by the non-profit group, Atlanta Landmarks, Inc. An estimated 750,000 people visit the Fox every year. The venue was the site of Prince's final performance, held one week before his death on April 21, 2016. Notable acts who have played the Fox are Elvis, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Marley, Pearl Jam, the Allman Brothers, Ray Charles, James Brown, B-52s, A fun bit of trivia... When the shriners built the theatre, they built a 3,640 sq/ft office space in the theatre that was converted into an apartment that Joe Patten, the technical director from 1974 to 2004, occupied with a rent free lease for life. Patten died in 2016. Since then, the space has been unoccupied, but there is a passageway leads from the bedroom to a former spotlight platform at the top of the auditorium. Thoughts and impressions of the Fox theatre? Would you visit again? Special thanks to Megan George and Aly Grubb for the media tickets they gave us, they were fantastic seats.  Letterkenny Live Produced by New Metric media Staring:Jared KeesoNathan DalesK. Trevor WilsonMichelle MylettMark ForwardTyler JohnstonDylan PlayfairAndrew HerrEvan Stern Letterkenny live was started back in 2018, with only Jared Keeso, Nathan Dales, K. Trevor Wilson, and Mark Forward. Michelle Mylett joined in 2019, and Johnston, Playfair, Herr and Stern joining 2020. Though, the 2020 tour was, of course, postponed indefinitely in March. The dates were not announced to be rescheduled on July 19, 2021. Based on the show of the same name, the stage performance consists of some old, reworked, and new sketches with the cast. Including a set of stand up by Mark Forward and K. Trevor Wilson... and as themselves, not in costume. Which is funny because they reference the actors may resemble the characters. Letterkenny, the tv show, debuted on Crave tv in canada in Feburary 2015, which was based on the YouTube channel Keeso developed called Letterkenny Problems. It arrived in the US in July 2018 on Hulu who now owns exclusive distribution rights in the US. Its been nominated and won numerous Canadian screen awards, including best comedy series, best directing for Jacob Tierney (who directs all the episodes of Letterkenny), Best Lead Actor for Jared Keeso, even technical awards like best editing and best photography for the Sleepover episode. Back to Letterkenny live, Mark Forward, as Coach, welcomed everyone to the show and then informed us that due to an injury, Taylor Johnston who plays Stewart will not be performing that night... Which prompts some boos, and I yelled that it's fucking embarrassing... Which Coach agreed with. Roald then comes on stage and addresses the crowd, being weird and funny, then the hicks start coming on stage. Staring with Squirrely Dan, followed by Katy, then Dary, finally Wayne enters to thunderous applause. They do some back and forth, and crowd interaction with How're ya now? The crowd yells back, Good'n you?! It was fun. They exit the stage and Reily and Jonesy come on and do a bit talking about hockey, referencing the Atlanta Thrashers hockey team, when we hear Shoresy start chirping them from the toilet as he did in the show... But Shorseys chips also work in local attractions and themes, like coke and hot chicken. This goes for a bit, as usual, but its very engaging and works well. I feel there were more sketches, just a little cross over stuff. Roald then introduces Mark Forward to do a small set of stand up. His humor is very misdirectional, like when he walks on stage, he says things like, "yes, thank you, I'm very good." His set was funny, but I honestly don't remember much from it, but he ended it was a joke/song that he admitted before he started that it was "stupid" Xavier McCutchins, who named bears until the end. After Mark finished, another hick skit ened with Coach telling the hicks people want to see the classics. They started updating the crowd on what everyone else in Letterkenny is upto, also giving the crowd a sneak peek to season 11, and showing a cold open to an episode. They moved to an intermission, during which we were able to move everyone from our original seats to about 7 rows back, right in the center. It was awesome. Going into the second half, they continue giving humorous updates to other characters in letterkenny, as well as showing a preview for Shoresy, and a blooper reel for S10. Followed by K. Trevor Wilson coming on and doing a stand up set. His standup is totally different from Mark Forward, and Squirrely Dans character. His long form, informal storytelling type of jokes were a change of pace. We got another skit of Reilly and Jonesy being chirped by Shoresy, again throwing in references to Atlanta like the Varsity and chili hotdogs. And coach drunkenly talking about barb. The final skit brought back one of the best bits from the show, when the whole cast comes on stage making porn sounds, yes yes yes yes yesing and "aw fuck, aw fuck." The lights go out, the cast had a group hug, as they did their curtain call, they introduced themselves and each said something they loved about Atlanta. Two final bows, and they exit stage right. Lights up, and the show is over. Thoughts on the show?
