Last week, the Holocaust-denying, white nationalist influencer Nick Fuentes sat down with former Fox News host turned podcaster Tucker Carlson on The Tucker Carlson Show, where the two discussed Fuentes's trajectory, the evolution of his “America First” ideology, and the ways his rejection of the neoconservative common sense on Israel put him at odds with parts of the right-wing establishment. For many, Carlson's seeming embrace of Fuentes on his popular show signaled a shift, a recognition that what was once taboo on the right has arrived in the mainstream. Cementing the sense of a sea change, Kevin Roberts, president of the Heritage Foundation, the right-wing think tank that has crafted many of Donald Trump's most destructive policies, refused to disavow or scold Carlson, saying in a video that criticism of Israel is not antisemitism. He asserted that Americans should support Israel as long as Israel's action are in American interests—and that there is no obligation to support Israel if they are not. (Since this taping, he has had to walk back this statement, particularly the use of the phrase “venomous coalition” to describe those trying to “cancel” Carlson over the interview with Fuentes.) That same week, far-right talk show host Candace Owens, dismissed from her Daily Wire post over antisemitism, sat down with left-wing former academic and Palestine advocate Norman Finkelstein. In a conversation laced with Owens's many antisemitic conspiracy theories, they attempted to find common ground. In this episode of On the Nose, Jewish Currents editor-in-chief Arielle Angel and publisher Daniel May are joined by Ben Lorber, researcher of antisemitism and white nationalism, and Andrew Marantz, a New Yorker writer who profiled Carlson last year. They discussed the uncomfortable resonances between right and left anti-Zionism in this moment, and the even more disturbing antisemitic, white and Christian nationalist divergences. Thanks to Jesse Brenneman for producing and to Nathan Salsburg for the use of his song “VIII (All That Were Calculated Have Passed).”Articles and Media Mentioned and Further ReadingJD Vance is asked about American support for Israel at a Turning Point USA event“The Tucker Carlson Road Show,” Andrew Marantz, The New Yorker“Nick Fuentes Has Officially Breached the MAGA Gates,” Ben Lorber, The NationTranscript forthcoming.
This is a crossover episode with the Spring Street Passive House education and advocacy series.Welcome to a pivotal conversation on the future of our built world. The concrete industry, indispensable for modern infrastructure, is facing an urgent mandate: reconcile its foundational role (pun) with its role as a source of environmental pollution. The scale of the emissions are staggering - if global concrete manufacturing were a country it would be the 3rd largest emitter, behind only China and the US (!). The good news is that with this a motivation the global concrete industry is now rethinking its entire lifecycle. In this episode, host Kristof sits down with John Mead, one of the founders of Solid Carbon to talk about efforts to transform concrete from a carbon emitter into a "net carbon sink. By converting waste carbon materials, wood being one, into a mass of solid carbon through pyrolysis and then using this carbon sink in a durable material through concrete we are making a huge impact in an industry that needs to make some powerful shifts in the years ahead.John MeadJohn Mead is an entrepreneur with 20 years leading companies focused on sustainable construction. He has a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Oregon State University, and an MBA from George Fox University. He is CEO of Solid Carbon Inc., an Oregon company specializing in the commercialization of biochar-based ingredients for the ready mixed concrete industry. Solid Carbon's mission is to transform the concrete industry into a climate solution with climate smart concrete solutions to sequester carbon in the built environment. When not working on climate-friendly construction businesses he can be found coaching high school rugby, camping in the Cascades, gardening and admiring historic and modern architecture.Solid Carbon LinkedInTeamHosted by Kristof IrwinEdited by Nico MignardiProduced by M. This throwback episode features Dr. John Burgess. I heard of his recent passing and thought it would be very appropriate to replay a spectacular interview I was privileged to have with him back in 2022. Do you have advice that you've heard that you use on almost every single procedure? I do. And it came from today's guest, Dr. John Burgess. Dr. Burgess is the assistant Dean for Clinical Research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham as well as Director of the Graduate Biomaterials Program and was recently featured on the main stage at the Spear Summit 2022. But I heard John at the Spring Vedder society meeting some years back and some of the things he said have stayed with me to this day. It was a true pleasure to get to talk with John about what he does, how materials research should be done and how dentists can be better at understanding materials. How does someone get in to biomaterials research? Clinical research at LSU How to find unbiased information...how do we evaluate literature? Is the research measuring what they think it's measuring? Bevels on posterior composites? How do we test this? (spoiler alert: don't bevel occlusal margins) The best material is "abuse tolerant." How do patients get screened for clinical research? NCCLs (noncarious cervical lesions) and the controversy surrounding them New chemistry Read the instructions more often than you think you should! "Dentists don't read" Manufacturers take their instructions very seriously...you should, too. Did you know that nearly 10 percent of all CO2 emissions come from the creation of cement alone? That's more than from all aviation! We rarely think about cement despite the fact that our society would literally collapse without it. Roads, bridges, buildings, and more all depend on this material that's so ubiquitous we barely even notice it. In fact, concrete is by far the heaviest part of humanity's footprint on the planet, and today all the materials we've built with it are heavier than the weight of all living beings on the earth. In other words, the carbon intensity of cement production is a big deal. In this episode, we talk with Sublime Systems co-founder Leah Ellis about her effort to decarbonize cement production for which she's already raised $50 million. As you'll hear, rather than heating up limestone to hellish temperatures to make cement—the currently dominant method—Sublime harnesses the power of electro-chemistry to convert calcium-bearing rocks into cement at room temperature, thereby slashing emissions. Already Sublime has built a $10 million pilot plant demonstrating the viability of its technology and it plans to make its commercial debut within 2023. Next step: build a full scale commercial factory that can really start making the dent in the climate crisis that Leah is seeking to make. Discussed in this episode The Romans were pretty good at making cement! Sublime Systems raised a $40 million Series A round in 2023 Patent applications from Sublime Systems CNBC on Leah's work with Sublime Systems More about Leah Ellis Leah Ellis is the CEO and co-founder of Sublime Systems, a company that aims to revolutionize cement production through its breakthrough low-carbon process. With a pilot plant in Somerville, Massachusetts capable of producing 100 tons of decarbonized cement annually, Sublime recently secured a $40 million series A funding to drive growth. Leah and her co-founder, Yet-Ming Chiang, developed the technology while she was an NSERC/Banting Postdoctoral Fellow at the MIT Department of Materials Science and Engineering. Leah holds a PhD in chemistry from Dalhousie University, where she worked with Professor Jeff Dahn on lithium-ion battery optimization in partnership with 3M and Tesla. Leah was named among MIT Technology Review's 35 Innovators under 35 and is among the World Economic Forum's Technology Pioneers.
