Can your body be stuck in trauma or grief? In this mini episode, Dr. Aimie is answering a listener's question about why her physical symptoms are still bothering her a year after a loved one's death. She dives into why the normal approach to self care won't work and how creating safety can allow the trauma and grief to move through the body instead of staying stuck. Dr. Aimie goes into the biology behind why movement is needed for overwhelming grief and trauma, building on her conversation with Paul Denniston from episode 117. She shares more on why “emotions need motion” and how movement practices work on a physiological level to release the trauma and grief trapped in the body. You'll hear more about: How grief pushes the body from a stress response into a trauma response The three coping strategies triggered by grief Where grief and trauma get stored physically within the body The action steps you can start taking today to move through your own trauma or grief And more! If you feel like you're ready to let go of the trauma and grief that your body has been holding onto, then this episode is a must listen to! “Emotions need motion” - Paul Denniston Grief is an emotion that many of us try to avoid. But what happens when we don't let it out? In this episode, we explore how hidden grief can get stuck in the body, causing tight shoulders, stomach pain, and nonstop anxiety. Paul Denniston, founder of Grief Yoga, joins Dr. Aimie to explain that grief doesn't simply disappear when ignored. Instead, it hides in our muscles and body, making them hurt or feel uncomfortable. This conversation sheds light on how movement and even laughter can let the feelings out of our bodies in a safe way. We'll talk more about: How grief physically manifests in the body Why movement is essential for trauma healing How to recognize if what you're feeling is grief (even if it looks like anxiety or anger) The power in creating dedicated time and space for grief expression Learning how to sit with grief safely so it doesn't feel too overwhelming How laughter can be used to access deeper grief How practitioners can hold space for others' grief without becoming overwhelmed themselves The physical and emotional benefits of moving grief through the body And more! Whether you're a practitioner working with grief, someone supporting a loved one through loss, or navigating your own healing journey, this episode shares insights into transforming pain through movement practices that incorporate breath, sound, and embodied awareness. Life, grief and the holidays. During this time of the year is when many of us reflect on those we love who have passed and other changes in our lives where there's a loss. Be it a family member, friend, pet, or a career. We all grieve in various ways. In this episode, Adriana Avila M.S., LMFT explains what we feel and what we can do to help ourselves during challenging times. A must listen. Grief, what describes your grief? Grief is unique to each and one of us. There is no wrong or right way to grieve, and it can turn your world upside down. Grief needs to be acknowledged, expressed, and spoken about to bridge our sadness to joy, hopelessness to hope, and powerlessness to empowerment. I, like you, have felt the depth of grief, and when I thought I would never find hope again, day by day, hope started showing up in my life. My relationship with grief led me on a path, a journey, and a deeper connection with myself and others. Because of my life experiences, life led me on a professional grief journey. My trainings include: training with grief expert, David Kessler through his grief educator program, Paul Denniston, founder of grief yoga, trauma informed yoga, and I am also EMDR certified. I have learned to embrace my life journey, and I am humbled by those that I work with in my practice. I guide you to tap into your strengths, your resources, at your pace and your time, with kindness and compassion. I offer individual therapy, group therapy (pet loss groups, healing after loss groups and grief and trauma informed movement groups) and I also enjoy speaking at events. Part of my self-care/self-love is hiking, yoga, reading books, spending time with my dogs, and running. Feelings are funny things. We think we experience them mostly on a mental level. Our brain makes sense of the things we feel, and we label them – as in “I feel happy” or “I feel sad, or anxious, or angry.” But it is in our body that most of these feelings settle in the end. How do we get rid of those tight muscles caused by anger, or the weight on our shoulders, where grief holds us down? This is what we will tackle in today's episode. I had a chat with Paul Denniston, the founder of grief yoga and author of the book “Healing through Yoga: Transform Loss into Empowerment.” Paul and I met at a workshop years ago and his teachings touched something inside of me that I really wanted to share with you all here. Not only will we talk about how what we label as “negative” feelings settle in our bodies but we will also get a few hands-on tips on how to get things moving, releasing grief, pain, anxiety, fear, and anger that might have settled in our bodies for a long time.A big THANK YOU to Reiner Erlings for the music. www.reinererlings.com

On this very special episode of “The Language of Love,” Dr. Laura Berman sits down with her friend and yoga expert, Paul Denniston. Author of the groundbreaking book “Healing through Yoga,” Denniston has personally helped Dr. Berman through the grief of her son's death and showed her ways that yoga can help us to channel, heal, and process our deepest wounds. Denniston is the founder of Grief Yoga and has built his practice around the five fundamental keys of healing: Awareness, Expression, Connection, Surrender, and Evolution. With each of these stages, yoga positions and meditations can help you to further your spiritual practice and unblock energy channels so that you can live your most fulfilling, love-filled existence. In this episode, Denniston and Dr. Berman also talk about how anger can actually be one of our greatest teachers, and how tapping into our anger in a healthy way can help to free us from unwanted experiences and negative thought patterns. While we often run away from anger or try to deny its existence, Denniston and Dr. Berman both share how the expression of anger can be revolutionary for both personal and collective healing. “We all need to share our stories. Being heard is one of the most fundamental needs of human beings,” says Dr. Berman. “And that includes anger. Grief can bring up so much anger, and I have times where I just need to beat a cushion with a bat, or scream into a pillow, and paint angrily until I can move that emotion through me. We need to honor our anger and give it freedom to move and be expressed.” In his book, Denniston shares over 75 meditations and yoga positions that can help even beginner yogis tap into the connection between the body and the spirit. With yoga, we can train our bodies to be more resilient, more present, and more able to withstand the ebbs and flows of life.
Paul Denniston has taught the techniques and exercise of Grief Yoga to more than 4,000 therapists, counselors, and healthcare professionals. Paul explains how he came to use yoga, movement, breath, and sound to release pain and suffering and connect to love.

The experience of grief often hits us like a tsunami, and then ebbs and flows in waves that sometimes never subside. In this episode, Grief Yoga creator Paul Denniston shares his story of how he came to know - and use - grief as a powerful connection back to love. In his new book, Healing Through Yoga, Paul outlines the many ways in which we can use yoga and mindfulness to find the strength and courage to face and feel grief, and all of the emotions and sensations that accompany it. Listen now to learn Paul's most powerful tools for shining a light into the darkness of grief in order to ease back into gratitude and love.

He teaches Grief Yoga to bereavement groups; cancer support centers; groups whose loved ones died by suicide; Alzheimer's groups; healing after a breakup, divorce, or betrayal; and addiction groups. After the turmoil of the past couple of years we were grateful to talk to Paul, as these practices feel more necessary than ever. There are many types of yoga. Hatha, Vinyasa, Kundalini, Restorative and Laughter for example, and Paul Denniston uses elements from each in his Grief Yoga practice. Paul designed Grief Yoga to help with his challenging emotions of anxiety and grief by releasing pain to fund more empowerment and love. Paul feels that we can have physical pain in the body that is a manifestation of suppressed grief and thatbBecause everyone grieves differently, it appears in different areas of the body such as the back, neck, stomach, pelvis or chest.
Grief is as old as time—it can grip us in unexpected ways and places, immediately during and long after the event that caused it. And anything can contribute—death, divorce, loss, addiction, a diagnosis, mental health challenges—to the crushing and overwhelming feelings we're experiencing all too acutely these days. Too often we treat grief with half-solutions that only keep them at bay, not lead to real healing and recovery. Join yoga teacher and author Paul Denniston as we discuss how grief gets lodged in the body and how yoga, breath and ritual can help us work through our grief in healthy ways. This week, I am joined by my friend and very wise woman, Kathryn C. Robinson. Kathryn is a beautiful, mellifluous being, who (you will hear!) expresses her unique essence and earthbound medicine through use of her voice. She is a movement and body-based practitioner who focuses her expressions on helping others unearth and release trauma often experienced (or expressed) by grief in its many forms. She uses various therapies, such as yoga, kirtan, and meditation, and her musical background and talent employs her into a wider range of modalities, including sound and vocal expression to help regulate and discharge emotional material from an individual essence. During our conversation, she takes us on a bodily journey; one that brings us to moments of hallelujah in the body. Though we can experience great pain, she urges us to understand that anytime we access and move emotion from within, it is deep cause for praise and celebration, as the result is a piece of the Self being returned, renewed and restored. From our own grief stories, to the empowered agency we can create from the physiological awareness generated by body based practices, you will find yourself having more than just a moment with your own grief. Our time together in conversation is one of reckoning, recognition, and true release, leading to wider understanding of our own expression and power.
