Recently, the Supreme Court in the US announced that it will not hear the case of McKesson v. Doe. This decision leaves in place a lower court decision that effectively eliminated the right to organize a mass protest in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. The implication is that a protest organizer faces potential financial consequences if a single attendee at a mass protest commits an illegal act. Many Americans are worried about what this means for freedom of assembly in the US. So on today's episode we're going to be talking a little bit about this case but also more broadly look at whether the US and The West is experiencing democratic backsliding. We speak to Peter Beattie, Political Economist & Political Psychologist, Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).Image Credit: Shutterstock

Over the weekend we reported on the growing desire across the ditch for some kind of trans-Tasman travel bubble. It was one of the suggestions made by Peter Beattie, previously premier of the state of Queensland to help restart that state's economy, post covid. And given that Queensland...and also West Australia and come to that Northern Territories and the South have done a pretty good job of containing the virus, I'm attracted to the idea.It would probably be worth a little more to the Aussies than to us, so we'd be doing them a bit of a favour. On an annual basis visitor numbers are about 1.4 million each way but with Victoria definitely out and New South Wales a little iffy, the economic benefit of a bubble in pure numbers would probably favour the other side.So while it would definitely be good for business here to have the Ockers flying in, the downside is we'd probably be exposing ourselves to a slightly higher risk than them.Broadly speaking, I'm OK with a bubble, or I was, until I heard they're sending another batch of 501 deportees this week, 30 or so convicted crims. At a time when we're stretched to the max accommodating and quarantining our own people coming home, our supposed mates and allies across the ditch are still sending their bad guys here, on the flimsiest pretext.I don't want to re-litigate the deportation policy, it stinks, it always has, always will.In the overwhelming majority of cases, the people they send back haven't been New Zealanders for years. They grew up and became criminals in Australia. They have few, if any contacts here.Chris Hipkins was right when he told Mike Yardley yesterday it's the Australians dumping their problems on us.It's bad enough at any other time, but to be doing it right now...in the midst of this global crisis...is appalling. It's not the way a mate would behave...especially not a mate who's looking for a favour.
Today I spoke to Peter Beattie the former Premier of Queensland about his Smart State agenda and the benefits we are now reaping as a result of his hard work.

Australian Rugby League commission chair Peter Beattie has sounded out the Australian Olympic Committee as he considers a seachange in policy for the sport. The commission meets next week to discuss standing down players charged with serious offences, such as Jack de Belin who has pleaded not guilty to aggravated sexual assault. The Sydney Morning Herald reports Beattie has been in contact with AOC president John Coates, who cut swimmer Nick D'Arcy from the 2008 Olympic team after he was charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm. The league commission needs to determine whether they have the power to suspend players for such action, even though they are still to go before the courts. In the view of Fox NRL commentator Andrew Voss, de Belin needs to be dropped. He told Radio Sport Breakfast that is a difficult situation and should be a case-by-case basis, but things are clear here. "If I was in charge of the St George Dragons, I'm not letting Jack de Belin play. Surely I'd be saying to de Belin 'Mate, you're not playing for the club'."Voss says that damage has already been done, and de Belin needs to sort things out with his partner. He says if you look at what was presented in court, there are a lot bigger things than rugby.
