Wednesday Headlines: Australia’s requests to be exempt from US tariffs has been rejected as ‘Trumpcession’ fears continue, Ukraine says its ready to accept a US-proposed immediate ceasefire, the Queensland Premier has declared the worst of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred is over, and a boulder sitting at QLD school for 20 years found to have over 60 dinosaur prints. Deep Dive: The AFL, NRL, and Cricket Australia generate billions in revenue—but they don’t pay income tax. The reason? They’re classified not-for-profits and thus exempt. But with CEOs earning millions, massive betting deals, and revenue from pokies and broadcast rights, does this tax exemption pass the pub test? Critics argue it’s time to rethink the model, especially when it comes to our two football codes. So, should Australia’s biggest sporting codes be taxed like other businesses? In this episode of The Briefing, Chris Spyrou chats with CQU’s sports law expert Dr Matt Nichol to break it down.Further listening from the headlines: What a 'Trumpcession' could mean for Australia is out now on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. TONY BIRCH IS GOING TO DIEThe brilliant writer and academic Dr Tony Birch was born in inner-city Melbourne, into a large family of Aboriginal, West Indian and Irish descent. An altar boy and exceptional student at his local Catholic primary school, in adolescence, Birch went 'off the rails' as a teenager. He was expelled from two high schools for fighting and found trouble with the police for the same reason. Although somewhat adrift following his expulsions, he remained a voracious reader – once, when he was arrested by police, all they found when they patted him down was a copy of Camus' The Outsider, which remains his favourite book.Birch has written a great deal about death and grief, most recently in his 2021 short story collection Dark As Last Night, where he interrogates the death of his brother Wayne. Here, he reads from the collection whilst musing on his own legacy and eventual funeral plans.Birch has been publishing short stories and poetry regularly since the 1980s, although his first collection, Shadowboxing, only appeared in 2006. Since this, he has published four more collections of short stories and poetry (Father's Day [2009], The Promise [2014], Broken Teeth [2016], and Common People [2017] and two novels (Blood [2011] and Ghost River [2015]).Among his awards are the Scanlon Prize and the Prize for Indigenous Writing (Victorian Premier's Literary Awards). He has also been shortlisted for the Christina Stead Prize for Fiction (NSW Premier's Literary Awards), the Steele Rudd Award (with both the original Queensland Premier's Literary Awards and the later Queensland Literary Awards), and the Miles Franklin Literary Award. In 2015, he joined Victoria University as the first recipient of its Dr Bruce McGuinness Indigenous Research Fellowship. His role sits within the Moondani Balluk Academic Unit and is linked to the University's creative arts and writing programs. He has also taught creative writing at the University of Melbourne for many years. In 2022, he was appointed as the third Boisbouvier Chair in Australian Literature at the University of Melbourne, following Richard Flanagan and Alexis Wright.Tony Birch (IG @Tony_Birch_)Marieke Hardy Is Going To Die is a podcast made by Marieke Hardy (IG @marieke_hardy).You can follow at IG @GoingToDiePodMusic by Lord Fascinator (IG @lordfascinator)Produced by Darren Scarce (IG @Dazz26)Video edits by Andy Nedelkovski (IG @AndyNeds)Artwork by Lauren Egan (IG @heylaurenegan)Photography by Eamon Leggett (IG @anxietyoptions)With thanks to Amelia Chappelow (IG @ameliachappelow)Camilla McKewen (IG @CamillaLucyLucy)and Rhys Graham (IG @RhysJGraham)Support the show via www.patreon.com/mariekehardy and drop an email to mariekehardyisgoingtodie@gmail.comWhilst acknowledging the privilege that comes with having the space to discuss death and mortality, we want to also recognise that discussing these topics can raise some wounds. Dallas is talking with Anna Clark about her bold and expansive history that traces the changing and contested project of Australia's national story. You will think about this country differently after reading this book. A few years ago Anna Clark saw a series of paintings on a sandstone cliff face in the Northern Territory. There were characteristic crosshatched images of fat barramundi and turtles, as well as sprayed handprints and several human figures with spears. Next to them was a long gun, painted with white ochre, an unmistakable image of the colonisers. Was this an Indigenous rendering of contact? A work of history? Each piece of history has a message and context that depends on who wrote it and when. Australian history has swirled and contorted over the years: the history wars have embroiled historians, politicians and public commentators alike, while debates over historical fiction have been as divisive. History isn't just about understanding what happened and why. It also reflects the persuasions, politics and prejudices of its authors. Each iteration of Australia's national story reveals not only the past in question, but also the guiding concerns and perceptions of each generation of history makers. Making Australian History is bold and inclusive: it catalogues and contextualises changing readings of the past, it examines the increasingly problematic role of historians as national storytellers, and it incorporates the stories of people. Author Anna Clark is an award winning historian, author and public commentator. She has a PhD in History from the University of Melbourne and currently holds a prestigious Australian Research Council Future Fellowship at the Australian Centre for Public History at UTS. Anna is an internationally recognised scholar in Australian history, history education and the role of history in everyday life. She has written influential books such as The History Wars (with Stuart Macintyre), which won the NSW Premier's Prize and Queensland Premier's Prize for History, History's Children (about students' attitudes to Australian history), and Private Lives, Public History, as well as two history books for children (Convicted!—listed as a Children's Book Council of Australia notable book—and Explored!).
Anthony Albanese has bowed to pressure to hold an emergency national cabinet meeting on Monday as Covid cases spike over winter.News.com.au has confirmed that the Prime Minister has told state premiers he will reconvene the meeting on Monday morning. It comes amid a furore over the government's decision to axe pandemic payments and free RAT tests for concessions card holders.Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk stepped up her demands on Thusday for the Prime Minister to take action and hold a national cabinet when he returns from Fiji.“All we want is an update from the chief health officer,'' she told the Today Show.“Because we're just getting a bit of mixed messages at the moment. I think the country just wants to know how this wave is going.”Asked about the decision to halt the $750 pandemic leave payments for casuals without sick leave, the Queensland Premier pointedly said this was a matter for the Albanese government.“Look, I'm not going to get into that. That's a Federal Government responsibility,'' she said.Calls to continue $750 pandemic paymentsHealth Minister Mark Butler has admitted that the decision to axe the $750 pandemic payment for casual workers to isolate if they don't have sick leave was not based on health advice. In the first major test for the Albanese Government, a split has emerged in Labor ranks over the decision to axe the payment as ministers offer conflicting justifications for the decision.Aged Care Minister Anika Wells claimed on Thursday that current medical advice indicates funding should be funnelled into vaccinations and antiviral treatments. Her remarks were in response to NSW Opposition Leader Chris Minns breaking ranks to call for the payments to be reinstated.“It is best to put the money where the money is best targeted,” Ms Wells said.“The CMO says the best use of money is on vaccinations and antiviral treatments in aged care.”But just hours later, when Health Minister Mark Butler was asked directly if he had received any advice from the Chief Medical Officer on Pandemic Leave Disaster Payment, his replied “No”“This is a decision put in place by the former government,'' Mr Butler said.Mr Butler said “at some point we need to recognise that it is not the financial capacity to continue emergency payments forever.”A spokesman for acting Liberal leader Sussan Ley said the Health Minister and the Aged Care Minister clearly aren't on the same page when it comes to the pandemic response.“So the question is who is lying? What advice has the Government taken on pandemic support?,'' he said.“Or are they just not doing the work?.”As cases skyrocket over winter, the Albanese Government has axed the $750 payment in line with the previous government's plan to phase it out.”NSW Opposition Leader Chris Minns has called on the Prime Minister to reconsider the payment and support casuals who may be tempted to lie about their virus status rather than isolate for seven days.“The $750 isolation payment should be reinstated,'' Mr Minns said. “For our health and economy.“We need to make sure that people can meet their financial obligations, if someone's going to be at home for seven days without any financial recourse or any income coming in to meet those obligations.”In the first sign that he may be preparing to shift gears on the issue, the Prime Minister also told Sunrise he would hold talks on the issue when he returns from overseas.“Look, there are real challenges there. And certainly, when I return to Australia, we'll continue to address those issues. But we inherited those cut-offs across a range of decisions from the former Government,'' Mr Albanese said.- by Samantha Maiden, news.com.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
