Marlee Silva is a renowned Australian Rugby League journalist. Her love for the game began practically from the moment she was born, which was just three days before her dad won a premiership with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. As a Dunghutti and Gamilaroi woman, storytelling has been part of Marlee's Indigenous Australian culture for over 60,000 years. So as a proud supporter of the NRLW, it only felt natural that telling stories about women's rugby league is what Marlee was destined to do.But now she's dipped into Longform storytelling to tackle some of the biggest issues within the game. This week Chloe caught up with Marlee following the release of her new documentary: Skin in the Game.Skin in the Game examines the role that Rugby League has played in Australia's history of domestic and family violence and what the sport can do to be part of the solution. It has been 30 years since News Corp created the Super League in hopes of rivaling the Australian Rugby League. The creation of the Super League led to battles over television rights, player contracts, and the future of rugby league in Australia. Former Super League CEO John Ribot told Peter Psaltis on Wide World of Sports, "People have asked where our game is going, and you'd like to think that for all the disruptiveness of what was going on, definitely wasn't good for our game." "So, hopefully, the price we paid it was worth the amount of pain we went through at the time." "Now, it's just time to get on and keep building our game to be as great as what it is and keep being better and better," Mr Ribot continued. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In episode #275, we're revisiting one of the highlights of last year's TCS Live conference. International speaker, best-selling author and Founder of the Changing the Game Project John O'Sullivan took to the stage to share how to take your coaching from transactional to transformational. He's been featured on CNN, ESPN and NBC Sports, along with speaking at TEDx, and to the US Olympic Committee, US Soccer, USA Wrestling, USA Swimming, US Ski and Snowboard, Ireland Rugby and Australian Rugby League. Our Great Coach on this episode is Tim Sheens. Tim Sheens is an Australian Rugby League coach. He played 166 games for the Penrith Panthers and then moved in to coaching in 1984. He coached the Canberra Raiders to Premierships, in 1989, 90 and 94 and then in 2005 led the Wests Tigers to the premiership. He has also coached the NSW team to the 1991 state or origin series win and the Australian team to the 2013 World Championship. Some of the key highlights are:The philosophy he borrowed from an American coach of “being consistent in treating everybody differently.” And how as a result he doesn't see people management in black and white terms. How Tim identifies 3 things that effective teams need to be doing every week: working on their public perception, thining about the opposition and making sure that small groups within the organisation don't start talking negatively about other small groups. How the best coaches are good recruiters, and they select people who are going to suit their style. John MacKenzie chats with John Moore, Former Director of Australian Rugby League, about potential funding for Barlow Park upgrades by the Queensland Government as a part of the 2032 Olympic Games planning. On Wednesday, Cairns Regional Councillors voted unanimously to cooperate with the State Government on delivering "Olympic Legacy Upgrades" to the sporting venue located on the corner of Scott and Severin Street. On a sad and separate note, NRL Footy legend, Sam Backo, is in a critical condition in Cairns Hospital following a heart attack.

South Sydney is set to return to Barlow Park after five years, which has reinvigorated the calls for Cairns to get its own, world-class sporting stadium. John Moore has long pushed for the government to invest more in quality, sporting infrastructure for our beautiful city. Many feel that a new stadium would attract bigger and better matches, with the ability to be televised.

John MacKenzie chats with John Moore, former Director of Australian Rugby League, about the proposed sporting and events precinct at Barlow Park. John Moore was outraged at the Cairns Regional Council's decision to upgrade the facilities and transform the park into something other than a world-class stadium fit for international visits and significant games. The vision for a 20,000-seat, rectangular venue has been lost.

This week on the Ball and All Podcast we welcome Bede Durbidge - about as rock solid and as down to earth as they come. This bloke does not get the plaudits he deserves when you look back on a career that included 13 years on the WCT, Pipe Masters and Vans Triple Crown victories to go with a 2nd placing overall to Kelly Slater in 2008. Whilst his ride from the sleepy island paradise of Nth Straddie to the top of World Surfing is remarkable enough, the injury he suffered at Pipeline back in 2015 and the subsequent road to recovery will leave you gobsmacked at the sheer guts and determination of the man his mates call 'The White Fijian'. Also on the podcast this week, we look back on the takeaways from our chat with Gold Coast Titans Captain Jamal Fogarty, we go 'Around the Grounds' and get the latest happenings in the world of sport including Tom Brady's incredible 7th Super Bowl Ring and we pay our respects to Australian Rugby League legend and a man who had a huge impact on the local area - Ken McCaffery who unfortunately passed away during the week.As always we would like to thank you our major supportersLennox Pizza and Pasta - The best pizza this side of Naples - call in and see Mez and the team when next in Lennox Head, you won't be disappointed.Gage Roads Brew Co - who keep the boys and the crowd hydrated throughout the podcast with their Single Fin Summer Ale, Pipe Dreams Coastal Lager, SidetrackBareback Biltong - unless your travelling to downtown Johannesburg anytime soon, then this is the best biltong you will ever have the pleasure of eating. Wayne Pearce is a former High School science teacher, Rugby League hall-of-famer, Balmain Tigers captain, winning coach, listed in the 100 greatest players of all time, NRL commissioner, and was responsible for getting rugby league back onto the park when the game was losing over $13.5M every week during COVID-19. Wayne is one of Australia's most respected and highest-profile Rugby league identities. Prior to commencing his football career, Wayne completed a Bachelor of Science degree. The insights gained from psychology studies ignited a life-long passion for understanding the science and motivation of human behaviour. Wayne carved out an illustrious career in Rugby League where he represented and captained the Balmain Tigers, New South Wales and Australia. He played 217 matches for the Tigers, 16 State of Origins and 19 tests for Australia; and was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for services to Rugby League and the community. Wayne coached the Tigers through a period of massive change when they merged with Western Suburbs to become the Wests Tigers. He was appointed New South Wales State of Origin coach in 1999 and became the only person to both captain (1986) and coach (2000) a 3-0 series whitewash. After retiring from sports coaching, he took his knowledge and expertise to the corporate world, where he continues to lead by example as a Commissioner of the Australian Rugby League. Wayne recently led the high-profile Project Apollo team, which was the mission to get the NRL back up and running during the COVID-19 crisis. As a result, the NRL defied the critics and the sceptics to become the first full-contact professional sport in the world to resume their competition during the middle of the pandemic. In the shed this week, is Woody's father in law and all round legend of a bloke, Peter Wynn. Prior to running his successful sporting goods store, Peter was a big, hard running back rower in a legendary Eels team that dominated the 1980's. Coached by Jack Gibson featuring names like Sterling, Kenny, Price, Cronin and Grothe - Parramatta won 4 Grand Finals and became the last team to win 3 in a row. This episode, Peter takes us on an old school tour of one of the greatest era's in rugby league history. The 1980's was a time of shoulder charges and going the biff, mullets were in - shaved legs were out, beer the electrolyte of choice and downtime was filled with full time jobs rather than video games. Times may have changed, but listen in as Pete take us into the dressing sheds while Jack Gibson delivers one of his coaching sermons, ride the bus down Caxton St to take on the Maroons at Lang Park, gets an understanding of what it was like playing with and against some of the all time greats of the game and be prepared for a few 'left field guests' for our dinner party in the shed.
