In this episode of "American Potential," Jeff Crank sits down with Dan Caldwell, a Marine Corps Iraq veteran and former executive director for Concerned Veterans for America, to explore the transformative changes brought about by the VA Mission Act. Caldwell provides a detailed account of the act's development and implementation, which was aimed at correcting systemic issues revealed by the Phoenix VA scandal. He discusses the critical need for healthcare choice for veterans, emphasizing how the act has facilitated access to broader care options outside the traditional VA system. Caldwell also reflects on the accountability measures introduced by the act, which have significantly improved the responsiveness and efficiency of veteran healthcare services. By integrating private healthcare networks and establishing new standards, the VA Mission Act has pushed the VA towards a more competitive and veteran-centered model. Whistleblower Paula Pedene thought she had found her dream job. But her commitment to honesty and integrity led to a nightmare – one that should infuriate every one of us. Her story is chronicled in the book “A Sacred Duty; How a Whistleblower Took on the VA and Won.” Paula enlisted in 1978 and became a Navy journalist.  She re-enlisted for the Gulf War but a hereditary eye disease eventually ended her military career. In 1994 she was appointed the first full time Public Affairs officer for the Phoenix Veterans Administration Health Center. She led the Phoenix VA to national recognition and awards. However, a new administrator who was inclined to his own betterment rather than putting the Veterans first led to her first conflict. He delayed and denied care in order to secure additional equipment. Dr. Sam Foote was the original whistleblower in this situation and approached Paula about reporting the conditions and she agreed to step up. An internal investigation found $ 11 million in shortfalls but Paula was branded. Incoming administrators sought out minor infractions to punish Paula, literally exiling her to the basement. What was supposed to be a 30 day investigation turned into two years in limbo. But she would not give up. The new administrators were “gaming the system” in order to secure performance bonuses. They were literally keeping two sets of appointment books. Testimony and later investigations revealed that as many as 3.500 Veterans were stranded on these “alternate” lists and 1,800 could not secure primary care appointments. Some died while waiting for appointments. Eventually, thanks to many allied whistleblowers within the VA, Congress and the media, the Phoenix VA state of affairs (and similar situations around the country) was finally brought to light. Of the 156 VA hospitals nationwide, similar wait list situations were occurring at 111 of them. Paula received redemption. TAKEAWAY: “The Veterans Administration is an agency with a very noble mission. But the bureaucracy sometimes lets bad actors maneuver and it needs a culture change.”

This episode is dedicated to the loving memory of my favorite amazing therapist Christine Loeber. Go to https://www.christinemloeberfoundation.org/christinesstory to learn about her wonderful life. Several traumatic experiences in High School lead to early bouts with opioid addiction, which I managed to keep at bay while answering a generational call to wartime service. Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, I enlisted in the US Army, surviving extensive Combat action during two tours in Afghanistan with the most elite Special Operations Forces. Transition to civilian life brought severe struggles with Post-Traumatic Stress and a vicious reemergence of my addiction. I fought through seemingly insurmountable obstacles that included waiting months to see a mental health professional after being placed on the Phoenix VA's scandalous secret waiting list. An outrageous arrest and incarceration on grossly unwarranted criminal charges preceded the first of several rock bottom experiences.  This episode dives deep into the Menlo Park Chronicles. Narrowly escaping limb amputation and death from a serious bacterial infection caused by IV drug use, that spread throughout my body, gave way to miraculous redemption through the grace of Jesus Christ.   In this episode Birdman visits with David Harder with Summit Healthcare about the new launch of the Veterans' Pilot Program in Show Low, Arizona. Full Video @ https://youtu.be/UO7XYACMBbo   Summit Healthcare Regional Medical Center, TriWest Healthcare Alliance and Show Low VA Clinic Work Together to Meet the Healthcare Needs of Local Veterans Summit Healthcare and the Show Low VA Clinic headed by Dr. Jeffrey Reres, Medical Director, began negotiations in January of this year to offer local Veterans the opportunity to receive simple x-ray and lab services closer to home. In June, the Pilot Program launched in Show Low, Ariz., and the Secretary of Veterans Affairs has approved continuance of this program for the immediate future.     The Pilot Program offers veterans who are seen at the Show Low VA Clinic the ability to receive simple X-rays and labs the same day as their VA appointment. With Veterans able to get the care they need close to home, veterans can get the care they need sooner and also eliminates making a trip to Phoenix for tests or X-rays.   “Our Veterans deserve to receive their healthcare here at home and the Pilot Program offers another service that Summit Healthcare can provide to our local communities,” says Ron McArthur, CEO of Summit Healthcare.   Since its start in early June, this Pilot Program has seen many patients who did not have to leave town for their tests. “It can be a challenge for some Veterans to make the three-hour trip to Phoenix, and this program help Veterans get the care they need right here at home,” says Dr. Jeffrey Reres, Medical Director, Show Low Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC).   A top priority for VA is making sure that Veterans have access to high quality care when and where they need it. One way VA accomplishes this priority is by using VA’s community care network.   “The primary question at the forefront of all the decisions we make at the Phoenix VA is, ‘What is best in the eyes of the Veteran?’” said Rima Nelson, PVAHCS Director. “We are focused on modernizing and streamlining processes to improve care for the Veterans we serve. This is a great convenience for the Veterans in the Show Low area. They get care quicker and closer to home, and that means test results come back sooner and ongoing treatment can resume sooner.” Working with TriWest Healthcare Alliance and the Phoenix VA Health Care System (to which the Show Low VA Clinic is a part) to obtain authorization, Veterans receive can their services and results the same day.   “It is our privilege at TriWest to participate in this pilot program to ensure timely and convenient health care services to Veterans who call Show Low and the surrounding area home,” said Dave McIntyre, President and CEO, TriWest Healthcare Alliance. “TriWest truly values partnerships with our community providers who share our commitment to provide Veterans the care they have earned, and so rightfully deserve.” About Summit Healthcare Summit Healthcare Regional Medical Center is a private, not-for-profit organization in the beautiful White Mountains of Northeastern Arizona.  Summit responds to the health care needs of more than 90,000 permanent and seasonal residents living in a 3,000 square mile area. It's time to widen the definition of abuse. Recently there have been some glaring examples of abuse in the news: Donald Sterling's cruel words to his girlfriend, the unconscionable kidnapping of 200 young girls and 40 deaths of veterans due to corruption at the Phoenix VA.These deserve our outrage as does veterans suffering from PTSD. What doesn't get media attention is how we hurt ourselves on a daily basis. In the interview with Barbara Walters marking the end of her career, she talked about having the woulda, coulda, shoulda syndrome. When someone of her stature and worldwide acclaim comments on constantly being bombarded by thoughts of doing it wrong, it's a sign that we must address and heal what goes on in our minds and put an end to continually abusing ourselves. It's bad enough that other people do it to us. We have to stop doing it to ourselves. Research confirms that 90% of our self-talk is negative.
