This episode focuses on a discussion of publicly funded and operated health care in the United States. If this might seem a pipe dream with no national precedence in the U.S., the authors of the recent book, Our Veterans: Winners, Losers, Friends and Enemies on the New Terrain of Veterans Affairs, suggest it's not. They describe the current system of VA Healthcare as a model for excellence and equity, worthy of support among public health care activists. Our Veterans, reviewed in the spring 2023 issue of New Labor Forum, offers a broad examination of Veterans Affairs, as well as essential information about the cost, quality, and effectiveness of healthcare provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

This week I'm talking to Peter Panagore about his book 'Heaven Is Beautiful: How Dying Taught Me That Death Is Just the Beginning'.When Peter Baldwin Panagore died on the side of a mountain, his life was forever changed. Decades later, the intense spiritual journey continues, with a story that combines the thrills of a wilderness adventure with the awe-inspiring elements of a paranormal novel. In March of 1980, college senior Peter Panagore went ice climbing on the world-famous Lower Weeping Wall, along the Ice Fields Parkway in Alberta, Canada. His climbing partner was an experienced ice climber, but Panagore was a novice. On their descent, they became trapped on the side of the mountain. As the sun set, he was overcome by exhaustion and hypothermia. He died on the side of that mountain. And in those minutes on the other side, he experienced hell, forgiveness, and unconditional love. Heaven was beautiful.Panagore's death experience changed his life and resulted in an intense spiritual journey that has continued for decades. It impelled him to pursue a master's degree at Yale Divinity School, focusing on systematic theology and Christian mysticism. His educational background coupled with 30 years of meditative practice and 20 years of professional work with the dying and grieving has given him unique insight, language, and perspective on heaven, God, death, life, love, beauty, and hope.BioGlobal Audible Best-Selling Author of Heaven Is Beautiful: How Dying Taught Me That Death Is Just The Beginning and Maine Best-Selling Author of Two Minutes for God: Quick Fixes for the Spirit Rev. Peter Baldwin Panagore, MDiv. is an entrepreneur and ordained pastor. Storytelling, communicator, public speaker, pastor, and storyteller, Peter had thirty million views annually on TV (Nielsen Ratings) and uncounted listeners on FM and AM across Maine and New Hampshire plus around the nation.Peter graduated from Yale University, where he completed his MDiv, focusing on the practices and writings in the classics of western mysticism.A two-time Near-Death Experiencer, Peter, first died in 1980 of hypothermia while ice climbing in Banff Provincial Park in Canada, and then again of a heart attack in 2015, just as Hampton Roads, HarperCollins Canada, Guidepost's, Jaffa Kiado, Audible, Brilliance Audio, Kindle, Audible, and Nook, released Heaven Is Beautiful globally. In 2020, Ananta Productions with Andrea Stone and Avenue Pictures with Cary Brokaw optioned Heaven Is Beautiful for a feature film.Peter's Maine Best Seller, Two Minutes for God: Quick Fixes for the Spirit, published with Simon & Schuster, is a daily inspirational story drawn from among the seventeen hundred he wrote and broadcast each day. Michael Gier joined The Protectors to talk about his documentary WOUNDED HEROES, his time in the film industry, and bringing this story to light.  Full interview on podcast and YouTube this Monday.  About the documentary:  Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) among Veterans is a serious problem with over 20 Veterans a day taking their lives by suicide.  Most are given prescription drugs but as many Veterans have said, medication is just a band-aid over a wound that will never heal. Our Veterans deserve more than just a band-aid and so director/producer Michael Gier went on a mission and found successful treatments and programs that help anyone battling PTS get their lives back. And just like Veterans; firefighters, police officers, and other first responders not only deal with PTS, but they also have very high suicide rates. Although Michael started out to help Veterans, Wounded Heroes features treatments/programs that help all of our heroes and anyone battling post-traumatic stress; literally saving lives.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/theprotectors)

Today's show is all about recognizing our Veterans. Little did we know that most of our very own American Soldiers, after risking their lives, some of them, although not all, are coming home homeless, penniless, and worst, they feel forgotten. That is why we have here today, Miss Sandy Mc Nabb Bower (Founder and Volunteer Director of Vets Returning Home) to share how she got to the point of starting this organization that is helping our Veterans start their new life. Sandy will tell us the story of why she chose to start this organization, how and what her purpose is in helping our veterans in need. Our Veterans are asking for help, and they need us. They need you! They are not asking for a lot but, a little help is appreciated Suppose you are the person who has the heart for our veterans in need. Vets Returning Home's contact number is: Vets Returning Home Phone Number: 586-285-5606 You may also reach the founder herself through Phone Number: 586-216-8510 You could also send her an email at  sandy@empirepays.com For more info on how you can sign up for their Sponsored Partnership Program, visit them at https://www.vetsreturninghome.org/spp Website: https://www.vetsreturninghome.org/ Topics covered: 1:30 - Introduction to Sandy Bower. Her reason and mission for starting this non-profit organization. 6:18: Let's see for ourselves. If you are in Michigan and would like to drop by and say hello, pay your respect to our heroic heroes. Sandy is inviting you to visit them at 17955 E Eleven Mile Rd, Roseville, MI 48066, United States. (Click the Address Link to load Google Map) 8:37 - How did this non-profit organization start? 13:01 - Amid this COVID crisis, how are they surviving? Sandy shares with us how. 23:27 - Sandy's tips for us, business owners, on how to survive the crisis. "For me, failure was not an option," - she says   Key Takeaways "So I created this where if a business makes a commitment to the returning home, like a monthly commitment for because I'm really trying to build that residual, where no matter what happens with fundraising dinners and large gatherings and stuff, we need to survive no matter what. So the different thresholds are like there's a package for $25 a month, $50 a month, or $100 a month. And in exchange, because it's got to be a win-win. So, for the business that participates in our supporting partner program, I bought this plaque. So you get this plaque that says we're a proud supporter of Vets Returning Home with our logo. And then, they get a window cling, the same image, window cling's proud supporter, they get to put our logo on their website, and we put their logo on our website, we come out and do a live stream featuring their business, and encourage the community to help support their business while they're supporting our veterans."   "The little train that could that's the biggest secret. The little train that could, and it's funny because when I share that, with so many of these younger ones that I mentor, they're like, Really? That's it?. I am dead serious. If you think you can, you can. If you tell yourself, oh, I don't think I can do that. Well then, guaranteed you will fail."   Connect with Sandy Bower Facebook   Connect with Vets Returning Home Facebook Instagram  YouTube Website   Connect with Keith Facebook Instagram  YouTube LinkedIn Website   Other Helpful links! No Barriers Warriors helps Veterans redefine their identity, purpose, and community as they face past and present challenges. Our Veterans' programs serve as both an opportunity for growth and a catalyst for change as these brave men and women stretch physical and emotional boundaries, foster camaraderie, push through adversity, and step up to serve others. No Barriers Warriors programs are FREE, for Veterans with service connected disabilities. Learn more about our Essential Eligibility Criteria to see if a Warriors program is right for you. The Problem According to a 2019 Department of Veteran Affairs study, while the Veteran population is declining, the percentage of Veterans with a service connected disability has been steadily rising. These injuries, both visible and invisible, add to the potential struggle a Veteran can face after transitioning out of military service, and reintegrating into their civilian communities. Our Solution Using the No Barriers life philosophy, we craft an experience that challenges Veterans to critically think about where they are in life, where they want to be, and how to get there. This experience gives them new tools, strategies, and drive to overcome barriers that are holding them back – as well as a new support team that will be with them throughout the program. Warriors programs are separated into two categories: At-Home and Expeditions. Our At-Home programs are a perfect way to engage with the Veteran community, as well as work through self-improvement, from a space of your choosing. Expeditions are adventure based trips, where we bring Veterans to us, to take a deep dive into the No Barriers Life, while challenging them to overcome some serious obstacles in the wilderness. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/paheroes/support

Caring for Our Veterans with the Honorable Dr. David ShulkinWelcome to the Difficult Conversations with Dr. Anthony Orsini. This week my extra special guest is the Honorable Dr. David Shulkin, who is currently CEO of Shulkin Solutions. He was the Ninth Secretary of the US Dept of Veteran Affairs, nominated by President Trump to serve his cabinet. Prior to serving as Secretary of the VA, he served as Under Secretary for Health under President Obama, and unanimously confirmed twice by the US Senate. Dr. Shulkin represented 21 million American veterans and was responsible for the nation’s largest integrated healthcare system with over 1,200 sites of care, serving over 9 million Veterans. Prior to coming to the VA, Secretary Shulkin was a widely respected healthcare executive having served as Chief Executive of leading hospitals and health systems such as Beth Israel in New York City and Morristown Medical Center in New Jersey, which is where Dr. Orsini first met him. He has also previously been named 100 most influential people in American Healthcare by Modern Healthcare. Dr. Shulkin’s recently published book is called, It Shouldn’t Be This Hard to Serve Your Country: Our Broken Government and the Plight of Veterans. Dr. Orsini mentions his first encounter with Dr. Shulkin, and remembered how genuine, , and very engaging he was. We find out what made Dr. Shulkin take the medicine path and what led him into the leadership role. Dr. Shulkin tells us the single most difficult conversation that he had, and he gives us advice on his approach to communicating bad news. There are so many problems with medical education training right now with communication, and Dr. Shulkin shares with us how we can fix this. Dr. Shulkin’s dedication in his book impressed Dr. Orsini, and he talks about his dad, who was a psychiatrist on an Army base, and if he influenced him in any way. We learn about when he takes on his new position as Under Secretary at the VA in 2015, and what he realized he had in front of him with the wait time issues that were going on. Also, we find how he fixed the issue so quickly. Since he served with both Trump and Obama, we find out the game plan he had to navigate through the two different environments and succeed at it. Dr. Shulkin shares with us how he was able to start the Patient Experience Program at the VA. Telemedicine is discussed and whether or not it’s here to stay or if we keep doing more. Find out what Dr. Shulkin is most proud of career wise. If you enjoyed this podcast, please hit the subscribe button to find out more about what we do and how we teach communication. February 2019 This month we leave the code breaking behind and focus on what became an important part of the Off-Duty time for many of the staff at GC&CS during World War 2. Working long shifts and being far from the bright lights of London and other major towns, the staff of Bletchley Park organised much of their own entertainment. As early as 1940 the management recognised that the staff needed diversions to fill their down time and encouraged the organisation of many of these. With a staff drawn from so many clever and gifted people it wasn’t long before there was a film society, a gramophone club and various clubs for amongst other things fencing, sculpture, architecture and Scottish Dancing. One of the most successful of these was the Bletchley Park Drama Group who between 1941-1946, staged performances of established plays and wrote their own musical reviews. Bletchley Park volunteer steward and guide, Harold Liberty, has been researching the Drama Group over the last year and we sat down with him to find out what he had discovered. Our Veterans add some colour to the story as they fondly remember the Drama Group from interviews from our own Oral History Archive. Reproductions of original scripts performed by Harold Liberty. Welcome to our second annual Veterans Day special, where we feature a really amazing Veteran with an incredible story - and a nonprofit as well, where we can help veterans who may be in crisis.Amanda E. Held is an equine specialist facilitator, lifelong equestrian, and veteran with seventeen combined years of service in the United States Air Force and the Air National Guard.   She is passionate about helping people shift their perception to live a life of radical appreciation. Amanda's seeks to travel and teach her process to heal those who are suffering from PTSD (post traumatic stress syndrome). Her work benefits clients on both personal and professional levels, and allows them to create a life of passion, purpose, and inspiration for themselves.Amanda is the founder of H.O.O.V.E.S. (Healing of Our Veterans through Equine Assisted Services).  H.O.O.V.E.S. believes that Experiential Training makes a difference for veterans, and that Equine Assisted Learning can greatly impact our service men and women. Through transformational workshops, our team works tirelessly to provide this much needed support to our service men and women.   “Our small, nonverbal body language is attached to our subconscious. Horses have the ability to read those traits and display them back to you. So you're going to get a clear read on what you put out to the world, with an opportunity to make real-time shifts and change that.” The three pillars of H.O.O.V.E.S (Healing of Our Veterans through Equine Assisted Services):   The Initial Three-Day Retreat: Veterans have a chance to leave their current environment to spend three days among fellow veterans and rescued horses to work through trauma and create a personal mission statement to take with them out into the world. Community: Every month, veterans complete a service project Ongoing Support: Veterans return monthly to continue the process.     The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “If you feel like you're the only one going through this, you're not. I promise you're not. The first step to healing is accepting where you're at, and understanding that you're not alone and you can not get through it alone. Nobody can get through this alone. I encourage everyone to get a mentor, get a coach, get a therapist, whatever you need; there's always going to be someone just a little further along than you who can help you get there.” --   Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. I am on my way to help teach yet another MMBC (Military Mortgage Boot Camp Class) So I leave you the listener some knowledge about the VA home loan and its advantages. Our Veterans paid their down payment for a home when they signed that government contract and became troops. We owe it to them to educate ourselves in a way that helps these Veterans achieve the goal of home ownership.

In this episode Birdman visits with David Harder with Summit Healthcare about the new launch of the Veterans' Pilot Program in Show Low, Arizona. Full Video @ https://youtu.be/UO7XYACMBbo   Summit Healthcare Regional Medical Center, TriWest Healthcare Alliance and Show Low VA Clinic Work Together to Meet the Healthcare Needs of Local Veterans Summit Healthcare and the Show Low VA Clinic headed by Dr. Jeffrey Reres, Medical Director, began negotiations in January of this year to offer local Veterans the opportunity to receive simple x-ray and lab services closer to home. In June, the Pilot Program launched in Show Low, Ariz., and the Secretary of Veterans Affairs has approved continuance of this program for the immediate future.     The Pilot Program offers veterans who are seen at the Show Low VA Clinic the ability to receive simple X-rays and labs the same day as their VA appointment. With Veterans able to get the care they need close to home, veterans can get the care they need sooner and also eliminates making a trip to Phoenix for tests or X-rays.   “Our Veterans deserve to receive their healthcare here at home and the Pilot Program offers another service that Summit Healthcare can provide to our local communities,” says Ron McArthur, CEO of Summit Healthcare.   Since its start in early June, this Pilot Program has seen many patients who did not have to leave town for their tests. “It can be a challenge for some Veterans to make the three-hour trip to Phoenix, and this program help Veterans get the care they need right here at home,” says Dr. Jeffrey Reres, Medical Director, Show Low Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC).   A top priority for VA is making sure that Veterans have access to high quality care when and where they need it. One way VA accomplishes this priority is by using VA’s community care network.   “The primary question at the forefront of all the decisions we make at the Phoenix VA is, ‘What is best in the eyes of the Veteran?’” said Rima Nelson, PVAHCS Director. “We are focused on modernizing and streamlining processes to improve care for the Veterans we serve. This is a great convenience for the Veterans in the Show Low area. They get care quicker and closer to home, and that means test results come back sooner and ongoing treatment can resume sooner.” Working with TriWest Healthcare Alliance and the Phoenix VA Health Care System (to which the Show Low VA Clinic is a part) to obtain authorization, Veterans receive can their services and results the same day.   “It is our privilege at TriWest to participate in this pilot program to ensure timely and convenient health care services to Veterans who call Show Low and the surrounding area home,” said Dave McIntyre, President and CEO, TriWest Healthcare Alliance. “TriWest truly values partnerships with our community providers who share our commitment to provide Veterans the care they have earned, and so rightfully deserve.” About Summit Healthcare Summit Healthcare Regional Medical Center is a private, not-for-profit organization in the beautiful White Mountains of Northeastern Arizona.  Summit responds to the health care needs of more than 90,000 permanent and seasonal residents living in a 3,000 square mile area. Our goal is quite simple—to provide patients with state-of-the-art health care close to home.   About the Phoenix VA Health Care System   The Phoenix VA Health Care System is a complexity level 1b tertiary care hospital, and community clinics providing services to over 91,000 Arizona Veterans. The hospital has an annual operating budget of more than $750 million and employs more than 3,400 full time staff.
