(AURN News) — President Donald Trump's latest executive order directing federal agencies to enhance support for law enforcement has sparked renewed fears over the militarization of local police and its potential impact on civil liberties. The order, signed Monday, instructs the attorney general and other agency heads to “maximize the use of Federal resources” in support of state and local law enforcement. Among its directives: developing new best practices to “aggressively police communities,” increasing officer pay and benefits, seeking enhanced penalties for crimes against police, and investing in prison infrastructure. Section 4, mandates that within 90 days, the attorney general and the secretary of defense “shall increase the provision of excess military and national security assets in local jurisdictions to assist State and local law enforcement.” The order also calls for determining how military training, non-lethal capabilities, and personnel “can most effectively be utilized to prevent crime.” With provisions that call for expanded use of military assets in local jurisdictions, the order is likely to renew public debate over the federal government's role in shaping local law enforcement — and how far is too far when it comes to crime prevention. In a lively conversation, The Border Chronicle founders grapple with the last three months of militarization and surveillance, and ponder what's to come. What is happening on the border three months into the Trump administration? Well, you've come to the right place. Here, Border Chroniclefounders Melissa and Todd spend the hour discussing just that.Among the topics covered are Stryker armored vehicles deployed in El Paso, including one conducting surveillance from a garbage dump; DHS secretary Kristi Noem recounting an epiphany about a Target store by Salvadoran president Nayib Bukele (this epiphany helps Bukele justify the 40,000-person capacity “terrorist” prison accepting U.S. deportees); the chilling surveillance tower known as the Torre Centinela looming over Ciudad Juárez; a DOD spokesperson telling Melissa that “you know more than we know”; and Todd sharing the story of how he got kicked out of the Border Security Expo 10 years ago (yes, there is some good old-fashioned humor as well).Militarization, surveillance, privatization, water, and climate change are all addressed as The Border Chronicle attempts to grapple with what has happened, what is happening, and what's to come. And since there is so much to discuss, we'd love to hear your perspectives about the last 100 days. Please feel free to comment below. What are your thoughts and opinions? Border residents, what have you seen? Anything of note? Please don't be shy about adding to our conversation. Also, here's a few of Melissa's favorite signs from the “Hands Off” protest in Tucson last week as mentioned in the podcast. The building in the distance is the Torre Centinela under construction in Ciudad Juárez. This week we're looking at the insidious and nefarious sides of tech, starting with a conversation with Esra'a Al Shafei discussing her new site Surveillance Watch, an incredible trove of data formulated into an easily searchable and interactive site that exposes the vast interconnected web of global authoritarian surveillance systems. Esra'a discusses the impunity with which these corporations and financial institutions operate, with no care for borders, side-stepping sanctions, and using genocide as a marketing tool. She highlights the importance of bringing this information to light, of acting to protect ourselves and each other and never normalizing the Orwellian panopticon. Next, cohost Mickey Huff sits down with investigative journalist Peter Byrne to unveil a new 10-part series titled Military AI Watch: the dangerous militarization of AI and the profiteering behind it. Peter and Mickey discuss the first piece in the series, “One Ring to Rule them All,” where Peter names the cast of characters in this dark fantasy turned reality, their terrifying aims, the monopoly on murder, and more. GUESTS: Esra'a Al Shafei is a Bahraini civil rights activist, free-speech advocate, and the founder of Surveillance Watch, a website that monitors the global surveillance industry. Peter Byrne is a veteran investigative reporter who has written on topics ranging from breast cancer, to wildlife conservation, to corruption at the Postal Service. Together with Project Censored, he is launching “Military AI Watch,” a ten-part series on the militarization of AI. Send us a textThe Mapuche people of Chile are fighting to reclaim ancestral lands taken over by vast industrial eucalyptus and pine plantations established during the Pinochet dictatorship in the 1970s. Their struggle goes beyond land ownership—it's about reclaiming culture, spirituality, language, and food sovereignty while facing criminalization under Chile's new "usurpation law."• Mapuche territory (Wallmapu) was initially protected by treaty but later seized through what the Chilean government called "pacification of the Araucanía" • Industrial tree plantations have destroyed native ecosystems, depleted water resources, and created conditions for devastating "megafires" and "gigafires"• Chilean authorities use "preventative prison" to hold Mapuche activists for up to two years without formal charges or trials• Militarization of Mapuche territories has led to surveillance, intimidation, and targeting of young activists• The controversial "usurpation law" criminalizes land reclamation efforts, violating international indigenous rights agreements Chile has ratified• The struggle connects to broader patterns of indigenous land theft for industrial tree plantations under dictatorships globally• Land reclamation is essential for Mapuche cultural revival and addressing extreme poverty On this episode of Breaking Green, we spoke with Anne Petermann. Petermann co- founded Global Justice Ecology Project in 2003. She is the international coordinator of the Campaign to STOP GE Trees, which she also co founded. Petermann is a founding board member of the Will Miller Social Justice Lecture Series. She has been involved in movements for forest protection and indigenous rights since 1991, and the international and national climate justice movements since 2004. She participated in the founding of the Durban group for climate justice in 2004, in Durban, South Africa, and Climate Justice Now in 2007 at the Bali Indonesia UN climate conference. She was adopted as an honorary member of the St. Francis- Sokoki band of the Abenaki in 1992 for her work in support of their struggle for state recognition. On Sunday, The Washington Post, El Universal in Mexico, and Lighthouse Reports published “Death and Deterrence in the Rio Grande,” a yearlong investigation on drowning deaths of asylum seekers. As the U.S.-Mexico investigations editor for Lighthouse Reports, I helped collect the data, did reporting, and coordinated the binational investigation. We wanted to examine how border militarization, including Texas' Operation Lone Star, contributes to the growing number of drowning deaths in the Rio Grande/Río Bravo. As a longtime border reporter, I had never encountered a comprehensive, binational investigation of this issue, so a year ago, we set out to document what was happening, especially in the Eagle Pass/Piedras Negras corridor on the Rio Grande, which has seen the highest number of drownings. The investigation began November 15, 2023, when I and my colleagues Daniel Howden, director at Lighthouse Reports, and Justin Hamel, an independent photojournalist, set out from the boat ramp at Shelby Park in Eagle Pass. Leading us down the river was Jessie Fuentes, owner of Epi's Canoes and Kayaks. We set out at sunrise as fog drifted across the river, lending it a ghostly, ethereal ambience. But we were soon met with a cold, hard reality: desperate families stranded on islands in the middle of the river. We came across a family of four, the father with a toddler on his shoulders, standing in the freezing water. Soldiers in Texas yelled at them to go back to Mexico. During our investigation, we found that in 2023, one out of every 10 people who died in the river was a child. Our trip down the river was a heartrending experience, one I'll never forget. In this special Backlight & Border Chronicle podcast, I discuss our investigation's findings with my Lighthouse colleagues Beatriz Ramahlo da Silva and Tessa Pang. And please check out the full investigation published by our media partners The Washington Post and El Universal. You can also read about how we undertook the lengthy data collection and analysis for this project at Lighthouse Reports. In this one we dive into the complexities surrounding the concept of cartels, particularly in the context of the drug trade. Do drug cartels in Latin America exist? In this interview we discuss how misconceptions about cartels have been shaped by narratives in media and government, leading to a distorted understanding of their economic realities and the implications of militarization in regions affected by drug violence. What happens when the police become an army? Since 1997, the US Department of Defense has transferred more than $7.2bn in military equipment to law enforcement agencies. This militarization has, unsurprisingly, been shown to unjustly impact on Black communities and is associated with increased killings by police. The Police Public Safety Training Center in Atlanta - more commonly known as 'Cop City' - is just the latest manifestation of the militarization of policing. It is a costly and controversial endeavor, being forced through by the local Democrat-run administration, in the face of widespread opposition among local communities. Resistance to the project has been met with spurious legal roadblocks, activist intimidation and violent repression. But Cop City is far from being just a local issue; almost every US state now has a Cop City project of their own in some stage of development, and the logic, structures and ramifications of Cop Cities are truly international. In this episode we are joined by Liliana, Joy James and Kalonji Changa to discuss the history of Cop Cities, the parallels with the notorious School of the Americas, and the ways in which the tactics and logic of US imperialism abroad are being brought to bear on working class and racialized communities at home. --- Liliana is an immigrant from Colombia based in Houston, Texas. She is an abolitionist and has worked directly with prisoners on death row and their families. She is the co-host of the radio show 'Voz de La Tierra' on KPFT Pacifica, discussing the geopolitical effects of militarism, policing, imperialism, and racism on Indigenous, Black, and immigrant colonized communities across the globe. Joy James is an organizer and author. Her recent books include In Pursuit of Revolutionary Love; New Bones Abolition: Captive Maternal Agency and the (After)Life of Erica Garner; and Contextualizing Angela Davis: The Agency and Identity of an Icon. She is the editor of Beyond Cop Cities: Dismantling State and Corporate-Funded Armies and Prisons, and the forthcoming ENGAGE: Indigenous, Black, and Afro-Indigenous Futures. Joy also works with the Guerrilla Intellectual University (GIU) podcast collective on Black Power Media (BPM). Kalonji Jama Changa is an organizer and founder of the FTP Movement. Emissions from anesthesia are one of the largest sources of greenhouse gases from hospitals. This anesthesiologist wants to change that. And, a cultural anthropologist discusses the Mariana Islands' long history of colonization and why demilitarization matters for climate progress.A Major Source Of Greenhouse Gases In Hospitals? AnesthesiaDid you know that some of the gases used in anesthesia are strong greenhouse gases? A few years ago, Seattle Children's Hospital analyzed its carbon footprint and found that the gases used in anesthesia made up about 7% of the hospital's total emissions, right behind emissions from heating and power and those from commuting.Faced with this problem, Dr. Elizabeth Hansen, a pediatric anesthesiologist at Seattle Children's, took matters into her own hands and slashed the operating room's emissions. She now helps other hospitals do the same with Project Spruce.Guest host Anna Rothschild talks with Dr. Hansen about how and why she took on the problem.Militarization And Environmental Injustice In The Mariana IslandsLet's take a trip to the Northern Mariana Islands, a string of islands in the Pacific just north of Guam. The islands were sites of major battles during World War II and were captured by the United States in 1944. The US established a military presence across the territory—including building the world's largest air force base at the time, on an island called Tinian. The US military never left, and in the 1980s, the Northern Mariana Islands became a US territory. A few years ago, the Pentagon proposed building a bombing range on an island called Pagan, but residents of the islands pushed back.Dr. Isa Arriola is a cultural anthropologist at Concordia University in Montreal and co-founder of the organization Our Common Wealth 670, based in Saipan, the capital of the Northern Mariana Islands. She's fought back against the militarization of her home islands, and she talks with guest host Anna Rothschild about how the military presence has affected the people and environment of the Marianas, and why demilitarization needs to be part of climate action.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. What if the aggressive schoolyard bully tactics that the Chinese Communist Party uses in the South China Sea were deployed globally? This week's guest, Michael Sobolik, argues that this question will soon be answered and illustrates how the CCP's Belt and Road Initiative, once considered a purely economic plan, could really have a "second phase" that places military demands and action on the balance sheet. As a result, we attempt to address how the American Arsenal of Democracy can counter a global Chinese economic alternative that is primed to be militarized on a global scale.

On this edition of Parallax Views, Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis, co-chair of the Poor People's Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival and director of the Kairos Center for Religions, Rights, and Social Justice at Union Theological Seminary. Rev. Dr. Theoharis delves into her recent article for TomDispatch, The Nation, and Counterpunch, where she critiques the Heritage Foundation's controversial Project 2025, likening it to an American version of Pax Romana. Key topics include the rise of right-wing Christian Nationalism, the conflict between the Christian Left and the Christian Nationalist agenda, and the implications of Project 2025 for labor rights and the working class. The conversation also covers the intersection of militarism, the war on the poor, the ongoing crisis in Gaza, and bipartisan support for the military-industrial complex, which diverts resources from critical needs like healthcare and affordable housing. Additionally, the episode examines the influence of Pax Americana and parallel rises of Christian Nationalism and neoliberalism in the United States. We'll also discuss the social justice work that the Poor People's Campaign and Kairos Center are engaged in, especially during this year's election season.

The waters, as well as the rocks, reefs and submerged shoals of the South China Sea are a major source of friction in East Asia. In recent months, tensions have flared between two of the claimants – China and the Philippines – over Second Thomas Shoal, a submerged feature in the Spratly Islands, which the Chinese call Ren Ai Jiao. In 1999, the Philippines intentionally grounded a Philippine Navy transport vessel called the Sierra Madre on the reef and since then the outpost has been manned by a small contingent of marines. In 2016, an arbitral tribunal established under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea ruled that Second Thomas Shoal is a low-tide elevation located within the exclusive economic zone of the Philippines and therefore sovereignty belongs to the Philippines. No other country can legitimately claim sovereignty over the feature or the waters around it. Beijing doesn't recognize the ruling, even though it was legally binding on both China and the Philippines.Late last year, Chinese Coast Guard and maritime militia vessels began aggressively interfering with the Philippines' routine missions to deliver supplies to the Filipino forces on the Sierra Madre. On several occasions, Chinese ships have used high-pressure water cannons and rammed Filipino boats. The most serious confrontation took place in mid-June, when the Chinese used axes and knives to damage multiple Philippine vessels. A Filipino navy sailor lost his thumb in the skirmish. Negotiations between Beijing and Manila in early July produced a provisional arrangement, and the Philippines subsequently successfully conducted a resupply operation. It is uncertain whether the understanding will hold, however, since Beijing and Manila publicly disagree about what has been agreed upon.To discuss the situation at Second Thomas Shoal and China's approach to the South China Sea, host Bonnie Glaser is joined by Zhang Feng, a visiting scholar at Yale Law School's Paul Tsai China Center. His research focuses on Chinese foreign policy, international relations theory, and international relations in East Asia. Two members of Veterans for Peace participated in a recent delegation to South Korea to mark the anniversary of two young girls who were killed by a US tank during a military exercise. Clearing the FOG speaks with Ellen Barfield, a long time activist who was on delegation and who was serving in South Korea in 1980 when the massacre of students and leftists occurred in Gwangju, about the trip and the ongoing war in Korea. Barfield also discusses the RIMPAC military exercises that begin this week in the Pacific and the veteran-led Peace Walk that is headed to Washington, DC for the anti-NATO activities starting the weekend of July 6 and 7. Nationalism. Emerging technology. Militarization. Destroyed bodies. Total war. In this episode, three historians reconsider the dominant themes of the First World War—which are as relevant today as they were a century ago. Cheyenne Pettit studies Canadian and British conflicts over the treatment of venereal disease during World War One. Matthew Hershey's research explores meanings and experiences of soldiers' suicide in the First World War. And Lediona Shahollari focuses on the 1923 Greek-Turkish population exchange during the partition of those two states in the aftermath of the Great War. Join them in a conversation reflecting on the legacy of that conflict.

A police state is characterized by a government or authority that exercises an unusually high degree of control and surveillance over its citizens, often at the expense of their civil liberties and individual freedoms. Here's a summary of what a police state might look like:Authoritarian Rule: In a police state, power is concentrated in the hands of a central authority, typically a dictator or a small group of individuals. The government wields significant control over all aspects of society.Mass Surveillance: Extensive surveillance mechanisms are in place to monitor citizens' activities. This includes the widespread use of security cameras, wiretaps, and data collection programs, often justified in the name of national security.Limited Freedom of Speech and Expression: Freedom of speech and expression are heavily restricted. Critical opinions of the government or its policies can lead to censorship, punishment, or imprisonment. Independent media outlets are often silenced or controlled by the state.Political Repression: Opposition parties and political dissent are suppressed. Opposition leaders, activists, and journalists may face arrest, harassment, or even disappearance.Militarization of Police: The police force is heavily militarized, with access to advanced weaponry and equipment. Law enforcement agencies have extensive powers, and their actions are often unchecked.Restrictions on Movement: Citizens may face limitations on their ability to travel freely both domestically and internationally. Checkpoints and roadblocks can be common, and travel permits may be required.Secret Police: A secret police force is often established to monitor and infiltrate perceived threats to the government. These agencies operate covertly and are not subject to normal legal oversight.Suppression of Civil Liberties: Fundamental civil liberties, such as the right to privacy, due process, and protection from arbitrary arrest, may be eroded or suspended.Propaganda and State-Controlled Media: The government controls or heavily influences media outlets, disseminating propaganda that promotes its agenda and suppresses dissenting views.Informants and Citizen Spying: Citizens are encouraged or coerced into reporting on the activities of their neighbors, colleagues, and even family members. Fear of being reported leads to a culture of self-censorship.Limited Access to Information: Access to information is tightly controlled, with censorship of books, websites, and social media platforms. Independent information sources are often blocked.Arbitrary Detention and Torture: People can be detained without due process for extended periods. Torture and mistreatment of detainees may occur in secret detention facilities.Manipulation of Elections: Elections may exist, but they are often manipulated to maintain the ruling party's control. Opposition candidates may be disqualified or face intimidation.Limited Freedom of Assembly: Protests and gatherings are heavily regulated or prohibited. Demonstrators risk arrest, violence, or even deadly force from security forces.Cult of Personality: The leader or ruling party is often glorified and portrayed as infallible. Dissent against the leader is equated with disloyalty to the state. As the crackdown on alleged gang members continues by the government of El Salvador, the slide into a police seems inevitable. In this episode, we continue to hear how the crackdown is being used as a means of revenge and how many innocent people have been been arrested and never heard from again. What accounts for the militarization of the police in the U.S., and how long has it been going on? Julian Go links police militarization with colonial conquest, imperial control, and the racialization of crime and disorder. The domestic effects and implications of the so-called imperial boomerang, Go reveals, have been momentous and longstanding. (Encore presentation.)
