This episode discusses how AI accelerates materials discovery in the chemical industry. While challenges exist—messy data, black box models, and skills gaps—AI enables simulations that once took days on supercomputers to run in seconds on laptops. Young advocates a "crawl, walk, run" approach for implementation, starting with low-stakes trials before full integration. He envisions an "in silico-first" future where materials are screened virtually before physical testing, dramatically reducing R&D timeframes from years to months.

Stephen Gubenia, Head of Detection Engineering for Threat Response for Cisco Meraki, shares his evolution from managing overwhelming alert volumes as a one-person security team to architecting sophisticated automated systems that handle everything from enrichment to containment. Stephen discusses the organizational changes needed for successful AI adoption, including top-down buy-in and proper training programs that help team members understand AI as a productivity multiplier rather than a job threat. The conversation also explores Stephen's practical "crawl, walk, run" methodology for responsibly implementing AI agents, the critical importance of maintaining human oversight through auditable workflows, and how security teams can transition from reactive alert management to strategic agent supervision. Topics discussed: Evolution from manual security operations to AI-powered agentic workflows that eliminate repetitive tasks and enable strategic focus. Development of reasoning models that can dynamically triage alerts, run additional queries, and recommend investigation steps. Automated containment workflows that can perform endpoint isolation and other response actions while maintaining appropriate guardrails. Essential foundations including proper logging pipelines, alerting systems, and detection logic required before implementing AI automation. Human-in-the-loop strategies that transition from per-alert review to periodic auditing and agent management oversight. Organizational change management including top-down buy-in, training programs, and addressing fears about AI replacing jobs. The evolving landscape of law enforcement recruitment and training brings both significant challenges and promising opportunities. As police departments strive to attract and retain new talent, some agencies are shifting away from traditional training models toward approaches that resonate better with Gen Z recruits. In this episode of the Policing Matters podcast, host Jim Dudley speaks with Hank Prim, Supervisory Special Agent and State Law Enforcement Standards and Training Administrator in South Dakota, about South Dakota's approach to law enforcement training, particularly the shift from high-stress, military-style academies to a more collegial and problem-based learning environment. Prim discusses the unique challenges faced by rural law enforcement agencies in recruitment and retention and underscores the importance of building trust within the community by training officers to interact with empathy and professionalism. Prim also shares his views on integrating technology, such as virtual reality, into training to enhance scenario-based learning and better prepare officers for real-world situations.
