This week, Andy hosts Blake Canterbury—Social Entrepreneur, Board Member at Compassion International, and Founder of Purposity Tune in to hear Blake discuss this simple idea of generosity and how most people would help their neighbor if they only knew they were in need. That's the idea that sparked the mission behind the App (and non-profit) Purposity. With Purposity, you can find “Needs” for nearby people, read their stories, and purchase items ranging from a few dollars on up. You'll even get a notification when your package has been delivered. Knowing that you've done something needed for someone else will change your day and it's trajectory. As Blake says… Generosity can be a lifestyle. The world tries to drive generosity away from us by saying we can buy our way to happiness. The reality is you can't buy your way to happiness. When you begin to give your life away, big or small amounts, you'll begin to find it. Download the Purposity App on the App Store and Google Play. Then signup, meet your first need, get your first thank-you message back, set a goal, and share it! Find more at Purposity.com. On today’s edition of The Atlanta Small Business Show we welcome Blake Canterbury, Founder of Purposity, an Atlanta-based not-for-profit that allows its users to connect with members of their community who are in need. Blake and Purposity have been featured in Forbes, People Magazine, the AJC, on The Today Show, and the TEDx stage. The story of Purposity begin when Blake, at the time, was working for an agency in Atlanta and received an email from a homeless liaison asking if he could help develop a tech solution to help children in need at a local school. He did and his first attempt was successful. At that, he realized that there was a problem that needed to be solved and not just for that one school. After conducting research, Blake knew he was on to something and Purposity came to life. Purposity works in the form of an app that can be download readily by anyone wanting to help. As described on their website, Purposity comes from the core belief that humanity finds purpose through generosity. School systems and non-profits in local communities inform Blake and his team of needs in their area. They spread the word to individuals near them who are willing to help. They click a link, see the need, and make a difference for someone in their community. It may be the family next door who lost their home in a fire or the child down the street who you didn’t know needed school supplies. In this segment Jim dives into the startup and continued growth of Purposity with Blake. Tune-in to find out where the company is today, why they choose to develop this as an app, community support they received in their startup, did they secure any funding and where that came from, the impact COVID-19 has had on the company, plans for the future, and to wrap things up, where Blake finds his passion that propels Purposity forward. https://www.myasbn.com/small-business-headlines/this-local-company-started-from-the-core-belief-that-humanity-finds-purpose-through-generosity/

Blake Canterbury is a social innovator, philanthropist, and social media expert. He is also the founder of Purposity, a text messaging service that allows you to give back to those who truly need it the most. On today’s episode, Blake discusses Purposity, how it helps our neighbours in need, and why it’s so easy (and addicting) to use. Key Takeaways: [3:45] Why did Blake decide to create Purposity? [7:20] With a simple click of a button, people can effortlessly help a charity and an organization out with their needs. [8:45] It’s tough for a nonprofit because instead of working together, a lot of time they’re forced to compete with other nonprofits due to lack of resources. [10:10] The beauty of Purposity is that you can see where your dollars go and how it directly impacts and helps an organization. [15:35] If you want a movement to have impact, it has to belong to the people who join it. [17:00] What happens if Purposity isn’t in your town or city currently? [19:35] Blake’s next step is to attract people who have never given back before. He wants to make it so easy that anyone can help. [22:00] It’s fundamentally in our hearts to help our neighbors. [24:45] Blake has a team of copywriters to make the nonprofit or individual person’s story interesting, unique, and funny during their time of need to help engage audiences. [27:00] 90% of people’s needs on the app are met within 12 hours and, of those 90%, 70% are met within the first hour. [28:50] Is Purposity anonymous for those who are requesting help? [31:05] What kind of feedback has Blake received from people who have donated in the past? [32:25] Blake shares an event he witnessed as a teenager that involved a broken-down refrigerator and a well-off family. [35:45] Have faith in human kindness. [36:45] What’s next for Blake? [40:15] Purposity is an app that really meets people where they’re at in a simple and easy way. Mentioned in This Episode: Giving Back Podcast Purposity Blakec Canterbury Blake Canterbury on LinkedIn
