Visit us at shapedbydog.com I sometimes receive comments that some dogs need all 4 quadrants of dog training. But what does that mean, why does it matter for your dog, and what does science tell us? We all need to be aware of the blurred lines between quadrants, so I'm discussing each. Plus, I'm sharing experiences and insights on what unintentional punishment can be for dogs and how to avoid it, what reinforcement really is, and how it's possible to reinforce a dog for behavior you don't want. In this episode, you'll hear: • How the four quadrants of operant conditioning apply to everyday dog training. • An explanation of Positive Reinforcement, Positive Punishment, Negative Punishment and Negative Reinforcement - +R, +P, -P, -R • How to recognize what quadrant you are training in and my experiences. • The importance of reinforcers and using what's reinforcing for your dog. • How I built value for my dog Swagger to watch other dogs work. • Control and lessons from B.F. Skinner. • How negative reinforcement works. • The blurred lines between the quadrants. • Debunking the “we must be alpha” narrative in dog training. Resources: 1. As a matter of fact, they promised me and my buddy Rhow, we would have a hassle-free vacation and true to their word, we did. You see we have been anticipating the day that we can explore the majestic country of Thailand, the land of smiles. So when I realized that this travel agency is highly recommended, we didn't have any second thoughts. We immediately rushed to their office expecting nothing but the best. When we arrived there, we were offered drinks as they showcased different travel itineraries that would suit our budget. They patiently explained the best places of interest, tourist attractions, and other activities that fit our preferences and personality. It didn't take them long to book our accommodation, transportation, and processed everything we need. They even gave us their personal contact information for any questions and clarifications. On our departure date from China, they even gave complimentary meals while waiting to board the plane. The duration of our trip was so smooth, they were very considerate, and efficient. I must admit every penny we spent was worth it.

Hey family, at some point or other all of us have experienced the crippling shame and guilt we feel after knowing what’s best to be done--and ignoring it completely. Some of the greatest scars that I personally have, and that I know others have, are when they knew better and they did wrong anyway. This week we’re going to dive deeper into those moments in life where we’ve done what we knew we shouldn’t have done, and avoided what we knew we could have done. What does it mean to run to the Lord after the guilty verdict is in, and after the shame is heavy? Please join us for our second week of studying Psalm 51—and extend an invitation to your friends. Every one of us has to deal with guilt, shame, and struggles. I look forward to seeing you at 10 am Sunday at 360 Schermerhorn. PLEASE NOTE—After service we will hold one of our twice-annual congregational meetings. This is a great time to catch up on where we are now as a church and where we’re going. If you can’t make our live service, there will be a preview online Saturday at 6 p.m. via Facebook Live (RHOW-BK page) and on Zoom, 472 778 7718, password 0825. Hey family, the holiest time of the Christian year is approaching, and we can't wait to see you at our live services on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. In preparation for this experience of Christ's death and resurrection, we have been in a series that calls us to look deeply at ourselves and our relationship to our savior. This week, Pastor Gus will speak about how God gives each one of us the gift of Faith, to be used to come to Christ but also to trust in God the Father. There are many blessings God has for his children, blessings that remain unwrapped because we hold on to other things so tightly. We can't experience what He has for us until we realize that it is better to give than to receive. Generosity is where it all begins. Join us this Sunday for week 5 of our Lent series. Our live service is Sunday at 10 a.m., and we are making sure all guidelines are met for keeping our space clean and healthy. There will be a preview service online Saturday at 6 pm on Facebook Live (RHOW-Brooklyn page) or on Zoom, 472 778 7718, password 0825. Hey family, in this season of Lent we have been asked to look within and surrender our plans, thoughts, and feelings to God. This week we’ll embrace what repentance is—and what it is not. Having a conscious contact with God and living in daily repentance will lead to greater intimacy with Him. Each week we will be using a devotional study to help in understanding our topic. Here is a link to the seven-week devotional. Those who attend service at RHOW at 10 am Sunday will receive it as a printout. Hey family, In the midst of all that we are dealing with and struggling through, how we can we help each other stay strong and committed to Jesus? As we continue in our Lenten series leading up to Easter, this week we’ll learn about intercessionary prayer--praying deeply and purposefully on behalf of other people. Join us Saturday or Sunday to find out more about what that means and how it works. (Don't forget, Daylight Savings Time begins Saturday night--set your clocks forward one hour.) Each week we are using a devotional study to help in understanding our topic. Here is a link to the seven-week devotional. Hey Family, Several years ago, we came up with how we wanted to describe RHOW's mission. This is how we explain it to anyone who asks: We exist to SHARE the good news of Jesus Christ; HELP hurting people at the point of their need, and EQUIP all to reach others for Christ. In these three ways, we show the love of Christ to all who come to our doors, and we also take his love out to the world. This Sunday we welcome Pastor Tyler Stanton from Trinity Grace Church, who will be speaking to us on evangelism. How often do you SHARE your love of Jesus with another person? I look forward to seeing you at 10 a.m. --Edwin
Hey Family, We've been in a series called "This Is Us," and last week we talked about how we can't be of service to others unless we take out the trash in our own lives. In the picture above I have an old banana peel on my head and a half-eaten sandwich in my pocket. I felt pretty embarrassed--but that's the way we should feel, when we humble ourselves before God. When we confess our sins to him, he grants us forgiveness--and then we need to start making some changes in our lives so that we can serve others in God's name. This week we'll continue with the series. Every once in a while we get into a situation where we wished we had a handbook for how to proceed. Whether it's marriage, raising children, getting through cancer, or even just telling somebody "no," all these things require a level of instruction that sometimes we feel we don't have. This week we're going to spend time looking at where we can get that instruction and what condition our heart needs to be in to receive that instruction. I look forward to seeing you and hope to help us grow in ways that benefit one another and bless the world. Bring a friend! --Edwin

Hey Family, Every one of us has experience with people who talk the talk but don’t walk the walk. It’s always frustrating to deal with that kind of person because we find them hypocritical, difficult to deal with, and just not people we want to be around. But the Bible says we are to be people who don’t just hear the word, but do the word. What does that look like in the 21st century, to do what the Bible says? Come this Sunday as we continue our new series, This Is Us, by talking about how the Bible influences and affects every area of our lives for the better. Invite a friend! --Edwin

Everywhere we go, we look for people, for communities, that can help us through difficult times. The church is that community, where we can unite with others and recognize that we are not made to be solo in our lives, not meant to make big decisions or live life in an isolated way, but rather together. So we going to spend the next few weeks in a brand-new series called This is Us. We’re going to talk about the stuff of life, and how the church is uniquely qualified to help us get through it. And also, how we can become the church that we ourselves would love to be a part of. I’m excited about starting the first new series in quite some time and I can’t wait to see you Sunday at 10 a.m., to see what God has to say to the church through his word. --Edwin

ey Family, In the book of Genesis, Jacob wrestles with an angel until the angel agrees to bless him. But the experience did not leave Jacob untouched. This Sunday we welcome Pastor Will McGee of Cornerstone Baptist Church, who is going to open up this scripture for us. I hope to see you all at 10 a.m., and bring a friend! --Edwin
Have you ever had the experience where you finally got hold of something you'd really been hoping for? Maybe it was something you waited for, something you really expected would be great . . . and then it turns out not to be so great after all? How did that make you feel? Is there anything in this world that will make us truly happy? Come this Sunday as we start a brand-new series called "Searching." I look forward to seeing you at 10 A.M.
Hey Family, We all know that Jesus died on the cross for us. But what exactly does that mean to our daily lives? This Sunday we’ll hear about the Peace, Purpose, and Power that we gain from believing in Christ. With these three gifts, we can face any challenge. Come Sunday at 10 a.m. to learn just how much we have to be grateful for. --Edwin
Hey Family, Throughout the Bible, God speaks frequently about the poor. He does not want those suffering from poverty to be ignored, despised, or forgotten. In this week's message, Begging for Change, Pastor Pedro Rodriguez will look at the ways God directs us to deal with this vulnerable population. There are things that all of us can do. I look forward to seeing you on Sunday at 10 a.m
Hey Family, Anxiety is something that can grab hold of every one of us. Whether we’re concerned about what school we’re going to get into, the state of our marriage, our bodies and what the doctors tell us, anxiety is something that becomes not only part of our lives as human beings, but can be magnified because we live in New York. This week we’re going to pause and look at anxiety from the perspective of the gospel. We will ask God how he would lead us even through difficult, scary moments, out of anxiety and into His arms. I look forward to seeing all of you Sunday at 10 a.m. I think this message can affect us for a long time to come, especially as we continue to grow in Christ. SPECIAL NOTE: Due to road construction, the church building will be closed Monday, June 24. There will be no meetings and no community breakfast. We are sorry for the inconvenience! --Edwin For your calendar: Thursday, June 27, 6 p.m.--PRAYER SERVICE. All are invited!
Hey Family, Many of us have known what it is to take a bad idea too far. For some of us it’s an alcohol addiction, for others it’s going after sex . . . something that we knew wasn’t right, but we did it anyway and then it had its way with our lives, hurting the people around us, leaving us in a place where we were broken and troubled. How does Jesus deal with people who have turned their back on his teaching to such a degree that they are consumed by the very thing they thought would liberate them? Does he confront us by saying “I told you so!” or, “Ha, now you’re trapped in your sin.” Or does he do something that’s so beyond our wildest imagination that it gives us cause to celebrate and worship? Come this Sunday at 10 a.m. as we continue our series JESUS WITH and talk about how Jesus deals with us when we‘ve gone too far. --Edwin
Hey Family, There are moments in life when the reality of our guilt is so oppressive that all we feel is shame. We feel so deeply guilty about what we’ve done that when we see people looking at us, all we can think of is that they know how broken and sinful we are. As a result, we might take on an hard-hearted attitude—that we don’t care what people think, or we don’t even care what God thinks. Or . . . we can run to Christ, and find out that guilt doesn’t create our identity. We can be forgiven and find our identity in something other than the acts we do. This is an important message for all of us—because once in a while we will all be in a position where we act in a way that is beneath our own standards, let alone God’s standards. Come this week to learn how God deals with the guilty, and how to get relief from our shame. I look forward to seeing you Sunday at 10 a.m. --Edwin
We finished our series called When God Shows Up, which I hope illustrated how God makes himself known in the midst of all our circumstances. This Sunday we begin a followup series called JESUS WITH..., in which we'll investigate how Jesus confronts people from different backgrounds in different ways. And that's good news for us, because it gives us the assurance that no matter where we've come from or what position we are in today, Jesus meets us where we are and works on us in the way that will affect us the most strongly. Whether we're one of the powerful, one of the political, or one of the powerless, He is pursuing each one of us with great love and intensity.
Hey Family, Did you know that 1 in 5 New Yorkers struggles with mental illness each year? Not only that, many don't have hope or help in those struggles. Mental illness--including depression and other conditions--isn't just a modern problem. This Sunday we'll learn about a particular person in the Bible who suffered from mental illness, and whose life was completely changed by meeting Jesus. Our good friend Pastor Zac Martin will be our guest speaker. Come hear about how we as a church can provide help for troubled souls. I very much look forward to seeing you this Sunday at 10 a.m.
What is the appropriate response when God shows up in powerful ways? We've been in a series called WHEN GOD SHOWS UP. In the last two weeks we've talked about what God does in times when we experience crisis or doubts. But this week we're going to speak about what *our* response should be. This is so important, because when we have an encounter with God--in scripture, in community, in prayer--He doesn't show up just to do carnival tricks. God's showing up demands a response.
Hey Family, Last week we started a brand-new series called WHEN GOD SHOWS UP. As we continue this Sunday, what I hope you will come to understand is that when we’ve exhausted all of our favors, used up all of our resources, taken all of our time and are at the end of our rope . . . that is the time that God will show up. Last week we talked about how He shows up in the midst of our doubts. This week, it’s how He shows up in moments of great crisis. We’ll be going to the Old Testament and noticing moments where God supernaturally shows up to move in the lives of his people. This is the story of the Christian—that God came down from heaven to earth to act on our behalf. And he didn’t wait until Jesus was born. God has been acting on our behalf for all of history. I look forward to seeing you this Sunday at 10—AND BRING YOUR MOTHER! In fact, invite any mother you know! We will be celebrating Mother’s Day with a roast beef banquet and photo session! --Edwin
Listen in on our Easter Sunday service
Hey Family, In Bible times, a man became known as a prophet if what he proclaimed came to pass. The prophets who spoke for God told the people the truth they needed to hear, even if it hurt. In this Sunday's message, we'll learn about Jesus as Prophet. Our guest pastor will be David Louw, who has been very popular in his previous visits to RHOW. Please join us as we welcome him to continue our series, JESUS UNCOVERED. We will also celebrate Communion together as a church family. I look forward to seeing you at 10 a.m. this Sunday.
I'm so grateful for all the good feedback I've gotten on our current series, JESUS UNCOVERED. It's inspiring to know that people are seeing Jesus in a bigger and more beautiful light, and I've heard how some of you are learning to rejoice at his work in your life. We still have a lot to discuss... the fact is, a series like this could go on for infinity! Whenever we study about who Jesus is, it's going to affect how we relate to our loved ones, handle our finances, deal with our work lives and much more. Don't miss the next message coming up this Sunday. I hope to see you there at 10 a.m.! --Edwin
Many times when our lives feel out of control, or pain seems to overwhelm us, or stress just won't let up, one of the biggest helps we can get is perspective. Having perspective helps us not to collapse under our feelings, but instead see what is real. And nothing gives us a better perspective on our lives than how we see Jesus. If we believe Jesus doesn't care, or is too busy, or doesn't have the power to help us, then we're on our own, and our stress, pain, and despair are justified. But Jesus is much more than that. So far in our series called JESUS UNCOVERED, we've looked at him as king and as servant. This week we look at him as God. This perspective will help us survive even the most difficult times of life. Perhaps you have a friend who's going through a struggle. This Sunday would be a great chance to introduce him or her to Christ. I look forward to seeing you at 10 am.
Hey Family, Have you ever had a relationship with someone for a long time and then found out some new detail about him or her that really opened your eyes? That’s the way I feel about Jesus. The more I get to know him, the more I fall in love with him, and the more that relationship changes my life. In our new series leading up to Easter, JESUS UNCOVERED, we’re going to take a new and different look at Jesus. You will be surprised and marvel at what we discover about his life. I look forward to seeing you on Sunday at 10 a.m.! Please bring a friend or two. --Edwin
Hey Family, In our series, Real Marriage, we have learned that marriage is work. When two sinners say "I do," reality sets in. The origin of marriage is God, so it is Him we look to in order to have a real marriage. Join us this Sunday at 10 a.m. when Pastor Gus closes out the series with a talk on intimacy in marriage. This could be a great time to invite some friends who may be struggling in their own married life. --Edwin
Marriage is a covenant, not a contract. Every covenant—including the new covenant of salvation—has a head, who is ultimately responsible for the covenant. The husband is the covenant head of a marriage; he is responsible for his marriage, his wife, and his kids. Similarly, Christ took that which was not his fault—our sin—and he made it his responsibility on the cross. He is our covenant head. I look forward to seeing you this Sunday at 10 a.m. as our series on marriage continues. --Edwin
Hey Family, You're invited this Sunday to hear a special message from Dr. Craig Fee on the topic of obedience to God. Sometimes we know full well what God wants us to do, or how He wants us to behave. But instead of following instructions, we go our own way and stumble into trouble. It doesn't have to be like that. Dr. Fee is a gifted professor at Nyack College and someone you will want to meet! I look forward to seeing you at 10 a.m. this Sunday. --Edwin
