Mr. Divabetic talks with international Yoga Teacher and Author Rachel Zinman, living with latent autoimmune diabetes of adults (LADA), who shares a guided meditation, "The Mountain Meditation." The Mountain Meditation byJon Kabat-Zinn, encourages us to seek inner stability and peace, even amid unpredictable change and chaos. See if you can sit like the mountain, still and grounded through the changes of weather, time, and seasons, allowing day and night to come and go, accepting change, not resisting it. This meditation is usually done in a sitting position, either on the floor or a chair.  Remember that taking time daily to meditate and connect with your inner self can benefit your overall well-being and diabetes wellness. The Mountain Meditation is a great way to ground yourself and find stability, even amid chaos and uncertainty. Practicing this meditation regularly can help you to better navigate life's ups and downs with greater ease and resilience. So take a deep breath, find a comfortable seat, and allow yourself to be still like a mountain.  In her book, Yoga for Diabetes, Rachel Zinman shares her journey and the hard-won wisdom gained from her own experience of yoga and diabetes. Mr. Divabetic talks with international yoga teacher, and author Rachel Zinman, living with LADA diabetes, who shares a guided meditation, "Compassion Meditation," focusing on self-love and compassion to help jumpstart your year with a new attitude.  There have been many bumps in the road on Rachel's journey with LADA diabetes (latent autoimmune diabetes in adults) related to her initial misdiagnosis. She shares how yoga and meditation helped her to overcome years of frustration and confusion about managing her diabetes.  Rachel's meditation references Tara,  a female deity in both Hinduism and Buddhism. Tara personifies compassion and offers salvation from suffering.  She is thought to have been born of empathy for the suffering world and is regularly invoked for protection, guidance, and deliverance from difficult situations. In Hinduism, she is the second of the ten Mahavidyas, avatars of the great Mother Goddess Mahadevi. In Buddhism, Tara is a savior deity who liberates souls from suffering. According to origin tales, she emerged from the tear of the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara who cried when looking upon the suffering world. She is therefore associated primarily with compassion but can take on many forms to help and protect her devotees. In her book, Yoga for Diabetes, Rachel Zinman shares her journey and the hard-won wisdom gained from her own experience of yoga and diabetes.

Recipe – Oven Roasted Salmon with Fruit Salsa Divabetic was inspired by the late R&B legend Luther Vandross, founded in 2005 by his long-time assistant, Max “Mr. Divabetic” Szadek.  Divabetic, a combination of the word “diabetic” with the letter “V” inserted for Vandross, evokes feelings of power and a positive attitude associated with the great divas Luther loved, like Patti LaBelle.   started Divabetic in 2003. I sold my first Divabetic t-shirt and donated the proceeds to different diabetes nonprofits until Divabetic became a nonprofit in 2005.    I'll be promoting Divabetic's latest mystery podcast, "Tomorrow Is Not On The Menu" available for free on iTunes, BlogTalkRadio and Spotify. This show focuses on sugar addiction and the added sugar in our diets and dispels the myth that weight loss is the be-all and end-all to achieving better diabetes management.    Brief Synopsis: The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic, lands his to-die-for job as a caterer for the nation's hottest health guru, Wendy Wattage's Wellness Retreat on the Jersey Shore. Everything seems low pressure and low calorie until the body of the nasty food critic, Marilyn Macaroni, is found stabbed to death with one of Max's new chef knives. Now he's the prime suspect in a big, fat murder investigation! Can he and his team of friends, diabetes educators, and his nosey Italian mother, Mama Rose Marie, find the killer before the police arrive? Or will he be trading his fruit suit for coveralls with stripes? Weight loss murder never tasted so good.   Starring Mr. Divabetic, Best-Selling Author Tonya Kappes, Mama Rose Marie, Patricia Addie-Gentle RN, CDCES, Maryann Horst Nicolay MEd, NTDR, Kathie Dolgin aka 'High Voltage,' Seveda Williams, Catherine Schuller, Dave Jones, and Lorraine Brooks. Produced by Leisa Chester Weir. Special thanks to our colleague, the multi-talented Wendy Radford. Divabetic's first podcast of the year featuring Rachel Zinman, Arthur Aston, and Patricia Addie Gentle RN, CDCES.  Rachel will be presenting a guided mediation you won't want to miss! Our musical inspiration, R&B singer Teddy Pendergrass, who was not living with diabetes, overcame many obstacles and continued to sing after a car crash in 1982 that left him in a wheelchair. Before the crash, Mr. Pendergrass's explosive, raw voice earned turned him into an international star and sex symbol. His masculinity, passion, and the joys and sorrow of romance were featured in songs such as Close the Door, Love T.K.O, and other hits that have since become classics. Teddy's longtime collaborator Kenny Gamble said, "He had a tremendous career ahead of him, and the accident sort of got in the way of many of those plans." Mr. Pendergrass suffered a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the waist down - still able to sing but without his signature power. The image of the masculine, virile lover was replaced with one that drew sympathy. But instead of becoming bitter or depressed, Teddy Pendergrass created a new identity - that as a role model, Mr. Gamble said. "He never showed me that he was angry at all about his accident," Mr. Gamble said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "In fact, he was very courageous." After extensive physical therapy, he resumed his recording career. He had Top 10 rhythm and blues hits and gold albums into the '90s.  We hope Teddy Pendergrass helps inspire you to focus on the positive in the face of challenges related to managing your diabetes.  Throughout the podcast, we will be featuring music by Teddy Pendergrass courtesy of SONY Music.

For most of us who lived in NYC on September 11, 2001 a serious cloud of anxiety, questioning, and mental turmoil lingered for many years following those unimaginable events. Today's guest believes the events of that day had, not only an emotional impact, but truly impacted her on a cellular level which set her body up for a breakdown that she could never have expected. Rachel Zinman is a child of the world who has lived in Australia for much of her adult life. She is a yogi, a meditation teacher, an Ayurveda practitioner and someone who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as an adult. Rachel and I were able to link up during her recent trip to the States on the east coast leg of her tour promoting her new book which is called “Yoga for Diabetes'.  Our conversation covers a huge amount of ground with topics ranging from how Ayurveda relates to maintaining blood sugar control, all the way through through yoga and breathing techniques. I had an great time sitting down with Rachel and I learned so much from her in the short time we spent together. I know you'll get a lot from this conversation as well. www.thebravestlife.com

In today’s episode, I have a delightful conversation with Rachel Zinman and John Weddepohl, two teachers from the other side of the world, both of whom have a rich connection to ISHTA Yoga as well as other yoga practices. Rachel has turned her attention lately to helping people with diabetes through yoga and a new book. I begin with Cappuccino Q&A, where I answer questions from subscribers on Patreon. Today's question is a follow-up to Episode 16 about how to know how much you should do to help address things going on in the world. Then Rachel discusses her book on diabetes (link below), and how yoga helps in several key ways. One of those ways is coming to terms mentally and emotionally. She credits John and his studies in Amta Vidya, or knowing the Self, with helping her understand this key. John provides a colorful history of his own yoga path that includes early days at the Mani and Alan Finger ashram in South Africa and subsequent studies in India. We discuss ISHTA Yoga; Paramahansa Yogananda and Babaji regarding Kriya Yoga; Ayurveda; the Upanishads; and we get to provide nuance regarding some yoga philosophy to make it real and valuable in our living. Rachel mentions that she and John are doing a workshop at ISHTA on December 10. Details at ISHTAYoga.com. Bios: Rachel Zinman has been practicing since 1983, teaching since 1992 and teaching teachers since 2000. She’s studied with some of the most influential teachers in the west including Alan Finger and Mark Whitwell as well as immersing herself in the study of Vedanta. She is the Author of Yoga for Diabetes, How to Manage your Health with Yoga and Ayurveda. http://bit.ly/diabetesyogabook She writes for many online and in print magazines including Australian Yoga Journal and Australian Yoga Life. www.rachelzinmanyoga.com and www.yogafordiabetesblog.com. Teacher, Musician, Vagabond, Rogue, Rascal, John Weddepohl has always been blessed by his teachers. Opening his first yoga studio in downtown Johannesburg, South Africa in 1969, he then traveled to India and met his Masters through whose grace he assimilated the knowledge of Upanishadic wisdom. Traditional without being traditionalist John teaches Self-knowledge, Atma Vidya the jewel of Advaita Vedanta as well as Siddha Kriya Yoga the yoga of Augustya. He also shares his love of music in the joy and devotion of Kirtan. Feeling pop yoga complicates a simple process John teaches इष्ट माला ISHTA-Mala; a practice for life. http://www.theyogaco.com
