When do you stop and take a breath? If you've listened to Luther Vandross or Tina Turner, or Sting, or Chaka Khan, or Teddy Pendergrass, or Roberta Flack, then you've heard Lisa Fischer sing. If you went to a Rolling Stones concert between 1989 and 2015, you saw Lisa as the band's lead female singer join Mick Jagger on stage. If you've seen her in person, as I've been fortunate to have done so twice, or if you've seen her on YouTube, take over the stage from Tina Turner during It's Only Rock and Roll, or the clips of her on stage with Mick Jagger, you already understand the extraordinary talent that she is linked to. Both of those are in the show notes. And if you've watched 20 Feet from Stardom, then you already know that Lisa is one of the greatest background singers that the world has ever heard. For most of us, those 20 feet might as well be the length of a trip to Mars. For Lisa, who won a Grammy in 1991 and then decided not to take center stage, those 20 feet were a choice. A choice that brings her joy. Lisa is a rare spirit who's had enormous influence and impact. If you see her perform, you're left with a belief that she has a direct connection with your soul. In those moments, she is alive in ways that stretch our understanding of what the word means. Leadership at its heart is the ability to unlock the potential of others, to make them feel more connected. The very best leaders do that by helping us to understand ourselves better, by helping us feel what we had never felt before. Lisa is proof that you don't have to stand center stage to do that. You just have to be honest with yourself about where you get your energy from, and then let that energy flow.

"Life is currency,." Time, energy, and experiences are valuable commodities. Everything we do with our lives has a cost or an investment associated with it. Every decision, action, and moment is equivalent to spending currency—what we give our attention to, what we invest in, and how we prioritize our time shapes our life's value. Many people know Philadelphia for the Declaration of Independence, Rocky, and cheesesteaks. Philly's deep musical history is less familiar, but its influence continues to inspire audiences and artists across the globe. For Carol Muller's graduate-level ethnomusicology field methods class, students focused on documenting the city's Black music history, interviewing figures ranging from Grammy-award winning hip-hop producer Jahlil Beats to Marc Cressman and Anthony Tidd of the Ars Nova Worskhop to radio icon Dyana Williams. The class also produced a podcast based on the book There's that Beat Guide to The Philly Sound by Dave Moore. Each student created an episode based on a chapter of the book, including music samples to make the material more accessible to all audiences. The class was part of the Paideia program at Penn, which is focused on educating the whole student. Paideia funded some of the guests, and other research interviews were supported by a Klein Family Social Justice Grant. Muller, a professor of music, has been teaching the field methods class since 2001. Supported by the Penn Global program, she recently has spent time in Australia working with aboriginal leaders— an experience that she says has helped her re-think the focus of her field methods class. The course now centers around deep listening and working to understand the relationships between humans, non-human animals, and the environment. “To fully grasp human sound production, we need to expand how we see, hear, and know the world,” she wrote in the course description. Hear from Muller and graduate students Kwame Ocran and Yuri Seung about the experience, and listen to some of the material they created, in this episode of the Omnia podcast.***Produced, Narrated, and Edited by Alex ScheinPodcast Logo by Hemani KapoorMusic excerpts by the O'Jays, Teddy Pendergrass, Meek Mill (Pr. I was lucky enough to start my career wrapping cables at a world-class recording studio, surrounded by the best engineers, mixers, and producers in the business. I learned so much just by being “under the roof” and working with those incredibly talented people. Sadly, most of you reading this will never get to ask questions and learn engineering and production from the best in the business because your studio is in your home. Convenient? Yes! You can work whenever you want, and for as long as you want! Isolating? Also, yes! Working by yourself pretty much limits you to learning from YouTube videos. But, that's not nearly as good as having TWO real-deal, hit-making, multi-Grammy-winning, multi-platinum engineers/mixers answer your specific questions in real-time. That's EXACTLY what you're going to do when you join Rob Chiarelli, Michael Havens, and me on this very special episode of TAXI TV, live! Michael engineers Gospel superstar Kirk Franklin's records, and Rob mixes them. They've also (collectively) worked with Justin Bieber, Tori Kelly, Chance the Rapper, Demi Lovato, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Erica Campbell, Big Smo, Andra Day, The Corrs, Public Enemy, Jesse McCartney, LeeAnn Rimes, Will Smith, Danny Elfman, Christina Aguilera, Teddy Pendergrass, The Temptations, The Four Tops, and many, many more!
Arriving in Philadelphia after deejaying in her native New York and Washington D.C., where she was known for a time as “Ebony Moonbeams,” Dyana Williams established the popular radio show “Love on the Menu” for radio station WDAS and later Soulful Sundays for Classix 107.9. The latter show lasting for 12 years before signing off for the last time in 2020. Even with her luminous on-air career, Dyana's contributions behind the scenes have been even more impactful. Formerly married to music producer Kenny Gamble (Gamble & Huff), Williams has long been associated with the “Sound of Philadelphia” (Patti LaBelle, McFadden & Whitehead, Teddy Pendergrass, etc.) and has produced documentaries, founded and led organizations and mentored countless emerging artists, a passion that she continues to pursue. But perhaps her most lasting gift to us is her role in the founding of Black Music Month. Its initial recognition in 1979 was the beginning of a process that Dyana would shepherd until it was written into law by congress and proclaimed first by President Clinton in 2000 and again by Presidents Obama and Biden. Read more about Dyana in Issue No. 7 of AphroChic magazine.

GRAMMY® Award Winning Multi-Instrumentalist, Producer, Songwriter and Arranger ~Philly Int'l, MFSB, Gamble & Huff Tribute to the Songwriter, Musician, Bobby Eli (1946-2023)Intro Music ~ TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia) '73. Composed by Kenneth Gamble and Leon HuffMusic by MFSB , Vocals by The Three Degrees(C) 1973 TSOP/Philadelphia International Records, Inc.My Music Flashback Series continues this week featuring the genre of R& B. Soul & Funk.It can be a great tribute to a music artist when their style can influence current pop culture for century's & decades. The genre of Soul, R & B & Funk is taken for granted today & the influence is heard & seen in grooves, style & fashions most of todays' pop artists. However, the original recording artists truly paid dues to get in the position to not only become recording artists, but to write & produce their work. At that time, some of the artists who created a new innovative style had the challenge of the music executives not understanding the genre, and some even refusing to promote the compositions. Today we call this music - classics & the artists trailblazers. My guest this week in one of them. Bobby Eli is a Grammy Award Winning, internationally acclaimed Grammy Winning Record Producer, Engineer, Songwriter, Arranger and Multi-Instrumentalist. Bobby was a founding member of the famed Philadelphia studio group, MFSB. If the music is Philadelphia International, Gamble & Huff / TSOP. Bobby's music is more than likely on it. His signature guitar licks can be heard on countless gold and platinum hit recordings by artists such as: Chris Brown, Jay Z, George Clinton, Elton John, David Bowie, Hall and Oats, The Jacksons, MFSB, The Ojay's, Teddy Pendergrass, The Stylistics, Lou Rawls,Salsoul Orchestra, Patti Labelle, Phyllis Hyman, B.B. King, Dixie Hummingbirds, Billy Paul, The Spinners, Johnny Mathis, Deniece Williams, Wilson Pickett, Dusty Springfield, Nancy Wilson, and many other wonderful artists too numerous to mention. As a songwriter and producer Eli was responsible for such monster hits as the Grammy winning number one song, “Love Won't Let Me Wait”, as recorded by Luther Vandross, “Sideshow” and “Three Ring Circus” by Blue Magic, “Just Don't Want To Be Lonely” by the Main Ingredient, the first two albums by: “Atlantic Starr”, self titled and “Straight to the Point”, the Grammy nominated album: “Love Niecy Style” by Deniece Williams, Rose Royce's number one U.K. hit single “Magic Touch” and their album” Music Magic”. Bobby was responsible for the Jackie Moore number one dance classic,” This Time Baby”, the number one international hit singles “Zoom” by Fat Larry's Band and “Love Town” by Booker Newberry III.Artists as diverse as Luther Vandross, BeBe & CeCe Winans, Shaggy, Regina Belle, The Whispers, Isaac Hayes, The Dells, Sister Sledge, Englebert Humperdink, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes and an array ofothers have recorded Bobby's songs.Bobby now owns and operates The Grooveyard @ Studio E, a recording facility in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania.
