Careers rarely follow the path we expect. In this episode, I'm joined by Rachel Abad to talk about the twists, turns, and unexpected experiences that ultimately led her to founding her own communications consultancy.Growing up in regional North Queensland, Rachel always knew she wanted to leave her hometown and build a career beyond its boundaries. While law was her original plan, missing the grades led her into a Communications degree instead, a decision that would shape the rest of her career.Through internships, she discovered a love of teamwork, fast-paced environments, and working to deadlines. After a challenging start to her job search, Rachel landed a role in a small agency working with Telstra licensees, which eventually led to positions with a Telstra master licensee and later Telstra's head office.Along the way, she developed expertise in stakeholder management, communications, and navigating complex environments, skills that would later transfer seamlessly into infrastructure, rail projects, and community engagement work in Melbourne. But like many people, Rachel's career wasn't without challenges.During COVID, years of pressure and overwork caught up with her. Burnout, hospitalisation, and a diagnosis of intracranial hypertension forced her to reassess her relationship with work, success, and identity. Our conversation explores:✅ Building a career when the path isn't clear✅ The value of internships and early career experiences✅ Stakeholder management and transferable skills✅ Burnout, recovery, and redefining success✅ When work becomes too much of your identity✅ Starting a business and overcoming fear✅ Finding purpose and meaning in your work✅ Why nobody really has it all figured outRachel also shares the story behind founding Looped In Communication, her audience-led research and communications consultancy, and why understanding people sits at the heart of effective communication. This is an honest conversation about career detours, resilience, burnout, entrepreneurship, and the reality that most successful careers are built one step at a time.To connect with Rachel Website: looped-in.com.au LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rachel-abad-59303452/Can you also find episodes on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@EmmaGrahamCareerCoach/videosYour host, Emma Graham, Career Coach and ex-recruiter, is here to help you with:

Hey guys, welcome back to another episode of The Anchored by the Sword Podcast. Today's conversation is heavy. But it's also one filled with honesty, tenderness, and hope. And if you've walked through grief, loss, trauma, suicide loss, dementia, or simply wondered where God is in the middle of unimaginable pain…I think this episode will meet you there.Today I'm joined by my friend Rachel Dawn. Rachel and I connected online years ago as fellow Ohio girls, eventually met in person at a ministry conference, and I still have the signed copy of her first book from back in my launch team days. And you guys…Her story is one that will stay with you.Rachel shares about surviving the loss of her brother to suicide in 2021 while she was only three weeks postpartum—all while slowly losing her father to dementia at the same time. Imagine:A newborn.Sleep deprivation.Traumatic grief.Public news coverage.FBI involvement.Dementia.And trying to breathe through all of it.It was simply…Too much for one person to carry. And honestly, one of the biggest takeaways from this conversation was hearing Rachel say:“It was too much for one person to hold at one time.”I think some of you need permission to hear that too.In this episode we talk about: -Surviving suicide loss -The complicated emotions of grief—especially anger and rage -Therapy after trauma and why seeking help matters -Walking through postpartum struggles while grieving -Losing someone slowly through dementia while mourning someone suddenly -Why grief heals in layers—not overnight -Learning to be gentle with yourself -The pressure to “be okay” too soonRachel also shares about her upcoming book that is tentatively titled, Reads Like Fiction, which is built from raw grief journals, motherhood journals, and years of healing. And I love reminding each of you that:You are healing… and you are healed. Both can be true.Friend—If grief has made you feel unseen…If trauma has convinced you healing is impossible…If you're angry…If you're tired…Please hear me:God is not rushed with your healing. And neither should you be.Listen now and share this episode with the person who needs to hear this message!Bio:Rachel Dawn met and married her “prince charming” young (as many small-town girls do), and embarked on an exciting life, certain she was destined for success and happiness. Then, it all fell apart.By 25, she found herself divorced, discouraged, disenchanted, and starting over. The lessons she learned during this time allowed her to rebuild her life, regain her confidence, and reignite her dreams. (You can read this whole story in her book, Now What: A Story of Broken Dreams and the God Who Restores Them). In 2021, she was promoted to mom. But, just three-and-a-half weeks later, her only brother died by suicide. She has spent the years since studying grief and the fallout that comes from such a traumatic loss. She writes and speaks with raw transparency and vulnerability, telling impactful stories from her own life. While reading or listening, it feels as if you're chatting one-on-one over coffee with a friend. Her journey and words have inspired countless others not only to persevere but also to heal and thrive through grief and grieving.Today, she has a wonderful husband, an adorable son, two accidental cats, and a mission to help others find hope and freedom after devastating pain.Anchor Verses:Psalm 34:18Psalm 147:3Connect with Rachel:Website: https://racheldawnwrites.comIG: https://www.instagram.com/racheldawnwrites/FB: https://www.facebook.com/racheldawnwrites***We love hearing from you! Most brands have worked with an agency that felt like an external vendor. Rachel Leslie is building something different. As the founder and editor-in-chief of Lāer Studio, Rachel has spent years developing a hybrid creative partner model that embeds her copywriting team directly into the brands they support - from their internal Slack channels to their campaign briefs. With clients like Away, Zola, Avocado Green Mattress, and FILA, she's seen firsthand what changes when a creative relationship goes long-term and the brand finally has a creative partner they can actually lean on. In this episode, Rachel breaks down how she structures her team, how embedded support makes a difference to her clients during high-pressure moments, and how she keeps healthy boundaries without sacrificing the partnership model. She also shares what's evolving with agencies and in-house creative teams in 2026 and beyond. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) are traumatic events that occur in childhood and affect your sense of safety. ACEs have been found to be higher in prevalence among those who struggle with food and body image. As the experience of safety diminishes, the likelihood of binge eating increases. This is why you can't shame yourself for your food behaviors. They are not your fault. You've been made to believe that your food choices are your decision and that if you can't “control” yourself with food, then that is your fault. Yet, this couldn't be further from the truth. Your food and body image behaviors are a response to how your body is digesting your life experiences, not something you're actively choosing or out of a lack of willpower, or self sabotage. In this week's episode, I chat with Rachel Hobbs, Clinical Dietitian, Personal Trainer and Certified Therapist about: A compassion centered focused approach to nutritionHow early childhood experiences affect your food interactionsThe role of shame in food behaviorsHow the nervous system and past trauma shapes food behaviorsSeeing nutrition through a more nuanced perspectiveYou can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/the-impact-of-food-trauma-on-your-eating-behaviorsI hope that this episode reminds you to meet yourself with compassion these next couple of weeks as you navigate friends, food, and family this holiday season. At the Maximum Law Conference, Rachel McGarry shares practical strategies for law firms to move from constant chaos to efficient, proactive operations. Drawing on her experience in estate planning and legal tech, Rachel emphasizes identifying root problems before adopting new technology. As a law firm, it is important to understand the recurring problems that occur before you implement solutions. Law firms are busy and chaotic places, with fires starting up everywhere. It is the nature of the field. As an owner, you need to shift your mindset to that of an engineer. You need to create sustainable solutions that will provide predictable success and growth without all the overwhelm. Doing this involves a few things. First, you need to create a blueprint to figure out what your firm needs. This will allow you to create a framework that will help form your vision. From there, you will find out what your frictions are that are causing fires for your firm which will lead to designing your solution.Rachel provides listeners with steps to take to see immediate results. One thing is to track the fires happening in your firm for 2 weeks. Get the whole team involved where everyone tracks the fires they are dealing with. You will be able to determine the patterns that are happening and can set one, measurable goal to overcome them.. Another step to take is auditing your clients at least once a month. This is a way to ensure there is good client communication frequently to update them on their case.Take a listen to learn more!00:44 Understanding recurring problems before implementing solutions2:41 Outlining a step-by-step framework for designing workflows7:33 Choosing tech tools only after systems are designed13:51 Steps for immediate law firm improvementTune in to today's episode and checkout the full show notes here. What really happens when someone passes away—and are you (or your family) prepared to handle it? In this episode of Women's Money Wisdom, Melissa Joy, CFP®, sits down with Rachel Donnelly, founder of Afterlight and author of Late to Your Own Funeral, to unpack the messy, often overwhelming world of death administration.Rachel shares her personal story of becoming executor for both her parents' estates—while working full-time and raising young children—and how that experience inspired her to build a business helping others avoid the same chaos. Together, Melissa and Rachel dive into the real work that goes beyond writing a will: handling assets, updating beneficiaries, navigating probate, and keeping bills paid when no one's watching. They discuss why so many women delay estate planning, the hidden landmines (like untitled assets and digital accounts), and how you can start untangling this intimidating topic with simple, practical steps. The conversation also tackles how to bring up these sensitive issues with family, why “co-anything” can backfire, and how to avoid turning a loved one's legacy into a logistical nightmare.Key Takeaways:Estate planning isn't just about legal documents—it's about full asset management and communication.Women are more likely to delay estate planning, often because they don't know where to start.Probate horror stories highlight why comprehensive planning matters.Digital assets (social media, crypto, email) need to be included in your plan.Choose roles (executor, trustee) carefully—co-roles can create more problems than they solve.Even imperfect action now is better than procrastinating and risking chaos later.Having the tough conversations with family now can save heartache and confusion later.Whether you're starting from scratch or fine-tuning your existing plan, this episode will give you the confidence to take action—because death is inevitable, but an administrative nightmare doesn't have to be.Learn more & connect with Rachel: Website: www.myafterlight.com Instagram: @myafterlight LinkedIn: Rachel Donnelly Book: Late to Your Own FuneralThe previous presentation by PEARL PLANNING was intended for general information purposes only. If you've ever struggled to make a profit while serving nonprofits, you're going to love this conversation. Our good friend Rachel Bearbower is back to share how she went from running a membership that was literally losing money every month to commanding $30,000+ for her automation services. And yes, she's still serving the sector we all love!Rachel opens up about the emotional journey of letting go of her Small Shop Strategies membership (it took her over a year to fully grieve it) and the scary but exhilarating process of building the Nonprofit Automation Agency through pure trial and error. In classic Rachel fashion, she doesn't hold back about the messiness - including the website crash mid-pitch webinar that accidentally led to creating a second business!I'm still blown away by her transformation. The Rachel who once fought for every $100 membership fee now confidently tells prospective clients on sales calls: "We are very good at what we do" - and they believe her. And they should! She's gone from barely covering expenses to making more in two months than she did in all of 2023.Highlights:Done-for-you is a game-changer. Rachel realized that nonprofit leaders don't want to learn automation - they just want someone to handle the "hot mess of tech" for them. And they'll pay premium prices for it!Real talk on following up. Rachel followed up with one prospect for 109 days before they signed. Her secret? She BCCs herself on every proposal email, then snoozes it weekly as a reminder to check in. Don't assume silence means "no"!Your referral network is gold. A whopping 44% of Rachel's revenue comes from referrals. She pays 10% commission to fellow consultants who send clients her way - making it a win-win for everyone. It's okay to not have it all figured out. Rachel built this incredibly successful business by flying the plane while building it - no grand strategy, just constant iteration based on what worked with real clients.Resources Mentioned:Nonprofit Automation Agency: https://www.nonprofitautomationagency.com/ Kit (formerly ConvertKit): https://kit.com/?gad_source=1 "Letters to Randy": http://letterstorandy.com/ Find Us Online: https://www.confessionswithjessandcindy.comConnect with Rachel:Website: https://www.nonprofitautomationagency.com/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rachelbearbower Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/smallshopstrategies/ Connect with Cindy:Cindy Wagman Coaching: cindywagman.comFractional Fundraising Network: fractionalfundraising.co/LinkedIn: ca.linkedin.com/in/cindywagmanConnect with Jess:Out In the Boons: outintheboons.meLinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/jesscampbelloutntiheboons/
Rachel Faulkner Brown's story is one of pain, resilience, and ultimate freedom. After losing her first husband to an aneurysm just days after September 11, Rachel navigated the deep waters of grief and loss at the age of 24. Despite the heartbreak and confusion, her faith in God kept her anchored through it all. But Rachel's journey didn't stop with her loss. Two years later, she remarried and began a new chapter of life with her second husband, Blair, and their children. However, tragedy struck again when Blair died in a plane crash, leaving Rachel to grieve once more.In this episode, Rachel shares her powerful journey of healing, the importance of confronting and releasing deep-rooted secrets, and how her story is now helping other widows find freedom and restoration through her ministry, Never Alone.Takeaways:1. Healing Begins When We Face Our PainRachel's story teaches us that healing can only begin when we confront our emotional pain, rather than suppressing it. Secrets may seem to protect us, but they only keep us stuck. By addressing the hurt, Rachel found freedom and was able to move forward with a renewed purpose in her life and ministry.2. Faith Transforms Our Grief into PurposeRachel's experience highlights the importance of leaning into faith even during the darkest times. In the midst of her grief, she realized that her story wasn't just for her—it was meant to help others. God took her deepest pain and turned it into a ministry that now helps other widows heal and find hope.3. Ministry Is Born Out of Brokenness Rachel's ministry, Never Alone, started in the wake of her grief. What began as a small retreat for widows grew into a life-changing ministry that helps women process their losses, embrace healing, and step into a new season of hope. Rachel encourages us that even in our darkest moments, God is preparing us to be a light for others.Rachel's journey reminds us that no matter how deep our pain, God's grace is always available to heal, restore, and transform. May her story encourage you to trust in God's faithfulness and find hope even in the most difficult seasons.Bio:Rachel Faulkner Brown tragically lost two husbands before she was thirty-one years old. Out of Rachel's healing, she founded Never Alone Widows, the largest Christian widows' ministry 501c3 in the country. Never Alone Widows currently has 70 chapters from California to Maine and reaches thousands of widows daily through the organization's social media platforms, their partnerships with the Gary Sinise Foundation, and Bob Goff's Love Does foundation. Never Alone Widows has published the only video series specifically designed to support widows on RightNow Media, the world's largest library of video-driven Bible study resources. Rachel also cowrote Father's House, an eight-week, video-driven Bible study that has helped thousands of women find freedom from their past and grace for their future. As a United States Air Force Gold Star widow, Rachel has shared her story nationally hundreds of times through Folds of Honor, a nonprofit organization helping to provide educational scholarships to the families of fallen and disabled service members and first responders. Rachel's greatest ministry is her family, her husband, Rod, and her children, Davis and Campbell. Together they reside in Atlanta, Georgia.Anchor Verses:Genesis 50:20Connect with Rachel:Website: www.RachelFaulknerBrown.com IG: https://www.instagram.com/rachelfaulknerbrownNever Alone Widows: https://www.neveralonewidows.com***We love hearing from you! Welcome to week one of the Summer of Mentorship! This summer we are answering your questions with guests from past episodes. We are starting off with an episode from April of 2020 (ep 280) with Rachel Macy Stafford, the founder of Hands Free Mama. Rachel's Hands Free Mama mentality is all about finding balance in a media-saturated, perfection-obsessed world. And it's about seizing the little moments that life offers us to engage in real and meaningful interaction. She shares a realization that she was not connected with her own people. How she was believing a lie that she needed to hide certain parts of herself, the messy parts, the imperfect parts, in order to be loved and accepted. Her “ah-ha” moment came when she vulnerably shared this belief with her daughter and found acceptance. “Opening that door to being human actually brings us closer together. Then we can connect from that place of 'I'm struggling' and that doesn't mean there's something wrong with me. That doesn't mean I need to hide it. It means I need to reach out and talk to someone about this so we can work together to see how we might go forward.” From that place she has chosen to extend that same acceptance and found real connection. Which then helps keep the lines of communication open as they grow up. “This is all about redefining what our role is as a parent. It is not the authoritarian model anymore. It is the guide, the truth teller and the encourager. Not the enforcer, not the half listener, not the critic. That those roles are only going to get us further and further from each other when the idea is right now we need to come closer.” Connect with Rachel: Website: handsfreemama.com Facebook: facebook.com/TheHandsFreeRevolution Instagram: @handsfreerevolution Twitter: @handsfreemama FREE LIVE LOVE NOW LISTENING PLAN: Click here for special 7-day listening plan for Don't Mom Alone Listeners Links Mentioned: Live Love Now [BOOK] Only Love Today [BOOK] Amy McCready--Positive Parenting Solutions Pre-order Bonuses--21-Day Self-Care Listening Plan AND 4 Downloadable Tools for Connection Ask “Heart Questions vs. Performance Questions” Practice phrases that take you “From Conflict to Calm” Consider if you are an “Easy-to-Be-Around Adult” Exclusive Phone Lock Screen - “Connecting by Protecting” Summer of Mentorship Podcast Club Discussion Questions: What kind of parenting model did you grow up with? How has that model influenced your parenting today? Do you see your role as more of an enforcer or an encourager? What are some problem areas for your child(ren) that you can bring them in on finding a solution? Could taking the time to listen to them make a difference in how you both respond? What is one thing you'd like to implement this week from Rachel's talk?
