Our guests this week are Jan Scott and Diana Phillips who host the Windrose World retreats, They are on a mission to debunk the myths and stigmas that surround menopause. We had such a fun chat with these two fabulous women! They share a lifetime of friendship and are now creating space for menopausal women around the world. After 30+ years of film production in Hollywood with 20 of those teaching yoga, Jan Scott has learnt how to let the pendulum swing between chaos and Zen. At 30, Jan was producing films in Hollywood and living on the beach in Malibu. She spent a month in Kenya with the Maasai tribes which triggered an obsession with saying ‘yes' to the “unknown adventure”. Diana Phillips grew up wanting to join the circus. When she graduated with a degree in Journalism from the University of Kentucky she did just that and devoted her career to the 3-ring big top of advertising. As a creative director she made campaigns at basecamp in the Himalayas, visited Milan and Hamburg and the deserts of Morocco. Practicing Yoga converted a life of chaos and excess to one of balance. Yoga became even more of a support when Diana's menopause hit. Diana had every symptom, every day for about 8 years. Their combined love of yoga and a commitment to empower women through menopause has driven these two meno warriors to run beautiful retreats around the world. Jan & Diana tell us about the Menopause conversation Stateside and how they plan a US ‘tour' of retreats for 2024 with Naomi Watts I am Stripes. They tell us about their own Menopause Journeys and we learn about the difficulties of hot flushes and menopause symptoms in the corporate world. They have some great tips for us for running our own ‘More than a Menopause Seaside Retreat too' Lots of laughs and conversation that will resonate with most menopausers. Doreen Virtue is a former famous psychic medium and New Age guru who made and spent millions encouraging people to trust in themselves and channel angels and deities to live their best lives. Doreen came to Christ in 2017 and immediately left the New Age and now gives key examples of the dangerous demonic influences behind popular trends like yoga. Doreen also says that many well-meaning people end up getting hooked into the New Age deception for innocent reasons like health and wellness, but reminds us that the New Age religion is a progressive disease that eventually takes us to a deep level of depravity.   TAKEAWAYS Doreen previously made appearances on shows like Oprah and The View when she was a practicing New Age guru. Common New Age dangers include crystal healing, the Enneagram, essential oils, angel worship, and automatic writing. Yoga is about glorifying the self - it is predominantly a narcissistic act rooted in Eastern mysticism. Doreen also says that many well-meaning people end up getting hooked into the New Age deception for innocent reasons like health and wellness, but reminds us that the New Age religion is a progressive disease that eventually takes us to a deep level of depravity. TAKEAWAYS Doreen previously made appearances on shows like Oprah and The View when she was a practicing New Age guru Common New Age dangers include crystal healing, the Enneagram, essential oils, angel worship, and automatic writing Yoga is about glorifying the self - it is predominantly a narcissistic act rooted in Eastern mysticism Her book, Deceived No More: How Jesus Led me out of the New Age and into His Word, tells of her life-changing journey

Some folks might have missed this important episode where I talk with Noah Weisman about the problem of so-called gurus who bypass the real issues of today's society, opting to use spirituality as an excuse to not take responsibility for their actions that bring harm to others. One such example is our former teacher Raghunath Cappo. Listen in on our discussion as we try to bring attention to the real work of building an anti-racist society. For today's episode, we have a special guest, Noah Weisman. A little bit about him: growing up biracial in the predominantly white communities of Vermont, he began his study of the body and mind through mixed martial arts in 2003. Diving headfirst into the physical, mental and energetic practices, he discovered a wealth of knowledge in the philosophy of yoga and became a certified yoga teacher. He and his wife, Priscilla Rybicki founded Sukha Yoga School in 2015, and continue to offer classes and training all over the world. In today's conversation, he shares some insights about his racial relationship between his friends/colleagues and social justice. We also talk about the dangers of popular and visible white teachers who fail to see the racism and sexism of their ways, perpetuating the very problem we are trying to solve, including one specific teacher, Ray Cappo. These so-called gurus who bypass their own spiritual teachings only create more harm for communities of color. In this podcast, we explore the history of yoga and look at scripture to see whether yoga is something we as Christians should think twice about before practicing. Practicing Yoga and studying the Enneagram have given her the tools for cultivating self-compassion and kindness towards herself, and she is so grateful to have stumbled upon both!  If you are an Enneagram 1 or Reformer perhaps spend some time meditating on these questions: 1)Tell me a yoga pose that helps you feel less rigid and helps you to move towards a feeling of freedom in your body?2) When do you get most caught up in perfectionism? 3) Were you a serious child? How is the Enneagram helping you be a more playful version of yourself? 4) Enneagram 1s sometimes think of things as right or wrong or good or bad. How is the Enneagram helping you to embrace mystery or the grey of life? 5) Ones often have a strong inner critic. What is your self-talk like and what helps you to be kinder to yourself? 6) What helps you be more optimistic and joyful?  --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/christy001/support

Tara brings a revolutionary approach to being, moving and healing to inspire millions around the world with her relatable perspective with regards to yoga, meditation and movement.    Now before you press pause or exit because you aren't interested in yoga, I invite you to continue to listen to the “Yoga Rebel.”   The New York Times recognizes Tara as such because of her unconventional approach to this sometimes intimidating subject. She isn't into the dogma of yoga or forcing you to do a bunch of poses or making you chant. Again, if that's your jam, no judgment from either one of us. I would say that for most people their resistance to yoga is because of the time commitment, inflexibility, feeling insecure, not feeling aligned with the spirituality aspect, etc.   After hearing today's episode, I can promise you that these challenges will be diminished as Tara's approach is efficient, relatable, empowering and practical for anyone looking to reap the incredible benefits of yoga. Yoga can reduce stress, relieve tension, improve your confidence, help you sleep better, gain flexibility and so much more.    The focus of our discussion today centers around what the average person can do if they want to get started with yoga and incorporate it into their daily routine or regular workout program. We break down the many walls or barriers that I mentioned previously and why spending just a few minutes a day practicing yoga or even taking one breath can be beneficial. Tara shares why “the better you move” within the poses matters more than how far you stretch. We discuss what you can do to reduce tension and stiffness and Tara shares what she does to help manage her stress. One of the most popular questions I get asked is, "Can I practice yoga as a Christian?"The short answer: YES!There is of course much more to it than that, but my friend and beloved yoga teacher, Johanna Burke, is here today to help us untangle this question. In this episode, we dive deep into the history of yoga and its roots in India. Johanna teaches us about how yoga is not just asana, or "physical practice," but a way of being; not unlike our Christian faith. While yoga itself is not a religious practice, it is spiritual in its roots and, having developed in India, it is largely connected to the practice of Hinduism. There is often a fine line between honoring yoga and its roots while connecting it to our faith, and co-opting and appropriating yoga into Christian/western culture. We dig into all of this, really working to untangle how we can both honor yoga's and honor the ways it can deepen our own spiritual, faith-based practices. Johanna also eloquently addresses the issue of the way many yoga practitioners claim that yoga can "cure" things like depression and anxiety. Jo tells her own story of coming to realize why saying things like this is harmful, and offers us a  healthier way of understanding the benefits yoga offers in terms of our mental and emotional well-being.Whether you are a seasoned yoga practitioner, or someone who has never set foot in a yoga studio, this one is for you....Johanna Burke is a 500 hour ERYT Certified Yoga Teacher and Reiki Practitioner. Johanna started practicing yoga to relieve stress, but it became so much more. She became a teacher to bring to others what yoga gave her—self-confidence and a physical and mental strength that she didn’t realize was there. In her classes, you’ll work hard and get a nice, long savasana. Naturally quiet, teaching brings out a playful side in Johanna where she loves to laugh and have fun. When she’s not teaching, you can find her with her nose in a book or writing. She loves to spend time with her pup, Molly, and her family. You can find Jo online at her website or on Instagram.

Onward Podcast guest Praveena Lakshmidurai learned to calm her mind and dig into her intuition by practicing yoga. Praveena is an Indian origin Australian who currently calls Brisbane home. She is passionate about yoga because it transformed her life and helped her get through a tough patch becoming both mentally and physically stronger.  Although Praveena grew up practicing yoga as a child, she stopped when she moved from India to Australia to pursue higher education. Then, when her life fell apart, Praveena reintroduced yoga into her life. Yoga helps Praveena practice acceptance and forgiveness as well as release anger and other negative emotions. Furthermore, yoga is Praveena’s passion and she’s the founder of the Focus and Flow Yoga Tribe.    Praveena stands out from being just another yoga teacher, because she has adopted the yoga lifestyle off the mat. Join Praveena’s tribe and embark on your own spiritual journey of self- discovery that works from the inside out. Praveena doesn’t know where yoga will take her. She just knows it will always be a part of her life. Finally, listen and learn how you can benefit from making yoga part of your life.   Episode Highlights: First, Emily and Praveena talk about how they met.  Then Praveena shares her story. Praveena grew up in India where yoga was an integral part of her life.  Then, at 22 years old, Praveena moved to Australia to pursue higher education. Next Praveena explains how she became stuck in the rat race and stopped practicing yoga. Ultimately, she hit rock bottom when her marriage fell apart. Divorce took toll on her mental and physical health. She started feeling worthless and was filled with negative emotions and doubt. In addition, her career was not going the way she wanted it to. Finally, Praveena knew that she needed to make a change. It was then that Praveena reintroduced yoga into her life. And she started to notice subtle but lasting changes in her life. In India, yoga was part of her life, as was family and community.  Also, yoga helped her family stay connected in community.  Praveena longed for that feeling once again When she started practicing yoga in Australia, it was in a gym class and that was not the way she practiced in India.  She decided to start her own yoga practice and create community by founding the Focus and Flow Yoga Tribe. Praveena shares her unstoppable dream. Praveena’s 10 year old son and his friends practice yoga as well.  Next Praveena shares some deep breathing techniques and explains the importance of the breath.  Also, yoga helps us get in touch with God, the Divine, the Universe, our authentic self. Also, a little bit of practice every day goes a long way. Next Praveena explains how yoga can help us be present and more aware. After that, Praveena explains how her life has changed since she started practicing yoga again.  Also, we can take yoga philosophies off the mat.  Yoga is so much more than the poses.  In addition practicing yoga helps with self reflection and enables us to shine from within.  Also, the only zen you're going to find on top of a mountain is the zen you take with you.  “Bhagavad Gita" is the Bible of yoga philosophy which is guidebook to living your best life. And you can find that zen no matter where you go.  Our body needs movement but our mind needs stillness. It’s important to find a good yoga teacher, one with whom you connect. What can people expect if they join Pravena's Focus and Flow Yoga Movement? Finally, yoga is for everyone. - Practicing yoga is proven to significantly improve mental and physical health. In today’s edition of That’s life, yoga teacher Nguyen Hieu will share several useful tips for doing yoga at home. Nguyen Hieu is currently the general director of Zenlife Yoga Vietnam, which specializes in training yogis. She is the first Vietnamese online yoga instructors. Hieu said the first thing you need to do in order to practice yoga at home is to create a space for it. “You need to find a space to practice yoga at home. It’s a good idea to make it a green space with some trees. Light up some candles, use essential oils, and turn on some gentle music. And don’t forget that you need your own mat for doing yoga,” she said. Even when you do yoga at home, you need to warm up to avoid injuries when performing certain movements, Hieu recommended. If you practice alone, you might find your motivation lagging, as opposed to when you do yoga in a group. No matter what, though, you should practice it regularly, Hieu added: “Trust yourself. Don’t give up. When you first start, spend at least 15 minutes per session. Gradually increase your practice up to 60 minutes.” Eating habits can considerably influence yoga practice. Numerous yogis advise that you should follow certain basic principles, like only eating when you are hungry. Don’t eat when you are not calm and relaxed because it will negatively affect your digestion. The time between meals must be long enough. Don’t eat too much! Your stomach should never be completely full. ¼ of its space should be for water. Another ¼ is for the passage of air. Such a balance is great for digestion. Don’t eat late at night before going to bed. Relaxing after doing yoga is necessary. Spend the last 15 minutes to relax and refresh. Loosening your body and muscles is the fastest way for muscles and joints to recover after practice. In addition, women should cool off their body to release the heat accumulated during yoga to get the body back to normal. “At the end of the exercise, lay down at a relaxed position for 5 to 10 minutes to refresh and recover your energy,” said Nguyen Hieu. Yoga has become more and more popular in Vietnam thanks to its health benefits. It helps practitioners reduce stress, chronic pain, and depression. Doing yoga also increases flexibility and improves muscle strength. 55-year-old Nguyen Anh Phuong said that she has been practicing Hatha yoga, which focuses on the control of spirit, air, and body. “I have been practicing yoga for 7 months. It has helped me improve my health significantly. I’ve learned to take deep and consistent breaths to help the blood vessels circulate and conduct oxygen better and tone up my muscles,” she said. Diagnosed with breast cancer, Ms. Dang Thi Lac Quy of Nam Dinh province was in deep physical and mental disrepair. She found motivation to live on and recover thanks to doing yoga. “I find myself stronger thanks to doing yoga. I don’t feel tired anymore. My health has gotten much better,” she said. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/vov5thatslife/support

This Sacred Life Podcast with Shann Vander Leek | Soulful Living | Feminine Sovereignty | Wisdom Teachings

When you read the words ‘walk in beauty’ what comes to mind for you? I’ve learned that walking in beauty is creating an intimate relationship with the goodness of all creation. I feel deep gratitude and respect for the Native American people who inspired my deeper curiosity about living in a beauty way. There are nine elements that contribute to the beauty way: awareness, prayer, stewardship for the Earth, creativity, sacred living, self-love, community, personal responsibility, and feminine sovereignty. In this fast-paced world, we can easily get lost in a sea of auto-pilot responsibilities and become blind to the crushing beauty all around us. We become out of balance with the natural rhythms of life when we try to push, control or go against the flow. Many women experience lives of quiet desperation because they believe they are trapped in the roles they play, and that these roles define their true feminine nature. They do not. I walk in beauty by standing in my authentic power and expressing my voice through my teachings, writing, mentoring, podcasting. My personal practice began after my daughter was born and was amplified during an intense Yoga teacher training experience. Practicing Yoga, Joy Spotting® and reading Shambhala Sun (cover to cover). Since then, I’ve been deepening my spiritual practice by circling up with wise women, exploring Shamanic teachings and practicing loving kindness. Today I will walk you through each of the nine sacred ways to walk in beauty. Each element comes with several questions for your consideration.Learn more about Shann and claim her free guided relaxation album for women who do too much at www.TransformationGoddess.com

Nancy shares her experience of finally quitting her addiction to nicotine and how using the breath, running, yoga and mindfulness helped her along the way. When she began her Yoga Teacher Training she was nervous and doubtful because of her age and lack of experience, but that didn’t stop her from gliding forward into further trainings and ultimately opening her own yoga business. I started practicing Hatha Yoga in 1983, and had been teaching since 1986 until about 2008. The number one reason I stopped was time limitation. In 1980s and early 90s I could practice one hour of Yoga and four hours of martial arts every day. But I don’t have this luxury at this time. Since the foundation of my practice has always been martial arts, I chose to take that Path.

Yoga For Freedom is the true story of 20 American yoga students and teachers who went to Nepal on a two-week trip to Nepal and came home forever changed. Author John P. Vourlis takes you on a magical journey that combines social reportage from a faraway land steeped in the mystique of the Himalayas, with a fascinating, poignant, and at times funny journey of self-reflection for this group of diverse travelers. The book contains many incredible color photographs and is based in large part on the journals kept by each member of the group. The serendipity of the excerpts from these journals at first catches you unaware, but then as you move along in the journey with the author, he makes you feel, in a special sort of way, as if you are a member of this band of adventurous travelers. These intrepid travelers not only visited some of the holiest spiritual sites of Buddhism and the country’s spectacular natural wonders, but also spent time at both a private and a government-run orphanage in Kathmandu, as well as an orphanage in western Nepal that was on the front lines of the child slavery problem.
