In this special episode of Pages n' Pages, we take a look back at our very first episode of the podcast titled "New Beginnings," which was a bit of a rough start for us. “I'm no longer accepting the things I cannot change...I'm changing the things I cannot accept.” - Angela Davis In a memo to her boss at Random House Publishing, where Toni Morrison worked as an Editor, she wrote of Angela Davis, “she is the fiercest woman I know. And I come from a long line of fierce women.” This memo was in defense of the young activist, whom Toni herself had contacted and persuaded to write an autobiography at 26. Toni's boss had complained that Angela did not show any “humanness,” and seemed too disciplined to be real. Toni wrote to him with a clap-back for the ages. “Angela is not here to meet your needs.” Angela is not here to perform your fantasy. “Your cry for more humanness,” she wrote, “is constant but I am suspicious of the word. It's the word white people use when they want to alter a “fearless” or “uppity nigger.” This memo sits in the archives of Columbia University's Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Toni's boss's response is not included, but the record reflects that Toni won the battle and remained editor of the book, and that Angela crafted the story she wanted for herself and the movement. This...our dear friends, is what it looks like to have your crews back. To take a risk for the people you love and believe in, and to be willing to go the distance for what you know is right. This is a Black girl love story involving two of the most influential Black women of any generation. It's a story full of lessons on how to make moves on behalf of those that matter to us.

In this episode I talk about Antifragility, a powerful concept introduced by Nassim, Nicholas Taleb in his bestselling book, Antifragile: Things that gain from disorder. Think the oppositive of fragile is resilient? Nope! Fragile is negative and resilient is neutral. The oppositive of a negative is a positive, so the opposite of fragile is antifragile. Antifragility is increasing in capability and thriving because of stressors, shock, and volatility. As Nietzsche (and Kanye) have said…that that don't kill me…can only make me stronger…” Antifragility is more than resiliency or robustness. The resilient maintains under stress or pressure…the antifragile gets better. Antifragility, resilience, and grit are pragmatic as they relate to combating gender inequity so we can transcend and thrive. Despite the host of inequities, biases and barriers that create an unlevel playing field for talented, highly qualified women, it is possible that WE can have the last word in the end if we adopt an antifragility mindset. We can become stronger, better, more proficient, not despite, but because of these inequities. And that is a mindset shift that can serve us. Do not miss this episode to hear more about how to harness your emotional intelligence superpowers from adaptability, to empathy, to excellent communication. We know that women must consistently be mindful of monitoring and adapting in response to biases. Although this is unfair and inequitable, there can be tremendous growth to our skillset if we have the right mindset. As Taleb states “the wind extinguishes a candle and energizes fire.” This episode is about harnessing the wind and being the fire that is energized. #antifragility #grit #resilience #robus #transcend #thrive Reference The 4Ps Advancement Model™ https://advancingwomenpodcast.com/4ps-advancement-model-problem-patterns-process-proficiency/ Website: www.advancingwomenpodcast.com Instagram @advancingwomenpodcast email drdesimone@advancingwomenpodcast.com Nassim Nicholas Taleb (2014) Antifragile: Things That Gain from Disorder. I was just saying last time how quiet things were in terms of Meghan and Harry lives and then out of the blue came the news that Random House will be publishing Harry's memoir, with the anticipated release date of the book in late 2022 - just in time for Christmas. It seem that Harry and the publishers did not intend to release news of the book just yet. The announcement appears to have been forced upon them after The New York Post got wind of the project. The book has already caused a stir, with some newspapers reporting that this is Harry's chance to tell his side of the story, and others already accusing Harry of preparing to drop more bombshells that will embarrass the UK Royal Family. For Harry's part he released a news story through his and Meghan's Archewell website under a heading "Prince Harry to Author Book Reflecting on Lessons Learned Throughout His Life." Alongside a description of his book is a statement from Harry in which he says “I'm writing this not as the prince I was born but as the man I have become. I've worn many hats over the years, both literally and figuratively, and my hope is that in telling my story—the highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learned—I can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common than we think. I'm deeply grateful for the opportunity to share what I've learned over the course of my life so far and excited for people to read a firsthand account of my life that's accurate and wholly truthful.”The press releases did not say that Harry has written the book himself. Some news outlets are reporting that Harry is getting some help from J R Moehringer, a Pulitzer-winning former journalist with the LA Times and now author. This has not been confirmed nor denied at this time.Harry is taking heat for seemingly wanting to have privacy in his life but then being willing to tell us lots of intimate details. One Royal commentator, already fearing that Harry will release more bombshells in his book, has labelled Harry a traitor to the monarchy and to his family. How intimate the book will be remains to be seen. What we do know is that between now and when the book is released the press will have a field day speculating about what will or won't be in the book. And once it is published, every little bit of it will be micro-analysed. It was good to hear proceeds from the book will be donated to charity. The press releases did not say that all of the proceeds will go to charity. However, even if only a fraction of the proceeds are donated, it is sure to net a tidy sum that non-profits and charities around the world so desperately need.Don't forget to subscribe to this podcast and you can read other stories and reach out to me though my blog at https://www.kindthoughtsformeghanmarkle.com/
