The apostles approach Jesus with a heartfelt plea: “Increase our faith!”—only to receive an enigmatic answer about uprooting a sycamore tree and planting it in the sea. In this episode, we'll unearth the astonishing symbolism of the sycamore, wrestle with the original Greek, and peel back centuries of rabbinic wisdom to grasp just how radical Jesus' words are. Along the way, we'll tackle the age-old question: Is God not answering my prayer because I lack faith? Linking our Gospel reading with the cry of Habakkuk and the hope of the Psalms, we'll dig deep to discover what true faith and servant-hearted discipleship really mean.Diving deep into our Gospel, we'll spend our episode looking closer at:The fascinating rabbinic tradition that forbade planting a sycamore tree within 37 feet of a cistern because of its enormous root system, and how Jesus upends this cultural fact in his teaching on faith [00:17:45]The striking comparison between mustard seed-sized faith moving mountains in Matthew's Gospel and, uniquely in Luke, uprooting a tree that can live 500 years, illuminating just how bold and impossible the acts of faith Jesus describes really are [00:19:05]The deeper meaning behind Jesus' answer that faith isn't about getting what we want, but about uniting our will to God's even after “a long day of plowing,” challenging any notion of faith as a spiritual insurance policy for answered prayers [00:40:17]The compelling Old Testament backdrop from the Book of Habakkuk, where the prophet demands to know why God seems to simply gaze at evil rather than act, and God's unexpected answer about faith and hope [00:46:53]How the Psalm selection for the Sunday connects Israel's exile longing with our spiritual waiting, urging us not to “harden your hearts” as the Israelites did at Meribah in the desert, and instead to nurture hope in God's future deliverance [00:56:37](Mass Readings for Oct 5, 2025)For the full show notes including citations and small group discussion questions, visit: kptz.io/27OT-C25
This sermon, The Power of the Hunger of Zacchaeus, reveals how his determination to see Jesus pushed past limitations, social norms, and personal flaws to bring transformation and salvation to his household. It emphasizes that true spiritual hunger attracts God’s attention, leads to lasting change, and impacts generations.
We recorded this week's marriage diary podcast on location under the famous Sycamore Tree in Bampton, the real village of Downton Abbey. But it was harder than we thought. Downton Abbey has become our family's anchor, so when we found ourselves in the UK close to the location where many of the show's outdoor scenes were filmed, we packed our microphones and set off to record a podcast. While we were talking about why this show has become a lifeline for both our marriage and our family, a coachload of tourists turned up. I've never felt so awkward and self-conscious in my life. But Brian refused to stop filming. So you will hear my awkwardness in all its glory... After a year of loss and leaving our home in New Zealand, Liz and Brian, husband and wife, have been living out of suitcases, feeling nomadic and uncertain. In this very raw episode, we talk about how binge-watching Downton Abbey has given our family a surprising sense of routine, safety, and connection as we travel the world and heal after loss. We also open up about the expat's identity crisis, what it's like to not know where "home" is, and pushing through the fear of being seen when you're grieving. This is one of our most authentic and vulnerable conversations yet, and we hope you enjoy it. Thank you for joining us, you are what make this happen. Our hearts Liz and Brian xx Kia Kaha. In this Bible Story, Jeremiah witnesses the downfall of Judah. King Nebuchadnezzar uses the Chaldean army to lay waste to all of Jerusalem. Hundreds of thousands of people are taken captive, and the remaining rulers of Judah are beheaded and trampled. Jeremiah, however, is spared from the Babylonians, and is given a choice to go to Babylon and live comfortably, or remain with his people. This story is inspired by 2 Chronicles 36:15-21 & 2 Kings 25:3-21 & Jeremiah 32, 33, 38, 39, 40:1-6, 52. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.Today's Bible verse is Jeremiah 38:20 from the King James Version.Episode 159: Jeremiah, still captive in the courthouse of Judah, was praying to God when he received a Word from Him that Hanamel would soon be coming to sell him his land in Anathoth. But this was about more than relieving his uncle of a burden, it was God's way of showing the people what He would do for them. So Jeremiah continued to preach the Word of God to the people and he continued to receive beatings from them. One day, he was summoned by King Zedekiah to give him the truth of the situation and though he spoke honestly to the King, he did not follow Jeremiah's advice. Yet even as the gates of the courthouse were being broken down, God protected Jeremiah and gave him mercy.Hear the Bible come to life as Pastor Jack Graham leads you through the official BibleinaYear.com podcast. In this Bible Story, we learn about the silent faith of Zaccheaus and the loud faith of Bartimaeus. Both men are held back by sin or misfortune. However everything changes for them when they come in contact with Jesus. Zaccheaus uses his riches to feed the poor and destitute. Bartimaeus is blind, but has his sight restored. They are both examples of Jesus' power to change lives. This story is inspired by Matthew 20:20-28; Luke 19:1-10 & Mark 10:46-52. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.Today's Bible verse is Mark 10:50 from the King James Version.Episode 205: The crowds were thick as Jesus was passing through Jericho, so thick that Zacchaeus, a short man, could not get a glimpse of the Rabbi. So, he climbed a sycamore tree to get a better view. When Jesus saw him, He told Zacchaeus that they were about to have dinner together. Zacchaeus, filled with joy at what Jesus did for him, made right the wrongs of his past. The next day sitting by the gates of Jericho, was a blind beggar named Bartimaeus. When he heard that Jesus was near, he began to scream for Jesus. The man could not be stopped. Whenever someone tried to quiet him down he screamed all the louder. And Jesus heard him.Hear the Bible come to life as Pastor Jack Graham leads you through the official BibleinaYear.com podcast. Rooted in the past and growing into the future, the church must always be reformed in order to live out the love of Christ in an ever-changing world. “God loves us all, both big and small,” a child's verse declares. The sins of the world are covered. We are able to stand tall before God our righteous judge because in the person of Jesus “salvation has come to this house”—to our house today. In Christ Jesus God seeks us out to save us.Scripture Readings: Jeremiah 31:31-34; Psalm 46; Luke 19:1-10

Fr. Joseph explains that in order for us to truly see Christ, we must climb the sycamore tree. Climbing the sycamore tree symbolizes climbing the cross, going above the world and taking the harder road with humility, just like Zacchaeus, who subjected himself to the mockery and humiliation of society as he climbed the sycamore tree. We must also take the same path of humility in order to see Christ clearly and directly. Tune in to hear more.Fr. Zacchaeus climbing up a Sycamore tree to see Jesus has a lot of meaningful interpretations when reflecting on the kind of faith we have. In that, sometimes it's best not to stay in a crowd and rather do something out of the ordinary to exhibit our faith in what Jesus can do and change in our lives.
