It was such an honour to speak with Kim Stanley Robinson for this final episode of Season One of Sowing the Seeds of Change. Stan is described by the New Yorker as “generally acknowledged as one of the greatest living science-fiction writers.” He has many fans, including at least two of my guests from this first season of Sowing the Seeds of Change, Rich Bartlett and Bill McKibben. His highly entertaining novels tend to revolve around ecological, cultural, economic and political themes, always handled with lightness, ease and elegance. He has a PhD from UC San Diego, and lives in Davis, California. Stan has published twenty-two novels and numerous short stories, and is about to publish his first memoir, but is probably best known for his Mars trilogy, which is how I first came to his work, when a friend, tech podcaster Leo Laporte, gave me an ipod fully loaded with audiobooks, including the Mars books. I became a confirmed fan, and was introduced to Stan by a mutual friend in 2012, although we have yet to meet in person – but we're working on it. In this conversation we talk about the art of writing, technology, oceans, mountains, Buddhism, mental health and the search for meaning, environmental economics, equality, leverage points and the fractal nature of change, and, of course, the future.

Richard Bartlett describes himself as “one of those people with a lot of websites”, and he's right. He's the co-founder of Loomio, a platform for small-scale digital democracy inspired by the 2011 Occupy Movement. He's also co-leader of The Hum, a training & consulting company that supports decentralised organisations to work without domination hierarchies. And he's also the co-director of the Enspiral Foundation, which is a professional network of friends supporting each other to do more meaningful work in the world. And he's the author of a community-building methodology called Microsolidarity. Rich is a fanatical Twitterer, and tells me he is a halfway decent blues guitarist. He grew up in a fundamentalist Christian community in New Zealand and now lives literally as far away as you possibly can, in Lucca, Italy, for reasons that become clearer in our conversation. I haven't met Rich in person yet, although I know him from some work he did earlier this year with SEEDS, the complementary currency. I was impressed with his very practical wisdom, so I was inspired by that interaction to take a course with The Hum, hosted by Rich and his partner, Nati, which was excellent. In this conversation we talk about complex systems, chaos and coherence, nouns and verbs, cultural innoculation, methodologies rather than mission statements, trust, partnership and domination, Riane Eisler and Kim Stanley Robinson, heaven and hell and Christianity, LSD, fear of death, polarisation and harmonisation. What I took away from this conversation was a greater understanding of, well, understanding. In our world it often feels like many people are talking, and not so many are listening. When we really listen, it becomes easier to focus on our similarities rather than our differences, and to tune into the shades of grey between the black and white extremes of polarised discourse. I love the work Rich is doing. It makes me feel hopeful. Just a reminder that our archive of conversations – with Charles Eisenstein, Tim Jackson, Jude Currivan, Bill McKibben, Sharon Blackie, Ted Rau, Paul Hawken, Peggy Liu, John Buck and Monika Megyesi, and Kimberly Carter Gamble are available for free on Spotify, and now also on Apple Podcasts!

From Loomio's website about Rich "I have a background in open source hardware (as Rich Decibels) and creative community organising (with Concerned Citizens Collective). I got swept up in the Occupy movement when it arrived in Wellington in 2011. I’ve always been pretty concerned about the so-called ‘wicked problems’ facing society: runaway climate change, resource depletion, ecosystem collapse, and the pervading sense of alienation throughout society… This Occupy experience totally transformed my view on all that – it was the first time I’ve ever really had any hope for the future. My participation in that movement lead me to believe that there’s no problem that can’t be solved by an engaged community of empathetic equals. Occupy totally changed my life, and my hope is that Loomio can make that transformative experience much more sustainable, and accessible to millions of other people."

This episode is a loose exploration of Rich's personal and political background, as inputs to the key themes of the Microsolidarity proposal. We discuss his early life in a fundamentalist Christian church in New Zealand, and how leaving this cultish environment actually proved an important lesson in how to move beyond limited or unproductive belief systems.  One of the key factors in Rich being able to get out of that church was an early bout of what he terms 'performative agnosticism' -- a deliberate engagement with ideas that may run contrary to one's own. Imagining a world in which God did not exist put Rich on a whole new track, one which determines his path to this day. What could we be gained by taking a similarly open mind towards others' ideas, whether to integrate or jettison them down the road? Could this be healthier than the left's puritanical, so-called 'cancel culture', obsessed with negating anything it dislikes or disagrees with? And what is it that makes some people able to audition 'dangerous' ideas in relative security? Finally, we look at the organization and methods behind Enspiral, the prototype for the microsolidarity proposal. Rich sees producing social change as extremely urgent, given existential threats to our world in the form of ecological disorder, social atomisation, and pervasive loneliness. Could Enspiral, with its 'cult-lite' approach to nurturing and sustaining social connections amongst disparate humans, be a template for a happier, more satisfying existence -- one that could form the basis for a counterculture capable of fighting existential risk?

When you think of the term BMX legend and you think of dirt jumping you don't have to wait long to hear the name Rich Bartlett. Rich is BMX to his core, and at age 51 he's enjoying the ride now more than ever. Rich started out racing and jumping BMX in the 1970s and quickly found his passion in life on two wheels. As quickly as his body grew, his name began to circulate within the industry and when BMX took off in the mid-80s, Rich was the perfect guy to become a test pilot for the magazines. He punished complete bikes and components alike with his 200 lb physique. He put everything the editors threw under him to the test and then some! Most sessions only took minutes before the subpar complete bikes would break or fall apart which left Rich to swap parts off his personal bike just to finish the test! Rich admittedly raced because he loved training so much but felt more at home at the trails, vert ramps, skateparks, and even some of the 2 Hip Meet The Street contests. Rich became very well known in the late 80s for being a really good well-rounded rider, but even more so for his humble and down to earth personality. We sat down with Rich and talked about creating the first ever King Of Dirt which also featured the first rhythm section, the support he received from his dad throughout the years, traveling to BMX nationals with money he won at the previous race, entering some of the early Meet The Street comps, starting a frame company called "Block Bikes", opening a bike shop in 2003, and a recent near-death injury that concluded with a positive outcome, not only physically but mentally, at a time he needed it most. So get comfortable, crank up your speakers, and get to know the Butcher, Rich Bartlett! Recently Rich wrote a series of Medium articles packed with brilliant thinking on how small groups can weave together emotional and economic micro solidarity. By creating spaces of belonging and financial security, we build our collective capacity to change the world. In this episode, I interview Rich and his partner Nati who has been instrumental in co-developing these ideas.
