Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Experimenting with microsolidarity crews, published by 4thWayWastrel on February 6, 2022 on LessWrong. In 2020 I was introduced to "microsolidarity", a set of ideas and methodologies on relating to others in groups. Over the last 6 months I've been experimenting with it in the form of "crewing". This post is a casual outline for anyone interested of the steps I took organising crews of rats and EAs to meet weekly and: help each other with life problems nerd out over mutual obsessions, from wellbeing to emergence to ambition just generally connect as human beings I didn't set out with a plan, I just did what felt right at the time so take this as less of a recipe and more of a retrospective from which you might want to pick and choose some stuff of your own to try! What I did: #1 Collect "free electrons": I'd keep an eye out for people I suspected might be interested in crewing and would be fun to hang out with. I found mine: In "introductions" slack channels for events (be on the lookout for key interests like "community", "governance", "wellbeing" or "relating") At virtual conferences for communities like effective altruism, complexity weekend, or radicalXchange People I know in real life (though never more than 1 per crew) People recommended by other free electrons #2 Connect: I'd reach out to these people to see if they'd be interested in a 1-1 chat Normally this would be a message like "Hey, if you were interested in jumping on a call sometime to connect I'd love to chat about X

Link to original articleWelcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio.

Richard Bartlett describes himself as “one of those people with a lot of websites”, and he's right. He's the co-founder of Loomio, a platform for small-scale digital democracy inspired by the 2011 Occupy Movement. He's also co-leader of The Hum, a training & consulting company that supports decentralised organisations to work without domination hierarchies. And he's also the co-director of the Enspiral Foundation, which is a professional network of friends supporting each other to do more meaningful work in the world. And he's the author of a community-building methodology called Microsolidarity. Rich is a fanatical Twitterer, and tells me he is a halfway decent blues guitarist. He grew up in a fundamentalist Christian community in New Zealand and now lives literally as far away as you possibly can, in Lucca, Italy, for reasons that become clearer in our conversation. I haven't met Rich in person yet, although I know him from some work he did earlier this year with SEEDS, the complementary currency. I was impressed with his very practical wisdom, so I was inspired by that interaction to take a course with The Hum, hosted by Rich and his partner, Nati, which was excellent. In this conversation we talk about complex systems, chaos and coherence, nouns and verbs, cultural innoculation, methodologies rather than mission statements, trust, partnership and domination, Riane Eisler and Kim Stanley Robinson, heaven and hell and Christianity, LSD, fear of death, polarisation and harmonisation. What I took away from this conversation was a greater understanding of, well, understanding. In our world it often feels like many people are talking, and not so many are listening. When we really listen, it becomes easier to focus on our similarities rather than our differences, and to tune into the shades of grey between the black and white extremes of polarised discourse. I love the work Rich is doing. It makes me feel hopeful. Just a reminder that our archive of conversations – with Charles Eisenstein, Tim Jackson, Jude Currivan, Bill McKibben, Sharon Blackie, Ted Rau, Paul Hawken, Peggy Liu, John Buck and Monika Megyesi, and Kimberly Carter Gamble are available for free on Spotify, and now also on Apple Podcasts!

Ethan Zuckerman is a voice that you need to know. He’s a pioneer for the use of media as a tool for social change, for cultivating international development with technology, and for the activation of new media technologies by activists. Ethan is uncommonly insightful about the currents and trends of our society. In this conversation he helps us understand the shape of our public discourse, and relates it to the world of today and tomorrow. This week I'm joined by Richard D. Bartlett for a deep dive into what it is that drives us both to cultivate community. We question whether our passion is coming from a wholly integrated place and explore how our trauma often compels us to act the way we do. We also break down the constellation of thinkers that have most inspired us and zero in on the difference between linking and ranking in social contexts. I enjoyed this conversation with every ounce of my being and hope it touches you the way it did me. I recommend you check out the courses that Rich and Nati offer through the Hum, I made some really great new friends after doing the Microsolidarity course last year. https://www.thehum.org/events http://richdecibels.com/ https://www.microsolidarity.cc/

In this episode of Talk of Today we're joined by Richard Bartlett. Richard is an expert in bringing people together and catalysing decentralised forms of organising. He's co founder of Enspiral (Enspiral.com) - a network of people supporting each other to grow up and to get paid for doing meaningful work. He's currently working on a project called Microsolidarity (microsolidarity.cc) that's focused on building and sharing a collection of methodologies for community building, answering the questions of How can we build small scale, high trust, mutually developmental groups. I'm a huge fan of Richards work and the joy he seems to exhibit in living and interacting with people. I first came across his work on twitter — I highly recommend following him. For show notes and links to Richard's work and other things discussed in our conversation, head to my website website (samhbarton.com) . I'm excited to share this conversation with you all. Our ability to tackle the grand global challenges we face ahead is dependent upon us, all of us, coming together in the places we call home, and taking action.
