In this episode, Dr. Dave Rabin sits down with Jamie Wheal, bestselling author of Stealing Fire, and celebrated author of Recapture the Rapture, to explore the evolving role of psychedelics in society, from their historical significance in the 1960s counterculture to their emerging therapeutic applications today. They deep dive into consciousness, psychedelics, the concept of ‘rapture', the neuroscience of courage, and insights from Eric Kandel on how evolutionary learning mechanisms shape all decision-making. Examining the contrast between ancient plant medicine traditions and modern high-potency psychedelics, they highlight the challenges of integration, the risks of dependency, and the importance of preparation and support in therapeutic settings. They also address the commodification of psychedelics, the necessity of a sacramental approach, and the deeper spiritual and communal significance of these substances. Ultimately, they emphasize self-discovery, the acceptance of uncertainty, and the requirement for unity and responsible engagement with psychedelics to foster healing and collective transformation. Entrepreneurs chase optimization, but what happens when that's not enough? Jamie Wheal joins Alex Raymond to talk about flow, resilience, and the deeper search for meaning in leadership. He challenges the idea that personal optimization is the ultimate goal, suggesting it's only the first step. The real work is in navigating uncertainty, making an impact, and staying grounded through Hedonic Engineering—a way to keep motivation high even when the path ahead isn't clear. Jamie shares how flow states unlock creativity and why great teams embrace dynamic subordination, letting the most capable person take the lead at any moment. He also reflects on the Bhagavad Gita's lessons on purpose, reminding entrepreneurs that leadership isn't about control, but about clarity, adaptability, and knowing when to step forward or step back. If the pressure to perform feels overwhelming, Alex and Jamie's discussion offers a unique view on leading with purpose and keeping your footing when everything shifts around you. Quotes “I think it's really important that we don't end up in the kind of late stage neoliberal fetishization of infinite individual perfect ability for a price. And we actually just realized, Hey, Shaolin temple style, train your body and mind, right? Push it to its limits so that you can hone it and direct it to those things of most meaning and significance and impact. Otherwise, we're all just trapped little monkeys in the machine.” (04:25 | Jamie Wheal) “Business leaders are in varying degrees and intensities themselves. It requires a very strong center for you to be able to enter the melee and not lose your own footing.” (07:51 | Jamie Wheal) “You don't want to get stuck in a model or a mode simply because you think it's groovier or more enlightened. And again, Silicon Valley leadership culture has kind of now permeated, has kind of become the default norms, which is, I'm a level five leader, a la Jim Collins. I'm a little Yoda behind the scenes. I want to make everyone feel empowered and heard, and our collective intelligence will win the day. Maybe, it depends.” (17:17 | Jamie Wheal) “Small is beautiful. It's a timeless text, but I'd super encourage folks to just give themselves permission to do a beautiful thing in the world at a high quality or standard that is satisfying to you and the people you serve. And just have that as one other option, at least, versus just chasing the series.” (55:39 | Jamie Wheal) Links Connect with Jamie Wheal: https://www.flowgenomeproject.com/ https://jamiewheal.substack.com/ https://www.recapturetherapture.com/ Connect with Alex Raymond: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/afraymond/ Website: https://amplifyam.com/ HiveCast.fm is a proud sponsor of The Conscious Entrepreneur Podcast. Today, I want to explore the profound journey of self-discovery and internal evolution, focusing on the importance of healing trauma, cultivating meaningful relationships, and finding purpose through community. I will challenge ideas such as Jamie Wheal's “meaning 3.0” from *Recapture the Rapture* and instead emphasize the real solutions: *ecstasis*, *catharsis*, and *communitas*—the keys to healing and connection.

Humans are highly conscious of social status. We are tribal primates who are wired to seek the "silverback" among us. This makes us prone to cult-like behavior. This is especially true today with the rise of social media influencers, like those on Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram. But the question is: can cults actually be an ethical and positive force for good? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About Jamie Wheal: Jamie Wheal is the author of the global best-seller and Pulitzer Prize-nominated Stealing Fire: How Silicon Valley, Navy SEALs and Maverick Scientists are Revolutionizing the Way We Live and Work and the founder of the Flow Genome Project, an international organization dedicated to the research and training of ultimate human performance. It's become a tradition for us now. In this episode of the Harvest Series podcast, we welcome Jamie Wheal, the author of "Recapture the Rapture," a renowned expert on peak performance, neuroscience, and flow states, and the Executive Director of the Flow Genome Project, to introduce the theme of our 8th season summit. The last theme was Radical Connection. You will soon find out why the biblical brothers Cain and Abel (present in many religions) are in this podcast's title. This episode runs longer than usual, but Jamie's insights were so profound and evolutionary that we couldn't bear to cut any part of the interview or split it into two parts. He provides so much information that I usually have to pause when listening to this episode to fully digest what he says!Join us as Jamie Wheal takes us on a journey through the story and future of our civilization, viewed through the lens of connection.Episode Breakdown:[2:01] - Jamie explains why the theme Radical Connection was chosen for this 8th season of the Harvest Summit in Kaplankaya. Why do we feel so disconnected today?[6:05] - Jamie cites the ancient social technologies we left behind. But how do we fight against the inevitable frictions emerging from the communities?[10:00] - Are demagogues and populists responsible for us feeling disconnected, along with social networks?[15:00] - Jamie talks about migration and humans being always on the move.[20:14] - We are going back to a multipolar world. What are the 3 main forces driving disconnection: 1. Tribalism 2. Colonialism 3. Capitalism.[28:00] - We are used to thinking that technology will solve our resource problems.[33:00] - How can we deal with these situations where if we want to raise the standard of living of Americans, we would need the resources of 3 to 4 planets Earth. Reduction is politically untenable.[35:00] - We are in a case of obligate adaptation: how to recalibrate our carbon consumption to standards of living that meet our needs. How do we become healthier and more connected?[43:00] - I'm trying to get hope from maybe the next generations. Jamie doesn't want to put all the effort into the kids.[45:00] - What about fixing people's consciousness? Yes, if it doesn't make us just self-indulgent.[54:42] - Jamie is writing a book: if an anthropologist from space came down to Earth and checked what was happening, interviewing the wisest ones, what is going on? What are the drivers of evolution?[57:49] - "Evolution (life on this Earth) is nothing more and less than an amoral and indifferent novelty engine. Its purpose is to create and generate options and possibilities. 90% crashes, 10% persist. That's how you get new and different." Out of these different things comes complexity. Some complex things are not beautiful, like cancer, but some things are good, true, and beautiful. Let's protect them. But it needs energy."[1:00:00] - The story of human civilization has been nothing more than a hunt for ever hotter fire to heat ever more interesting star stuff.[1:08:00] - What are the tools we have in our hands? We have seasons and contrasts, spinning, the moon... They are Earthshots giving us hope.Next episode will be with Nic Warner, a transformational coach, about how boys can become men. He will share his moving story with full transparency. You can follow us on Instagram at @HarvestSeries or @rose.claverie for updates.Watch our podcast episodes and speaker sessions on YouTube: Harvest Series.Credits:Sound editing by:

How can the new science of complex adaptive social ecological systems redefine our approach to climate change and sustainability? 2. In what ways do you believe interdisciplinary collaboration can enhance our ability to create effective solutions for the ecological crisis? 3. Why is it important to nurture empathic neural circuitry in humans? How can we incorporate this into our educational systems to foster better stewardship of our environment? 4. Jeremy Rifkin mentioned the integration of ecology into the US public school curriculum. What impact do you think this will have on future generations' relationship with the environment? 5. Can bioregional governance and the formation of citizens assemblies contribute to more resilient and adaptive ecosystem management? How might they be effectively implemented? 6. With the lack of political will Greg mentioned in the episode, what are some ways individuals and communities can still make significant progress in climate action and sustainable energy? 7. Discuss the concept of "leapfrogging" infrastructure in developing countries. What are the opportunities and challenges associated with this approach? 8. How does the historical evolution of empathy play a role in our current ecological crisis? What shift in consciousness is necessary to address global issues such as climate change? 9. The episode highlights a shift from efficiency to adaptivity and resilience. How can we reorient economies and societies to prioritize regenerativity over productivity? 10. Jeremy Rifkin advocates for storytelling through podcasts to convey ideas and inspire change. How effective do you think this medium is for engaging the younger generation in climate action and societal transformation? Timelaps : 00:00 Leading climate change advocate with extensive global impact. 03:52 Earth's power, human insignificance and historical roots. 06:09 Human progress has led to imminent extinction. 12:21 Efficiency vs. regenerativity in business and nature. 15:52 Humans are ecosystems, not just a metaphor. 18:03 Our genes make us part of ecosystems. 20:31 Global involvement in digital and green plans. 23:24 Agile businesses can be like ecosystems - Cuccinella's innovation. 26:17 Geological record shows human species adaptation to climate. 30:47 Nature is complex; adapt, anticipate, respond. Educational problem. 36:03 Prepare for climate events, formalize citizens' engagement. 37:28 Frustration with politicians not embracing common sense. 42:54 History shows empathy expanded and then contracted. 45:15 Survival as a species requires unity and empathy. 47:33 America, Europe, China lead with risk-taking mindset. 50:00 Fortunate to be here, create resilience. Navy SEALs: How to build a warrior mindset | Big Think The fact that U.S. Navy SEALs endure very rigorous training before entering the field is common knowledge, but just what happens at those facilities is less often discussed. In this video, former SEALs Brent Gleeson, David Goggins, and Eric Greitens (as well as authors Jesse Itzler and Jamie Wheal) talk about how the 18-month program is designed to build elite, disciplined operatives with immense mental toughness and resilience. Wheal dives into the cutting-edge technology and science that the navy uses to prepare these individuals. Itzler shares his experience meeting and briefly living with Goggins (who was also an Army Ranger) and the things he learned about pushing past perceived limits. Goggins dives into why you should leave your comfort zone, introduces the 40 percent rule, and explains why the biggest battle we all face is the one in our own minds. "Usually whatever's in front of you isn't as big as you make it out to be," says the SEAL turned motivational speaker. "We start to make these very small things enormous because we allow our minds to take control and go away from us. We have to regain control of our mind." In today's episode I chat with one of my favourite thinkers and writers: Jamie Wheal. I got to know Jamie through our mutual interest in, well, the hot mess that our civilization seems to be going through, and I knew he'd make a great guest for Win-Win because he's one of those rare folks who can combine both intellectual rigor and a deep love for physicality and nature. So as well as discussing game theory and the meaning crisis and all that good stuff, we also get into his discoveries studying human "flow states" - he's the co-founder of the Flow Genome Project, as well as the author of the bestselling books Stealing Fire and Recapture the Rapture. In this episode, Kyle interviews author of Recapture the Rapture: Rethinking God, Sex and Death In a World That's Lost Its Mind; speaker; and Founder of the Flow Genome Project, which researches and trains on improved human performance. This episode – the last of the many recorded at Psychedelic Science 2023 – may ruffle some feathers, as Wheal is very outspoken and opinionated, focusing on what he spoke about at the conference: the pitfalls of the psychedelic movement. While his outlook is negative, he speaks with humor, and these shadow aspects are issues we need to be talking about: how the nature of capitalism and returning profits to shareholders affects the concept of set and setting; how easy it is to prescribe ketamine and the puppy mill clinics popping up everywhere; how innovators are racing to the bottom to get ahead; the designer drug epidemic likely leading us to a Prozac Nation 2.0; digital narcissism, Instagram “Shamans,” and the dangers of cults; chemists trying to take the experience out of the drug; the overuse of psychedelics creating super egos; and much more. While he believes the hype and excitement of the psychedelic renaissance is leading us towards a trough of dissolution and that people aren't turning their amazing experiences into net positives anywhere near enough, he believes that fewer people using psychedelics less often and more intensely – with initiatory practices, intentions, integration, and honest self-reflection – will help us all climb out of our egos and move towards a healthier society. There is hope, but we need to honestly look at all the shadow aspects in order to move towards it. Click here to head to the show notes page.
Today, we have an inspiring interview with Jamie Wheal, a renowned researcher, speaker, and author who delves into human potential and peak performance. As the co-founder of the Flow Genome Project, Jamie is on a mission to equip individuals with the tools to reach optimal states of consciousness and unlock their highest performance capabilities. His extensive work extends to collaborating with prestigious organizations such as the US Navy, Google, and Red Bull to develop transformative programs. Jamie is the author of bestsellers like "Stealing Fire" and "Recapture the Rapture". During the 7th season of Harvest, he served as the co-curator, with the theme of "Radical Hope", and will explain what it means to him. Join us as we dive deep into his insights and wisdom.Harvest is an event produced by Athena Advisers and Capital Partners[3:43] Jamie embarks on a fascinating journey into Turkey's historical richness, emphasizing how it birthed and touched numerous ancient milestones. The Aegean coast, steeped in history, serves as the backdrop for Harvest, a revival of the ancient academies. People would converge at symposiums, sip wine, engage in philosophy, and indulge in spa-like experiences—resonances of the past awaiting excavation.[10:50] Harvest's international gathering echoes the captivating cross-pollination at the nexus of Europe and Asia throughout history.[14:44] Beyond activating minds, Harvest attendees seek to experience and feel through music and breathwork, embracing tradition.[16:12] Jamie highlights the theme "Radical Hope": a commitment to believe in an unseen future.[22:00] Maintaining optimism across decades is a vital social technology. Losing hope limits our adaptability; we must make room for grace.[28:39] Jamie explores the concept of being ancestors to future civilizations, drawing inspiration from the unique culture of Burning Man—an ancient yet futurist punk-rock blend.[31:00] Delving into Buddhism with his wife Julie, Jamie reflects on lessons from renowned scholars Bob Thurman and Thupten Jinpa. Change often involves non-violent and forceful approaches, leading to messy and tragic situations and moments of inspiration.[35:57] Jamie shares the "Harvest of the Day," a source of hope for him amid life's complexities.Next week, we will release Dr Julie Holland interview in Kaplankaya. Rebecca Rosen is an international spiritual medium. For the past two decades, she has served as an ambassador between the spirit world and our day-to-day lives. In this episode, we talk about real-life relationships, trauma, compassion, and the people around us, as well as everything “woo”: the superego, spirituality, stillness, and psychedelics.00:00:00 00:00:31 Rebecca's Reading of Candice 00:16:25 Asking For Guidance 00:18:20 Spiritual Experiences 00:20:36 Struggling With Stillness 00:28:23 Jamie Wheal's “The Superego” 00:32:45 The Role of Compassion 00:37:05 Outgrowing People and The Life Review 00:44:40 Intergenerational Trauma 00:48:58 Why Do We Forget? 00:50:48 Renegotiating Contracts 00:54:25 Ayahuasca, Psychedelics, Downloads, and Divinity 00:58:46 Dark Energy Magnets 01:05:54 Rebecca's Biggest Learnings 01:09:45 Where to Find RebeccaThe Role of CompassionSometimes, compassion can be mercy killing and doing the right thing even though it's not easy. Nowadays, compassion is being weaponized; too much enabling and coddling and not enough brutal honesty. For Rebecca, people have to take accountability for their life and not be a be a victim especially for people going through pain, low-T traumas, and difficult experiences. Life is messy and sometimes we have to do the hard things, and that's where our brilliance, growth, and evolution comes from. It's all about finding the courage to take accountability for our choices, showing up, and doing the work. It's not about “Why is this happening to me?” but should be more all about “Why is this happening to me and what is it trying to teach me?”. Being accountable also means taking our power back and doing the work, whatever that may be.Auditing RelationshipsLife is all about growing, and sometimes we outgrow a lot of people in our life especially those who don't put in the same amount of work that we do. People change and sometimes others don't, and we don't always have to shrink down to match them. We have to rise up and shine with the example of being the light and the example for those around us. Whether they fall out of our lives or not, the universe decides for us. It's a scary and uncomfortable thought, but the law of attraction rings true in this scenario. We will all find our people and the universe will bring those new relationships that match the frequency we're in. It might be uncomfortable to the ego; an ego death of releasing people and situations, but if your consciousness is in the abundance consciousness versus the scarcity consciousness, these are two completely different wavelengths and it's OK to just give it to God, send these people love, and let it be. We have to allow ourselves to grow and expand in order to fly and soar.Links and ResourcesOfficial WebsiteInstagramPodcastWhat's Your Heaven?: 7 Lessons to Heal the Past and Live Fully NowMeta-DescriptionPsychic medium Rebecca Rosen shares how we can deal with our day-to-day lives as well as the “woo”: spirituality, divinity, and even psychedelics.Support the show
In a World That's Lost Its Mind. In this episode, Kimberly and Jamie discuss his book “Recapture the Rapture: Rethinking God, Sex and Death In a World That's Lost Its Mind.” Jamie gives an anthropological perspective of human history across millennia to trace how we ended up today with economic, climate, technological, mental health, and other crises. He discusses how all of our social media and culture wars are missing the mark on the actual crises to our planet, and if we don't address it, it will destroy us all. His solution for processing this grief is by making intentional choices toward hope, and moving from hyper-individualism of our times to supportive, intergenerational communities. Bio Jamie Wheal is the author of “Recapture the Rapture: Rethinking God, Sex and Death In a World That's Lost Its Mind” and the global bestseller “Stealing Fire: How Silicon Valley, Navy SEALs, and Maverick Scientists Are Revolutionizing the Way We Live and Work” and the founder of the Flow Genome Project, an international organization dedicated to the research and training of human performance. You may have heard of the term “nones”- people listing no religious affiliation in surveys. Dr. Burton, theologian, author and journalist, is less interested in what this group of people are leaving behind (institutional religion) than in how they are finding or making their own meaning. But what happens when we seek stabilizing, emotionally satisfying stories that give us a cosmic location and identity without accountability to a higher purpose? Could it be that if we're seeking self-actualization and the only arbiter is our own thoughts, feelings, and desires that the result is lack of meaning and inadvertently the development of narcissistic traits? It's a powerful question and one Tara tackles with host Jamie Wheal in this episode.
The unconscious mind is still very much an enigma, but it influences our lives in ways we can only begin to imagine. Much of what we experience, our moods, what we like and dislike—most of who we are originates with the unconscious. But it's not always working in our favor. Today, psychiatrist Daniel Z. Lieberman, coauthor of The Molecule of More, and author of his latest book Spellbound leads us down a new path: one where we learn how to recognize the influences of the unconscious, making it an ally in helping us become the people we were meant to be.
Today we are joined by Jamie Wheal, who comprised a full one-third of the subjects covered on our prior "Sensemaking Cubed" episode also featuring Daniel Schmachtenberger and Jordan Hall. Jamie has kindly taken advantage of our standing offer of a right to reply to all podcast subjects and here is our conversation in its entirety. As well as being a sometime interlocutor with Daniel and Jordan, Jamie is an author of books such as Stealing Fire: How Silicon Valley, Navy SEALs and Maverick Scientists are Revolutionizing the Way We Live and Work and Recapture the Rapture: Rethinking God, Sex and Death In a World That's Lost Its Mind. He's the founder of the Flow Genome Project, an organisation that aspires to train ultimate human performance, and does leadership seminars and wilderness excursions with many famous organisations such as Deloitte, Red Bull, Google, Lululemon, Facebook, TD Ameritrade, Nike, and Goldman Sachs. So, the three of us get into it a bit about that sensemaking about sensemaking video, but pretty quickly move into the issue of making sense of things more broadly, as it's transpired with fraught issues such as COVID; both in the popular social media space, and within the 'blue church' of academia. From what we knew of Jamie, we expected to have a pleasant chat with him, and as you'll hear: it was a pleasant chat! Even if our worldview and understanding of things diverged a fair bit, there were a number of things we could agree on as well. A big thumbs-up to Jamie for taking our (relatively scathing) coverage of the infamous video with the best of grace and, in the best tradition of what the IDW purports to do, be willing to have a frank public chat with a couple of blokes who have been highly critical of some of the people and ideas he's (somewhat) aligned with. Our intros and outros are - as usual - quite indulgent, so be sure to take advantage of those bookmarks if you want to skip straight to the interview proper.Enjoy!LinksMike Duncan's Revolutions PodcastBeyond Synth Podcast (Chris is a guest on ep 342)Gizmodo fact-check on Elon's claims about AppleJamie Wheal @ Linkedin Feature on Jamie Wheal in the Texas Monthly

In our latest episode, Jamie Wheal and Dr. Wednesday Martin are intent on taking us out of our comfort zones, changing the way we think about women and sex forever. This week's conversation is with Jamie Wheal, founder of The Flow Genome Project and author of Recapture the Rapture: Rethinking God, Sex, and Death in a World That's Lost Its Mind.Jamie is one of the most brilliant thinkers I know – he has advised executives at some of the world's leading companies (Deloitte, Red Bull, Google, Lululemon, Facebook, TD Ameritrade, Nike, and Goldman Sachs), and his work & ideas have been covered in The New York Times, Financial Times, Wired, Entrepreneur, Harvard Business Review, Forbes, Inc., and TED. You may remember Jamie from his previous appearance on Finding Mastery back in 2017 where we discussed flow states and altered states of consciousness – that's episode #67 if you're looking to check it out. This time around, we discuss some of Jamie's most recent work where he takes radical research out of the extremes and applies it to the mainstream, exploring macro topics like where we are today, why it's so hard to make sense of the world, what might be coming next, and what to do about it.-----Please support our partners! We're able to keep growing and creating content for YOU because of their support. I say this all the time – but today's interview is one of my favorites of all time. Jamie Wheal is a talented conversationalist, killer writer, and the author of Recapture the Rapture, a supremely high-level how-to book, if you will, on how people might recapture the individual bliss and collaborative magic that we've strayed so far away from. We assess society at this stage of de-evolution before delving into ways Jamie has uncovered that we may deepen our understanding, and thus, our experience. Then, we spend some time talking about sex – past the stigmas and social strcutures put in place to distract and confuse us – to hone in on what a deeply spiritual and connective practice it can be, if you let it. We wrap with a thoughtful dissection of what makes a bad cult, and what makes a good one. Jamie delivers his insight without even a hint of pretentiousness; he's honest, hopeful, and confident – giving his words an inviting warmth that I know you'll enjoy. 00:07:34 — A Critical Juncture for Humans Recapture the Rapture by Jamie Wheal 17k-foot hike to a hot spring full of snakes Connection between “Rapture” and “rapture” The Woodstock/Burning Man of 1803 American spiritual soup Why we can't hear the centrists 00:34:23 — Ascension is Possible: Finding Meaning 3.0 William James and nitrous oxide (The Atlantic) Substances as a tool Your brain on nitrous oxide Intentionality is everything Ritualistic use in tribal Western New Guinea 00:59:01 — Sexual Practices to Deepen Your Experience Illuminating the lack of research on sexuality Unique nature of human sexuality Sex magic and hermetic traditions Creating a more exalted experience Truly making love 01:31:34 — Building Ethical Cults Luke's first (and second) cult Building communities that support each other Red flags for spotting and avoiding a culty cult Metaphysics, ethics, and sacraments Exploring the work of Lisa Feldman Barett The Follow → Fuck → Fear → Fight cycle 12 traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous Highlighting the influence of Alice Walker and Joanna Macy Celebrating the work of Ken Kesey, Robert Anton Wilson, and John C. Growing up in the Bible Belt of West Virginia, Kris Whitehead developed a mindset that he had to be a certain way. It wasn't until, at the age of 20, he read the book The Road Less Traveled by M. Scott Peck that he began to look at his spiritual growth in a new light. The book goes through the 4 levels of faith, agnosticism, atheism, institutionalism, and mysticism. Kris believes it's important for people to go through some sort of institutionalism for their faith, but if they stay in that place, they'll never have a deeper relationship with their higher power. Kris admits that he was stuck in his own head, worried about his looks and how people perceived him. He wanted to be free of that so badly and was led to a corporate job. But as he looked down the road, he saw his successors working 6-7 days a week with a plastic smile. Kris knew that wasn't for him, and so he opened up the Yellow Pages and started cold calling people, looking for lawns to mow. He figured he'd rather make $3/hour working for himself than $30/hour working for someone else. For anyone looking to get deeper in touch with themselves, Kris recommends the book Stealing Fire by Steven Kotler and Jamie Wheal. The book discusses ways to enter what is known as a flow state. While our conscious mind can translate 120 bits of information per minute, the unconscious mind can translate billions. Tapping into this unconscious flow state can help you do what you need to do faster and with more ease. Some of the methods for achieving this may be unconventional, but Kris says if you want to be elite, you have to be willing to ask the questions without preconceived notions. What You'll Learn: How to grow in your faith. How to achieve harmony in your life. What the key to happiness is. And much more!!
