Alex is a writer, executive coach, practitioner of somatic psychotherapy, and entrepreneur. He's the co-founder of Natura Care, a non-profit addiction program harnessing psychedelics. I'm also the founder of Sons of Now, a men's group for the metamodern man. I came across his work when I was invited to be a part of the men's group that he runs, and we did a call together to see if we vibed. We did, and although I haven't joined that group (yet) we both knew we wanted to spend some time jamming on what interested us. So, here's an episode, like many others, where two of us go into earnest dialogue following what we think is interesting. We get into the landscape of modern addiction; phones, apps, porn, food, drugs and sex. We highlight the impacts this has had on children, young women, our relationships and our focus. We share some vulnerable stories of our own struggles with addiction and what we have done to deal. Alex guides me in a bit of a therapeutic process around my own experience around phone addiction and ultimately we leave you with some encouragement and tools for how you might maximize your own sovereignty. Okay, so in this episode, Lubo and I delved deep into the heart of his newest film, Kingdom. We explored the symbolism and meaning behind the imagery of the black dust that clouds people's heads and hearts. We discussed the importance of taking responsibility for our own emotions, thoughts, and actions, and how this process of self-awareness and self-responsibility can lead to empowerment and liberation. We touched on the concept of courage and the courage it takes to face our inner critics and integrate all parts of ourselves. We also talked about the idea of sorcery in society, how shared narratives and institutions can act as spells that we either choose to believe in or not. Overall, the conversation was a journey into the depths of self-discovery and empowerment, with insights into the power of art to reflect and inspire transformation. Alexander Bard is a Swedish philosopher and rockstar. It's an awesome combination. He co-authored the book Netocracy: The New Power Elite and Life After Capitalism. We cover topics like radical exploration of our relationships and sexuality, male comraderie and hetero homoeroticism (straight men having sexual experiences together with women, aka 'Gangbang'), how to improve relationships by staying connected to your community of your own sex, why we need more all-male and all-female communities, and so much more. Zak is a writer, philosopher and futurist. He's the author of Education in a Time Between Worlds, a fantastic book on the reality that all of our existential risks are educational crises. In this episode we talk about how humanity is lacking a unifying story of value to guide us. Premodernity had religion and god, and modernity killed that story and replaced it with science and tech. Now we're struggling to not kill ourselves with all this power. Zak, with Marc Gafni and Ken Wilber, have founded the Center for World Philosophy and Religion, a thinktank aimed at asking the metaphysical questions that would empower future generations (and this one) to responsibly hold all this exponential power we've been handed without killing ourselves. It's a beautiful conversation and Zak is an inspiring thinker and speaker. This is the second episode of the Nuerohacker Collective x Ari in the Air Podcast collaboration series! Dr. John Vervaeke is a professor of Cognitive Science at the University of Toronto and has been the prophet of 'the meaning crisis'. Vervaeke lays out the meaning crisis as a pervasive feeling of alienation from the world and from each other. Suicide rates and loneliness, depression and anxiety run rampant. Video games and social media fan the flames of these problems. Vervaeke has studied these problems in depth, and proposes ecologies of practices as their remedies. In this talk, I get John's take on the connection between movement and cognition/perspective. We talk about grief and how our movement practices quite literally 'move' us through our grief. We talk about flow state and the effect that physical danger has on our ability to learn, adapt and perform. It is an amazing and insightful conversation, and it is the first in the series of collab podcasts with Neurohacker Collective, the makers of Qualia - a suite of cognitive and wellness enhancing supplements. Rob is a coach who deals profoundly with mindfulness and identity. His personal story is powerful and inspiring and today he shares with me what he has discovered for radically changing perspective, through awareness, and has called the Fundamental Shift. Jacob is the host of SenseSpace, a podcast on dialogue and sensemaking. In this episode, we go on a beautiful, metaphoric walk together into a number of really tasty topics. I was integrating a recent acid trip, so LSD gets brought up a number of times, and the nuggets of wisdom I had seem really delicious now, as I listen back to the recording. We talked for a while before recording, which I'm constantly regretting as I so often find beautiful things being shared before I hit that button. I'll try to make it a habit of recording my entire time with people, even when all of it doesn't end up here. Thanks for listening. Lubomir's film, In Shadow here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j800SVeiS5I Watch it before listening to get the most from this talk and to witness what is a real masterpiece of mythic, artistic storytelling. Lubo is a illustrator and animator, as well as a director of films. His In Shadow has been viewed nearly 5 million times on Youtube, and for good reason. It is a relentless cultural observation into the darkness of our world, but it is also an incredibly powerful and encouraging reminder for the unity, ascension and evolution that is both happening and possible in humanity. I recommend watching it a few times, it is powerful and poetic and I got more from it each time I watched. Dr. Annie is back - she's a psychologist and a women's mountain bike coach and today we discuss the differences in socal conditioning in men and women that lead to the different sensitivities surrounding fear, experiences with fear in sport, and ultimately how we learn things differently. We also talk about the utility of single gendered groups for coaching and community, and the transformational power of scary sports. A great episode, enjoy! Daniel is a Toronto-based philosopher and productivity coach. He's very thoughtful and he's been on this show 3 times now; each of which are very insightful, engaging and earnest. In this episode, we talk about his quote that "All your goals are just shitty proxies for tribal belonging." which I really like and resonate with. I share with him my idea for what community really is - real relationships of care, as opposed to merely a shared narative. We jam. I love this guy. Enjoy. Gregg is a psychologist of the highest degree. He's a deep thinker and has mapped out a profound understanding of existence. Today we talk about wisdom - what it is and how to get it, use it and share it. We talk about balance - how to balance our own desires and intuitions with the outside world and other people's expectations of us. This was a very helpful conversation for me, I hope it is for you too. Jordan is one of the most insightful cultural observers alive. He has uniquely described to us the 'Deep Code' of our culture, in an incredibly nuanced and articulate way. He has been one of the biggest intellectual influences in my life in the last 3 years and I've been looking forward to this conversation for that entire time. I'm so pleased to say that this conversation went, almost instantly, out of intellectual space, and into a space about embodiment - which is right where it belongs. THANKS JORDAN!!! I'm back from a paragliding competition and my mind has been running nonstop thinking about the analogies between the gaggle of paragliders working together to fly fast and the human cooperation on earth. In this episode I explain a lot of my thoughts around these analogies and how I think our perspective about our own success can radically alter how we contribute to rising the tides for all boats. We all have a shared thread of..... trauma. It is trauma that makes us take our first breath. It is trauma that shapes our psyches, our personalities, and ultimately, our relationships. We are amidst an epidemic of denial to this fact. We are constantly, collectively, repressing this fact that we have trauma, which cuts us off to this shared thread of humanity. We repress our emotions, downplay our suffering, and disconnect ourselves from what is innately human - trauma and suffering. This disconnection doesn't make the trauma go away, oh no. It merely pushes it into the shadow, into the darkness where it manifests anywhere it can. It will not let itself be unheard, and if we won't consciously acknowledge it, it will drive us through our subconscious. I hope this episode will help you understand that trauma and existence are one in the same. I hope it will help alleviate some of the shame that keeps you from holding your sweet wounds near and dear to you. I love you, thanks for listening. I have had a deeply introspective spring, and at a wedding or two, I've had seemingly strange pieces of advice arise in me. In this episode, I go through some of these pieces of wisdom and elaborate on them. Don't let your divorce ruin your wedding. Your wounds have made the best parts of you. Strange at first, profound to ruminate on. Lots of my own experience in here.
Marianne Van Dijk from Cup of Empathy joins me to discuss Nonviolent Communication, an approach to communication based on principles of nonviolence. It is not a technique to end disagreements, but rather a method designed to increase empathy and improve the quality of life of those who utilize the method and the people around them. It is a framework for communication that has changed my life and the quality of my relationships and I want to encourage you to look into it. We all need this, and our world is better with it in our lives.
