For long-time listeners of Future Fossils, not much will really change — philosophical investigations in the key of psychedelic futurism, voyages into the edges of what is and can be known, and boldly curious riffs on the immeasurable value of storytelling and imagination have always characterized this show. Many of the episodes I've shared in this last year especially were, effectively, preparations for this latest chapter and play as large a part in my ongoing journey to synthesize and translate everything I've learned from years of independent scholarship and institutional work in esteemed tech, science, and culture orgs…But we are no longer waiting for a weird future to arrive. We're living in it, and shaping it with every act and utterance. So in this “final” episode of Future Fossils before I we bring all of these investigations into the domain of practical applied inquiry, it felt right to ramp from FF to HOTL by sharing my talk and discussion for Stephen Reid's recent online course on Technological Metamodernism. This was a talk that left me feeling very full of hope for what's to come, in which I trace the constellations that connect some of my biggest inspirations, and outline the social transformations I see underway. This is a rapid and dynamic condensation of the big patterns I've noticed in the course of over 500 hours of recorded public dialogue and a lively primer on why I'm focusing on the attention and imagination as the two big forces that will continue to shape our lives in the worlds that come after modernity. It is also just the beginning.Thank you for being part of this adventure.✨ Support & Participate• Become a patron on Substack (my preference) or Patreon(15% off annual memberships until 12/21/24 with the code 15OFF12)• Make a tax-deductible donation to Humans On The Loop• Original paintings available as thank-you gifts for large donors• Hire me as an hourly consultant or advisor on retainer• Buy (most of) the books we discuss from Bookshop.org• Join the Future Fossils Facebook group• Join the Holistic Technology & Wise Innovation and Future Fossils Discord servers• Buy the show's music on Bandcamp — intro “Olympus Mons” from the Martian Arts EP and outro “Sonnet A” from the Double-Edged Sword EP• Read “An Oral History of The End of ‘Reality'”, my story mentioned in this episode.✨ ChaptersChapter 1: Reflections & Announcements (0:00:00)Chapter 2: Co-Evolution with AI and the Limits of Control (0:12:49)Chapter 3: Poetry as the Beginning and End of Scientific Knowledge (0:18:06)Chapter 4: The American Replacement of Nature and the Power of Narrative (0:24:05)Chapter 5: The End of “Reality” & The Beginning of Metamodern Nuance (28:58)Chapter 6: Q&A: Myths, Egregores, and Metamodern Technology vs. Wetiko & Moloch (0:34:52)Chapter 7: Q&A: Chaos Magic & Other Strategies for Navigating Complexity (45:59)Chapter 8: Q&A: Musings on Symbiogenesis & Selfhood (0:50:18)Chapter 9: Q&A: How Do We Legitimize These Approaches? On our latest edition of the podcast, we chat about the episodes of Corrie shown in the UK between the 7th and the 11th October 2024 (Episodes #11,381 - 11,386). After kicking off the show with some impressions of The Street of Lies, Corrie's brand new choose your own adventure book set in 1983, we delve into the week's episodes, and the minefield that is the return of Jesse Chadwick combined with the official start of Swarla relationship. We've all seen the romance between this pair coming a mile off, and although there's still a good deal of denial going on from both characters after the electric scenes on Monday, they now seem to be a lock-in for Corrie's next big couple... and we've got a lot to say about it! Same with Jesse's return, as the forgotten cowboy (no, he wasn't a clown) mosies back into Weatherfield with his heart set on Gail. Yes, we know a lot of viewers would have preferred Martin or, well, pretty much anyone other than who we got, but we're giving Corrie a bit of a break here, and actually, we've enjoyed what we've seen so far! Also this week, Hope's vape habit nearly leads to a blazing inferno at No. 9, Mason's brother Logan makes his debut, and Paul's family discover a letter containing his final wishes. Up next on the show, it's The Kabin, and unsurprisingly, the news that Corrie is moving permanently to 'online first' morning uploads dominates the discussion. We're both feeling pretty strongly about this shake-up to the scheduling, and we don't necessarily agree with each other either! If you're a fan of a good Conversation Street rant, hopefully you won't be disappointed with this one! And that's not the only Corrie news this week either! Stephen Reid's jacket going up for sale on ITV Reloved, a royal visit to the set, and some sad news about the death of a Corrie icon from the 70s... There's a lot to cover here! In fact, it's probably for the best that we didn't have a whole lot of feedback this week - although one email from a listener whose friend was an extra in a recent scene still manages to end up causing a bit of a segue into a discussion about Corrie's sustainability efforts.. Yep, all and all it's a long show this week - we hope you enjoy! Street Talk - 00:22:20 The Kabin - 02:39:18 Feedback - 03:34:01
Subscribe, Rate, & Review on YouTube • Spotify • Apple Podcasts✨ About This EpisodeHow can we design virtuous technologies while acknowledging the complexity and unintended consequences of technological innovation? How can we foster curiosity, playfulness, and wonder in a world increasingly dominated by anxiety and technological determinism? This week on Future Fossils (as a teaser for the kind of conversations I am having for my upcoming spin-off Humans On The Loop), I meet with Stockholm-based transdisciplinary technologist, facilitator, complexity researcher, founder of The Psychedelic Society, and once upon a time the youngest-ever board member of Greenpeace UK, Stephen Reid to discuss the importance of taking a more values-driven approach to technology development. Stephen and I agree that it's crucial to consider the potential consequences of technological advancements and to promote a more thoughtful approach to innovation…but for the sake of playing with tension, he places more of an emphasis on our capacity for axiological design whereas I feel more of a need to point out that the rapid evolution of technology can outpace our ability to predict its consequences, troubling efforts to design an enduringly sustainable future. One thing we agree on, and model in this episode, is the value of deeper conversations about the role of technology in society…and how to integrate their transformative potentials.PS — I'm guest lecturing for Stephen's upcoming four-week course on Technological Metamodernism soon, along with Alexander Beiner and Hanzi Freinacht and Ellie Hain and Rufus Pollock. We'll engage critically with ideas like Daniel Schmachtenberger's axiological design and Vitalik Buterin's d/acc. As usual I'm probably the odd duck in this lineup, going hard on epistemic humility and the injunction of digital media to effect a transformation of the modern self-authoring ego into networked, permeable, transjective sub-agencies arising spontaneously and fluidly from fundamentally noncomputable interactions of rapid information flows... Anyway, the point is we'd love to have you join us and sink your teeth into these discussions! I absolutely promise to bring up voting cyborg ecotopes. Big thanks to Stephen for inviting me to play!PPS — Here is another really good, very different conversation between me and Stephen and Alistair Langer on Alistair's show Catalyzing Radical Systems Change.(Editorial Correction: It was Mike Tyson, not Muhammad Ali, who said "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.")✨ Support This Work• Hire me as a consultant or advisor• Become a patron on Substack or Patreon• Help me find backers for Humans On The Loop• Buy the books we discuss from my Bookshop reading list• Buy original paintings and prints or commission new work• Join the conversation in the Holistic Technology & Wise Innovation and Future Fossils Discord servers• Buy the show's music on Bandcamp — intro “Olympus Mons” from the Martian Arts EP & outro “Sonnet A” from the Double-Edged Sword EP• Make one-off donations at @futurefossils on Venmo, $manfredmacx on CashApp, or @michaelgarfield on PayPal✨ Chapters(0:00:00-0:10:29) Stephen's Background and Interests in Technology and Metamodernism (0:10:29-0:18:03) Navigating the Complex Relationship Between Technology and Human Values (0:18:03-0:25:18) The Limits of Axiological Design and the Importance of Community Oversight (0:25:18-0:34:29) Defining and Defending Axiological Design (0:34:29-0:45:03) Exploring Alternative Governance Structures: Guilds and Rites of Passage (0:45:03-0:56:36) Vitalik Buterin's "Defensive Decentralized Accelerationism" (0:56:36-1:06:04) Integrating Humor and Recognizing Irony in the Technosphere(1:06:04-1:12:17) Recovering Awe, Curiosity, and Playfulness in a Tech-Saturated World (1:12:17- 1:12:56) Finding Lightness in the Face of Existential Questions (1:12:56-1:13:28) Exploring The Future and A Call to Action✨ MentionsIain McGilchrist, Daniel Schmachtenberger, Hanzi Freinacht, Josh Schrei, Ken Wilber, Vitalik Buterin, Bayo Akomolafe, Cory Doctorow, Nora Bateson, Dave Snowden, W. In the episode on "Technological Metamodernism," Vince Fakhoury Horn and Stephen Reid discuss the intersection of technology, metamodernism, and the potential middle paths that navigate between techno-optimism or e/acc and eco-dystopianism or doomerism. They explore how emerging technologies can be aligned with deeper values, such as sovereignty, relationality, and wholenss, while also addressing the challenges of our current technological trajectory.Episode Links:

In Season 5 Episode 3 of Solarpunk Presents, Christina chats with transdisciplinary technologist Stephen Reid about relationship solarpunk and lunarpunk have to crypto and web3. If lunarpunk is what solarpunk gets up to in the shadows of a moonlit night, that suggests that lunarpunk is inherently more interested in privacy, security, and anonymity, especially from the watchful eye of the state. That would further mean that where solarpunk is interested in renewable energy, sustainability, appropriate technology, and social justice, lunarpunk is interested in the tools, like cryptography, cryptocurrencies, and web3, that safeguard our privacy and anonymity and potentially protect us from tyranny. Do we need lunarpunk's fixation with using tech to protect our privacy to counterbalance solarpunk's sunny optimism that everything will all be fine to break through to a better world? On Wednesday, April 20th, 2022, 67-year-old Stephen Reid was supposed to play in his weekly tennis match in Concord, New Hampshire but never showed up. When he and his wife, 66-year-old Djeswende Reid, stopped answering calls and texts, their family became worried. No one had heard from the couple in two days. After a massive manhunt through the nearby hiking trails by their home, a gruesome discovery was soon made, but not before police ran into a suspicious man living in the woods. A man they would eventually deem the “Mountain Dew Man.” Written by Michael Dunphy Jr., Executive Produced by Michael Ojibway. For this episode of the podcast, we chat to Stephen Reid actor Todd Boyce, who tells us about what it was like to play the show's latest serial killer, from bashing Teddy over the head with a hole punch to drowning Rufus in the swimming pool - including how the original plans for the drowning scene were actually quite different! And in case you're wondering, yes - we make sure to get time for a bit of bin chat too!
On our latest podcast, we chat about the aftermath of last week's Super Soap Week, covering what went on in Weatherfield between the 16th to the 18th October (Episodes #11085 - 11090). With Stephen now zipped up in a body bag and the finger of blame pointing squarely at Peter, the question on everyone's lips is, 'Should he be punished for taking a murderer's life?' There's no denying that Stephen had dropped the bottle before Peter accelerated towards him, but that certainly doesn't mean it's a cut and dry case for Swain and co - and it's great how much it's got the fans talking too! Also this week, Daisy finally drops her drawers for Ryan - it seemed inevitable, but we're certainly not happy about it! Meanwhile, Ed resorts to desperate measures to get his hands on some cash, and Lee lurches off from Shuttleworth's after a slip of the tongue from George - alas, we hardly knew ye! In the Kabin, we chat to a Corrie viewer who was at the fan event with Todd Boyce last week, and share our thoughts on the excellent Barbara Knox At 90 programme that aired last Friday. After a bumper feedback section where we hear some listeners' thoughts on the demise of Stephen Reid, we finish off the show with a spoiler Kabin Extra section, where we give our thoughts on some recent cast news. Love him or hate him, Stephen Reid and his bumbling string of murders have certainly been the hottest topic on the lips of Corrie viewers for the past year or so, and now that his time on the show has finally come to an end, we take the opportunity to take a look back at his full story. From his early days as the suave businessman who caught Alma Baldwin's eye in the mid-90s to the killer Canuck of modern day Corrie, Stephen has certainly been on quite a journey - especially for a character who's been in fewer than 300 episodes in total! Were there any hints back in his early days that he could eventually turn to the dark side? Do we buy his excuse that he just wanted his mother's approval? What were our favourite Stephen moments from the past year - and what didn't work so well for us? We discuss all this and much, much more in our latest character profile!
In our latest podcast, we chat about what went down on the cobbles between the 9th and the 13th October (Episodes #11079 - 11084). Super Soap Week is here again, and this year they're dedicated to the demise of Corrie's killer Canuck, Stephen Reid. Going into the week, everyone had the same question on their lips: who was going to be Stephen's final victim? Though we must admit we were somewhat disappointed the answer turned out to be Rufus, we still had a blast watching this week's episodes, and the misdirection and twists that Corrie continued to throw at us over the course of the week certainly kept us on our toes! Will Tim be found before it's too late? Did Stephen have a fitting end? Will Peter become the latest of Ken's kids to get away with murder? For this week's bonus podcast, we've borrowed the format we use for our Patreon exclusive episodes each month and are counting down our individual Top 5 characters Stephen Reid should have killed off. Now obviously, at the time of recording, there's still scope for him to claim another victim, so we've decided not to include anyone on our list who we think actually has a realistic chance of getting bumped off this week, however small. (Plus we thought that if the likes of Elaine or Tim were on the longlist, the pair of us would probably end up making very similar choices!) With that in mind, we've decided to throw the doors right open and choose from ANY other character on the show we'd like to see the back of at the hands of Corrie's latest serial killer - and of course explain why! Not only that, but we've also plotted out the scenarios by which they'd meet their sticky end, so if you like a bit of fan fiction, this episode should be right up your street!
This time we got Stephen Reid - a teacher, technologist and coach who is involved in a variety of projects related to web3, metacrisis, metamodernism, psychedelics & personal development. He has taught numerous courses including Tools for the Regenerative Renaissance, DAOs, Web3, and AI. Currently he is studying for a certificate in machine learning and artificial intelligence from UC Berkeley. Steven starts by describing his background and interests. He first became interested in metamodernism and the metacrisis around 2016-2017 by listening to thinkers like Daniel Schmachtenberger and Jordan Hall. He sees himself as a bridge builder between different communities like web3 and psychedelics that have more in common philosophically than people realize. Peth & Stephen discuss the concepts of metamodernism and the metacrisis. The metacrisis examines the common drivers behind global crises like climate change, inequality, and more. It's about systems thinking and understanding how everything is interconnected. Metamodernism focuses more on inner development of individuals with the idea that if more people are self-actualized, it will be easier to address systemic issues. Stephen shares his insights and experiences, exploring the interconnectedness of global challenges and how understanding underlying generator functions can pave the way to solving multiple crises simultaneously. Some key ideas covered: - The multipolar trap - how even good people can be driven to bad things when coordination systems fail. For example, countries not wanting to be the first to decarbonize their economy out of fear they'll fall behind competitively. - The importance of both inner development and compassion as well as designing better external coordination mechanisms. You need both personal growth and systemic solutions.- Concepts from integral theory & the book Reinventing Organizations - which distribute ownership and decision-making rather than having rigid hierarchies. - Practices like authentic relating that help groups attune to collective intelligence and make decisions together. They discuss the challenges of governance in DAOs. Having tokens be fully transferrable often leads to plutocracy, but more experiments are happening with reputation-based voting and other models. The goal is distributing power but avoiding the issues of both "one person one vote" and pure token-based control. He emphasizes the need for people in the web3 space to focus on how their work really contributes to human thriving, especially with the urgency of interconnected crises. Overall it was a wide-ranging conversation about systemic issues and personal growth. Metacrisis thinking is joined-up thinking, holistic, and systems thinking. It's about understanding the interventions in any domain and how they can affect other domains. We should create a culture where everyone is aware of the possibility of downstream consequences and takes responsibility for understanding and mitigating them - Steven Reed Key Topics: - Systems thinking and the meta-crisis - Coordination problems like multipolar traps - Inner development, compassion, and practices - Distributed ownership models for organizations - Projects related to the meta-crisis Resources: - Metacrisis XYZ - Reforge the Ring - Futurecraft residencies - Metamoderna - Reinventing Organizations book --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/metagame/message
My guest on this episode is Susan Musgrave. Susan is the author of nineteen books of poetry, numerous works of fiction and non-fiction, and several books for children. In 2023, she was recognized with the George Woodcock Award for Outstanding Literary Achievement in British Columbia. Susan also teaches poetry in the University of British Columbia's Creative Writing school, where I was lucky enough to be her student – twice – while completing my MFA degree. Susan's most recent book of poetry, Exculpatory Lilies, was published in 2022 by McClelland & Stewart, and was shortlisted for the 2023 Griffin Poetry Prize. Susan and I talk about the literally sensational nature of her life story, about the loss of her husband Stephen Reid and her daughter Sophie, which inspired many of the poems in Exculpatory Lillies, and about her dislike of the easy and clichéd healing narrative that ends with her starting to write poetry again. Stephen Reid has our Patreon pick this week and has gone for the 2001 French action horror movie, Brotherhood of the Wolf. Directed by Christophe Gans and starring Samuel Le Bihan, Vincent Cassel, Émilie Dequenne, Monica Bellucci, Jérémie Renier, and Dave's man-crush - Mark Dacascos. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: In 1764 something was stalking the mountains of central France. A 'beast' that pounced on humans and animals with terrible ferocity. Indeed they beast became so notorious that the King of France dispatched envoys to find out what was happening and to kill the creature. By the end, the Beast of Gevaudan had killed over 100 people. To this day, no one is entirely sure what it was, a wolf? a hyena? or something supernatural? The Beast is a popular myth in France, albeit one rooted firmly in reality; somewhat surprisingly it is little known to the outside world, and perhaps incredibly it has never been made into a movie. Until now. Based on the true story of the Beast of the Gevaudan that terrorized France in the eighteenth century, the movie aims to tell first and explain afterwards. In the first part, a special envoy of the King of France, altogether biologist, explorer and philosopher, arrives in the Gevaudan region, in the mountainous central part of France. The Beast has been attacking women and children for months and nobody has been able to harm it or even take a good look at it. In the second part, our hero Chevalier de Fronsac will not only have to fight the Beast, but also ignorance, bigotry and conspiracy and will rely on two women, one an aristocrat, the other a prostitute, as well as the enigmatic Mani, an Iroquois he met in New-France (Canada). thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thevhsstrikesback/support

Druids are synonymous with Stonehenge and the Summer Solstice but are these modern druids representative of their ancient forbears? And who exactly were the druids? Many people base their knowledge of the druids on brief remarks made by Roman Emperor Julius Caesar. But, there are many other sources – from Ireland – that provide us with much more information on this ancient group. In this episode, I talk to author and Druid Priestess Ellen Evert Hopman, of the Tribe of the Oak Druid Grove. In her books A Legacy of Druids, and Being a Pagan she researched modern-day druids. We discuss contemporary Druidism as well as the ancient rituals and traditions of the group. Stephen is a passionate advocate of both play as a powerful learning mechanism, and technology as a tool for learning. Actively pioneering much of the work in games-based learning, he started one of the world's first game-based learning companies in 2005 and is now considered a leader in this global field. Stephen has spent almost 20 years researching, developing and refining curriculum content and pedagogical practices that transform learning through play, for students and teachers worldwide. In his capacity as both an education consultant and Microsoft Program Manager, he travels extensively, working in over 70 countries on 5 continents. He believes in the complete democratization and decolonization of education and that all learning should be a relevant, meaningful experience linked as closely to real world application as possible, and so he designs lessons that draw students and teachers into environments and experiences that take place on real farms, archaeological digs, and museums, to travelling classrooms in shipping containers, and entire curriculum rollout in Minecraft. Stephen has used Minecraft as a tool for teaching and social education for over ten years and has created some of the most well-known and impactful lessons available. Inside University Libraries, Baylor Digital Scholarship offers powerful technologies to enhance research in the digital humanities. What is the role for psychedelics in transforming our world for the better? “I don't think we are that far away from the point where it is more acceptable to consume psilocybin mushrooms than it is to eat meat.” ~ Stephen Reid In this episode Amisha sits down with Stephen Reid, founder of The Psychedelic Society. The society runs events and experiential retreats for a community of people interested in the psychedelic experience, as well as campaigning for the decriminalisation or declassification of certain substances to allow further research into their psychotherapeutic potential. Stephen speaks about his belief in cognitive liberty and the disastrous effects of state control - banning certain substances while encouraging others, the rising acceptance of psychedelic substances and what it is that makes a substance addictive. Stephen describes the profound mystical experiences that can be achieved through psychedelics, why the long-lasting beneficial effects of these substances are less likely to be felt without such an experience and how psychedelics can change our personality - and indeed our society - for the better. Stephen Reid is the Founder of the UK’s Psychedelic Society, an amazing organisation advocating for the conscious use of psychedelics in the UK. It is currently campaigning for the rescheduling of psilocybin (that’s magic mushrooms) to treat people with depression. Since I took my own excursion down to Peru a couple of years ago to take ayahuasca I’ve been fascinated about the healing properties of psychedelics. When I was down there I saw so much amazing healing and revelation that now I see the ceremonial and proper usage of psychedelics as such a vital thing for many people. I find its always really interesting to talk about psychedelics with people because it brings up so many different perspectives and opinions, especially when there is relatively little info out there. So I wanted to ask Stephen all about his perspective, what the real deal on psychedelics is, and whether its all a government conspiracy to keep us under control. See what you think!

Across England, selected GP surgeries are trialling 7-day working, but there are reports that take-up has been so low in some areas, particularly on Sundays, that pilots have been abandoned. Dr Margaret McCartney and Dr Mark Porter investigate where the pressure for extended opening hours is coming from. Mark visits Herefordshire where Taurus Healthcare, a federation of local GPs, is running a late night/weekend service. Managing Director Graeme Cleland describes the high take-up of the service after an initial slow start, and says new patients have been treated, showing previously latent demand in the system. Mike Dando is a wheelchair user with spina bifida and diabetes, and before the pilot started a year ago, he would have to wait in all day for a district nurse to dress his ulcerated legs. Now he just makes an appointment at a time convenient for him. But at the end of this year the seed money provided by the Prime Minister's Challenge Fund runs out, so what will happen to the Herefordshire pilot? Chair of the local Clinical Commissioning Group, Dr Andy Watts, says without extra funding, the pilot service is unlikely to continue and deputy chair of the BMA's GP Committee, Dr Richard Vautrey, calls for investment in current GP practices rather than expensive additional services. Doctors in the UK have been warned by public health officials to be on the lookout for people who become ill after travelling to South Korea. Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) has killed 27 people in the region and there are 174 confirmed cases of the disease. Nearly five hundred people have died worldwide after the virus first emerged three years ago, in Saudia Arabia. Jonathan Ball, Professor of Molecular Virology at the University of Nottingham, describes how coronaviruses like MERS (and SARS) jump to humans via an intermediary animal. In the case of MERS, that's via the Dromedary camel. Nitrous Oxide or laughing gas has a long history of recreational use but in recent years, there's been an exponential growth in use among teenagers and young people. Founder of the Psychedelic Society, Stephen Reid, describes the physical effects of laughing gas and tells Mark why he believes the gas shouldn't form part of the government's planned clampdown on legal highs. But Dr Paul Seddon, respiratory paediatrician from Queen Alexandra Children's Hospital in Brighton, warns that increased use could mean increased health problems, like the case of the teenager girl with a collapsed lung admitted to his hospital after inhaling the gas. Producer: Fiona Hill.
