The conversation delves into the critical aspects of blood storage and resupply in military settings. It highlights the importance of maintaining temperature logs for blood storage, the challenges of resupplying blood to forward troops, and innovative solutions such as using drones for blood delivery. The discussion emphasizes the need for proper management and logistics to ensure that blood products are available and safe for use in chaotic environments. Takeaways Temperature logs are essential for blood storage compliance. Blood must be resupplied regularly due to expiration. Innovative blood refrigerators can support forward troops. Drones could be a solution for blood resupply. Proper storage is crucial for drone delivery of blood. Managing blood types reduces mismatch risks in emergencies. Walking blood banks are vital for immediate needs. SOPs should include blood type verification. Logistics play a key role in military medical operations. In this episode of the PFC Podcast, Dennis and Andrew Fisher discuss the critical aspects of setting up a walking blood bank in military settings. They explore the importance of pre-identifying donors, logistical planning for blood collection, and the necessity of effective communication and coordination among units. The conversation emphasizes the execution and timing of blood collection during emergencies, highlighting that understanding the principles of medical procedures is more important than specific techniques. The episode serves as a comprehensive guide for military personnel involved in medical emergencies and blood transfusion protocols. Takeaways Setting up a walking blood bank is crucial for military operations. Pre-identifying donors can significantly reduce stress during emergencies. Logistical planning is essential to ensure adequate blood supply. Effective communication among units enhances coordination in blood donation. Timing is critical; aim to have blood ready within 30 minutes of need. Training all personnel in blood collection techniques is vital. Understanding principles allows for better improvisation in emergencies. Blood type identification should be done well in advance. Practice and familiarity with procedures improve response times. Vet and Clinical Supervisor, Lara Howe, at Pet Blood Bank joins us to chat about this life saving charity. Founded in 2007, Pet Blood Bank is a charity that offers a blood bank service for dogs who run very similarly to the human blood service. Owners bring their dogs along to donate blood at one of their many sessions across the UK. The blood is then processed and stored ready to be sent out to vets when they need it. Every donation a dog gives can help to save the lives of up to four other dogs. Before Pet Blood Bank, vets would have to find a donor themselves, often in the middle of the night and with a very sick patient waiting. Setting up Pet Blood Bank means that vets now have immediate access to blood when they need it. We chat about which dogs make great donors, their necessary age, weight, the procedure, the number of times they can give blood in a year.We chat about the different blood types and why there is a demand for the less common negative blood type which belongs to only 30% of dogs. Just as giving blood for humans this is positive experience, and one that's rewarded with treats, bandanas to become a fun experience. Pet Blood Bank operates nationally and is always looking for more donors! For nearly 40 years, the DoveLewis Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Hospital in Portland has operated a blood bank for cats and dogs in need of blood transfusions for life-threatening injuries and illnesses. According to blood bank coordinator Kelsey Reinauer, it’s the largest such facility in Oregon and possibly now the entire West Coast. Last year, DoveLewis performed nearly 500 transfusions in-house and shipped more than 200 units of blood products to hospitals as far away as Tennessee and Florida.  As with human blood donations, the need is often greater than the supply, and recruiting new donors can be challenging. The New York Times recently reported on DoveLewis’ efforts to grow a community of “superhero” donors. Their owners bring their cats and dogs to the hospital for regular blood donations which are incentivized with perks such as free treats and toys and personalized trading cards featuring their pets’ photos and interests. Reinauer joins us to talk about the blood donation program, along with Debi Hays, a volunteer at DoveLewis whose dog, Kasha, donates blood four times a year. Her other dog, Kiev, retired from the program earlier this year.

Show Notes Episode 422: The Vampire of Sacramento Part Two of Spooktacular 2023 “Gavin St James, Vampyre Hunter” This week Host Dave Bledsoe remembered that time when he got drunk in Sacramento and realized Sacramento was a really boring place to get drunk. (Even drunk, Sacramento is really boring) On the show this week we continue Spooktacular 2023 with one of the vilest serial killers in American crime history, Richard Chase, the Vampire of Sacramento. Along the way Dave takes you on an audio tour of the Big Tomato (That really IS what they call Sacramento) it only takes thirty seconds because there is so little to see. Then we dive right into why Sacramento has SO MANY serial killers. (See the part about how boring it is) After that it is straight into the backstory of Richard Trenton Chase, a regular kid growing up in regular life in the 1950s with regular 1950's kid hobbies, like torturing and killing small animals. (You want a trigger warning? On a show about a serial killer? You didn't infer that from the topic?) We will meet Richard's family, who were not loving, in fact they had a LOT to do with what Richard became. (Well that and Richard's peep being on the fritz) We learn how Richard mixed his own smoothies at home with all natural farm fresh ingredients. (Seriously, this is a sick dude and this is a SICK topic!) Then we discover how Richard moved from small furry creatures to hairless hominids in order to replenish his delusion blood problem. (We TRIED to keep the WORST of the detail out, but what we left in fucking horrifying!) Finally, we pin the blame on the real villain responsible for Richard's crimes and so many other California killers in the 70's and 80's (It is exactly who you think it is!)   Our Sponsor this week is the Blood Bank of Sacramento, who need you to know they are not a cafeteria and you are not a real vampire. We open with some people who knew Richard Chase and close with the Middle of Road singing the praises of Sacramento.  Show Theme: Hypnostate Prelude to Common Sense The Show on Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheHell_Podcast The Show on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatthehellpodcast/ The Show on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjxP5ywpZ-O7qu_MFkLXQUQ Our Website: www.whatthehellpodcast.com Give us your money on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/Whatthehellpodcast The Show Line: 347 687 9601 Closing Music:https://youtu.be/sW8574GA06A?si=nQpukSit-iccxMBL We are a proud member of the Seltzer Kings Podcast Network! http://seltzerkings.com/ Citations Needed: SERIAL KILLERS IN SACRAMENTO–WHY HERE? https://jamesletoile.com/2019/04/07/serial-killers-in-sacramento-why-here/ The Vampire of Sacramento – The True Story of Richard Chase https://truecrimeseven.com/the-vampire-of-sacramento-the-true-story-of-richard-chase/ Richard Trenton CHASE https://murderpedia.org/male.C/c/chase-richard.htm Learn more about your ad choices.
