In this powerful message, we're challenged to examine what it truly means to be a disciple of Christ. The central scripture, Mark 8:31-38, reveals Jesus' call to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Him. This isn't a call to casual Christianity, but to a life of deep commitment and transformation. Just as maple syrup requires a painstaking process to refine raw sap into something valuable, our spiritual journey demands dedication and perseverance. We're reminded that there are no shortcuts in discipleship - it's a lifelong process of cultivating spiritual discernment, contemplating self-denial, and committing to serious devotion. The message encourages us to set our minds on things above, protect our thoughts with truth, and continually renew our minds through God's Word. As we grapple with the cost of following Jesus, we're also assured that the benefits are 'out of this world.' This teaching challenges us to move beyond surface-level faith and embrace a life fully devoted to Christ, no matter the cost.

Cassie Hanagan, USGS Advancing our understanding of earthquake processes inevitably pushes the bounds of data resolution in the spatial and temporal domains. This talk will step through a series of examples leveraging two relatively niche geodetic datasets for understanding portions of the earthquake cycle: (1) temporally dense and sensitive borehole strainmeter (BSM) data, and (2) spatially dense sub-pixel image correlation displacement data. More specifically, I will detail gap-filling benefits of these two datasets for different earthquakes. BSMs respond to a frequency of deformation that bridges the capabilities of more common GNSS stations and seismometers. As such, they are typically installed to capture deformation signals such as slow slip or transient creep. In practice they are also useful for measuring dynamic and static coseismic strains. This portion of the talk will focus on enhanced network capabilities for detecting both coseismic and postseismic deformation with a relatively new BSM array in the extensional Apennines of Italy, with events spanning tens to thousands of kms away. Then, we will transition toward how these instruments can constrain spatiotemporally variable afterslip following the 2019 Mw7.1 Ridgecrest, California earthquake. High spatial resolution displacements from sub-pixel image correlation serve as gap-filling datasets in another way – providing higher spatial resolution (~0.5 m) maps of the displacement fields than any other method to date, and patching areas where other methods fail to capture the full deformation magnitude or extent, such as where InSAR decorrelates. This portion of the talk will focus on new results that define expected displacement detection thresholds from high-resolution satellite optical imagery and, alternatively, from repeat lidar data. Examples will include synthetic and real case studies of discrete and diffuse deformation from earthquakes and fault creep.

In this powerful message, we're invited to explore the nature of faith that is both tried and triumphant. The story of the Syrophoenician woman in Mark 7 serves as our guide, revealing profound truths about tenacious belief. We learn that faith is not a spiritual game, a magic formula, or a blind leap, but rather a confident trust in Jesus Christ. As we journey through life, our faith will be tested, much like this woman's was. But her persistence teaches us the importance of remaining steadfast, even when faced with apparent rejection. The message challenges us to cultivate a faith that refuses to give up, believing that anything Jesus offers is better than what the world can provide. As we navigate our own spiritual battles, we're reminded that Jesus has power over darkness and that our tenacious faith can lead to triumphant outcomes, whether in this life or the next. This lesson encourages us to persevere in our faith journey, knowing that God honors those who trust Him wholeheartedly.

The power of gratitude is emphasized, not just for its physical and emotional benefits, but for its spiritual impact on our relationship with God. As we count our blessings and praise God for His goodness, we're reminded of His steadfast love that endures forever. This message encourages us to see God not as a distant, angry figure, but as a good and loving Father who delights in His creation. The sermon dives into Mark 7, where Jesus confronts the Pharisees about their traditions and lip service to God. We're reminded that true faith isn't about outward appearances or rituals, but about a heart that's close to God.This message urges us to move beyond mere information about God to a life-changing transformation through Christ. It's a call to distinguish between human traditions and God's truth, encouraging us to base our faith on Scripture rather than cultural preferences or man-made doctrines. As we reflect on this, let's ask ourselves: Are we honoring God with our lips while our hearts are far from Him? As we face our own 'impossible' challenges, we're encouraged to bring what little we have to God, trusting Him to multiply it beyond our imagination. The story beautifully illustrates how God uses ordinary things - like five loaves and two fish - to accomplish extraordinary feats. It challenges us to examine our own faith: do we truly believe God can work miracles in our lives? This message urges us to pursue Jesus wholeheartedly, knowing that He has compassion on us and sees our deepest needs. In this powerful message, we're challenged to consider our true identity as citizens of God's kingdom. Drawing from 2 Peter 3, we're reminded that while we live in this world, our ultimate allegiance is to Christ. The sermon emphasizes the urgency of living with kingdom intensity, recognizing that Christ's return is imminent. We're called to be alert, active, and purposeful in our faith, not relaxing our spiritual vigilance even in times of perceived victory. The parallels drawn between animal instincts before natural disasters and our need for spiritual alertness are particularly striking. This message encourages us to reevaluate our priorities, focusing on eternal values rather than temporary worldly concerns. It's a call to action for us to pray more, serve more, love more, and worship more, hastening the day of Christ's return through our active participation in God's mission.

In this powerful message rooted in Joel chapter 1, we're called to 'Wake Up' and recognize the spiritual challenges of our times. The prophet Joel's warnings to ancient Israel resonate deeply with our modern struggles. Just as locusts devastated the land then, our joy and spiritual vitality can be devoured by worldly distractions today. We're urged to notice the times, share about them, and respond with renewed devotion. The call to fast, gather in assembly, and cry out to God isn't just ancient history—it's a blueprint for our spiritual revival. As we face our own 'locusts,' whether they're complacency, materialism, or spiritual dryness, we're reminded that God has purposed us for these times. By seeking Him first and discipling others, we can find hope and purpose amidst the chaos. This message challenges us to move beyond simply noticing the world's problems to actively engaging in spiritual disciplines and community, allowing God's truth to guide our minds and His presence to be our greatest joy.

It is  January 8, 1981, and we going to Lassen County, California, where we encounter 21-year-old Kevin Thorpe. After completing high school, Kevin enlisted in the Navy, serving for three years before returning to his hometown of Ridgecrest, California. Upon his return, he met a young woman named Laura Craig at a social gathering. Laura, a mother to a young child, captivated Kevin, who was undeterred by her circumstances; his affection for her was profound. Their relationship developed quickly and intensely—an embodiment of the adage, “When you know, you know.”Eager for a fresh start, Laura and Kevin packed their belongings into Kevin's white Ford Elite, towing a utility trailer, and left Ridgecrest for Oregon, where they hoped to be closer to Kevin's brother. They made the bittersweet decision to leave their baby, Treena, with Laura's mother until they settled in. As they took the scenic backroads north on Highway 395, a sudden jolt signaled trouble: the trailer had a flat tire. They decided to press on to Madeline, where they encountered a seemingly helpful man who offered assistance and invited Laura to warm up inside with his wife. Just as they began to fix the tire, three other men arrived, discussing plans to meet women in Oregon. Though Kevin wanted to continue their journey that night, little did they know, that the warmth of the cafe would soon be overshadowed by a chilling darkness, as their lives would be forever altered by the intentions of those they encountered.Join Cam and Jen on this episode of Our True Crime Podcast entitled ‘Real Life Boogeymen: The Murders of Kevin Thorpe and Laura Craig.'Listener Discretion by @OctoberpodVHSAll Music is by our Editor @theinkypawprintThis episode is proudly sponsored by Yaman. In this powerful exploration of the Parable of the Sower, we delve into the four types of soil representing different conditions of the human heart. We're challenged to examine our own hearts: Are we the hard path where the Word is easily snatched away? The rocky ground where faith withers under pressure? The thorny soil where worldly concerns choke our spiritual growth? Or are we the good soil, producing a bountiful harvest? This message reminds us that our response to God's truth isn't just about hearing, but about how deeply we allow it to take root in our lives. It's a call to cultivate a receptive heart, one that not only perceives God's Word but preserves and produces fruit from it. As we reflect on this, we're encouraged to consider the authenticity of our faith and the fruit it bears in our daily lives.

We learn that demons are real, active in our world, and often hide behind seemingly good or progressive ideas. However, we're reminded that Jesus has ultimate authority over these forces. As believers, we don't need to live in fear, but we must be aware and vigilant. The message encourages us to stand firm in our faith, resist the enemy through praise and scripture, and remember that Jesus in our lives is 'hell's worst nightmare.' This teaching is particularly relevant in today's world, where we're called to discern the spiritual roots behind cultural and societal issues.

And then there was this -- emergency crews last night responding to a hazmat investigation on Old River Road near Highway 166.     Employees at the Cuties Plant there reported smelling amonia shortly after the quake struck.     The plant was evacuated out of an abundance of caution as crews swept the plant.     Officials with Kern County Fire later confirmed there was no leak, and allowed the employees to return. last night's 5.2 earthquake seen in real-time on a seismograph.    It was captured by aerospace specialist Jared Head at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles.     Seismographs are installed in the ground throughout the world and operate as part of a network to capture ground motion. There were several food and gas station workers who were still awake and working close to the epicenter when the quake hit.     As 17's Connor Dore reports, the initial feeling was that of shock, fear, and confusion.    Here's seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones talking about where last night's quake hit.  One way to prepare for future earthquakes is by downloading the My Shake alert app.         It's free to download on your smart phone and can give you a few seconds heads up before the shaking begins.         Experts say even a few moments to prepare could be the difference between life and death. Here are some tips to help keep you safe in the event of another earthquake or aftershock.    If you're indoors, stand in a doorway or get under a sturdy table or desk and cover your head.    Stay away from windows and any heavy furniture that is not fastened to a wall.    If you're driving, get to an open area, away from trees and power lines, and *stay inside your vehicle. These temblors come just days after the 5-year anniversary of the Ridgecrest earthquakes.    In 2019, Ridgecrest and the town of Trona were rocked by several intense earthquakes, including a magnitude 6.4 on the Fourth of July... and then the mainshock -- a 7.1 magnitude -- on the Fifth.    The shaking caused significant damage to several buildings in the region.    It was felt as far away as Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Sacramento.    They were also the strongest quakes to strike California in the past 20 years.    Remarkably, no one died in Ridgecrest, but one death was reported in Nevada.Last night's earthquake also comes just weeks after the 72nd anniversary of another major earthquake that shook Kern County.    The Summer of 1952 was defined by a series of seismic shocks that terrified the Golden Empire.    The main shock of those temblors -- a 7.3 -- striking just before five o'clock the morning of July 21st...with aftershocks shaking the county for 33 days.    14 people died in those quakes...including two in Bakersfield on August 22nd.    Geologists telling us that massive series of devastating earthquakes happened not far from the epicenter of the one that struck last night.

Bro. Ray is back from his July sabbatical and concludes his series "On Purpose."In this message, we're reminded of God's purpose for our lives and the importance of living it out faithfully. The central theme revolves around 2 Corinthians 13, where Paul admonishes the Corinthians to examine themselves and get their spiritual act together. We're challenged to consider why God may intervene in our lives, preserving us for His greater purpose. The message draws parallels between the Corinthians' struggles and our modern cultural challenges, urging us to value our souls above all else. We're encouraged to guard against habitual sin, false accusations, and denial of truth - all of which can derail our spiritual journey. Through personal examination, prayerful expectations, and purposeful exhortation, we can align ourselves with God's will and hear those coveted words: 'Well done, good and faithful servant.'

The episode features JB Benna, a filmmaker and adventurer who's work creating the film Unbreakable has notably influenced the sport. Troy shares his personal connection to Unbreakable, crediting it alongside the book Born to Run for fostering his love for ultra running. JB Benna discusses his background, combining a passion for art, entrepreneurship, and adventure, highlighting his early interest in filmmaking inspired by family trips and outdoor activities in the Reno-Lake Tahoe area. JB pursued film studies at USC, where he honed his technical skills and story structure knowledge. His early career included roles at Spyglass Entertainment and Warner Brothers, providing valuable experience in script development and video editing. A transformative hiking expedition on the Pacific Crest Trail introduced him to ultra running, leading to his first ultra marathon, the Ridgecrest 50k. This dual passion for adventure sports and filmmaking culminated in the creation of Journey Film. His first major project, "The Runner," documented David Horton's speed record attempt on the Pacific Crest Trail and found success within the ultra running community, supported by sponsors like Montrail. Subsequent projects, including filming Dean Karnass's "50 marathons in 50 states in 50 consecutive days" for The North Face, further established JB's reputation for authentically capturing the spirit of ultra running. We then dive into Unbreakable, how it came to life, the pitfalls and challenges of creating the film and the impact that it has had on the sport.  JB shared some rather amazing insights into how the film was made in a time where Go Pos with built in gimbals and 4k video on Iphones was non-existent.  We round out the convo talking about the decision and the impact of putting Unbreakable up on Youtube free of charge for the newest generation of trial and ultrarunner to experience.  JB's Links IG - @jbbenna       @journeyfilmWebsite - Journey Film Things we talked about in this episode Unbreakable on Youtube USC Film School PCT Jeff Cozack Journeyfilm Unbreakable Digital Box Set - OVER 10 HOURS OF BONUS MATERIAL The Runner - David Horton - PCT Speed Record  Krissy Moel Ultra Marathon Man - Book 50 Marathons in 50 States in 50 Days - Film Spirit of the Marathon Release - Screen Vision Hal Koerner Carly Koerner Kilian Jornet Anton Krupicka Tahoe Rim Trail 100 Western States Topher Gaylord If you are enjoying the content, please consider supporting our sponsors using the links below. Stress Shadows: Insights into the Physics of Aftershock Triggering

Earthquake Science Center Seminars

Play Episode Listen Later May 22, 2024 60:00

Jeanne Hardebeck, U.S. Geological Survey Aftershock triggering is commonly attributed to static Coulomb stress changes from the mainshock. A Coulomb stress increase encourages aftershocks in some areas, while in other areas termed “stress shadows” a decrease in Coulomb stress suppresses earthquake occurrence. While the predicted earthquake rate decrease is rarely seen, lower aftershock rates are observed in the stress shadows compared to stress increase regions. However, the question remains why some aftershocks occur in the stress shadows. I examine three hypotheses: (1) Aftershocks appear in shadows because of inaccuracy in the computed stress change. (2) Aftershocks in the shadows occur on faults with different orientations than the model receiver faults, and these unexpected fault orientations experience increased Coulomb stress. (3) Aftershocks in the shadows are triggered by other physical processes, specifically dynamic stress changes. For the 2016 Kumamoto, Japan, and 2019 Ridgecrest, California, sequences, the first two hypotheses seem unlikely. Over many realizations of the stress calculations with different modeling inputs, numerous aftershocks consistently show negative static Coulomb stress changes both on the model receiver faults and the individual event focal mechanisms. Hypothesis 3 appears more likely, as the spatial and temporal distribution of aftershocks in the stress shadows are consistent with the expectations of dynamic triggering: the aftershocks occur mainly in a burst over the first few days to weeks, and decay with distance like near-field body waves. The time series of dynamic stress can be modeled, and numerous metrics explored, such as the maximum dynamic Coulomb stress change, and the period and duration of the stressing. Determining which metrics correspond to aftershock occurrence in the stress shadows may be useful in discriminating between various proposed physical mechanisms of dynamic stress triggering.

Fault damage zone evolution across distributed fault systems: Insights from Ridgecrest, California

Zachary Smith, University of California Berkley Intense dynamic stresses during earthquakes can activate numerous subsidiary faults and generate off-fault damage that alters fault properties and can impact the source processes and rupture dynamics of future earthquakes. Distinguishing how much damage accumulates during a single earthquake versus multiple earthquake cycles and determining how the magnitude of earthquakes impacts off-fault damage remains challenging. We combine geodetic, field, and experimental observations to evaluate the relationship between slip and off-fault deformation during a single earthquake and to assess how deformation evolves through successive earthquake cycles. Our study is focused on distributed faults that ruptured during the 2019 Mw 6.4 and 7.1 Ridgecrest earthquake sequence. Coseismic surface offsets are well imaged by satellite observing systems and the faults cut dikes of the extensive Independence dike swarm which serve as excellent linear cumulative displacement markers and records of near-fault damage exposed at Earth’s surface. Geodetic observations allow us to constrain slip and off-fault deformation due to a single event and the dikes enable us to constrain cumulative displacements. We bridge the gap between space geodetic observations of deformation and laboratory scale deformation by collecting sub-millimeter resolution ground-based imagery and LiDAR across offset dikes and along bedrock sections of the major faults. Using these high-resolution scans, we compare fault slip with mesoscale fault-damage properties (e.g., fracture density and fragment size). Optical grain size analysis shows that fault damage is lithology dependent and that asymmetric grain size reduction of bedrock across faults is common. Fault zone asymmetry may result from slip on geometrically complex faults, preferred rupture directivity on subsidiary faults, or by distributed off-fault shearing, as observed in geodetic studies. We performed successive dynamic loading rock mechanics experiments to investigate how deformation may evolve over multiple earthquake cycles leading to the development of damage zone asymmetry and pulverized zones. Integration of geodetic, field, and laboratory observations provides a multiscale view of off-fault deformation to better inform the interpretation of inelastic strain accumulation in geodetic data, damage accumulation along large strike-slip faults, and seismic hazards associated with distributed shallow faulting.

Some of today's top storiesWe're learning more this morning about some tense moments at last night's Bakersfield City Council meeting.  A pro-Palestinian protester was arrested... after allegedly making threatening comments to city councilmembers. Riddhi Patel.has been attending City Council meetings to ask that city leaders pass a ceasefire resolution for the Israel-Hamas War.  Soon after those comments... Patel was escorted out of the chambers then arrested by Bakersfield police officers. Other pro-Palestinian protesters later approached 17 News to emphasize Patel does not represent them. Protesters also spoke against the city's recent security improvement measures.  During the meeting... the City Council voted unanimously... 7-0... to pass a policy on security at public city buildings... meetings... and events.  It includes physical security protocols... similar to an airport baggage check and metal detectors.  But many are questioning the timing of the new security.  City Attorney Ginny Gennaro denies the enhancements have to do with the recent protests... but protesters say they're dubious. Meantime, four protesters arrested during a confrontation with police at last month's Bakersfield City Council meeting have now been criminally charged. You may remember this scene on March 27, when pro-Palestinian protesters clashed with police at the front doors of city hall after being removed from chambers.     It resulted in a broken glass door and an officer injured.    Gabriela Lynn Mota and Lorena Salinas are both charged with felony resisting arrest, and Salinas also faces a felony count of vandalism, court records show.    Lance Mack and Ashley Vega are charged with misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest and remaining at the scene of a riot.29 people are under arrest following a series of compliance checks in Ridgecrest. Ridgecrest police say it happened last week when 44 of those searches were conducted.    Items seized included over 7 pounds of methamphetamine, over 2 pounds of suspected cocaine, over 20 grams of suspected Fentanyl, over $70,000 dollars and several meth pipes.     Officers also say 8 guns and over 800 hundred rounds of ammunition were seized from a subject, and one stolen car was recovered.
