Send us a textIn Joshua 5, the people of Israel finally step into the land God promised, but before the battles begin, God calls them to stop, remember, and draw near. Circumcision is renewed, the Passover is celebrated, manna ceases, and Joshua comes face to face with the Commander of the Lord's army. Victory doesn't start with strategy or strength—it starts with holiness, obedience, and reverence. In this episode of The Pursuit of Manliness Podcast, we wrestle with a hard truth: many men live close to God, but not close enough. We're nearby, familiar with the language and the routines, yet distant in obedience, humility, and surrender. This conversation challenges men to examine where they may be settling for spiritual proximity instead of true nearness. What does it look like to consecrate ourselves, remove the sandals, and recognize whose battle we're really fighting?Joshua 5 reminds us that before God works through a man, He often works on a man.Learn more about The Pursuit of Manliness: https://www.thepursuitofmanliness.com/ Join The Herd:  https://www.thepursuitofmanliness.com/join-the-herd Build your own local Tribe with Tribe Builder: https://www.thepursuitofmanliness.com/gear/p/tribe-builderRegister for our 2026 Fall Men's Retreat: https://www.thepursuitofmanliness.com/gear/p/2026-mens-retreatSupport the show

Using the account of Paul and Barnabas in Acts 14, he illustrates how the crowds shifted from worshiping the apostles to stoning them once the gospel challenged their cultural idols and demanded true repentance. Noel challenges listeners to consider whether they truly want the real Jesus or simply a version of Him that agrees with their politics, sexuality, and finances. Subscribe to AfterWords on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts.Download a copy of the Exodus JournalVisit us online: rivchurch.comFollow us on InstagramSend us feedback: podcast@rivchurch.comSubscribe to AfterWords on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts.Visit us online: rivchurch.comFollow us on InstagramSend us feedback: podcast@rivchurch.com

Sometimes we keep our distance from someone in need—not because we don't care, but because we don't know what to do. Besides, we're really busy, and "we can't fix all their problems" anyway. But the reality is that God doesn't ask us to fix people's problems. He asks us to care. And we find that compassion grows when we get close. In this message, we'll explore what Jesus modeled through His life: serving others sacrificially. For us, that can mean stepping out of our comfort zones and moving toward people in need--not with solutions, but with our presence, empathy, and love. Support the show

Pastor John explores Galatians 6:1–10, urging believers to embrace the call to bear one another's burdens as an expression of Christlike love. Drawing from the imagery of deep friendship and shared struggle, he emphasizes the importance of spiritual closeness—not just proximity, but meaningful connection that enables restoration, empathy, and practical support. Pastor John challenges the church to move beyond judgment and isolation, cultivating relationships marked by humility, grace, and the willingness to walk alongside others through their faults, trials, and burdens. The sermon is a heartfelt reminder that we cannot help from a distance—true spiritual aid requires closeness, compassion, and Christ-centered meekness.Eastland is a Place to BelongEastland Baptist Church is located in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Workers were compensated $55 an hour for this task. The AI Paperclip Apocalypse: Could Superintelligence Maximize Us Out of Existence? The 'paperclip maximizer' is a thought experiment where an AI, tasked with producing paperclips, might consume all resources, including humans, to fulfill its goal. Max and Matt dive into the messy, hilarious, and sometimes frustrating world of bedtime battles. From the never-ending requests for “just one more story” to the mysterious ways kids find infinite energy when it's time to sleep, they break down the emotional toll (and occasional victories) of getting their little ones down for the night. They share their own bedtime struggles, the tactics that sometimes work (and mostly don't), and how sleep—or lack thereof—impacts the whole family dynamic. The guys get real about the tension between partners when one person is always “the bedtime enforcer,” the guilt of losing patience, and the little moments of magic hidden in the chaos. And of course, they tackle the age-old question: is bedtime really about the kids, or is it a battle of wills between exhausted parents and tiny, relentless negotiators? In this episode of the Journey of My Mother's Son podcast, I talk with Joe Engler. Joe played for our organization back in 2003.  He was on our Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League (ACBL) team between his sophomore and junior seasons at Minot State University in North Dakota.  I refer to him as one of my old players, but he never actually played a game for me, he just played in our organization.  He was one of the players who I really connected with while he was with us. Joe and I talk about the life lessons that the game of baseball taught him and how he is using them today in both his work and personal life.  Joe is now an Associate Professor and Director of School Psychology at Gonzaga University. Dr. Engler received his BA in psychology at Minot State University in Minot, ND and his Ph.D. in school psychology at The University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD. Dr. Engler began his professional career as a school psychologist in Tooele, UT and remains active in the profession through advocacy and leadership at the local, state, and national level. Dr. Engler holds the Nationally Certified School Psychologist credential through the National Association of School Psychologists and is a diplomate in school neuropsychology through the American Board of School Neuropsychology. His research interests include preschool assessment, critical evaluation of psychometric tests, and parental involvement. Joe recently co-authored his second book titled, “Essentials of Addressing Infants, Toddlers, and Pre-schoolers.”  It will be released in early April of 2025. We wrap the conversation up by talking about Joe's recent love for playing music.  He, his wife, and a group of friends recently started the cover band, Close Enough, in which Joe plays lead guitar. Joe was also inducted into the Minot State University Hall of Fame in September of 2024. If you're ever in the Spokane area and want to see the band play somewhere, check them out on social media on either Instagram or Facebook.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Reformative Hypocrisy, and Paying Close Enough Attention to Selectively Reward It., published by Andrew Critch on September 11, 2024 on LessWrong. People often attack frontier AI labs for "hypocrisy" when the labs admit publicly that AI is an extinction threat to humanity. Often these attacks ignore the difference between various kinds of hypocrisy, some of which are good, including what I'll call "reformative hypocrisy". Attacking good kinds of hypocrisy can be actively harmful for humanity's ability to survive, and as far as I can tell we (humans) usually shouldn't do that when our survival is on the line. Arguably, reformative hypocrisy shouldn't even be called hypocrisy, due to the negative connotations of "hypocrisy". That said, bad forms of hypocrisy can be disguised as the reformative kind for long periods, so it's important to pay enough attention to hypocrisy to actually figure out what kind it is. Here's what I mean, by way of examples: *** 0. No Hypocrisy Lab: "Building AGI without regulation shouldn't be allowed. Since there's no AGI regulation, I'm not going to build AGI." Meanwhile, the lab doesn't build AGI. This is a case of honest behavior, and what many would consider very high integrity. However, it's not obviously better, and arguably sometimes worse, than... 1. Reformative Hypocrisy: Lab: "Absent adequate regulation for it, building AGI shouldn't be allowed at all, and right now there is no adequate regulation for it. Anyway, I'm building AGI, and calling for regulation, and making lots of money as I go, which helps me prove the point that AGI is powerful and needs to be regulated." Meanwhile, the lab builds AGI and calls for regulation. So, this is a case of honest hypocrisy. I think this is straightforwardly better than... 2. Erosive Hypocrisy: Lab: "Building AGI without regulation shouldn't be allowed, but it is, so I'm going to build it anyway and see how that goes; the regulatory approach to safety is hopeless." Meanwhile, the lab builds AGI and doesn't otherwise put efforts into supporting regulation. This could also be a case of honest hypocrisy, but it erodes the norm that AGI should regulated rather than supporting it. Some even worse forms of hypocrisy include... 3. Dishonest Hypocrisy, which comes in at least two importantly distinct flavors: a) feigning abstinence: Lab: "AGI shouldn't be allowed." Meanwhile, the lab secretly builds AGI, contrary to what one might otherwise guess according to their stance that building AGI is maybe a bad thing, from a should-it-be-allowed perspective. b) feigning opposition: Lab: "AGI should be regulated." Meanwhile, the lab overtly builds AGI, while covertly trying to confuse and subvert regulatory efforts wherever possible. *** It's important to remain aware that reformative hypocrisy can be on net a better thing to do for the world than avoiding hypocrisy completely. It allows you to divert resources from the thing you think should be stopped, and to use those resources to help stop the thing. For mathy people, I'd say this is a way of diagonalizing against a potentially harmful thing, by turning the thing against itself, or against the harmful aspects of itself. For life sciencey people, I'd say this is how homeostasis is preserved, through negative feedback loops whereby bad stuff feeds mechanisms that reduce the bad stuff. Of course, a strategy of feigning opposition (3a) can disguise itself as reformative hypocrisy, so it can be hard to distinguish the two. For example, if a lab says for long time that they're going to admit their hypocritical stance, and then never actually does, then it turns out to be dishonest hypocrisy. On the other hand, if the dishonesty ever does finally end in a way that honestly calls for reform, it's good to reward the honest and reformative aspects of their behavior....
