Hello again Racing Ears,Ever since I first laid my eyes on the amazing Porsche 962 back in 1985 when I was 13 years old at Laguna Seca Raceway, I have always been a fan of the spectacular era that was the IMSA Camel GTP racing series in North America in the mid to late 1980's. Rick Knoop co-drove the BF Goodrich Jim Busby Racing number 67 Porsche 962 with Jim Busby at the 1985 Monterey Triple Crown held at Laguna Seca Raceway. I attended on Saturday of the weekend in May 1985 with my Dad and I remember having an amazing time watching the IMSA GTP pracitce and qualifying sessions. Laguna Seca was still in its original configuration and after chatting with Rick Knoop in this episode you really get to hear a highly detailed and descriptive account of what those first 4 corners were really like at Laguna Seca back in that era. We touched on a few memories that include the winter testing at Riverside Raceway , 1985 Sunbank 24 at Daytona, 1985 Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring, 1985 Los Angeles Times / Nissan Grand Prix at Riverside, the 1985 Nissan Monterey Triple Crown at Laguna Seca, and the 1987 Ford California Grand Prix at Sears Point, with a light sprinkle of Can Am, NASCAR, and Historic Formula 1 Racing. Many thanks to Rick Knoop for another amazing interview! Presented by FLY RacingWith some time left until Supercross starts back up, Anton made the drive to Iowa to watch the Justin Brayton Shootout at Riverside Raceway. Since Iowa has lifted restrictions from COVID-19 in recent weeks, the weekend in Winterset quickly became a must-ahead for riders of all skill levels in the central part of the United States and by the end of the weekend there were 1834 total race entries in a wide variety of classes. A sizeable purse payout to the Pro Classes lured a handful of speedy riders from around the region, including big winner Marshal Weltin, and it gave Anton a fix of competitive racing and motorcycles. But part of the trip was to meet up with close friend Jeff Crutcher. A fixture in the Midwest MX scene, Crutcher has carved a unique space for himself through his start-up graphics shop (Rippin Ruts), coffee brand (Gimmick), and assorted ambassador deals with brands in the industry. Jeff has seen it all during his 23-years as a card carrying member to the AMA and over the last few years, he's honed in on the fun that comes with being a fast local rider. One of the biggest things that Anton and Crutcher have noticed in recent years is the return of of familiar faces to the track, as their 30-something year old friends have decided to get back on bikes or started the cycle over again with their kids on minis. Grassroots racing isn't going anywhere and the guys discussed what they're seeing at tracks around the country.

Tom McEwen, won the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) U.S. Nationals during part of his 45-year career. He is listed as number 16 of the 50 most significant drivers of NHRA’s first 50 years. He received the nickname "the Mongoose" in 1964 from engine builder Ed Donovan. It was largely originally used as a device to entice Don "the Snake" Prudhomme into a high-exposure match race. In 1965, he faced Hot Wheels teammate Don Prudhomme at the Hot Rod Magazine Championship Drag Races, held at Riverside Raceway, "one of the most significant drag racing events" of that era. McEwen won five NHRA national events, but his gift for gab and promotional ability made him one of the sport's most influential and controversial figures. As stated by Roland Leong,“McEwen was the smartest of the bunch. When he came up with the Hot Wheels deal using the Snake and Mongoose characters, it shook the world of drag racing big time. He produced a sponsorship package that allowed him and Prudhomme to buy the best equipment, pay expenses, make money and sell their image all over the United States. I hate to admit it but McEwen and Prudhomme showed us the way to the future. They were a lot smarter than most of us who didn't see past the end of the quarter-mile
