June 11, 1994. It's the opening night of The Petersen Automotive Museum, and Hollywood is out in full force. But it's not the celebrities we usually think of - it's the cars they drive. None of this would have been possible without the charity and automotive passion of the museum's namesake: Robert E. Petersen. How did he turn his passion for hot rodding into the modern car show? How did he, without a formal education, turn an 8-page, 25 cent magazine into one of the world's premier publishing companies? And how would he come to create an automotive mecca in the heart of LA? Ending Season 2 of CarStories, Daniel Valdez and Patrick Thomas sat down with contemporary artist Daniel Arsham to talk cars, Cleveland Cavaliers, Formula 1 and his current exhibition "Arsham Auto Motive" at the Petersen Automotive Museum. Daniel Arsham is known for his “eroded” works that occupy a space where the concepts of yesterday, today, and tomorrow collide, representing a fictional archaeology wherein objects from our cultural and material present are unearthed at some point in the distant future. These casts of modern artifacts are created from geological materials such as sand, quartz, and selenite, appearing fossilized as if they have just been discovered after being buried for ages. Through the sculptures displayed in Arsham Auto Motive, the artist historicizes the automobile—a paragon of the modern era—and its related symbols, presenting the viewer with a glimpse of future history.
With Jeff Smith, Steve Strope, and Cam Benty Presented by ARP Terry Karges, the Executive Director of the famed Petersen Automotive Museum invites the Car Guys to tour the museum and share its history, his own past with Roush Performance and his favorites of each car collection on display. Jeff and Cam are both alumni of the Hot Rod Petersen publishing empire that's legacy is preserved at the museum. Along with famed car collector Bruce Meyer, and many others, Terry oversaw the transformation of the car history museum into a modern automotive art gallery. Their goal is to bring together automotive enthusiasts of all types, from lowriders to classic cars and Hollywood movie car fanatics. And not only preserve history but look towards the future of cars and transportation. This is seen clearly in their massive Tesla exhibit and past Hypercar exhibits alongside classic race cars of the past. In last week's podcast, we learned how Lyn St. James started with humble beginnings and progressed to the highest levels of professional auto racing. This week St. James will tell us about the Women in Motorsports North America program. From the interesting origin of WIMNA, to where they're going in the future. The bottom line is that this organization is designed to advance opportunities for women throughout the motorsports industry. Their big event of the year is the Women with Drive Summit III coming up on November 7-8, 2023 in Avondale, Arizona. For more information on the summit, go to: www.womenwithdrivesummit.com. For more information on the organization, go to: www.womeninmotorsportsna.com. Women have played a key role in motorsports for many years in a multitude of roles. St. James (as usual) is at the forefront of helping drive the return on investment for those she works with. Enjoy! NOTE: Lyn St. James will be part of a panel discussion at the Petersen Automotive Museum on May 24th, 2023 – “A Tribute to Paula Murphy.” There will be a screening of the Paula Murphy: Undaunted documentary, followed by the panel discussion and a silent auction.
