Finally, Joe Rizzo is spending time with me. The Building Downtown host Jason Kelly (@JayKellyMMA) and Rizzo (@rearnakedchoke) talked about starting an MMA website in a different time. Things like UStream, WordPress, and physical social networking were the method to success in the Silver Star sponsorship days of MMA. It is a new age, when anyone can create a platform and spew out drivel without any regard for quality. Rizzo's foray into the sport of MMA is one that should not only be appreciated, but also used as an educational tool to learned from. Kelly and Rizzo were introduced to each other over a phone call in December 2010, which was set up by Conner Cordova. It was an opportunity Kelly took seriously as he prepared to advance in combat sports media and be aligned with the likes of Rizzo, Hector Castro, Rob Tatum, Bryan Henderson, and the rest of the staff at MMA DieHards. Rizzo and Castro created the website for MMA DieHards when there was no option like Wix. You needed a web designer, or at least someone who knows their way around web page development. Rizzo explained how you started an MMA website when the sport was still considered underground, the availability of sponsors to help foot the bill, how you drive viewers to your site, build content and recruit talent. Kelly joined the team and learned from Rizzo, but was set up with an abundance of opportunities from Castro. Between the two owners, Kelly cemented his spot in the print world of MMA. As time went on, Rizzo had to leave the site, which put Kelly in the Feature Content Manager position. While continuing to interview and write, Kelly got into the podcast side of media coverage. Kelly brought Rizzo back to guest co-host MMA Dieards Radio, but that quickly led to Rizzo reviving Rear Naked Choke Radio. Rizzo talked about returning to combat sports media after a quick hiatus and how things changed, yet remained the same. It's all about the fundamentals. Jason Kelly (@JayKellyMMA) and Joe Rizzo (@rearnakedchoke) hooked up RNC Radio with The Building Downtown to chat UFC 248, BTC 9: Rampage, Tyson Fury vs. Deontay Wilder, and a strangely true comparison. UFC 248 is headlined by middleweight champion Israel Adesanya vs. Yoel Romero, with a co-main event between strawweight champion Zhang Weili vs. former division queen Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Kelly and Rizzo talked about the four fighters at the top of the card, who they think will win, as well as some of the other key matchups, such as Sean O'Malley vs. José Alberto Quiñónez. Rizzo also laid out a fair comparison between Romero and David Ayres, a 42-year-old emergency goalie who recently played in -- and won -- an NHL game for the Carolina Hurricanes. Kelly and TBD co-host Kirill Kasatskiy attended BTC 9: Rampage at The Aud on Feb. 29, in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. Kelly and Rizzo touched on the event's main-event winner, Jesse Ronson, and the importance of supporting local MMA. Rizzo even added a rare rant, in which he panned the so-called experts who all seemed to have predicted the outcome correctly after the fact rather than before the fight, in which Fury went off as a slight underdog.
