From “Mirotic” to “Dreams Come True,” from “Hot Summer” to “Next Level,” SM Entertainment has built a reputation for reworking songs from outside Korea and turning them into K-pop staples. But where's the line between a cover, a sample, a demo… and plagiarism? In this episode, Chris and Chantel break down the legal and creative differences between covers, master vs. publishing rights, sampling, interpolation, and demo recordings - and why those distinctions matter more than most fans realize. We dive into SM's history of licensed remakes, Western songwriting collaborations, and the company's unique ability to transform existing material into something distinctly “SM.” Are these just copied songs… or carefully negotiated reinventions?References:Dolly Parton - "I Will Always Love You" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0bEZH6ZqG4Whitney Houston - "I Will Always Love You" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JWTaaS7LdUBig Mama Thornton - "Hound Dog" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoHDrzw-RPgElvis Presley - "Hound Dog" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNYWl13IWhYBTS - "As I Told You" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inNYQUC6dFsBLACKPINK - "So Hot" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skIfzl96Gc0TWICE - "End of Time" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxQKaEGrQ384Minute - "Milkshake" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrGQBMkXa30MEOVV - “Abracadabra” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jlLUl8hKGY&pp=ygURbWVvdnYgYWJyYWNhZGFicmE%3D Dara - “Mr. Rover” MV https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcWlLGDvmEE&pp=ygUOZGFyYSBtci4gcm92ZXI%3D KAI - “Rover” MV https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlTIextYnyQ&pp=ygUOZGFyYSBtci4gcm92ZXI%3D Medium.com "The Art of Clearing a Sample" article https://medium.com/the-courtroom/the-art-of-clearing-a-sample-deciding-if-its-worth-it-and-how-to-actually-do-e26fa56ad090Busta Rhymes - "Pass The Courvoisier Part II" feat. Synopsis: Every first Friday of the month, The Straits Times catches up with its foreign correspondents about life and trends in the countries they're based in. Extreme Spring Heat Signals Catastrophically Hot Summer and Multi-Wave Bushfire Risk for AustraliaGuest: Jeremy Zakis Australian springtime is experiencing unseasonably hot temperatures, approximately 16°C above average. Western Australia recorded 110°F, while Sydney reached 80-90°F. This sustained heat is seen as an ominous sign of a catastrophically hot summer involving droughts and bushfires. However, temperatures are expected to plummet by up to 20°C later in the week. This rapid cycling between hot/dry and cool/wet weather poses a major risk, as rain promotes rapid undergrowth that could fuel second, third, or fourth waves of bushfires. Discussions of La Niña have vanished, focusing instead on Antarctic upper-level wind layers, which are about 30°C warmer. Long-term forecasting is currently "almost impossible." 1864 BUSHFIRE

UK correspondent Matt Dathan look at Nigel Farage's Reform party's plans for mass deportations - 600,000 illegal migrants over five years if Reform wins the next general election, which polls suggest could happen. Energy prices are back up again in the UK - wind farms are being blamed. And less than a week of summer left - and it's been the hottest one on record.
The Korey Stringer Institute, at the University of Connecticut, is named after an N.F.L. player who died of exertional heatstroke. The lab's main research subjects have been athletes, members of the military, and laborers. But, with the extreme heat wrought by climate change, even mild exertion will put more and more of us in harm's way; in many parts of the United States, a combined heat wave and power outage could cause staggering fatalities. Dhruv Khullar, a New Yorker contributor, practicing physician, and professor of health policy, visited the Stringer Institute to undergo a heat test—walking uphill, for ninety minutes, in a hundred-and-four-degree heat—to better understand what's happening. “I just feel extremely puffy everywhere,” Khullar sighed. “You'd have to cut my finger off just to get my wedding ring off.” By the end of the test, he spoke of experiencing cramps, dizziness, and a headache. Khullar discussed the dangers of heatstroke with Douglas Casa, the lab's head, who nearly died of the condition as a young athlete. “Climate change has taken this into the everyday world for the everyday American citizen. You don't have to be a laborer working for twelve hours; you don't have to be a soldier in training,” Casa tells him. “This is making it affect so many people, even just during daily living.” Although the treatment for heat-related illness is straightforward, Casa says that implementation of simple preventive measures remains challenging—and that there is much we need to do to better prepare for the global rise in temperatures. This segment originally aired on August 25, 2023.
In today's culture, the phrase “toxic masculinity” is often used to attack men and masculinity itself. But the Bible gives a different vision. In this message from 1 Corinthians 16:13–14, Pastor Eric Kuykendall shares five commands from the Apostle Paul that show what healthy masculinity looks like:Stay alertStand firm in the faithLive courageouslyBe made strongDo everything in loveThis message closes out our Hot Topics series with a reminder that true strength is found in Christ and expressed through sacrificial love.
This week we all watched the Chris Columbis-directed THE THURSDAY MURDER CLUB (working title: Olds Detect), a comedy-drama about four friends (Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, and Celia Imrie), residents of an assisted living facility, who solve cold cases. That is, until a very real and current case lands in their laps when the facility's co-owners end up dead just as they plan to tear up the facility and force the residents out. We had mixed reactions to this one, but at least two Spoilerpiecers liked it more than the third (guess how that shakes out?). Then there's LURKER, writer-director Alex Russell's fresh take on celebrity culture and the depths to we which we mere mortals will sink to find it and stay in it. There's a powerful performance by Théodore Pellerin as an amoral creep clinging to an up and coming pop star played by Archie Madekwe. We had different reactions to this one, too, coming out, again, two to one in favor. And over on Patreon, we watched the 1958 melodrama THE LONG, HOT SUMMER, starring Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, and Orson Welles.

Online sports betting has exploded across America—$147 billion in wagers were placed in 2024 alone. While the Bible doesn't explicitly forbid gambling, it does warn us that not everything “lawful” is actually helpful (1 Corinthians 6:12).In this message, Pastor Eric Kuykendall unpacks the dangers of online sports gambling and how Christians can faithfully respond. From addiction and debt to family harm and poor stewardship, the risks are real. But the good news? God's Word points us to freedom. By saying no to what dominates us, we can say yes to accountability, discipleship, better stewardship, and the mercy that comes through confession.

What does a Christian first approach to immigration look like?In this message from our Hot Summer Topics series, Pastor Eric Kuykendall shares how God's Word shapes our response to one of today's most debated issues. Through Scripture, real-life stories—including one from a TBC member who immigrated from Vietnam—and biblical principles, we'll see how remembering our own story in Christ changes how we view and treat others. We'll explore:Why remembering our spiritual story matters in the immigration conversationThe biblical call to uphold the law while loving the strangerHow immigrants can be both a gift to the Church and an opportunity for the GospelWhether you agree or disagree on immigration policy, this sermon invites you to see the issue through the lens of Scripture and the heart of God.Follow Us OnlineInstagram - / trinity_bibleFacebook - / trinitybiblewillowparkTikTok - / trinitybiblechurchWebsite - https://trinitybible.com/

Like it or not, Trump and his surreal version of a libertarian patrimonial America is reshaping the world. At least in what the FT's Janan Ganesh dubs “the high summer of Donald Trump”. But my old friend Jason Pack, host of the excellent Disorder podcast, doesn't believe that a strategy of short-term chaos is a viable long-term global strategy for America. Pack argues that while Trump may be achieving tactical wins through short-term disruptions—from ending the Iran-Israel conflict to forcing favorable trade negotiations—this approach fundamentally undermines the strategic international coordination needed to address existential challenges like AI regulation, climate change, and systemic economic and military competition with China. Without coherent global governance structures, Pack predicts, we're sleepwalking into a long-term disordered world where private tech giants wield more power than governments themselves. Trump's high summer of disorder, he warns, could degenerate into an apocalyptic winter of our collective discontent.1. Trump's Chaos Is Actually Strategic Success Despite appearing haphazard, Trump has achieved major goals through disorder - ending the Iran-Israel conflict with bunker buster bombs, securing favorable trade deals through tariff threats, and making himself the global "swing player" that everyone must negotiate with.2. America's Disproportionate Global Leverage The US economy, though only 1.8 times larger than Europe's, wields 5-6 times the global influence. Trump has discovered how to weaponize this asymmetry more ruthlessly than previous presidents, while Europe remains largely irrelevant in AI and tech.3. Private Tech Giants Now Rival Government Power Multi-trillion dollar companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Nvidia are becoming more powerful than governments themselves. The old DARPA model of government-led innovation has given way to private sector dominance, fundamentally reshaping the relationship between state and market.4. The Missing "NATO for AI" Pack argues we desperately need international coordination structures to govern AI development, data storage, and energy infrastructure. Without treaty-based cooperation among democracies, we're ceding control to either authoritarian regimes or unaccountable private companies.5. A Crisis May Be Necessary to Restore Government Both analysts suggest that only a major catastrophe - economic crash, environmental disaster, or military conflict - will force people to recognize government's essential role. Until then, we're trapped in "libertarian patrimonialism" where personal networks trump institutional governance.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. He also shares a hopeful reminder: Jesus isn't just a good example—He's the Good Shepherd, and He knows you by name.
